The information is great, but the organization is lacking.. At least for my uses.

I bought this book becuase I wanted to learn the edible plants of texas,both as a reference to browse, and as a book to look up plants I've located in it....

It is organized for netiher. If you already know a plant by scientific name, or common name then you can easily look up the plant in the index, but if not it's something of a task.

The plants are alphabetical, no big suprise there... but the sketches are few, and the color plates are all in a center section of 16 pages and 4 plants each... I sincerley doubt (although I have not counted) that all the plants are represented. The color plates dont' have page references so to find the detail information, you need to go back to the index again.

So as i said, if you already know the plants by name, it's fine to look them up in. But if you want to browse through to find aplant you see, or
look it up by characteristics... it's not terribly useful. If you want to browse through to familiarise yourself with the flora... again.. not useful.

Again in summary, Information good, organization, poor for my uses.

I was very disapointed in the usefulness of the book itself.

Excellent resource.......2006-07-26

I bought this book because I am interested in dyeing yarn with plants. I have found it an invaluable introduction to plants for dyeing but it is also a good basic guide to various uses of Texas plants. I am new to Texas and this book has enabled me to investigate and learn about the natural plant life of the Southwest. The information on dyeing and edible plants is in depth enough to allow for experimentation. It has recipes for preparing wild plants that I would never have imagined eating --like the prickly pear cactus pad.

The dyeing section introduced me to solar dyeing, a technique I had not heard of before. I have experimented a little with the technique and it works really well, especially for dyeing with tree clippings because the solar fermentation breaks down the bark.

A non-native who knows nothing about Texas plant life needs a basic fieldguide with pictures in order to identify the plants to be used but Tull's book provides much, much more.

A truly useful book.

I found this book in my local library, and knew I couldn't live without it. As a beginning spinner and yarn dyer, I found the information that the authoress provides invaluable. I especially enjoyed the step-by-step dyeing instructions, and the categories of the table of contents: toxicity is so NICE to know right away!

Definitive on edible and useful Texas plants.......2001-09-22

I have been interested in edible plants in Texas since attendng a class this March given by a member of Texas Agricutural Extension Service where we foraged for our lunch after class, in the woods. This book is so extensive, includng recipes (I'm a cook), I found a lot of nutritious. medicinal plants in my backyard's weeds this spring. I was prompted to want to forage more.I would recommend it to everyone who wants more information than just the books for use by campers. I also have Edible Wild Plants by Peterson, which I also like, that has photographs and drawings but is not as extensive as Ms. Tull's book. Texas loss is Alaska's gain!

Best ever.......2005-10-17

Went to England with this guide book in hand, the insides marked out with places my husband and I wanted to visit --- sights, restaurants, shopping. Reviews were very detailed. With practically everything so expensive in Europe, this was a real godsend -- it led us to the best deals wherever in England we chose to go. Our hosts had just as much fun as we did, "discovering" new places, and telling themselves they'll definitely come back again. When we left, they asked us to leave the book with them. Need I say more?

Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.

Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.

Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.

Essential reading for students and seniors who travel.......2005-03-23

If you're visiting the U.K. and Ireland, especially on a shoestring budget, "Let's Go - Britain & Ireland 2005" is a great choice. It focuses on budget travel, plus cheap & free destinations. It's a superb resource for hostel reviews, and tells you exactly where the best pubs, clubs, and night spots are. If you're a student who enjoys travel, the "Let's Go" series is practically required reading.

Because this book covers so much territory (literally), don't expect as many details or as much advice as more specialized guides. If all you need is an overview and important travel tips, this is the one to buy.

Frankly, if your schedule is flexible and you have a little extra cash for touring, you can go to the U.K. and Ireland with just this book. Pick up tourist brochures for each area when you get there, and plan your day-by-day activities as you travel. Like many "Let's Go" guides, their Britain & Ireland 2005 guidebook makes travel fun and easy.

This book is an excellent reference for informal travel. It includes good maps, common sense advice, and the kinds of practical information in each chapter that can spare you hours of getting lost while looking for the bus stop or a place for a good, affordable lunch.

Oh, if you're traveling with small children or want a guidebook that reviews the better hotels and B&Bs, "Ireland for Dummies" is probably a better choice. But, if you favor hostels and want to eat where the locals do, this Let's Go guide is worth throwing into your backpack or suitcase as you head to the U.K. and Ireland.

I recommend "Let's Go - Britain and Ireland 2005" most for students and adventurous seniors, and this book will be in my own suitcase when I'm visiting the U.K. and Ireland.

the new 2005 edition.......2005-01-17

Just in response to one of the other reviews, I'd like to point out that they may refer to the 2004 edition of B&I. I am currently studying in Britain with the sexy new 2005 edition and I'm happy to report that, yes, the prices have been updated and, in the case of trains and buses, they tend to list the highest possible price so you may even find things cheaper than the guide says. There are guides with more extensive coverage, but none cover Britain with nearly as much style: if anything, this is certainly the coolest of the Britain travel guides.

