      5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY!.......2007-01-22

I have purchased several raw food "cook" books recently, as my family and I are transitioning to a raw diet. This is one of my very favorites. There is a HUGE variety of recipes and some great tips. I also love that there is a resource guide in the back of the book. This resource is a great asset, seeing as raw food is still so rare in the US. This book gives my family and I a great variety of wonderful new foods to try! I highly recommend this book for any beginning raw fooders.

2 out of 5 stars I hate to say it but..........2006-10-29

This book has a number of errors on its recipes. Like a recipe for pesto that calls for a 1/4 cup of sea salt when there is no way any human could eat it that salty. Or How about a recipe for raw sausage that doesn't even mention a dehydrator, when we made it the final product was a dense liquid? Try forming that into a patty??! This is a book compiled of the recipes of a number of people. Each recipe has credits for the source. Some of the recipes are very good, and have even become staples around my house. Some seem as if they came off the top of someones head and never were even tried. It is very frustrating to go out and buy groceries for a special recipe only to find them all wasted because the recipe doesn't even work. I mean not even close. This is a small percentage of the recipes in this book, but it still sucks. If you are on a raw food diet, it's not like you can just say "oh well" and head out for pizza! Send a message and buy a more researched and reliable book.

      3 out of 5 stars 50 Recipes, One Month.......2006-01-26

I prepared and ate food from this book only for one month and was for the most part satisfied. Some of the 50 recipes I tried were redundant and others ranged from inedible to fantastic. I didn't become emaciated, lost maybe 6 pounds which is fine, because I'm a little overweight. I also wasn't hungry and my cravings for cooked food minimal. This experiment has certainly led me to incorporate more raw foods into my diet. Anything that calls for honey can easily be substituted with agave nectar. You don't need to have all the top-notch equipment listed, I used a cheap food processor, ordinary blender and a used Ronco dehydrator I got for free. Admittedly, most of this is very labour intensive.
Karyn's Tomato and Pea Salad (63)- Crunch, light and good. I would use less Bragg's.
      Lentil Salad (63)- Pretty good.
Quinoa Tabouli (68)- Great in small quantities because the flavour is so potent.
I Can't Believe It's Not Waldorf Salad (79)- Quite good, but not spectacular.
Butternut Squash Soup (95)- Pretty good, but bland. I used ½ the amount of water for desired consistency.
Carrot/Orange/Pumpkin Soup (95)- Good, I used fresh onion and garlic instead of powdered. The recipe didn't include a liquid, so I added two cups of water.
Ants in a Canoe (110)- Almost as good as Ants on a Log.
Ants on a Log (110)- A person could easily live off of this!
Mesquite Melts (124)- Absolutely terrible. The texture is very unpleasant.
Spring Rolls (131)- Good, can be almost anything wrapped in anything.
Corn Torillas (169)- very good, they've got some kick. Nothing like tortillas though.
Jameth and Kim's Original Flax Crackers (168)- Good, easy and flexible.
Sweet Golden Crackers (176)- Not so good, but edible.
Barbecue Chips (177)-Okay, just don't add too much cayenne and skip the beat.
Almond Milk (182)-Tied with hazelnut for the best milk I ever had.
Almost, Hazel, or Sunflower Milk (184)- Can be done with pretty much any nut or seed. I used soy and added maple syrup and vanilla. Strain it in a cheesecloth.
Quickest Tahini Milk (186)- So, so terrible.
Banana Bites (193)- Good, but no very exciting.
Granola/Grawnola (194)- Made a combination of these two recipes and it is wonderful, takes a long time though, so make a lot.
Spiced Strawberry Granola Crunch (197)- Very tasty, would be better with less allspice because it's pretty overpowering.
Viktoras' Secret Raw Horamola (198)- Terribly bland.
Italian Rawsage (202)- Very very filling and pretty good.
Italian Style Zucchini Pasta Pesto (202)- NEVER put 1/4 cup of salt, I put 1/8 and it was still not edible.
Mock Spaghetti (205)- Okay, but boring.
Avocado Burritos (208)- Very boring and way too many tomatoes.
Chinese Wild Rice with Tender Vegetables (217)- Good but I would use less ginger.
Chow Mein Memory (218)- Wonderful! I would add more tamari.
Curried Kofka Ball in Cashew Tomatoes Curry Sauce (219)- One of the best recipes in the book, especially the sauce. I upped the spices a lot.
Easy Sushi (221)- Fast, easy, good and flexible.
Roast Tofu with Satay Sauce (223)- Good and simple. Don't overhydrate mushrooms. I added ½ can of coconut milk, some garlic and some chile pepper to the sauce.
Falafels (220)-SUPER! Just as good or better than traditional falafels.
Live Gardenburgers (232)- Delicious. Next time I will add garlic.
Neat Balls (234)-Really good, but again, better with garlic.
Pecan Almond Stuffed Mushrooms (237)- Pretty Bland so spice at will. Cut pate recipe in half or you will run out of mushrooms.
Spinach and Potato Latkes (241)- Just awful. I like spinach, but this has a fishy taste.
Sun Garden Burgers (242)- Really good, mild flavour. Easy and fast, makes 14 large patties.
Thai Crane's Nest in Coconut Curry (244)-Tastes pretty ok, but I was unable to form nests because they fell apart.
What's for Dinner Loaf (247)- Very good! I made them into patties and dehydrated until crisp on the outside.
Carrot and Tomato Spread (250)- Okay, but bland.
Miso Mayo (254)- Good, but a very strong miso flavour.
White Sauce/ Salad Dressing (270)- Not more than ok.
      Guacamole (274)- Pretty great.
Pine Nut Sour Cream (276)- Good Base for any dip.
Ranch Dip or Dressing (276)- Easy, fast and super yummy.
Raw Hummus (277)-Pretty good, not spectacular.
Salsa Fresca (278)- Good and fresh tasting.
Tahitian Almond Dipping Sauce (278)- Really, really wonderful.
Raw Candy (295)- Good, but not at all like chocolate as the book would suggest.
Whip the Mister (327)- Yum! Mix with 50% frozen almond milk.

