Book Description
To some it's the classic "gateway drug," to others it is a harmless way to relax, or provide relief from pain. Some fear it is dangerous and addictive, while others feel it should be decriminalized. Whatever the viewpoint, cannabis incites debate at every level, and the effect it has on every corner of the globe is undeniable.
In this comprehensive study, Martin Booth crafts a tale of medical advance and religious enlightenment; of political subterfuge and law enforcement; of cunning smugglers, street pushers, gang warfare, writers, artists, and musicians. And above all, Booth chronicles the fascinating process through which cannabis became outlawed throughout the Western world, and the effect such legislation has had on the global economy.
Customer Reviews:
A very necessary book.......2006-05-12
By helping us see how we got to where we are today concerning cannabis, Martin Booth enables us to question the government propaganda about this plant, and the unconstitutional and oppressive methods employed to discourage its use, both as a medicine and a recreational drug. This is important, because the War on Drugs has done more to destroy our individual liberties than almost anything else our government does. If for no other reason, that makes this book a vital read for anyone who loves the liberties our founding fathers attempted to leave us.
Interesting Subject, Sketchy Scholarship.......2005-05-28
This isn't a bad book, and the subject matter is fascinating, but I found the book to be full of questionable research and great leaps in logic. For example, the author says that the expression "chill out" is from chillum, a primitive type of pipe that has been in use for thousands of years. "Chill Out" didn't enter the vernacular until the 1990's. There are many of these instances in the book.
smoking!!!!!.......2005-01-10
Pot? Ganja? Marijuana ? The difference...??? Read on...
The author covers the historical development of a very controversial plant delicately.... Cannabis is traced back to ancient times where its usage was (and still is in some parts of the world)more medicinal and related to religious rites as opposed to recreational... The books also delves into the components of the plant itself, optimal growing conditions, growing locations... the active ingredient that gives consumers the BANG!!!
come to the middle of the book we are enlighten with how the move against cannabis was first born.... and later explain the stand of governments on cannabis....
the book covers cannabis from a historical and cultural point of view!!! I enjoyed it!!! a superb history!!!!

