Book Description

For decades, Tom Brown, Jr.-the renowned wilderness expert and tracker trained by an Apache elder-has been called upon to find lost children, escaping criminals, wild animals-anything that can walk, crawl, or lope through the wilderness. Now, he talks about sixteen of his most incredible adventures for the first time-including the desperate race to reach a diabetic child before he goes into insulin shock, the treacherous struggle to capture an armed criminal which left Tom with a bullet in his back, and his pursuit of a tiger loose in the wilds of New Jersey.

From the remote Pine Barrens of New Jersey to the wilds of Wyoming, Tom Brown has earned the mantle of America's Greatest Tracker-someone who, with the help of an Apache elder, has developed his senses to such a degree that he can "read" the environment around him in ways that seem almost magical.

Now, for the first time, he shares vivid accounts of his most fascinating cases as an outdoors detective, including:

€ The search for a diabetic child before he goes into insulin shock
€ The struggle to apprehend an armed criminal who put a bullet in his back
€ The hunt for a tiger loose in the New Jersey wilderness
€ The incredible search for a missing teenager where the police had turned up no clues
€ His astonishing determination that the cause of a police officer's death was not a suicide, but in fact, a murder!
€ and more

3 out of 5 stars Great man - not as good of a writer..........2007-03-25

As with most Tom Brown books, of which I own all of them, I wish he allowed himself a good editor. For those who have never stumbled across Brown's books before, I think that he can come across as fantastic, made up, or even flat fiction. Essentially, when he is billed as the greatest tracker in North America - no one seems to dispute him on these facts. When you do research on the Survival schools in America - most instructors were taught by him. When you talk to people who have taken his school, I have not, they say that he is the real deal.

With this said, he is a far better tracker than a writer and thus his books often come across as flat. The best story in this book is the story about his search for Jerry A., a little lost 3 year old boy in the Grand Canyon. It breaks your heart and shows you that Tom Brown stories do not all end happily. By the time the Tracker is called in and can get there, every other method has been exhausted. The story makes you weep for the little boy and the sadness that a tracker must see. The passion and sadness in this tale is the book at it's best. If they were all like this I would say 4 of 5 stars would be applicable.

However, the poorer stories, such as the tale about Nails, a man that he had trained previously seems devoid of good description and fact and almost impossible to 'see'. The story would be awesome if just told by a better writer.

When the book 'The Tracker' was written, a better than Brown wrote it and the stories came to life. Unfortunatley, for whatever reason, Brown writes his later books himself, and something is lost. I do not think Brown needs to give up all writing, he just needs a good editor.

The best review I can give is to share an open letter to the author, Tom Brown Jr.

Tom Brown,

Thank you for not only sharing these candid and true stories from your life, thank you for sharing them in a way that teaches us how to enter more deeply into the life of the apache scout and the life of the tracker.

Your stories continue to inpsire me to deepen my skills, and to immerse myself into the world of what else is possible.

Your book, Case Files of The Tracker is a great read, that is great for beginner and seasoned tracker alike.

Thank you Tom,

John Wingert

1 out of 5 stars Is Brown Insane or Merely a Liar?.......2005-05-02

If you're going to gloss yourself as "America's Greatest Outdoorsman," you should offer more to your readers than juvenile, New Age adventure stories. This book holds more snickers than the M&M Mars wharehouse.

Do people really take this guy seriously? His prose is leaden at best and his chest-thumbing goes well beyond the realm of satire. Tom Brown's writings are to serious tracking what Spider Man comics are to martial arts. "My spirit sense told me he had been here....Only a person I had trained would be able to do that."

If you're looking for an honest read about tracking, there are scores of better authors out there. If you're looking for risible mumbo jumbo, laughable braggadocio, and a tenth-rate cloak and dagger yarn, then Tom's your guy!

(Seriously, people literally and figuratively buy this excrement?)