Helpful guide for your trip.......2004-09-16

I used this book to plan a trip originating in London, then traveling to Dublin amd finally to Galway. This book was very helpful in the planning stage of the trip. It definitely made the trip a lot smoother and less expensive. It includes maps, advice, and other information to give you ideas on accomodation, dining and sights to see. I recommend it.

Contemporary scholars of law and the social sciences have awoken to an understanding of the law of unintended consequences. This law states, roughly, that the most important consequences of any law, regulation, or policy, will be those that none of its advocates desired.

Examples are too numerous for recitation here. But one of the most poignant fields for the operation of this law is the whole issue of race relations in America, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and its progeny.

Halpern shows, with exacting scholarship, just how the effects of these acts differ from the intention, and how people in the US of all races have to rethink their most firmly held convictions, to square them with the observed (however unintended) consequences of the actions recent generations have taken, acting on just such convictions.

Eskew describes the changing face of Birmingham's civil rights campaign, from the politics of accommodation practiced by the city's black bourgeoisie in the 1950s to local pastor Fred L. Shuttlesworth's groundbreaking use of nonviolent direct action to challenge segregation during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

In 1963, the national movement, in the person of Martin Luther King Jr., turned to Birmingham. The national uproar that followed on Police Commissioner Bull Connor's use of dogs and fire hoses against the demonstrators provided the impetus behind passage of the watershed Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Paradoxically, though, the larger victory won in the streets of Birmingham did little for many of the city's black citizens, argues Eskew. The cancellation of protest marches before any clear-cut gains had been made left Shuttlesworth feeling betrayed even as King claimed a personal victory. While African Americans were admitted to the leadership of the city, the way power was exercised—and for whom—remained fundamentally unchanged.

Glenn Eskew has detailed the history of the civil rights movement in Birmingham from 1945 to almost the current time. His account is a detailed view of the struggle within the African-American community to find a way to confront segregation that was regnant in Birmingham. He has told a story riveting in its details and close observations. I lived through the period covered as a white liberal in a city undergoing enormous change. I knew many of the players who stride across these pages--Fred Shutttlesworth, Eugene T. "Bull" Connor, Abraham Woods, C. Herbert Oliver,Police Chief E.H. Brown Lucius Pitts, James A. Head, David Vann, Erskine Smith,James Bevels, Tommy Wrenn, Meatball Dothard, John and Addine Drew,Tom King,James Mills,and James A. Simpson. Culiminating in the 1963 marches lead by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Martin Luther King, Jr., Eskew shows the interaction of the local civil rights movement impacted by a national movement. Before King ever came to Birmingham the struggle for civil rights was carried on by local people who deserve to be valorized. Eskew does not do this. His careful and balanced interpretations make this history at its best. If you want to know how a city becomes captive to an ideology (segregation of the races) in a way that permeates all of social, political, educational and cultural life it is revealed here. You will see how dissenters are rejected and punished. You will see how newspapers, churches, pastors, businessmen--indeed every segment of society--is made to bow down to the God of Segregation. Eskew is all balance and historical objectivity. I fault his account in only one way, which is subject to argument and interpretation. He misses the fact that "vigilante activity," the blowing up of houses, the beating of rebels against segregation, and the general terror that held segregation in place was "governmentally sponsored." The Klansmen who bombed, whipped, cut, tortured and attacked were protected by the police and approved in the community generally. This is a fine study and a wonderful corrective for a generation who think that Martin Luther King was the civil rights movement. It was an indigeous protest movement and different in every community in the South. Eskew tells Birmingham's bloody story, in a fine prose and sense of drama, that brings that old struggle to life.--W. Edward Harris

"Dopotolomeo," far from being an astronomical dissertation, instead refers to the "aftermath" of a lamp, and more precisely to what has happened in the professional life of Michele De Lucchi from the birth of the famous Tolomeo lamp, conceived in 1986, until today.

"Dopotolomeo" is a diary that is as sincere and messy as the succession of events of life; it is a collage of images and thoughts, as chaotic as anything that comes to life in people's heads. The thread of this diary is drawn from the notebooks that De Lucchi has kept ever since his time at university: from the first one on squared paper for his accounts, to the larger ones with paper for water-colours, to the "small notebooks" ("quadernini"), packed with words, which now represent Michele De Lucchi's professional history.

The flow of the images of "Dopotolomeo" is reminiscent of a karstic river, in which the messages sometimes appear very clear, immediate-- the analogies to the anthropomorphous forms of many of his projects-- and others are more subtended, hidden, underground. Yet the river keeps on flowing and a little further on it resurfaces, carrying along its history, a continuous flow, even if made of discontinuity, because "it is an essential part of making projects to produce and sustain reasons of discontinuity."
