Book Description
It’s a sun-scorched world where clouds rarely come and nothing seems to move. That is, until children ages 6 - 9 up look a little closer to find tortoises, toads, and lizards, not to mention the scary rattlesnake and scorpion. Here, plants send their roots deep into the earth to find water, beetles stand on their head and shoot a stinky spray to fight off enemies, and roadrunners whiz by sleepy turtles and nervous desert mice on their way to ... where? Kids need only light clothes and a few simple pieces of equipment to explore the enchantments of cactus country.

Both interesting and informative.......1999-04-10
I reviewed this book for The Home School Manual =============================
One Small Square One Small Square, Cactus Desert "Whew! It's hot: 115°F (46°C), and the temperature is still climbing. . . . Welcome to cactus country. Home of rattlesnakes and roadrunners, yuccas and chuckwallas. . . . In this desert you will discover animals that never take a drink of water and plants that double as 'apartment houses.' . . ." On turning the page we are told that exploring offers many surprises, but to be prepared in case one of the surprises happens to be a scorpion or another dangerous creature.
The words, "small square," emphasize the idea that careful observation, even in a small space, yields a wealth of interesting information. And the book itself is square (9" X 9"). You are shown life under the ground as well as above it. Notes in the illustrations point out interesting facts, and each chapter of two or more pages deals with a general topic like protection from the heat, dangers in the night, or how certain plants and animals take quick advantage of a rare rainfall. One chapter near the end explains that some deserts (including Antarctica) are cold. Names are given for all the plants and creatures shown. Studying this book is, in some ways, even better than visiting the desert itself. The book offers good science and would even make a great gift.
One of a series of Small Square books by Donald M. Silver. This one is illustrated by Patricia J. Wynne. For readers 7 to 12 (as if adults wouldn't have fun learning all these things, too). Hardcover, 48 pp. Was $14.95. 1995, from another publisher.

Book Description
It’s a land of riddles, where a winter night can last for weeks and where the ground is full of water though it rarely rains or snows. Bears, hares, wolves, and foxes roam the ice-crusted earth, as flowers follow the sun as it moves across the sky. Young readers may never come to the Arctic tundra, but now it can come to them—in a book chock full of fun-to-do experiments and activities for children ages 6 and up that help them to solve some of the mysteries of this strange and forbidding world. Arctic Tundra includes a picture field guide, a glossary-index, and a resource list.