1 out of 5 stars Can't he use any more descriptive words?.......2005-04-14

I bought this book yesterday from Barnes and Nobels bookstore. I liked the title and thought, "This might be a good read." I read half of it yesterday. The book was so monotonous. He keeps using the word "Cenntrical ring" and "track" too much. I couldn't get past a page without reading the word track. It became so repetitive that it was chore to continue reading this book. I hated it.

4 out of 5 stars Not as bad as the other reviews say..........2004-12-24

First full disclosure...this was the first book I've read by Tom Brown, after the title caught my eye in the bookstore. Also, after initially starting it, I did the standard Internet search to find out who he was and what he was about.
The book is a quick easy read and the subject is fascinating. I give it only 4 instead of 5 stars, because the writing is somewhat stilted. I don't fault him some of the redundancy, because I think he is intentionally trying to hammer some key points in his philosophy.

I think Tom Brown is approaching twilight time in his life, and no doubt he recognizes that. I think he is trying to make peace with some events in his past life. Not to ruin the book, but every story does not end with him carrying out a lost child on his shoulders to the adulation of the town or with him leading out an escaped fugitive in chains.

This book does not smack of "smug arrogance and bravado" that some of the other reviewers would lead you to believe...just the opposite, Tom Brown gives full disclosure concerning some of his mistakes and regrets from the various cases described in the book, he always gives full credit to his tracker students, and he approaches everything in the book: the wilderness, the unfortunate circumstances of other people, with respect and reverence.

I also find it ridiculous that some of the other reviewers criticized the fact that this book "wouldn't teach them how to track." Read the other books he's written, or attend his tracking school up north. If he took time in the book to describe "how he does it" it would probably take several pages and destroy the continuity of the story.
I can't see how anyone with a pulse would not enjoy this book. Enjoyable read. I see myself reading more of his books.

Book Description

The Complete Tracker is a concise, thorough guide to the tracks, signs, and habits of North America's most popular species of wildlife. Readers learn the secrets of a master tracker, assembling a clear picture from tracks, scat, and other signs. Was it a dog or a wolf? Fox or coyote? Did it pass by yesterday or an hour ago? The Complete Tracker also teaches how to get close to animals - everything from bobcats to beavers, marmots to moose - by knowing the details of their habits and a master-tracker's tips on avoiding detection. Over eighty line drawings show tracks of forty-five different species of wildlife under a great variety of terrain conditions.

1 out of 5 stars contains inaccurate information.......2007-01-15

Overall, it is somewhat an interesting read but, it contains false, misleading information through out the book. One example is that the author states on page 75 "Feral swine lack tusks (although some with mixed blood have them)". Domesticated and Feral hogs are both born with canine teeth (tusks). Farmers remove the canine teeth within a few days of birth so swine will not injure each other, their owners, or damage property. The crude drawings of scat (animal droppings) aren't very useful aids in identifying animals, color photos would be much more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Shawn Wilson's review.......2007-01-08

I worked in Law Enforcement and in my particular law enforcement branch I use tracking everyday. I have personally met Mr. McDougall and have spent sometime with him in the woods during a private three-day tracking and survival class. Mr. McDougall is very knowledgable and lives to be near to nature. He owns several wolves and has overwelming knowledge in wildlife. I used to live in Michigan and it was a pleasure to meet and spend time learning from Mr. McDougall. I only wish that I still lived in the U.P. and could benefit from his knowledge, face-to-face, still further.

5 out of 5 stars Opened my eyes to the world around me........2005-01-16

After reading McDougall's book, walking in the outdoors is a whole new (and much richer) experience for me. And that includes the local city park as much as anywhere else.

The book does a very good job of showing habitats, tracks and scat of different animals, as well as pictures of each animal (although I wouldn't have minded a few more pictures than what he has). He also includes stories from what he has observed himself and stories from others as well. This makes the book very readable - the story about the badgers by the side of the road on page 166 is especially hilarious.

