A Field manual of the Ferns and Fern Allies of the United St.......2000-04-05
This is the most comprehensive book on Ferns and Fern Allies common to the United States that I have found. It gives comprehensive descriptions of over 400 species accompanied by color plates. This is an excellent text of interest ranging from the hobbyist to the graduate student.

Customer Reviews:
A must have book by a quality writer.......2007-10-02
My husband enjoy going on camping adventures, and we use all of Tom Stienstra's camping books like bibles. I have noted only one mistake on his California book, but on the whole they are useful and informative.
We plan a trip up the California coast to Oregon, then to Washington.
We plan to tent camp all the way using his books. We did it before a few years ago and it worked out great. I strongly recommend this book or any of his books to anyone who wants to have fun, cheap, exciting adventures camping!
Pacific Northwest Camping guide review.......2007-09-27
This book arrived in A-1 condition, and in a timely manner. I recommend this seller.
the book to have.......2007-06-12
If you camp this is the book to have, espcially if you tent camp and want to find all the small campgrounds. I love finding all the tent campgrounds, this is the definite book for the NW.
five stars is not enough for the work that went into thsi book.
Our Favorite Campground Guide to the Pacific Northwest!.......2006-11-02
As indicated by reviewers of earlier editions, the Moon Outdoors (previously Foghorn Outdoors) series of campground guides is not without flaws. Even so, we know of no directories which do a better job of addressing campground aesthetics than these wonderful guides. In our experience, the look and feel of a campground is often the single greatest factor influencing the quality of a camping experience . . . and the factor totally ignored by nearly all other campground guides.
There are a number of directories which rate facilities, provide directions, tell you how to make reservations and give you an idea of the cost for a night's stay in a specific campground. This series gives similar basic information and then goes beyond that. This guides from Moon Outdoors actually gives you a feel of what it is like to stay in a specific campground - a bit of a narrative description and a "scenic beauty rating" for each campground plus information about nearby recreation opportunities. We like that a lot.
Have we found instances where we liked a campground more or less than the book's author? Of course. Tastes differ and things change over time. Even so, we would rather have an admittedly subjective rating of a campground's intangibles than to have nothing to go on but a recitation of facts and figures.
Are the Moon Outdoors Guides the only ones we use? No. But they are ALWAYS the first place we turn when selecting a destination campground.
Book Description

This book was a delight to read and the color pictures
were great to look at.I did see the movie and the book juste
gave me a inside on Anne Hateway, and all of the fellow writters,
producer on what the were hopping to get and did.
After all it's a enchanted story.
Yuck!!.......2004-10-01
This Book is soooo Lame. I can't believe someone even bothered to publish it. It's ten times worse than the movie, and the movie's pretty bad. It's like they took every stupid idea that had too do with Ella Enchanted and put it in this book. Reading it was just a major waste of my time.
Perfect companion to the movie,.......2004-04-24
My daughter and I enjoyed "Ella Enchanted" starring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy so we knew we just had to get this book when it came out.
The book has lots of color pictures, behind-the-scenes info and even interviews with the main stars. Any fan of Anne Hathaway or Hugh Dancy will definitely want to get it. It is the perfect companion to the fun, romantic and sweet film. Four thumbs up from me and my daughter!
UGH.......2004-04-20
My little sister bought this, and all I have to say is that the people who wrote the story clearly did not read the book at all. The story was absolutely massacred. The scrapbook was worthless too. Do not waste your money on this peice of crap.
Ella Enchanted.......2004-04-13
I loved 'Ella Enchanted' and when the scrapbook came out, I had to get it!!!! I got it and read it, and I fell head over heels for 'Ella'. This book and scrapbook are both at #1 on my fav books list. I also got the soundtrack, and that is now my fav CD. I saw the movie too and they picked such a hottie for Prince Char[Hugh Dancy]. Am I right girls!? What drawed me to read 'Ella' was the fact that she had so much girl power, not something you see that much in the midieval stories of late, like 'Sleeping Beauty' and Disney's 'Cinderella'. This story is great and Levine is a genius (...). This book and scrapbook, movie and CD are must reads, must sees, and must listen to's. People are weird thinking to boy-cott the movie just because it's not the same as the book, I think it'll cause more 'Ella' books to be sold. That's a good thing. I also found really cool continued 'Ella' stories on www.geocities.com/eethesite.