Charlotte Mason/Montessori type book.......2007-07-24
This book is so much fun and educational. Great for multiple ages and learning styles. It has beautiful pictures and easy to do projects with little preparation, but a lifetime worth of learning!
Book Description
This book offers readers a bug’s-eye view into the strange and fascinating world of carnivorous plants. From the “jaws” of the Venus flytrap to the pretty sundew plant whose delicate tentacles entrap its prey, the unique anatomy and behaviors of meat-eating plants are detailed with clear, engaging text and art.
Customer Reviews:
Love the Hungry Plants!.......2007-01-09
My daughter loved every page of the book. It is a learning book and does so in a very interesting way. My daughter couldn't stop saying how good this book was. I would recommend it to anyone!
Excellent first book on carnivorous plants.......2005-09-08
This is an excellent first book to fire up the interest of children in carnivorous plants. This is a hobby of mine, and I have an extensive collection, and am interested in conservation of their habitats.
The book talks about the major genera of carnivorous plants (although it completely skips Pinguicula, the butterworts). The full-color illustrations are beautiful and accurate. The information in the book is all factually accurate. It even briefly covers conservation.
Interesting details on plants.......2003-08-08
I bought this book along with Plants Bite Back. We had already read our library copy of the Plants Bite Back and I actually was not sure I needed another book on carniverous plants. To my surprise, this little book offers other very important and interesting details on plants that are not in the other book (which is an excellent book also).
I am glad we got this book (e.g.it explained why we shouldn't keep touching the Venus Flytrap--it probably saved the plant's life from inquisitive little hands).
Fascinating.......2001-08-07
This is one entralling book! I knew there were meat eating plants, but I never thought of them as "passive" and "active". The book is broken up in cute sections, "Gulp!" and "Slurp!" being my favorite, but the entire book keeps your interest. The drawings are quite excellent and you learn a lot just by looking at the pictures. I really enjoyed it and my little brother just loves it. A hit.
Hungry Plants.......2000-05-09
Great subject, and wonderfully presented with interesting scientific facts and beautiful illustrations. This book made learning about insect eating plants a treat.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoy Fodor's Guide, Swords at Sunset, Magdalene Mandala .......2007-01-03
Fodor's Guide to The Da Vinci Code offers an interesting though limited way to insert a fictional novel into reality by taking the reader through real life locations cited in Dan Brown's bestseller. I recommend this book as it adds to the Da Vinci Code experience. Also recommended is Swords at Sunset by Michael Bradley; another remarkable book that takes you deeper into a truly intellectual journey examining the origins and importance of the Holy Grail. As most Grail enthusiasts know, Bradley served as a researcher for the Da Vinci Code movie starring Tom Hanks. Bradley has also written more than 20 critically acclaimed books and is a recognized Holy Grail expert whose Swords at Sunset book is the third part of a non-fiction Grail trilogy. Don't worry though, Swords at Sunset stands on its own as a fascinating non-fiction account of how the Knights Templar spirited the Holy Grail - the Jesus bloodline - into North America centuries before Columbus "discovered" this land. Also worth checking out is Bradley's latest fictional novel, The Magdalene Mandala, which focuses on the Grail throughout a breakneck twisting plot that will have you on the edge of your seat. In my view, and that of many others, The Magdalene Mandala is a far better novel than the Da Vinci Code, possibly due to Bradley's expertise on matters concerning the Holy Grail. In fact, for the full Grail experience, I'd recommend getting Fodor's Guide, Swords at Sunset and the Magdalene Mandala. All three add up to rich feast that's all food for thought.
Don't just read about the Da Vinci Code adventure, live it!.......2006-05-24
Who hasn't wanted to travel along with Robert Langdon as he explores the Da Vinci Code? Even if you can't insert yourself into the novel, you can recreate the adventure on your next European vacation.
The editor has done a great job in pulling together disparate material and making it cohesive and coherent.
This book is the perfect companion to the novel, and it will help personalize the movie experience if you have the chance to visit Europe. I found the Fodor's Guide to The Da Vinci Code extremely helpful on a recent trip to London, and I look forward to using it in Paris and other cities.
Definitely not al dente.......2006-05-16
This is a poorly researched and badly written attempt to cash in on The Da Vinci Code phenomenon. It dishes up its so called insights into the Da Vinci Code like an overcooked pasta with a tomato sauce straight out of the can. And as a travel guide it is next to useless.
An Armchair Travel Adventure.......2006-05-01
I wasn't expecting much from this book at first. Why would Fodor's review a book? But as I crept in from page to page it made perfect sense. The book evokes every scene and landscape in the Da Vinci code, bringing new layers of both the book and the scenes its set in to life. A totally engaging read. Even if you can't travel to Europe to explore this first-hand, this book will totally reel you in, making you feel like you've been there. It made me want to read the Da Vinci code again.
WAY More Than a Travel Guide.......2006-04-19
When I first saw this book, I assumed it was just a travel guide (since it's Fodor's) -- but it's actually so much more.
I only just read The Da Vinci Code (must have been the last in the world) so my appetite for any and all related material is still raging.
This book's way better than one of those special issues of Newsweek that rehash the same old theories -- it totally hit the spot. The photos are amazing and the essays are smart and funny. And I'll definitely go back to the travel info when I plan my next trip Europe.
Book Description
It was 1989 when Shepard Fairey, a student at the Rhode Island School of Design, first created the now-infamous THE GIANT HAS A POSSE sticker. The black and white image of the huge wrestler's subdued and vacant stare became an underground icon and by the mid-90's about a half-million had been posted around the world.
This monograph is a reprint of a limited edition paperback published in Japan. It documents Shepard Fairey's career from his creation of the Giant phenomenon up to and including the advent of Black Market, a San Diego design agency Fairey formed with Dave Kinsey and Philip Dewolff and which focuses on the action sport and music industries. Today Shepard Fairey creates designs for high profile clients such as Pepsi and Universal Pictures, produces Giant art, exhibits worldwide in galleries, and still keeps his Giant images on the streets.
Customer Reviews:
OBEY creator revealed.......2005-06-08
If you always wondered what the hell the "GIANT" posters meant, now you can read their creator's book and find out. Includes great photography of Shepard Fairey's work from around the world. This new Hardcover edition is a really nice edition.
meh.......2004-09-09
the book's good if you'r really into the obey giant type stuff. it doesn't have much text, and is really thin. i also wished it covered more of his non-giant work, and more recent graphic design work. but if you like seeing the giant in the star a lot, more power to you.
