A life raft in a sea of confusion!.......2005-12-10
This book got me through Microbiology lab--easy to understand, and thorough. Everything you could want to know about a bacterium or a species is detailed here for you! I'm not selling this one back! Get this if you don't want to be writing reports in the middle of the night, going "oh, shoot, I didn't look up this or that bit of information in my professor's copy!"
worth it's weight in gold!
A GOOD MANUAL WITH OLD COSTLY GISTS.......2003-01-04
This "Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology" has an admirable practical approach. It depicted the characteristics of bacterial groups in a straightforward manner. Using a wide focus, it featured vivid illustrations, which will enable you to reason like a professional. The manual provided a good number of easy-to-master materials.
However, I felt that this 9th Edition, which first appeared in 1994, is just too old. The authors should give us a more recent update. Also, the high retail price of this book ensured that many people would go for a better alternative. There are lots of them out there! The choice is yours.
A good reference for little organisms.......2000-06-30
The book is big and heavy and is filled with useful information for the world of microorganisms. All microbiology majors must have this book in their libraries. This book helps you identify, compare, and understand microorganisms better. Every organism is descibed in detail: gram-stain reactions, fermentation reaction, morphology, etc.

The Woman of the Apocalypse.......2002-09-17
This is an incredible scholarly account on the origins of the Virgin de Guadalupe and as the tittle implies how she became a Mexican National Symbol. The author is an ordained Catholic priest with a doctorate which lends to his credibility and not just having an axe to grind to disprove the authenticity of the popularly held belief of the apparition. Although this book could fit easily into a college textbook requirement for a serious study of La Guadalupana or Mexican History, the book is a suprisingly easy read considering all the information presented. The information is a bit esoteric at times but if followed closely reveals a different picture on the credibility of the appearance of La Virgin de Guadalupe to Juan Diego in 1531 in Tepeyec. The actual apparition comes into question for the reader to make their own judgements. What the book reveals are conflicting stories, embellished accounts and contradictory information with timelines that question the authenticity of the original known date of the appearance. The book is extremely detailed as the author begins by setting the stage with a proper perspective of the time period and the Indio and Spanish society in New Spain. Poole asserts that the story of the Virgen Mary's appearance in the New World was not neccessarily created for the Indios, as is popularily thought, but rather for the the Spaniards to have their own Mary in New Spain. I was reluctant to read this book for quite awhile because I thought it might be too dense but rather I found the first hand accounts extremely interesting and easy to follow. Besides, I am a believer in La Virgin de Guadalupa and I did not want to shake my faith. Poole has created an exhaustive study of great importance that shows the problems with the account based on sermons, Bishops wills, the building of the chapel and writings from the time period especially those of the criollo priests Miguel Sanchez and Luis Laso de la Vega on the subject . What is shown is that for more than a hundred years little mention was made to the appearance whereas it should have been the major religious event in New Spain. Reverend Poole articulates his case incorporating all facets of the appearance including the Mexican Goddess Tonantizin ,Our Lady of Extremadura, Virgin of Remedios and shows that although distinct their are many common threads running through the imagery and stories surrounding the origins of La Guadalupana. The creation of a national symbol has it's origins not in 1531 but some one hundred plus years later in 1648 based upon his scholarly report. Criolloismo (Spaniards born in New Spain) an Indian and a "new" Mary were the catalyst for the emergence of the national symbol of Mexico. When all is said and done Reverend Poole asserts that there is no objective historical basis for the symbolism but that the image has been manipulated throughtout the years to meet the needs of the Mexican people. The book has an excellent chronology of events, extensive footnotes and and exhaustive bibliography. Although somewhat disheartening, faith is not measured by empirical eveidence so I continue to be a faithful believer in La Virgin de Guadalupe but only now more informed on it's true origins. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Juan Diego or who wants to more about how La Virgin de Guadalupe came to be such an important icon of Mexican faith.
A very useful book.......2000-05-24
Stafford Poole makes a deep and concise research based on guadalupan sources. The book results quite useful , as it brings new interpretations and critic statements related to many of well-known writers on the guadalupan subject.