Wonderful World of Hemp!.......2002-10-05
I believe that this book is a wonderful resource in learning the truth and facts about hemp. You wouldn't believe everything that this plant can do for you and the planet. If you find this to be wrong because of what you heard, try reading this and you will learn the truth, and will wonder why the government has been keeping this plant illegal even with all of its resourses that it has for us to use. I have learned a lot from this guy and I really would like to thank him for all his dedication and efforts to making it legal! Also try his video too! Very Useful!!!!
The View of Scholars.......2002-08-08
Historians strongly disagree with this book's claim to be an "authoritative historical" work: there is very little 'history' here. As a researcher myself, I would make the following brief comments on a mere handful of the book's distortions to serve as examples: 1) There was no accusation of cannabis possession or other drug usage in the trial of Joan of Arc: the transcript of that trial is one of those which I myself have translated from the original manuscripts, and no such charge is listed anywhere in either set of articles against her (not in the initial 70 articles nor in the final 12), nor was it ever mentioned in the course of the trial; the author simply made that up. There was never any suggestion that she used cannabis to produce her "voices": instead, her judges claimed (in Article XI of the final set) that the beings which she identified as angels and saints might be fallen angels instead.
2) The oft-cited claim that the presence of "unique" THC receptors is evidence of some sort of crucial link between human evolution and pot usage shows a profound misunderstanding of the way such receptors work: they do not typically bind only with a single "unique" substance, and in fact the receptors with which THC interacts (CB1, CB2, and an interaction with the opiate receptor which is still under study) were designed for chemicals in the body (anandamide and 2-arachidonoyl-glycerol); the opiate receptor was designed to react to endorphins and similar chemicals in the body. Just as certain drugs happen to bind with the opiate receptor due to a chance similarity in molecular structure, THC binds with CB1 because its structure happens to be just close enough to "fit". Arsenic and other poisons happen to interact with certain sites in the body for the same reason; presumably, we will now have to deal with the claim that the body was designed to consume arsenic, too.
3) Medieval books were expensive because they had to be painstakingly hand-written (and later, printed using a clumsy and laborious process), not because of any ban against paper, hemp-based or otherwise. This should hardly need to be said.
4) While the author is correct in saying that the ancient Scythians (for example) did use a cannabis-based substance, there seems to be a persistent attempt to add other ancient cultures to the list by deliberate distortion of the context (such as misinterpreting certain Hebrew words in order to claim that early Jews and Christians were using cannabis, too).
5) In another obvious gaffe, the book tries to claim that the Bible (of all things) supports pot usage by deliberately misinterpreting certain English translations (such as the one which uses an archaic definition of the word "herb" to translate Hebrew words such as "zara'on", which means "vegetable"), or by taking out of context Paul's comments about Jewish dietary laws (which banned certain meats, such as pork, which were common in the Greek-speaking world in which Paul was trying to win converts; hence the statement that any "creature" or "animal" ("ktisma" in the Greek version of the original manuscripts) is valid for consumption. Marijuana is not an "animal", although I've literally seen people try to argue that it somehow qualifies as such in order to support the author's views on this particular subject). A similar argument is invoked when dealing with a passage preaching against the outlawing of foods, with smoked marijuana suddenly being reclassified as a "food" in this case so the claim can be made that the Bible is hostile to current drug laws, all the while ignoring the passages which specifically forbid people to be under the influence of any such substance. The list can go on.
It's hard to know what to say in summary to a book like this: as many scholars have pointed out, it's little more than fiction and fluff, and certainly does not qualify as "history" in any sense of the term.
Smoke Herb.......2002-04-08
This guy speaks the truth. Before reading forget all prior knowledge to hemp and marijuana. You are in for an enlighting experience. So sit back, take a toke, and be prepared to learn. :)
The Emperor is Jack Herer!.......2001-11-20
Well, shall we say this is not really very authoritative? I picked up this book hoping to learn something. I have adult children who smoke M and I wanted to be able to agree or disagree based on objective research. I cannot draw any conclusions from this book. The book certainly gives no answers to any objective thinker. It is entirely biased. He gives very poor citing. A careful analysis of the book indicates Mr. Herer believes the entire world is involved in a conspiracy. The result is a propaganda like tar and feathering of all his enemies including religion. I was particularly offended by Mr. Hererýs interpretations of history. I found his history to be so suspect that it completely undermined any credibility he had.
Book Description
Learn the facts behind the pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of controversial cannabis therapeutics
The Handbook of Cannabis Therapeutics: From Bench to Bedside sets aside the condemnation and hysteria of society's view of cannabis to concentrate on the medically sound aspects of cannabis therapeutics. The world's foremost experts provide a reasoned, thoroughly researched overview of the controversial subject of cannabis, from its history as a medicine through its latest therapeutic uses. The latest studies on the botany, history, biochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, clinical use for various illnesses such as AIDS, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis, and side effects of marijuana are all examined and discussed in depth.
This comprehensive resource is a compendium of articles from the Journal of Cannabis Therapeuticswith additional contemporary commentary. It presents startling research that explores and supports the medicinal value of cannabis use and its derivatives as a valid therapeutic resource for pain and inflammation, for several illnesses less responsive to other therapies, and even for certain veterinary uses. Cannabinoids such as nabilone, THC, levonantradol, ajulemic acid, dexanabinal, and others are extensively described, with a review of new indications for cannabinoid pharmaceuticals. The book is carefully referenced to encourage your examination of previous studies and provides tables and figures to enhance understanding of information.
The Handbook of Cannabis Therapeutics discusses:
the uses of cannabis in Arabic, Greek, Roman, and early English medicines
absorption rates
pharmacokinetics
pharmacodynamics
separate extracts versus the use of cannabis in its entirety
the therapeutic value of the endocannabinoid system
cannabinoids and newborn feeding
a comparison of smoking versus oral preparations
clinical research data on eating cannabis
therapeutic uses as appetite stimulant
treatments in obstetrics and gynecology
medicinal treatments used in Jamaica
the use of cannabis in the treatment of multiple sclerosis
the benefits versus the adverse side effects of cannabis use
The Handbook of Cannabis Therapeutics is a reference work certain to become crucial to physicians, psychologists, researchers, biochemists, graduate students, and interested members of the public.

A Must Read for the Cannabis Aficionado.......2000-03-26
This book is a wonderful compilation of the history of cannabis/marijuana and is superbly illustrated with many drawings and photographs. The authors do a great job of presenting the information about this plant without being biased towards legalization or total criminalization issues. After reading this book in a local library, I decided I needed to have a copy for myself. Thanks, Amazon, for having it in stock at such a great price.

