Very complete book in a great concise format.......2006-11-07
Bottom line, I bought three books for my trip to NYC. In the end, this was the only book I needed during the trip. It has great summaries of all the major areas of the city, very nice detailed street and site location maps, subway maps, etc. If you want an easy to read quick review/guide book to have during your trip to NYC, this is the one I would recommend.

Customer Reviews:
worked well for us.......2004-08-16
The best thing about this guide is the format. It is arranged alphabetically and each 'attraction' is on a two-page spread and contains description, tips, address, hours, age range, website, cost AND nearby kid-friendly places to eat and a 'hey kids' fun fact or something to look for when visiting this attraction. There are cross-reference lists by category (parks, museums, sports, etc.) and by neighborhood. This is a supplement -- not the only guide to carry since it has no maps -- but lots of useful information.
Useless.......2004-06-14
While this book does contain good descriptions of places to visit with kids it does not contain enough inforamation to function as a primary guidebook. It contains absolutely no general information about NYC, getting around, places to stay. It is not organized by neighborhood, has no maps, and gives no information on getting to the recommended venues. It also offers only very limited information on places to eat. In short, you can buy it as a supplement if you like (however, Frommers NYC with Kids lists all the same activities and provides all the necessary general info) but frankly I found this book to be useless.
Easy to Use.......2002-08-23
A quick and to-the-point guide. Well organized with info on neighborhood restaurants on the same page as the description of the attraction. And the size makes it easy to slip in a coat pocket or purse. Perfect.
A must have - especially for parents with young children.......2000-03-28
This book is so easy to read. All sites are listed in alphabetical order, so there is no flipping to the index that I had to do with other books. It gives a good, parent based review on many of the most popular NYC sites.

Customer Reviews:
outdated???.......2003-05-30
It certainly is a cute little book, very portable. The maps are nice and I can just imagine myself walking down the street and whipping out the book to find a cozy little bar in Chelsea.
However, the book it is very out of date. Here is an example excerpt "WHERE TO START DAY 2: World Trade Center. The twin towers practically define the lower Manhattan skyline....."
If it still has info about the WTC, then perhaps the other info is also not quite up-to-date?
Here's to you..........2000-07-21
This is a cool little guide for a weekend in the Big Apple. Designed for travelers with two days to burn, it shows you the highlights through walking tours. A small map is included, providing a quick overview of New York's layout. The city is broken down into districts (ie. SoHo & Greenwich Village, Chinatown and East Village) with a selection of restaurants, stores, and attractions for each one. All in all, a good deal. One note of caution however: this guide is the same size as a credit card, but the covers are magnets. So don't put this near any of your credit cards or computer disks. It could do a number on your Visa!

Book Description
The last two decades of the 20th century have witnessed over thirty-five civil wars and an even larger number of lower intensity conflicts worldwide. Widespread brutalization and ethnic cleansing, often resulting in large movements of population, characterize many of the conflicts. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that there are currently 50 million people who are victims of forced displacement, 40- 80 % of whom will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The mental health problems among asylum seekers and refugees are becoming a public issue, but the awareness of societies and mental health professionals considering this problem is relatively low. Although advances have been made in the provision of innovative mental health services for asylum seekers and refuges with PTSD, they are not systemized, and not widely known to professionals in the field. A publication offering practical guidelines for the treatment of torture victims and political refugees does not exist.Broken Spirits brings together the works of the most respected mental health professionals--from the U.S. and abroad--and make available the most current knowledge on complex PTSD, forced migration and cultural sensitivity in diagnosis and treatment.

Book Description
The issue of asylum seekers and refugees is one of the most talked about subjects in contemporary politics, fueled by extensive coverage in the media. David J. Whittaker's book provides a balanced introduction to this very controversial subject.
Asylum Seekers and Refugees in the Contemporary World discusses the international as well as national implications of the issue, looking at the way different governments have dealt with it. Taking a number of case studies, for example Palestinian, Afghan and Iraqi refugees, Whittaker cuts through the emotive language to give an objective introduction to the subject. The book looks in detail at the issue as it has affected Britain and Europe in particular, as well as including material on the UN and its response to the refugee "problem".
Including a final statement on the British government's 2005 proposals for dealing with refugees, Asylum Seekers and Refugees in the Contemporary World is essential reading for all students of the history of the modern world and is ideal for newcomers to the subject.

Book Description
Two groups of refugees arrived in Australia in 1999: Kosovar refugees and Chinese boat people. One group was welcomed with open arms; the other was interned. Don McMaster analyses Australia's discriminatory policy towards the group that it has constructed as its 'other': the 'hordes from the north', the 'yellow peril'. He locates the earliest fear of 'Asians' in attitudes to Chinese goldminers in the 1850s. Half a century later this fear culminated in the White Australia policy, enshrined in the first legislation of the new federal Parliament. Thus the very beginnings of Australia's immigration policy were explicitly racist. Asylum Seekers is an indictment of present policies and a call to create a more humane response to people who desperately seek asylum.

Book Description
Over the past two years the arrival of "boat people" on the Australian coast has re-ignited fears of a massive influx of refugees and asylum seekers. The response of the Australian government has helped to generate unease in the community, obscuring many of the real issues that arise when people seek sanctuary within Australia's borders. In this provocative book Peter Mares examines the legal, moral, and political questions posed by Australia's treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. He visits Woomera, site of Australia's biggest and newest immigration detention center, talks to refugees, their lawyers, detention center staff and the Australian immigration minister, and reports in detail on cases which pose significant questions about the direction of Australian policy. Drawing on a wide range of official and nonofficial sources, Mares paints a compelling and disturbing picture of Australian policy in action.

Book Description
Recent advances in trauma treatment, coupled with ongoing traumatic world events, point to a critical need for global standards in assessment. But despite the best intentions of Western psychology, one model does not fit all cultures. Cross-Cultural Assessment of Psychological Trauma and PTSD addresses key issues in the field to help fill this knowledge gap.
Focusing equally on theoretical concepts, culturally valid assessment methods, and cultural adaptation in trauma and resilience, 29 experts present the cutting edge of research and strategies. Extended case examples (including West Africans in Austria, Hmong in the U.S., and Aboriginal people in Australia) illustrate an informative range of symptom profiles, comorbid conditions, and coping skills, as well as secondary traumas that can occur in asylum seekers. Professional concerns are also highlighted, from training and competency issues to the challenges of translating assessment into treatment. The results are a vital set of insights and guidelines that will contribute to more aware and meaningful practice.
Included in the coverage:
- Twenty-one questions central to understanding trauma in cultural context.
- In-depth studies on the effects of trauma over multiple generations, and developmental issues among traumatized youth.
- A review of traditional interventions and current trauma assessment practice from China.
- Reports on the combined use of psycho- and pharmacotherapy in treating refugees.
- Cross-cultural perspectives on the Impact of Events ScaleâRevised and other widely used assessment methods.
- Renewed debates over the nature of PTSD as a reaction to mass trauma.
With the world in its current state, Cross-Cultural Assessment of Psychological Trauma and PTSD is necessary reading for practitioners and academics in mental health. It is also highly relevant to those in a range of ethnomedicine, social work, and international aid and advocacy.
