ASIN: 1852232641 |
Book Description
Cacti and succulents are ideal houseplants, needing little care and providing unusual and colourful displays. This book looks at the increasingly wide variety of plants now available, and assists the beginner to choose and cultivate many of the popular types. Full details are given on feeding, watering, potting, and on displaying the collection to its best advantage. An A-Z listing of over 75 varieties shows the wide diversity of shapes, sizes, and effects that can be grown.
Customer Reviews:
Keen by Name, Keen by Nature.......2004-10-27
This is a splendid book and the enthusiasm of the author shines through. No book on cacti can give all the answers, the subject is too vast. The author of this book takes the sensible approach and ensures that the content is well written and informative. The photographs in the book are excellent and show some species that are not normally seen in this type of book, particulary the Asclepiadaceae family. The feeling that the author would like you the reader to know exactly what he knows comes through strongly. There are articles on pests and diseases, grafting, watering and soil mixtures and even some tips on showing your plants. For those people who have a small collection of plants and want to keep them healthy and flowering, without going into too many technicalities, this is the book for you, and excellent value too.

Useful for Planning.......2007-04-10
Purchased this book to help with planning for a forthcoming trip to Scotland. Seems fairly informative, but can only really review it after taking the trip.
Got me excited about my trip.......2007-02-21
I have an older edition of the Frommer's Scotland, and I really love it. It is arranged nicely (by region mostly), and gives a lot of details about the biggest cities and most popular tourist attractions. However, it also gives some great regional information and stuff about the smaller towns. I like that it gives you admission prices, hours etc. for most attractions (the prices in my book are outdated, but still a good general idea). I haven't traveled to Scotland yet, but this book has got me very excited about my upcoming holiday. Very practical information!!
Pretty good coverage, but not great for budget travellers.......2006-04-12
I'm planning a trip to Scotland (leaving next week), and have never used Frommer's guides before. It has good suggestions for interesting touristy places to visit in Scotland, and gives a well written, concise historical description of the sites, which I like.
However, for booking hotels, I haven't selected a single suggestion from Frommers. This is because their suggestions are generally way too expensive. For example, looking for accomodations in the Orkney Islands, you'd think it was impossible to spend less than $150 a night if you relied exclusively on this guide. On the web, I found that there are at least a handful two and three star hotels in Kirkwall that were less than $100 a night, and look very nice.
Also, it says in Frommer's that it's ~$100 to travel by train to Edinburgh from London, but it doesn't mention that there are actually a huge range of fares, from ~$20 to more than $200 at www.virgin.com/trains, that depends on how early you purchase the tickets, and how flexible you want the ticket to be.
From these and other examples, I've decided that Frommer's is a fine place to start for an overview and figuring out where I want to go, but I'd end up unnecessarily spending a fortune if I relied on it for the practical stuff.
Frommers Guide To Scotland.......2006-03-16
I like the book. It is very informative and seems to have quite a few interesting areas listed. I also wanted fishing as a side trip and this book listed the best places to go.
Frommer's Scotland.......2003-02-03
Of all the travel books I purchased for my first trip to Scotland, the Frommer's edition is the one I used and kept after my trip. It is comprehensive, detailed, and gives good advice. It had all the attractions I wanted to visit and more. They also have a great website as a reference tool.

Scotland's a country to see by car. With its lochs and hills, small towns and country inns, you lose a lot of autonomy by depending on public transportation. Frommer's guide presents 25 itineraries--all with precise directions, distances and drive times, sights along the way, history, nature, and family-oriented highlights, recommended walks, scenic side trips, and detailed, accurate route-planning maps.
Divvied up into four regions with five to seven tours each, the routes take one to three days to drive. The writing is informative, and the color photography is splendid, assisting with the task of choosing among the many fine trips. If you're after stony castles, hillside ambles, breathtaking mountain scenery, and watching a man hand-weave tartans on a loom, the "Doon the Watter" tour might appeal, while the "Queen of the South" tour features prehistoric chambered tombs, the Kircudbright Wildlife Park, and a rocky memorial to Robert the Bruce. If, on the other hand, jagged sea shores, old whaling centers, whisky distilleries, and stones with Pictish symbols are more to your fancy, "The Fishing Trail" might interest you more. Either way, Frommer's guide provides wonderful assistance in selecting then enjoying the sort of Scottish holiday you had in mind.