Jan Tschichold's design breakthroughs in typography were two fold. He was the first typographer to apply the aesthetics, in his day, of the Bauhaus to ordinary, day-to-day printing. Secondly, his great flexibility of vision allowed him to relinquish those design principles of asymmetry and articulate a wider vision after his exile from Nazi Germany. The Bauhaus had a tendency, after all, to use type as an element of abstract art, and Tschichold would never be swayed from his conviction that typographical design must serve communication. He would incorporate the dash and elegance of Bauhaus form, but never sacrifice legibility for flair. Function, in his case, would always follow form. His aesthetic, however, was indelible. With his early training in lettering and calligraphy, Tschichold "... became the first to offer a coherent philosophy of design by which all typographic problems ... could be tackled in ways that were rational, suited to modern production techniques, and aesthetically satisfying."
Jan Tschichold: A Life in Typography offers both the design student and the experienced designer such enlightened summaries, placing the typographer's vision firmly in the rich cultural context of his times. In his concise biography Ruari McLean, the world's leading Tschichold scholar, offers an interpretation of the significant design innovations, with analyses of Tschichold's writings, theories and manifestos. A substantial as well as a handsome volume, enriched with annotated illustrations of Tschichold's work, and including the now famous series of film posters for Munich's Phoebus-Palast Cinema, Jan Tschichold is as satisfying to the eye as any of Tschichold's clean, lean designs.
Book Description
German type and book designer Jan Tschichold (1902Ð1974) revolutionized modern typography through his bold, asymmetrical designs and use of sanserif typography, both inspired by the work of the Bauhaus. He proclaimed his new design philosophy through a series of articles and books, including Die neue Typographie, published in Berlin in 1928. His international renown came largely as a result of his redesign of Penguin's entire series of paperback novels just after World War II. Any graphic designer practicing today owes a debt to Tschichold's innovation.?
?Jan Tschichold: A Life in Typography offers a concise biography of Tschichold, accompanied by numerous examples of his vast body of work. It serves as an introduction to Tschichold for those who are unfamiliar with his influential style, yet for the experienced designer it is an excellent collection of the wide range of his designs. ?Ruari McLean's books on graphic design include Modern Book Design (1958) and Typographers on Type (1995). He is also the translator of Tschichold's The New Typography and the author of various books on Tschichold's work.
Customer Reviews:
Two typographic icons.......2006-08-18
The late Ruary McLean has deligted the world of typography with many seminal books on the subject. "Jan Tschichold: a life in typography" is but one good example of his prodigious output. McLean uses his personal acquaintance with Tschichold to good effect in a delightful essay about this important 20th century type designer. The essay evaluates the work of this controversial figure who started as a convential designer, espoused a radical change, and then reverted to a more classical view of typography. The book contains many examples of Tschichold's work from all three stages of his development. An excellent reference.
It's great....but..........2000-10-05
First the good. "Life in Typography" is a beautifully illustrated paperback containing gorgeous, intriguing scans of pages and illustrations from the work of typographer/illustrator Jan Tschichold. Fortunately, a number of reprints in the book are reprinted actual size, to give the viewer a distinctly real vantage point into what the originals actually looked like. So unless you've got the cash to buy out-of-print books, this is by far the most sane route. And it's not too expensive either.
But the only problem I had with the book is that I wanted to learn more about the artist himself. Tschichold's bold, at times abbrasive tone comes out in his pen sketched notes on a number of reprints and in-house drafts, leading the reader to believe he was probably one obnoxious, colorful, temperamental character. Instead, "A Life in Typography" sheds little light on the 'life' of Tschichold, and focuses instead on images with little explanation.
Were there no interviews with Tschichold that could have been reprinted? A larger window into his persona would have really helped understand his persistance and drive for typographic perfection.
But of everything reprinted in the book, quite possibly the most stirring, worthy part is a four page reprint of "Composition Rules" written by Tschichold and distributed to employees of the Penguin Book company. It's forceful, blunt, and essential reading for anyone involved in typesetting. He explains in detail how to treat capitals, italics, paragraph indents and punctuation marks. His thoughts and opinions about typography leap off the page.
So if you need a quick reference of his work, or are someone who just discovered the name Tschichold, this is a must have for your design library.
Book Description
Though digital tools may have allowed designers new power and flexibility, typography remains the bedrock of good graphics, and one of the most exciting areas of experimentation. Despite the myriad collections of type design produced, no one has before attempted a thematic and critical overview of digital typography and the oft-unpublished radical works that lead to these designs. This book is extensively illustrated with the work of dozens of typographers from around the world, and illuminates the rich history of digital typography from its physical properties and production methods, through the development of typographic styles, to the full diversity of its uses in print, architecture, film, TV, and other media.

