Book Description

First published in 1954 and long out of print, this novel of pre-Hispanic Indian life in the Southwest combines the authenticity of an anthropological report with the suspense of a mystery novel. The author, best known as an anthropologist during his lifetime, is now recognized as a major Native American novelist. Hitherto virtually unknown, Runner in the Sun is sure to take its place next to McNickleÂ's The Surrounded, also available from UNM Press, as a classic of Native American fiction.

A novel of pre-Hispanic Indian life in the Southwest.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Endings Tend to be Mythical.......2000-07-09

A society under stress must change or be destroyed. A pre-columbian Native American village in the Southwest has endured many years of drought and has reached its breaking point. Will the external forces of nature or the internal strife of the people be the hammer that shatters the village? This question is explored through the eyes of a boy, named Salt in the language of his people. Salt survives the machinations of a powerful member of his tribe, then begins a quest to find salvation for his people. Ostensibly a novel for young adults, Runner in the Sun presents a complex metaphor to explore the forces of societal change within a familiar hero-quest plot. The story seems simple but has rich soil in which anthropological and linguistic fruit may grow. Even the boy's name, Salt, carries metaphorical depth. As the village's water evaporates in drought, what is left is the people's true essence--the minerals the water carried. D'Arcy McNickle's lifelong focus on the shape of Indian society and its relationship to its surrounding world are expressed in the mythic context of Runner in the Sun (which is also a plain good read, too).

5 out of 5 stars The best wolf story ever .......2006-12-03

I happened across this book at a swap shelf and had never heard of Lawrence before. But after the first paragraph I was hooked; I just had to find out what all happened to his dog Yukon in the three years they were together.

Lawrence had a great attention to detail without ever mentioning anything trivial. His focus was on Yukon, not himself. And the way the story unfolded, dealing with other animal encounters and the weather (as is inevitable in the Canadian wilderness) there is not a page of this book that falls into the mundane. Every animal, every person, every event in this story comes to life.

I could see my own dog in this story. I've often felt my dog Sammy was part something wild, be it Grey wolf or coyote, as Sammy shows so many similiar traits to Yukon.

Although I "recycle" my books at book swaps, this is one book I'm holding on to. If you love dogs, the wilderness, Canada or the outdoors and the environment, this book is a must-read.

5 out of 5 stars The North Runner.......2001-08-16

This is one of the most heart-warming books I've ever read. Similar to R.D. Lawrence, I owned a wolf/dog hybrid in the wilderness of Alaska. We had many great adventures together. I eventually had to leave Alaska, and my best friend. This is one of my favorite books. I highly recommend reading it.

5 out of 5 stars The story of a wolf/dog hybrid & the man who befriended him.......2000-05-29

R.D.Lawrence's book "The North Runner" is quite simply magnificent. It tells the true story of one man's friendship with a savage dog/wolf hybrid that sees man as his natural enemy, especially as he has been ill-treated since puppyhood.

When Lawrence takes the Hybrid into his home he finds that he has true savage on his hands, and that it will take all his skills as a naturalist to tame an animal that was more wolf than it was dog. This is not a sentimental book though Lawrence and the hybrid he names Yukon do become friends, rather it is a story about two creatures getting to know one another, in an unforgiving world.

Yukon is testament to man's inability to understand the mind and soul of a wolf. Lawrence eventually realizes that Yukon will never be a "people" dog and that the remainder of his life must be spent in the wild with wolves. And so Lawrence makes the ultimate sacrifice, he lets Yukon go, giving him the freedom that should have been his from birth.

This a poignant, funny, humorous and often sad book about a man and a hybrid and how they learnt to respect and love one another, yet never loose sight of which side of the fence that each belonged. For all nature lovers, especially those with a passion for dogs, wolves and hybrids.

Since I wrote this review in 2002, this book is now back in print which I am really pleased about.

I am also sad to say that R.D. Lawrence passed away in November 2003 aged 82 so for all you nature lovers out there, this is the time to stock up on his books before they go out of print again.