Excellent guide to seeing Scotland from behind the wheel.......2006-02-10
This review is for the 6th edition, 2005 printing.
Excellent guide to seeing Scotland with a sports car or a recreational vehicle (RV; a home on wheels). You will enjoy some great driving tours and routes through this historical region of United Kingdom.
Frommers has recently come out with more "Best-Loved Driving Tours" series ... guides that are not very inexpensive, but are very well researched and quite comprehensive. One will have plenty of driving tours and routes to chose from, whether you like arts and museums, scenic roads and breathtaking views, urban towns and shopping, or just want to experience a regione's culture and life.
Unlike the other Frommer guides that are fatter and heavier, this little book gives you not too many specifics on lodging or eating. It is geared strictly for the person behind the wheel and her or his passengers.
I have had a great experience using this guide and will recommend it to anyone who can afford it. Also, you might want to check to see if your library carries it and check it out for the duration of your visit abroad.
When I backpacked 4 months through Europe I had a copy of the Lonely Planet for Europe (a thick and heavy book) because it covered more cities and esoteric towns, a ripped chapters of all the international youth hostals Europe of the countries I visited, and as primary guide for nominal cities and capitals I used Frommers (ripped the book and kept only chapters of countries planning to visit - so I can keep the weight down).
This book definitely came in handy.......2003-08-15
For all the hours we spent in the car, this book definitely came in handy. With full-color photos and maps, history and tips on scenic side trips, this guide was the best for our driving tour. The itineraries were well thought out and were a great guide and resource.
Didn't look at this one at all.......2003-06-20
I really wasn't very impressed with the outline. I would recommend Scoland the Best and then the Eyewitness guide as a must if traveling to Scotland. It was not very specific, and the tours for the most part were too long. Most were 2 days, and we were in different places every other night which really didn't allow us to do what the tours suggest.
How much time do you have?.......2003-03-30
This book is going to be of little use to someone who is going to Scotland for a week to 10 days for their first visit. It seems that the original audience for this book is the AA, Automobile Assn (in the US, AAA) members looking for vacations or day trips. Although the book gives 25 great routes to take for scenery, it does not spend very much space telling you about what it is you are seeing when you get there, assuming you already know the history of the castle and so forth.
This book could be very helpful if you were going to be in country for a couple of weeks or months, then coupled with more informative, detail oriented guides, this could lead you to some wonderful vistas. Depends on how much time you have, and what you have seen already in Scotland. If you have been there before, a leisurely driving trip could be just the thing.

Backpacker's Dream Come True.......2000-05-17
I backpacked the UK in September of 1999 by myself. This book helped make the trip one of the best times I've had in my life. It was frequently the envy of fellow hostel-goers, and was often seen on hand in the hostel libraries. The directions to individual hostels can't be beat and the 'things to do' areas are great as well. I realize that this book is out of print now (why?), but if you plan on backpacking the UK, FIND A COPY! If you absolutely cannot, email me at bryan@n-o-s-p-a-m.dugger.com (remove the n-o-s-p-a-m.)
This book saved my life!!.......1997-01-12
I'm not a great reader but this book saved my life. I was in GB with girlfriend and girlfriend dumped me. In London. She left this book behind. I took Kristina Cordero's advice as godspell and traveled alone all over the island. All the places where just as described in the book. When I wanted to be alone, I went where she said so and viceversa. A really great book for anyone who wants to travel. But it's also a great read. I never went to Scotland but I read about it anyway! And laughed!
Josh Remsen, San Diego, CA
Spunky, smart, and indispensable to today's budget traveller.......1996-07-19
Cordero's guide provides a to-the-point analysis of the premiere budget retreats of the region, and she does so with wit and spunk. Her guide is noteworthy in that it also guides readers to the major sights of each area, including some more funky, less-touristed ones. Cordero's in-depth hostel reviews do not hesitate to comment on virtually any aspect of the hostel: whether it is a long trek from the train station, whether the roosters awaken guests at the crack of dawn, whether the hostel cooks make a mean breakfast...it is a pleasure to read a guide written by a fellow budget traveler who obviously relished her experiences traversing the British Isles, and who delights in sharing them along with her great money-saving tips. A-one guide

choice depends on your style of travel.......2002-04-18
I checked this out of my local library along with Lonely Planet's version for comparison before buying a guidebook for my trip. Frommer's has good coverage of major sights to see in the more popular tourist spots. However, their book skipped a lot of lesser-known sights and areas that were covered in Lonely Planet (I particularly noticed this for archaeological sites, my own favorite category). On the other hand, Frommer's provides better coverage of hotels and restaraunts, and includes a wider range of middle- to high-priced choices, especially. If your approach to travel is to see as much as is humanly possible each day and return to your hotel only to sleep (as mine is), I'd go with Lonely Planet's version for its more thorough coverage of lesser-known destinations and its budget lodgings. If you like to choose distinctive hotels and restaraunts and spend a significant part of your trip enjoying them, Frommer's is probably a better option.

If the book was written by Frommer, it is a great book. I can't wait to go to scotland. He gave maps that were legible, rated restaurants and hotels in all price ranges and lots of helpful hints for first time and regular travellers.

I've used by copy over and over for years-- its for children but I use it myself. This is a giant oversized book gives an excellent visual overview of Jewish history, beginning approximately 5,000 years before the birth of Christ and ending with the present time. A time line summarizes the text and places Jewish history in the context of general world history. Includes 300 photographs, maps, charts, and drawings.

If you love packaging and photography...you will need to get this book. The selection of packaging featured are very inspiring. And the price offered by Amazon makes the buy so much more worthwhile.
Amazing!.......2001-11-14
This book shows the best works in pakaging design to date. It inspires and informs me about the high standard of the real world of packaging. From Gymboree to Budweiser, it shows a wide range of works. It is a "must-have" for students and professionals alike. With the current price (...) it's a bargain. Thanks Amazon for selling it so cheap. Remember "You learn from the best."