      5 out of 5 stars Nancy.......2005-12-09

I loved this book!!!! The recipes are exciting and different from the other raw books I have and I look forward to trying them out.
I like the fact that you get a variety of recipes from a variety of 'chefs' and that they range from simple to gourmet.
This book is a must for the raw-foodist's collection of 'uncook' books.

2 out of 5 stars Only if you don't have access to the internet.......2005-09-19

This book was actually the worst and the best that I've gotten so far. It's divided into three sections. The first is a sort of guide to raw. I really liked this section because it had an in depth explanation of how to sprout things. There was also a good dehydration chart and a wonderful explanation of the various appliances needed. I didn't like the juicing overkill...but that's personal. That said, all of this info can be found on the web. The second part is full of recipes. They are, for the most part, awful. The ingredient lists are a mile long and the prep and lead times are beyond hellish. The last part wasn't needed. Anyone with access to the internet could find this info.

              Book Description

Technology is moving into every area of our jobs and lives. It can do our boring work and let us live like kings, or leave us destitute and dominated. By moving up to metamind, we can come out on top. This book helps cope with problems that are affecting people's jobs and lives: offshoring, automation, technogreed, media control, and social backlash.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Starts well but takes a 90 degree turn liberal.......2005-04-20

The start of the book was exactly why I bought it - to read about the impact of automation on jobs. I expected the whole book to be on topic but soon after the first part of the book the author takes a 90 degree turn to preach his liberal philosophy. He brings up original ideas such as how to improve our minds which I enjoyed but the book on the whole was not very close to the topic the book was sold on which was technology's impact on jobs.

He particularly is down on big business which he seemingly thinks is always bad even evil. Big business has done many good things for everyone and wouldn't exist after all unless people are buying their services.

If you want some different. well thought out ideas on how to structure society then I would recommend this book. If you want an entire book on technology's impact on jobs then I would not.
If you are a conservative, think twice before getting this book because it is irritatingly one-sided, narrow minded and naive on how the world really works.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Subject , decent book.......2004-04-08

Increased automation and people being replaced by machines is not a new concept. But this book is the the first time I have seen an author explain a framework of overcoming the negative aspects of living in an automated world, which attracted me to it. There were some editing mistakes, which makes it seemed kind of rushed, and it goes over a broad range of concepts for a such short book. Overall I thought it was ok, but it leaves the reader wanting more in depth info.