A good introduction to the century when type design exploded.......2001-01-19
Carter's book is heavily waited towards the period 1900-1960, which was in a way a golden age for type design. As ATF, Monotype and Linotype reached their ascendancy, new types were commissioned at an unprecedented rate and many of the best designs were created (or re-created) for the current generation of typesetting equipment. The advent of phototype in the 60s brought this first twentieth century golden age to an end, while PostScript opened a new period. Latter day type designers are cursorily treated courtesy of a second edition (which you're looking at here), so for that end of the spectrum you'll have to look elsewhere (the book has not yet been written), but it does at least provide a good overview of the major figures of the end of the metal type era.

Book Description
This well-written autobiography of the renowned book designer, author and typographer captures a fascinating life and a remarkable era in British publishing. McLean's compelling story begins with his birth in the Scottish lowlands, and describes his school days at Oxford, the war years as a British officer on a French submarine, and his introduction into the London publishing scene. Along the way, we meet the "movers and shakers" of Britian's post-war publishing world as he built his career.
Through McLean's eyes we are treated to a unique view of the bygone period of Great Britian's publishing history. Co-published with The British Library.

Frederic Goudy deserves to be remembered........2000-10-03
There's much more to the type of Frederic Goudy than Goudy Oldstyle, and you'd be suprised at some of the familiar typefaces that came from his hand. He created over 100 types, including what is now known as Berkely and Copperplate. Most designers are lucky if ONE of their types finds its way into common use. Goudy has at least ten. This is a facsimile of a volume that appeared in Goudy's lifetime. My only complaint is that I wish it had been reproduced on letterpress -- printed pages produced by modern means do not carry the same authority, or produce the characteristic relief of the old printing methods. Nonetheless, we are fortunate to have it available.

A thoughtful refelction on the work of Frederic Goudy........2000-10-03
Bruckner's work is appreciative and critical -- sometimes too critical -- of a man who produced more type than anyone except Morris Benton. His account of Goudy's life and work is exhaustively researched and hightly opinionated, yet this is a marvelously entertaining book to read. It's also well-designed, as a series titled "Masters of American Design" should be. He gives many examples of Goudy's own typography, and reprints in full the examples of his type designs in "A Half-Century of Type Design and Typography." Thus far, this is the only book on Frederic Goudy. By all means, contact the publisher and demand a reprint.

Book Description
The design of books today we enjoy today was fundamentally influenced by a handful of preeminent designers who were active during the 20th century. This book provides an entertaining and informative overview of eleven key designers - D.B. Updike, Jan Tschichold, Bruce Rogers, Stanley Morrson, Hermann Zapf, Jan Van Krimpen, Francis Meynell, Gotthard de Beauclair, Max Caflish, Joseph Blumenthal, and Giovanni Mardersteig - and explores their influence on one another. The lively text provides biographical overviews and information about the designer's work, as well as an assessment of the elements that they created that have gone into producing what we now see as a "well-designed book." There are over 110 pages of visually stunning examples of their work featured in this book. A must have book for any book designer and book lovers alike!