Book Description
Whether you are a staunch supporter of marijuana, a passionate opponent, or somewhere in the vast in-between, one thing is for sure: there is no issue hotter than hemp. Cannabis is the first completely illustrated guide to all the ways which marijuana affects the lives of the user and nonuser alike. Included in the text are the many uses of marijuana, past and present, including discussions on medicinal marijuana, recreational smoking, and the use of pot for creative inspiration. Also addressed are the politics of pot, in particular how marijuana legislation has, in fact, increased use of the drug and caused an increase in potency. Cannabis also shows how different religions throughout the world have utilized hemp as a spiritual tool, oftentimes to enhance devotion and prayer. Green tackles all the important issues surrounding marijuana, including the “gateway drug” theory and the scientific causes of the “high.” Supplementing the text are 150 full-color and 30 black-and-white photographs illuminating the worldwide uses of marijuana, as well as an extensive dictionary of marijuana-related terms and endpapers made of high quality hemp paper. Cannabis is an often humorous, always enlightening look at the world’s most famous drug.

Book Description
Cannabis Britannica explores the historical origins of the UK's legislation and regulations on cannabis preparations before 1928. It draws on published and unpublished sources from the seventeenth century onwards, from archives in the UK and India, to show how the history of cannabis and the British before the twentieth century was bound up with imperialism. James Mills argues that until the 1900s, most of the information and experience gathered by British sources were drawn from colonial contexts as imperial administrators governed and observed populations where use of cannabis was extensive and established. This is most obvious in the 1890s when British anti-opium campaigners in the House of Commons seized on the issue of Government of India excise duties on the cannabis trade in Asia in order to open up another front in their attacks on imperial administration. The result was that cannabis preparations became a matter of concern in Parliament which accordingly established the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission. The story in the twentieth century is of the momentum behind moves to include cannabis substances in domestic law and in international treaties. The latter was a matter of the diplomatic politics of imperialism, as Britain sought to defend its cannabis revenues in India against American and Egyptian interests. The domestic story focuses on the coming together of the police, the media, and the pharmaceutical industry to form misunderstandings of cannabis that forced it onto the Poisons Schedule despite the misgivings of the Home Office and of key medical professionals. The book is the first full history of the origins of the moments when cannabis first became subjected to laws and regulations in Britain.

Book Description
Wonder drug or social menace? The perennial question may never be answered, as factions on both sides hold fast to their beliefs. Doctors and scientists hail its medicinal merits while politicians and others insist that cannabis, in any form, is the first step down the slippery slope to serious drug addiction. This book explores all views to form an honest contemporary picture. Dozens of photographs are included.

Book Description
This fascinating, entertaining, and often grueling book by James Mills examines the lunatic asylums set up by the British in 19th-century India. The author asserts that there was a growth in asylums following the Indian Mutiny, fuelled by the fear of itinerant and dangerous individuals, which existed primarily in the British imagination. Once established, however, these asylums, which were staffed by Indians and populated by Indians, quickly became arenas in which the designs of the British were contested and confronted. Mills argues that power is everywhere and is behind every action; colonial power is therefore just another way to assert control over the less powerful. The social history draws on official archives and documents based in Scotland, England, and India.

Customer Reviews:
Useful but not essential.......2005-10-16
A shortcoming of this book is that most of it assumes you have a car. (There are short blurbs on buses and trains but they're of limited use.) While I suppose you could always rent one, there are often more economical and efficient ways of getting about. I was in Scotland this summer and found the restaurant + pub coverage a little outdated; I imagine that will be fixed in the next edition, which is due to come out next spring. A note about Wetherspoon pubs (cheap beer and food) and the non-gourmet food scene in general would have been helpful.
I'm not sure you need a guidebook for Scotland; there's so much free travel literature available at the information centres and online that I rarely found myself consulting this book. But if you want a guidebook this is still a pretty good one because it's so detailed and thorough.
Great Resource.......2003-12-21
It is pretty hard to cover the entire country, with travel tips, in only 400 pages, but Fodor's does an excellent job. Not many photographs, it is all business describing locations and sites. This would be an excellent book if you are planning to go to Scotland and are not sure what part (the Eyewitness Scotland guide is perfect for that also, and has a lot more photographs). Although I knew which part I was going to and had travel books for those specific areas, the Fodor's guide had information in it about those areas the other books did not. With Scotland, there are many side trips in all directions, and this book can give you some ideas. Well written, concise, informative: A great resource for the money.
Great Guide.......2003-10-02
My husband and I found this book extremely helpful- he was able to pick out the golf courses he wanted to visit, I was able to pick out the castles I wanted to see; the hotels the book recommended were excellent; and the practical advice about driving, eating, tipping and understanding the local accent was great.