5 out of 5 stars Saving the Human Element.......2004-02-25

This book has been written on a foundation of passion, commitment, and authenticity. Mr. Samson is truly dedicated to the principles of the issues and solutions he has identified in this work.

He has accurately described the path of the present condition of technology replacing not only human labor but also the human mind and eventually the spirit. His examples of the transformation and loss of jobs is a lesson in history we have forgotten or fail to recognize. More importantly, his book is call for alarm, for history is repeating itself with a much greater consequence.

This book is a must read for those of us who feel that our technocratized society has forgotten about the human element. ItÕs not only about efficiency and productivity, but also about meaning, purpose, and quality of life. Mr. Samson enlightens us on how and why we are slowly being replaced by intelligent machines and offers alternatives which can facilitate the benefits of both technology and the human mind. I highly recommend this book.

              5 out of 5 stars Provocative & Challenging.......2004-02-20

This is the most provocative and challenging book I have ever read about where our nation is headed with respect to one
of the essential underpinnings of our economy and society; namely, decent jobs. Right now the shortage of jobs in the U.S. has pointed the finger to the off-shoring of jobs to countries with cheap labor. This book explains why, as serious as off-shoring is, "off-peopling" of jobs to robots will very soon be an even greater and more difficult problem to solve. The author explains in a very readable style, with clearly presented reasoning, backed by easily understood statistics, why the the threat of robots is no longer science fiction. He outlines ways that leaders in government, business, labor and education should be jointly working to avert the world-wide disruption of our economy and society which is already underway. We must develop and train people to fill millions of "human edge" jobs where, because humans are alive and robots are not, humans can come out on top of machines, even those with artificial intelligence -- not struggle in their wake. Then many people, not just a relatively few techies, can hold not only decent jobs but fulfilling ones. You have to read this book to understand how this is possible...and then join the crusade to make it happen.

              Book Description

Infuriated by the German sinking of the liner Lusitania, the author (an American citizen) travels to England and enlists in the Royal Fusiliers, prior to America's entry into the war. This is a book about his "experiences in the language of Tommy sitting on the fire step of a front-line trench on t he Western Front-just as he would tell his mate next him what was happening at a different part of the line." He was in the front line trench of the Western Front.

It was the biggest bestseller of the war, selling a million hardcover copies. The best part may be its appendix, "Tommy's Dictionary of the Trenches," which is a dictionary of slang and other terms used by British soldiers.

A classic at the time by an American who fought in the British Army. Books of this sort were published as propaganda to tilt American public opinion towards the Allied cause.

If one wants an interesting look at the British Army in France during the Early part of WW I with an American Witness / Soldier twist. You might want to consider this book. While its has a fair amount of propaganda, it has a lot of good details that overcome it.

3 out of 5 stars Over The Top: A Bottom Up View.......2002-06-24

When the Great War broke out in Europe in 1914, most Americans were convinced that the fighting had nothing to do with the United States. There were precious few with the foresight to demand that America enter the war on the side of the allies. Arthur Guy Empey wrote OVER THE TOP to show his countrymen that the battle that the allies were fighting was our battle as well. His book, which reads like a novel, is more of a personal narrative in which he describes his volunteering to join the British Army and fight 'over there.' Much of his book deals with the daily dreariness of the horrors of trench warfare. Empey skillfully draws a composite picture of the average Brit soldier, whom he nicknames Tommy. His book is at once brutal, comic, and mundane--much like trench warfare had to be. By the end, the reader becomes convinced with the justness of the British cause, which true enough and soon enough, became the American cause. A very fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Mud, mud, and more mud..........2001-10-22

I was loaned a copy of this book a few years ago by a co-worker who is almost as nuts about military and industrial history as I am. Though his reason for having me read was for the human aspect, not the technical.

Now, I have read many personal accounts of soldiers and sailors in wartime, from the American Revolution, the War Between the States through Vietnam, Beirut, and the Gulf War, some well written, some just interesting, and some frightening.