There is interesting information about different species on almost every page. There is also a great amount of information about observing and tracking wildlife, including tips like wearing hats and avoiding perfumed or color-brightening laundry soaps.

This is really a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to open their eyes and see more of the world around them. It has something for the casual observer and for the serious hunter.

5 out of 5 stars Informative & well written.......2004-08-15

This is the best tracking book I own. In fact, it's the best tracking resource I'm aware of (including web-based material). The author writes well, so the book is well organized and the information is presented clearly. The index is excellent -- much better than most books -- so it's easy to locate the info you need. The tracks are illustrated by drawings rather than photos, which I might have preferred, but the drawings are clear, and I suppose they illustrate key features better than most photos would. Best of all, this author really knows his stuff, and he writes about animals with passion and insight. As a result, this book is much more than a "track identification" manual. It provides serious -- but easy to read -- information about the animals whose tracks it covers. And the author has enriched the descriptions with interesting personal anecdotes about his own wildlife encounters. Finally, the author has included very helpful information about finding and observing animals in the wild. Highly recommended for people who enjoy wildlife observation.

5 out of 5 stars Even Native Americans reference this book........2003-02-22

If you go to the Natural Resources Commission office of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians in Petoskey, Michigan, you'll find The Complete Tracker on their reference bookshelf. If it's good enough for a tribal biologist to use as a reference, this book is certainly good enough for me.

      4 out of 5 stars finally a good kid's safari book..........2003-06-07

Have been hunting for a good safari book to orient my 4 & 8 yr old sons before we go on a safari to east Africa. This book was easy to look at for the 4yr old, and pretty easy to read for the 8yr old. (Although he needed help with some words). The illustrations are good & it has great basic information about some of the major animals, as well as sample tracks to look out for. My only negative comments are that two of the animals are not given their more popular names (even in parentheses) so it was hard to match this info up with other books. Also, some major animal types are left out, so that was disappointing. Those are minor gripes though, and on the whole the book is great.

I highly recommend that when you visit NYC you carry a copy of Flashmaps with you. It's a convenient subway and bus map, shows you all the neighborhoods, museums, post offices, etc. But the thing I use the most is the cross street lookup, which I relied on not just while new in NYC but also as a long-time resident.
I discovered the NYC Flashmaps many years ago when I asked a limo driver exactly where a business address was. He pulled out his Flashmaps, turned to the cross street page and told me the exact cross street in well... a flash. He told me no professional driver and no New Yorker should be without it. I bought my first copy that day and have been telling residents and vistors alike for years.

5 out of 5 stars A very handy guide for Native New Yorkers & regular visitors.......2003-07-01

I donýt know how the conversation started, but I was at the Union Square store of a major competitor of Amazon, letýs just call it FarmStructures & Nobel Booksellers, and the security guard told me that he had relied on this book as a native New Yorker for years. So I bought it.

And now *I* have relied on it for years.

Whether you are looking for where the ýDý train crosses the ý7ý or where exactly Cornelia Street is anyway, this book is excellent. Museums, movie theaters, road maps and highways are all here. The shopping and restaurants sections are good for out-of-towners looking for the classics, less useful for New Yorkers looking for the next new thing, obviously.

Itýs small, convenient, and well-drafted (the maps themselves are different colors so you can readily find what youýre looking for as you flip through ý yellow is street /subway; pink is daytime attractions; black/blue for nighttime attractions). All in all, anybody living in or visiting New York frequently would find this useful. If you are a one-time tourist, though, youýre probably better off going with something more comprehensive like Lonely Planet.

            Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Every New Yorker should have this handy guide.......2003-06-29

Certainly veteran New Yorkers will snicker that they don't need "Fodor's Flashmaps New York" to get around town. And they may very well be right. However, as a New Yorker with many international friends I field countless queries about what to do in New York City when you get here. Let's be honest...the Big Apple is gigantic. And no matter how well versed you are about New York City...things change so quickly in this town that it is smart to have this tidy little book around just in case you happen to suffer from brainlock.