Book Description
Baseball is set apart from other sports by many things, but few are more distinctive than the intricate systems of coded language that govern action on the field and give baseball its unique appeal. During a nine-inning game, more than 1,000 silent instructions are given-from catcher to pitcher, coach to batter, fielder to fielder, umpire to umpire-and without this speechless communication the game would simply not be the same. Baseball historian Paul Dickson examines for the first time the rich legacy of baseball's hidden language, offering fans everywhere a smorgasbord of history and anecdote.
Baseball's tradition of signing grew out of the signal flags used by ships and soldiers' hand signals during battle. They were first used in games during the Civil War, and then professionally by the Cincinnati Red Stockings, in 1869. Seven years later, the Hartford Dark Blues appear to be the first team to steal signs, introducing a larcenous obsession that, as Dickson delightfully chronicles, has given the game some of its most historic-and outlandish-moments.
Whether detailing the origins of the hit-and-run, the true story behind the home run that gave "Home Run" Baker his nickname, Bob Feller's sign-stealing telescope, Casey Stengel's improbable method of signaling his bullpen, the impact of sign stealing on the Giants' miraculous comeback in 1951, or the pitches Andy Pettitte tipped off that altered the momentum of the 2001 World Series, Dickson's research is as thorough as his stories are entertaining. A roster of baseball's greatest names and games, past and present, echoes throughout, making The Hidden Language of Baseball a unique window on the history of our national pastime.
Customer Reviews:
A fine chronology of player signals.......2005-10-07
During any given nine-inning baseball game over a thousand silent instructions are given between players and from umpires to coaches. You've seen the hand signals - now understand their meaning in the first examination of their history, evolution and methods. Baseball games are surveyed past and present to gain a fine chronology of player signals.
Play Ball!.......2004-07-17
A short but thorough history of baseball as seen through the development of signs, sign stealing and tip-off reading. Includes some delightful photographs, numerous anotations, a lengthy bibliography and index. Paul Dickson's approach to baseball makes me wonder if the recent homerun records aren't more a case for renewed talent in sign stealing / tip-off reading than for new technology for bats or performance inhancing drugs.
A surprising & fascinating look at behind-the-scenes basebal.......2003-06-30
Forget the simple theory that Bobby Thomson benefitted from a stolen sign when he hit the historic homer off Ralph Branca in 1951. Dickson gives us the real story--a much more colorful and fascinating peek at baseball's most memorable moment. That's just one of many new and interesting facts and anecdotes in this first-of-its kind book. I've written baseball books myself and I tip my hat to this one.
Everything you should know about what you thought you knew.......2003-06-28
Paul Dickson has done it again! Here's a book that all baseball fans will love, even those modest folk who know everything there is to know about the game. "The Hidden Language of Baseball" is the book to read -- after you make it a most valuable gift to your kids, who have often asked you (as if you knew) what those goofy and not-so goofy signs mean, who dreamed them up and how come the other team doesn't steal them, which, of course, they try their darndest to do. Paul Dickson takes the reader through baseball sign language from its very earliest recorded years to the wild and wooly "Golden Age" of flagrantly outrageous stealing and to today's signing in full view of the ever-improving intrusiveness of high-tech TV lenses. The book is full of wonderful anecdotes - a Dizzy Dean classic will have you roaring with delight. Like "The Dickson Baseball Dictionary", this book is a must for baseball fans of all ages.

Designer's will find advice and examples that illustrate superb uses of image, type, color, graphics, paper, size, format and printing. They'll also get guidelines for meeting the needs of their clients, creating high impact designs on a low budget and using special production techniques, including thermography, letterpress and die cutting.
* Features award-winning work from today's hottest designers
* Provides a reference for contemporary designs that stand above the rest
Customer Reviews:
DePaulian.......2004-08-06
If you want step-by-step instruction on how to design a letterhead, this book isn't for you, but if you want to see lots of letterheads and business cards that push the artistic boundaries and that will inspire you to rethink your options when designing, then you've love this book. The captions are more in-depth than those of other books of this kind, and consist of quotes straight from the designers themselves on what
they did, and how they did it--way better than just telling you what you can see for yourself.
To each their own . . ........2002-03-17
This book is great if you are looking for some inspiration or finding out which programs can be used to do what. However; this book was not written (and I use the term "written" loosely) for someone with less than 5-6 years of design under their belt.
Fortunately, I am one of those people, nonetheless, I still didn't care for this book. There wasn't enough verbal-meat to sink your teeth into and say "Oh, that's how that was done." The authour would rather keep you guessing.