This book is all of those. It is well written, informative, and scary. Not having ever been exposed to hostile conditions, I cannot directly relate to what the author shares, but I am definately deeply affected by the emotion and imagery portrayed therin.

The Mr. Empey joined the Royal Army while he was still a recruiting Sergeant in the NY National Guard in 1915. Unable to convince Americans that we were destined to fight in the European War raging overseas and needed trained, disciplined and motivated troops, he did the next best thing by going "over there" himself.

After completing his training then being assigned to a replacement company in France his real adventures began.

The trenches of the western front had been in place for some time when he arrived and they were replacing the casualties of
stagnated lines. Regular artillery barages, probing raids, snipers, dysentary, trench foot, disease and madness all took there toll.

Mr. Empey tells the story from a persanal point of view sharing his insights and observations. You almost feel icky from the cold, oozing clay, and catch a chill from being wet all the time as though you were there in the mud with him.

I was impressed with his inclusion of all the activities in the field. He even describes the primitive sanitary conditions at the rear while on rotation from the front. In spite of the prescence of the International Red Cross, conditions at the front (and in the rear) were atrocious. many casuaties were from the inadequate sanitation... and not from enemy fire.

I applaud Mr. Empey for publishing this book when he did, for even after being invalided out of the British Army, he was still thinking of the naive American Boys who would follow soon in 1917. He tried to share his experiences so that others would benefit.

I do not know how well recieved this book was with Mr. Empey's contemporaries, or how well the book sold, but I think this book should be recommended reading for all military personnel...

This is a very good read for anyone with the strength to stomach it.

5 out of 5 stars Over The Top.......2001-06-01

This book is fast reading because it's so hard to put down. It was written when America's entrance to the Great War was imminent, though uncommitted. Moreover, it was written by an American that joined up with the British forces via Canada. The author had vast combat experiences as an infantryman, machine gunner, bomb thrower, and artillery observer. It's hard to imagine that the author would have survived the War if it wasn't for a wounding that sent him to 'blighty' for good. Empey's writings are about daily life within the Western trenchs; the obvious, the unthinkable, and the overlooked. Further, Empey's writing style is fluid and crisp making the work much more than a diary or a guidebook. Definately a fine piece of literature to hold to and not "lend to a friend".

4 out of 5 stars Over the Top.......2001-04-17

I read this book over ten years ago and it had a place of honor in my library until it disappeared while moving. If one wants to get a 1st hand and what I feel is a fairly accurate view of what soldiering must of been like , this is the one to read about War One ("The War to end all Wars") and the British Army as seen thru American eyes. (Example - How the mess kits were cleaned by using mud.) I can also state that the glossary of terms used by Tommy Atkins was both amusing and informative. Tommy by the way was a very cynical and humorous sort of fellow. While this book is not as good as Robert Graves "Goodbye to all that". Which also is part of my library. On the other hand, Graves could not not write about the others ranks point of view since he was always a Commissioned Officer in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. All in all though a very good read and well worth the time if this period of time is your forte.

2 out of 5 stars Not Mapped Out.......2005-12-26

The book is a self-described study in how WWI was fought in each major battle. It certainly is a detailed chronicle, although unevenly written and, despite the author's best attempts, anglo-centric. Another limitation: all the battles described are from the Western Front. But what makes this book frustrating is the paucity of maps. There are less than a dozen crude maps making it impossible to follow most of the troop movements described in the text, unless you bring your own.

3 out of 5 stars The Great Battles of WWI.......2003-12-16

In this book, Michael Marix Evans provides an outline of the great and horrible battles of the First World War. The reader is confronted with the terror of the Somme, Paschendale and the Menin Road in France and Gallipoli in Turkey. In each case, tens of thousands of lives were sacrificed to gain, in some cases, only a few extra metres of territory. Such is the insanity of war.

Unfortunately, Marix Evans is unable to convey the magnitude of events to the reader. I found myself lost in the description of the divisions and brigaes without gaining an appreciation of what was actually happening.

In sum, the book was a disappointment. Other works, particularly those by Martin Gilbert and Robert K Massie, offer better interpretations.