And then of course sometimes friends ask for help for things for the kids or for their young teens. Moreover, some queries are specifically for daylight hours, nightlife, weekend activities or happenings in boroughs outside of Manhattan. This text can help. Additionally, Fodor's includes essential telephone numbers for hotels, places of worship, ballparks, schools and universities, airports, transportation, museums, art galleries, parks, shopping, dining, theaters, movies, libraries, consulates, hospitals and hip nightlife activities. Fodor's even provides zip codes but no e-mail addresses.

This book is a great tool. It's small and can easily slip into the inside of your sports coat or if you have a normal size purse, just pop it in and you're set. Or better yet...carry it around in your back pocket (it fits). There are 61 maps and thousands of listings. It will help you walk around, take buses, ride the subways or take railways into the suburbs. In my opinion it clearly is worth the investment for metropolitans or for anyone who wants to visit New York City. One thing is for sure...it will save you plenty of time, and as everyone knows...time is an important commodity.

5 out of 5 stars Most valuable tool.......2003-05-20

I bought this book a little over a year ago and have used it for several business trips. It is small and easy to carry, doesn't look touristy, and gives me a lot of confidence getting around Manhattan. The best $ I ever spent. You know how some people just seem to "know" New York even though they don't live there? Well, that's me now.

Booklist : Gr. 6-12. First published in 1988, this authoritative history has now been expanded to include newly available facts and crucial issues for discussion. The core of the book remains the same, with a writing style both passionate and controlled, combining eyewitness accounts, statistics, and commentary in a spacious format that includes documentary photos (many of them taken by the Nazis) on almost every page. Rogasky has added material about the roles of Nazi "helpers," including German police and bystanders. There's a new section on the Nazi persecution of gay men, and there's more about the rescuers. The chapter on whether the Holocaust is unique covers horrifying recent events, such as the genocide in Rwanda, and a new chapter gives details about contemporary hate groups and answers those who deny that the Holocaust happened. 5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2006-06-14

This book is a must have for anyone interested in the Holocaust. I teach a unit on this topic to eighth graders and we use this book as a text. The chapters are short, reader-friendly, and yet very complete. I have yet to find another non-fiction Holocaust book as comprehensive as this.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent choice .......2006-01-23

This book was wonderful. By the time I finished reading it, I was crying. The story of the holocaust is well expressed in the pages of this book. I felt that when I was reading it I was actually in a concentration camp witnessing the events. I never knew that all that happened to Jews. They were baked in ovens, put in gas chambers, shot on spot, or attacked by dogs. They had to endure long periods of time without health care or food. This book had pictures, maps and great writing. I think that this book is great but I don't reccomend it for children under 12 because of pictures, and describtions on treatment of Jews. Great job Baraba!

4 out of 5 stars Smoke and Ashes.......2005-05-18

If you are really into learning more about the holocaust then you need to read Smoke and Ashes by Barbara Rogasky. This book is an emotional book. It goes into detail on what the SS soilders did to the jewish people , and to the gypsies, homosexuals, the elderly ,and the mentaly ill. The Nazis would put them in gas chambers. They used zyclon B. They would burn them in ovens. If you really want to know more then I highly reccomend this book

            5 out of 5 stars a Review.......2004-05-24

Though im not jewish and am a christian i was interested in the holocaust so i bought this book through my school. While readin this book i cried at how much the jews and mentally ill and gypsies had to suffer just because they were jew mentally ill etc. Obviously this book isn't a happy one it tells of the holocaust and answers parctically all of your answers. This book is a good book and though like i said its a historic one that tells how cruel the world was this is a good book for people studying about the holocaust or part of what happened in europe during world war II.

3 out of 5 stars Good Holocaust book.......2000-05-12

I liked this book because it has good detals. It ezplains what people had to go through during the Holocaust.I recomed this book because it is a good way to learn about the Holocaust. The strong point was when the war was over. The weak point was when the naizs killed alot of people.
