Book Description

From space, Africa is a shattered land, textured by burning sands, seas of grass, and steaming forests. It is scarred by mountains and bejeweled by great lakes and rivers. Raw and beautiful, this ancient continent is alive with the greatest collection of wildlife on Earth. Wild Africa takes the reader into the heart of this fabulous landscape, introducing every habitat and revealing how the resident wildlife has adapted to thrive in its unique natural environment. Chapter topics include: The ancient heart (jungle); Islands of creation (mountains); Endless place (savannah); Sweet waters, bitter cauldrons (rivers and lakes); Sands of time (coasts); and Beautiful furnaces (deserts). The book will show how a once-stable continent has been fragmented into these six spectacular realms, and how this process has catalyzed the evolution of some remarkable animals and plants in each one. In the savannah, carnivorous ants consume as much meat as lions, and a flock of quelea can devastate thousands of acres overnight. In the jungle, where light rarely penetrates the leaf canopy, there are diminutive forms of familiar animals -- pygmy chimpanzees, forest elephants, and dwarf hippos. Meanwhile, in the extreme conditions of the desert, plants exist that have lived for thousands of years. Through amazing images and lively, authoritative text, Wild Africa immerses the reader in the natural history of this spectacular continent.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2007-02-07

My 6th grade son and I spent about an hour on the couch perusing this book. It is so full of wonderful nature photography that it is worth the price for that alone. But, the photography lured us into learning more about the many habitats in Africa.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Guide To Atlanta.......2006-08-23

Frommer's guides are generally quite well researched, if a bit visually dull: the book is of the old school, and has no photos or catchy graphics, but does have good and detailed text about Atlanta. All areas of city life are well documented, and while everyone has personal lists of what are or are not significant enough for inclusion, the Frommer's staff generally strikes a good balance for most travelers, especially first time visitors.

I lived in Atlanta many years ago, and while a lot has changed, the attractions (like the Margaret Mitchell House and the World of Coca-Cola) and restaurants (like the wonderful Atlanta Seafood Market, which has a 65 foot tall copper fish weighing 50 tons standing on it's tail out front, making it quite hard to miss) that I have personally been to are well covered and accurately reported, giving me confidence in the rest of the book's contents.

I found the section on shopping to be sparsely detailed, and occasionally found the organization a bit difficult, especially in the restaurant section where restaurants are alternately organized alphabetically, by type of cuisine, or by general geographic region (which will be very foreign to newcomers.) I found the guide to hotels excellent, even though I am not a fan of the way the staff divided Atlanta into regions. I would have also enjoyed a few glossy inserts of photos like most other guides have to help judge if an attraction is something I am interested in or not. Those are personal preferences, though, and overall I find the guide quite utilitarian.

I picked this guide up for a business trip to Atlanta, and unfortunately, didn't get to see nearly as much as I wanted. You can bet, though, that the next time I come through Atlanta with time on my hands, I will bring the Frommer's guide with me.

4 out of 5 stars Capital of the New South.......2006-02-11

These guide books by Frommer are always well researched and this one is no exception. Atlanta is covered from top to bottem and the book does a commendable job of getting the feel for this sophisicated city. Most of the top sites in Atlanta are in a relatively small area and this book covers them thoroughly. If you are going to visit Atlanta for the first time or have not been to the city in a while then I highly recommend this book to you, there is much to see and this book will let you get the party started right.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good intentions, poor execution.......2001-03-12

I hate to trash any book, especially one about Atlanta, but this one just did not do what it should have. If you overlook the obvious mistakes (the Civil War did not begin in 1851) and the short descriptions there are still problems that make the book difficult to use. First, it is cumbersome. The publisher should have made it slightly narrower so that it could fit in my back pocket. Its not off by much, but carrying it in my jacket was a pain and I dropped it twice. Second, the maps are useless, unless you intend to stay in the one area being talked about at the time. I wanted to see the relationship between the CNN Center and Peachtree Center MARTA station so I could avoid having to walk to the GWCC/Georgia Dome/Omni station and changing at Five Point. Can't do it with this book cause the maps don't show it. I dont think Ebeneezer Baptist Church is a major attraction and I don't consider either Wren's Nest or Zoo Atlanta attractions for kids. So if you are looking for attractions and only check out the stuff listed for adults, you will miss two of Atlanta's best and go to one that's so-so.

Where does this book hit its mark? Author Mary Lee does a pretty good job with her best places to....

Laster year my social studies teacher had asked every student to do a independent report about an important historic event which influenced worldwide resounding and pointed on an eternal topic that all human being are trying to accomplished. Therefore I chose the darkest day in China's democracy history, June 4th,1989----The day democracy died. What was happened in that day was too much to tell,my parents, and their friends, who were the witnesses of the process of the whole event were unable to give me a satisfied timeline or table.Meanwhile,I need more materials in English,I seldom found good reference books assisted my thoughts exactly.Once,I saw this book in a small book store,an used book, provided me all the informations I hoped to get!Afterward I easily got my works done,I was got shock when I first time read those exclusive news by Western reporters, the book presents me a bloody massacre,it broken my heart, truethfully,I felt sorry for the Goverment's wrong decision.A scene of killing constantly consisted in my head.I cannot do nothing about a coutry's past,present,future.....But what I should do and vice versa.

From the supplier: Some people are petitioning China to change its stance on the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre and to treat dissidents with more tolerance. The government's failure to admit it was wrong will threaten China's stability. China is likely to become a democratic nation in the future.

                                    Book Description

The inspiration behind Bloom Book was the much-admired Bloom magazine founded in 1998 in Paris by Li Edelkoort to explore the fusion of plants and fashion. The concept behind both the magazine and the book puts the 'culture' into 'horticulture'. Flowers, vegetables and trees are an endless source of inspiration for design, fashion, cosmetics and cuisine, which in turn open new perspectives for our vision of the world of plants, more creative today than ever before.

From the symbolism of flowers to the seasonal cycles of death and rebirth, from homeopathic beauty treatments to edible blossoms, the plant kingdom is a starting point for much of human experience. Bloom explores these issues in a quest for a new understanding of nature: a return to our roots, allying the sap of life and the zest of human creativity to create a true Art Noveau.
