5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos.......2000-10-25

We received "Sand to Sea" as a gift when our children were toddlers. From the earliest age they loved the photos. As they got older they asked us to read the text as well. The book begins on the shore, moves to the tide-pools, out to the coral reefs and beyond into the ocean, introducing animals from each habitat. The text is basic but well-written and we enjoyed learning the Hawaiian names of many creatures, including the 12-syllable name for one fish! There are extraordinary color photos on each page. My boys especially loved the photos showing children snorkeling among reef-fish and exploring the marine world. "Sand to Sea" is an excellent introduction to Pacific marine life and we highly recommend it for children, ages 2-10.

    Book Description

A Practitioner's Guide to Freshwater Biodiversity Conservation brings together knowledge and experience from conservation practitioners and experts around the world to help readers understand the global challenge of conserving biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems. More importantly, it offers specific strategies and suggestions for managers to use in establishing new conservation initiatives or improving the effectiveness of existing initiatives.

The book: offers an understanding of fundamental issues by explaining how ecosystems are structured and how they support biodiversity; provides specific information and approaches for identifying areas most in need of protection; examines promising strategies that can help reduce biodiversity loss; and describes design considerations and methods for measuring success within an adaptive management framework.

The book draws on experience and knowledge gained during a five-year project of The Nature Conservancy known as the Freshwater Initiative, which brought together a range of practitioners to create a learning laboratory for testing ideas, approaches, tools, strategies, and methods.

For professionals involved with land or water management-including state and federal agency staff, scientists and researchers working with conservation organizations, students and faculty involved with freshwater issues or biodiversity conservation, and policymakers concerned with environmental issues-the book represents an important new source of information, ideas, and approaches.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Guide for any Nature Enthusiast Visiting the Kenai Peninsula.......2007-09-22

I just got back from my annual trip to Alaska where I found a copy of this guide. It is a great resource at a great price. Anyone planning a wildlife, or nature hiking vacation to the Kenai should look at getting a copy.

I have found most of these places in the last 10 years of travel, but there were some that are now on my "must see next time" list. It's not comprehensive, but it gives more than enough options to productively fill any trip from three days to 6 weeks. Locations range from the Sea Life Center to full day hikes to driving routes. All habitats on the Peninsula are covered (and all Alaskan habitats except Arctic Tundra can be found on the Kenai.) So it can lead you to all Alaskan wildlife except for Musk Ox and Polar Bears.

Nicely laid out, good descriptions, insightful tips, well illustrated, good removeable fold out map provided. Only slightly bad thing, there is no index of target species versus locations, so you need to read through descriptions to find locations for specific species. All in all, a great value and resource for the visiting naturalist.

5 out of 5 stars Great Viewing .......2007-08-19

I had friends visit the Kenai Peninsula for two weeks in July. We used this guide to find 130 bird species and all the major mammals - marine and land. It is cheap, well done, and full of information. My friends took it home as a remainder of why they love Alaska.

                  2 out of 5 stars Belarus, huh?.......2006-10-15

What to say about Belarus? Well, we spent the day the White Russkis commemmorate the end of WWII there, so I've seen it in all of its "grandeur". Not much to recommend it, go and see Belarus if you missed out on the post WWII East European dictatorships, because Belarus is the last of its kind. A genuine personality cult around the president runs politics, and you can get a feel for what it was like in 1970's E. Europe. Guess what- you will not like it. Take some pics of Minsk & move on to Moscow. And if you can find a decent hotel in Minsk, you've done better than my wife and I did.

                  3 out of 5 stars Don't be paranoid!.......2006-10-04

There is a wealth of information in this book but some of the information is way off. For example the restaurant Lechaim is said to be "excellent" and the cooking is "served in hearty portions". I got a small portion of fish, two soups and salad for an outrageous price of $50. LP warns that prices change but the book is only a few months old. Also the authors are overly sensitive about fitting in by suggesting that you use a plastic bag like the locals instead of a backpack to carry your things. First of all what is wrong with looking like a foreigner? Are they suggesting that Russians don't like foreigners? Anyway many locals use back packs. I also didn't get stopped by police outside the Moscow railway station. The book sanctions some level of paranoia possibly to protect themselves. Maps are accurate and so are many of the museum schedules. I would suggest trying some of the restaurants not mentioned in the book. You can find some good food that way.

                  3 out of 5 stars Big Russia.......2005-08-19

The only problem with this book is that if you're planning to travel just to an area of Russia, you won't need as much information of others. Russia is huge so the place you're travelling to, probably just will have a couple of paragraphs....

4 out of 5 stars A Guide for the 17,000,000 square kilometers of Russia.......2004-01-06

So you have already seen the present (Moscow) and former (St. Petersburg) capital, and now you would like to see the "real Russia", or you have an airplane conference to attend in Kazan, or you have adopted a child from Murmansk, or you are meeting a prospective bride from Magadan (don't laugh--whenever I answer questions from people who are traveling to regions outside of Moscow/St. Petersburg, 80% are going for adoption or marriage!). There are almost no current guidebooks to regions such as Perm, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Volgograd, Crimea, Minsk, and the Far East. The 'Lonely Planet Russia and Ukraine' has the largest area coverage of any guide currently published in English.

