Oversized, with lifelike illustrations that are so much more appealing (and detailed) than photos. Paper is that attractive coated semi-matte that stays bright and clean. Highly recommended.

            Book Description

The dictionary is a compilation of clear, concise and informative definitions of the characteristic vocabulary commonly encountered and used by herpetologists when discussing, reading, or writing about reptiles and amphibians. It is intended for all those who have an interest in these animals, from the amateur hobbyist who may find himself faced with what can be a rather intimidating scientific term or technical expression, to the trained zoologist who may sometimes have doubts over the exact meaning of a particular term. It will, it is hoped, not only be a useful source of reference to all who are either actively or passively involved in some aspects of herpetology whether they be keepers, curators, breeders, researchers, teachers or students, but an interesting read as well.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians.......2005-03-05

A truly comprehensive coverage of the entire group of reptiles and amphibians - the turtles, lizards, snakes, salamanders, frogs and their allies - that any hobbyist or weekend naturalist can turn to for answers to her or his questions about both common herps and the rarely seen species. The author uses an interesting narrative style to describe the lives and characters of hundreds of species from North America and around the world. Although Breen, a herpetologist of long standing, emphasizes the more familiar species likely to be found in pet shops or collected by the average enthusiast, many obscure and rare groups are also discussed in detail.
The almost 600 photos provide a gallery such as is seldom seen in a book for the average naturalist, picturing everything from common snakes found in your back yard to seldom seen Australian lizards and Africal frogs.

Breen doesn't just tell you about reptiles and amphibians, he also tells you how to keep them successfully in captivity and get the most out of observing them in nature. Housing, maintenance, feeding and foods are discussed in detail, and there are also hints on purchasing your pet or collecting it.
If you are in the market for a single good volume covering the entire range of reptiles and amphibians, this Encyclopedia is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Praise from a Penn student.......2004-05-24

I recently moved to Philly last year to go to school at Penn, and I just picked up this guide on a whim. Boy am I glad I did! The reviews of the places I already knew were spot on, but more importantly, it tipped me off to some great places I had no idea existed. I found the reviews honest, concise, candid and often tremdously funny. And they thankfully suceeded to help me find a decent hotel for my mother to stay in when she came to visit. You can't bet that, nor can you beat the restaurant recommendations, which don't pull any punches.

One nice thing about the guide -- one of the things I noticed when I was trying to figure out which guide to Philly to buy, is that this Lonely Planet book covers neighborhoods like South Philly, Manayunk and Northern Liberites clearly, in detail, and with maps. As far as I could tell, no other guide to Philadelphia does this. Instead, they mostly deal with Center City. So if you want something that thoroughly covers the city, this is it.

                  Book Description

Some people think that North America¹s history began when Columbus sailed over in 1492. The first volume in the tongue-in-cheek, no-holds-barred history series says that estimate¹s a bit off, by about 250 million years! With tons of facts, lots of laughs, and plenty of funky illustrations, author Liz Levy takes readers on a roller coaster ride through the age of the dinosaurs, the great ice ages, and, finally, to the appearance of the first humans.

Terry Deary writes the original Horrible Histories. They're interesting, witty, and even educational. Kids and adults alike read them for fun! Read them.

Elizabeth Levy's "American Horrible Histories", however, are dull, unfunny, and while they are "educational", I can't see anyone reading them for fun. It reads like a text book.

This books are wonderful. They make learning history fun and cool. It combines jokes, historical facts and funny information in a great easy-to-read package. My 4th grader loves the whole series. Both reluctant readers and history lovers will enjoy the breezy way history is told in these books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders and even middle school students. Great as gifts or for a classroom. Too bad all history books aren't this fun!

I think that my book was funnier than anything else. I mean it's about history and all but it was even funnier. It makes you not want to stop because you want to see what's next. I think that the autor wants it so you learn and have fun at the same time. Some other books were all talking and no fun if you know what I mean. There's a little story teller on every page; he tells jokes about the things you've just read. I liked this book and I hope you do to thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Who Are You Calling A Woolly Mammoth?.......2002-01-31

This book teaches you about Prehistoric times and how creatures survived. The book also has some humor. There is almost a comic on every page, and most of them are funny. It's a way to learn and have fun at the same time. Inconclusion, I write this because it's a great book to learn from and get a few laughs along with it.

                        Book Description

The Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, and Teutonic Knights frequently appear in the French, German, and English epic and romance literature of the Middle Ages. Love, War, and the Grail examines the religious roles of the military orders, such as caring for the sick, their warrior role of fighting Muslims, and the role of Templars in the Grail romances. It traces how these roles developed over time and looks at the role of these military religious orders in fiction of the Middle Ages. Nicholson's analysis of the military orders in medieval fictional literature is of interest both to historians and to literary specialists. This is the first in-depth study to consider the subject throughout the medieval period.

                            Book Description

Pergamon was an ancient royal capital in what is now Turkey. To proclaim the city's importance, its Hellenistic kings built a Great Altar--a massive stone podium about one hundred feet long and thirty-five feet high. The story of Telephos, the mythical son of Herakles and the Greek princess Auge, whose lineage the kings wanted to claim for themselves, surrounded the sacrificial altar. These two volumes of essays by classicists and art historians were compiled to accompany an exhibition of the Telephos frieze at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Volume one treats the scholarly efforts to interpret correctly the fragments of the frieze, since its discovery by German archaeologists in the late nineteenth century. Color photographs illustrate twelve marble panels from the frieze, which the contributors treat as the first known instance of continuous narrative in sculpture. Volume two provides essential information for Hellenistic scholars, as well as conservators. It presents the latest research in English on the frieze, with detailed discussions of the art, architecture, and coinage of Pergamon, the dating and significance of the frieze, and its restoration history. Also included are over two hundred detailed black-and-white drawings and photographs, a foldout topographical plan of the site, a scale model of the Pergamon Altar, and a stunning foldout drawing of the Telephos frieze itself.