It is also ideal for those taking a river cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The coverage of the famed Trans-Siberian route is ok, although I think the 'Trans-Siberian Handbook' and 'Siberian Bam Guide : Rail, Rivers & Road' do a better job for those particular regions.

The Moscow/St. Petersburg sections are ok as well, although anyone spending more than a few days in each of those cities should look into guides that cover only those cities.

Restaurant, hotel and travel information are good, although could use more details. The history sections are adequate considering the scope of the book. Also, the twice-yearly updates at Lonely Planet's web site, although lacking in breadth and depth, provide some more timely information than what appears in the book.

                  Book Description

In an ancient forest near their home, Ida and Sammy picked wild berries for breakfast and wild mushrooms for soup. But a terrible war was being waged throughout their land.

Ida and Sammy and baby Ruthie were in great danger.

In 1921, the children's mother and father decided they all must flee. Despite the risks of travel, they knew that their best hope for a new life lay far away in America.

This intensely personal yet universal story tells vividly of the losses suffered and hopes that triumphed. With great variety, the pictures reflect a full range of changing emotions. Accurate in every detail, they portray the times in a way that gives readers the unforgettable sense of being present during the struggle, and witnessing one family's enduring spirit.

4 out of 5 stars Why they fled.......2002-09-03

Children asking why their parents and grandparents fled the old country can find a fine example in this beautifully illustrated 30-page true story, which blends the blessings of life in Sochocin, Poland with its horrors.

The author's grandfather Abba (Hebrew for 'father') Goodstein was famous for acting and singing, could perform wild Russian dances, jumping high in the air and touching his toes to his fingertips. He had legendary strength and was so smart he could add columns of large numbers in his head in seconds flat. His wife Pearl played the mandolin. She could draw and sew lacy butterflies and birds in swirling plumes, and designed fancy buttons from seashells in the family's tiny button factory. At their restaurant--whose menu featured mushroom, herb and barley soup, homemade noodles and fresh bread--the family often also offered plays late at night.

Their village was set in a fern-filled forest near a river clear as glass. Pink-legged white storks nested atop the chimneys and geese, goats and wildflowers danced beside the winding country roads.

But when the Goodsteins' children Ida, Sammy and Ruthie were respectively four, three and one, war and hatred forced them to leave their home forever. As World War I raged, Abba stood outside his restaurant one day and was surrounded by Cossacks who pointed rifles at his chest. He fearlessly began singing a Cossack marching song in his brilliant strong voice. The soldiers left him, laughing and singing, too. Once, three soldiers stopped Pearl's father as they rode in their family cart, threatening to cut off the beard which Jewish law required him to wear. Abba knocked the soldier out and the other two fled.

An honest rabbi was killed one afternoon for wiping his forehead in an open window: He was shot as a spy trying to send signals to the enemy. While they sheltered the family from the shooting, family "friends" gave all the Goodsteins' things away, explaining afterwards that the Jews were going to be killed anyway.

Abba Goodstein wrote to his sister Yitta who had moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1907. Another 18 pages of true-life adventures follow the family's escape in August 1921. I won't spoil the exciting details, but the story is perfect for independent readers 9-and-up, or makes a fine read-aloud. Alyssa A. Lappen

From accordion pleats--"fine, narrow, regular pleating created by sewing or pressing minute DARTS into the fabric of dresses and skirts"--to the Wonderbra--"see BRASSIERE"--and beyond, this dictionary is a reference book for the fashion-forward crowd. In hundreds of concise and informative entries, the universe of fashion from the mid-18th century through the late 1990s is fully documented. More than 300 illustrations (many of them color) offer readers the opportunity to look at designs that are better seen than described: designer Jeanne Lanvin's sketches, the bodystocking, Elsa Peretti's heart-shaped pendants, a 1920s permanent wave, a Fortuny dress. In all, this is a solid reference for readers interested in the history of fashion.

4 out of 5 stars good, quick reference.......2000-12-21

A handy book when you need to know the difference between jacquard and damask, for example, though I wish there were more pictures for visual reference. Succinct definitions and coverage of major fashion and design terms. All in all, a good addition to anyone's collection of fashion reference books.

3 out of 5 stars My first book about fashion.......2000-07-09

I recently became interested in fashion, and I think that this was a good book to start me off with. It was fairly informative, but not very detailed. Also, there weren't many pictures of the various designs/designers that were mentioned. I think this is a good book for beginners, but perhaps not enough detail for someone with former knowledge of the fashion world. I LOVE the Body Map illustration on page 38 (did anyone actually WEAR that?!?)

                  Book Description

"A marvelous handbook for professional designers, students, or anyone with a curiosity about design." —Ballast Quarterly Review

This comprehensive guide embraces all aspects of modern design: graphics, products, interiors, furniture, and industrial and architectural design. Guy Julier examines not only the work of important designers worldwide but also the many dramatic changes that have influenced design and its uses in the twentieth century. Thus political and ideological concepts such as feminism and green design are defined and explained, as are new technological advances, new materials and techniques, and influential movements in modern culture. The text incorporates extensive cross-referencing and full bibliographical notes along with a chronological chart of design highlights since 1900.

The revised edition features over sixty completely new entries that reflect three important developments in design and its discussion—digitization, sustainability, and branding—ranging from Nintendo and The Body Shop to McDonald's and Levi's. 220 illustrations.