5 out of 5 stars A DOG LOVERS MUST READ.......1999-09-27

AS ALWAYS AS I AM A FAVORITE READER OF R.D. LAWRENCE HE BEFRIENDS A WILD WOLF DOG AND FALLS IN LOVE WITH THIS ANIMAL WHO RELATES SO MUCH TO HIM. MR. LAWRENCE IN HIS MOST DISCRIPTIVE WAYS AS ALWAYS TELLS THE STORY OF HOW HE TAKES THIS WILD ANIMAL FROM AN NATIVE INDIAN WHO BEATS THIS ANIMAL SHORT OF DEATH AND SHOWS HIM PASSION AND IN TURN IN TIME THIS DOG RETURNS THE FAVOR IN SAVING HIS LIFE. Book Description

Kendall believes in magic. He can feel it when he runs. And since his mother's death a year ago, the urge has become too big to explain. During her illness, Kendall ran to save her. Now he runs to retrieve the memory of her face. Sometimes, too, he imagines himself running like the warriors in Mom's stories, Acoma Runners returning to his mother's native pueblo tribe, to the cliffs of Acoma...Sky City...a place she promised they would visit together when he turned twelve.

As Kendall prepares for a summer-long adventure spent criss-crossing the states in his dad's semi, a letter arrives from his mother's grandfather, beckoning him to Acoma. He feels cheated, until it occurs to him that his mom might somehow be there, in Sky City. He's twelve, after all, and his mother always kept her promises.

Drawn into his great-grandfather's world of secrets and sacred ceremony, Kendall discovers that the magic he feels when he runs is a proud legacy, one linked to a way of life as ancient and mysterious as the earth itself. In the process of trying to recover his mother, Kendall reclaims his worldly and spiritual heritage, in a moving story of one boy's search for identity and belonging.

    5 out of 5 stars enchanted review.......2005-03-02

This book is about a half-white, half-Acoma boy who has to visit his grandpa during the summer. His grand pa lives in a Native American village that sits on top a mountain. Kendall tries to fit in, but the native people are a litter wiry of him because of his white dad. Kendall finds out that his constant need to run is because of magic from his Acoma blood. There is an enchanted mountain that Kendall runs to every day in the desert. At first Kendall does not want to go to visit his grandfather, he wants to go on a road trip with his dad and brother, but towards the end he likes being there and does not want to leave. In the end of the book, his grandfather visits a sacred mountain when he does not come home Kendall runs into the desert to find him. His cousin has to go looking for him before his grandfather dies. I really liked this book because the author put some into detail, you could almost believe you were there. This book was great because the setting was so cool and the plot was one of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars And enchanting tale..........2002-10-10

Little has a unique ability to draw the reader right into the setting, the character and the emotion of the story. I could see the beautiful New Mexico landscape. I could feel Kendall's worries and heartache. This story is both informative and moving - and shows deep respect for the culture of the Acoma.

    5 out of 5 stars Award-Winning Book!.......2001-02-15

This book just WON the SOUTHWEST BOOK AWARD! I am so glad ENCHANTED RUNNER won this recognition because it truly deserves it. This book is very emotionally moving, as well as having exciting, dangerous action. The setting is stunning and I loved reading about the Snake Clan and the powerful, magical runners. What a special book! I'm going to use this book in my classroom. I've never read anything else quite like it.

5 out of 5 stars Read it, then share it with your kids!.......1999-10-03

I'm 41-years-old and normally would not read a book targeted for the 9 to 12-year-old age group. But after reading Ms. Liitle's first book, BREAKAWAY, there was no way I'd pass up her second book. And I wasn't disappointed. ENCHANTED RUNNER was awesome! The research that went into the story is probably more than found in most adult novels. I was blown away by what I learned about the Acoma Culture and the Snake Clan. Visiting Sky City is now on my life's list of things to do. Parents: Do yourselves a favor. Buy this book. Read it, then share it with your kids. Ms Little: Thank you for pouring your soul into the story. I look forward to your next effort and hope there is a sequel to ENCHANTED RUNNER!

5 out of 5 stars An enchanting book........1999-08-24

Enchanted Runner is definitely enchanting. Kimberley Griffiths Little sweeps readers into her story's world; one that is a thoughtful mixture of past and present. Ditto with her characters. From the beginning, I felt Kendall's magic as if I were running beside him as he confronted wild horses, rattlesnakes, heartbreak, and ancient mysteries. I especially enjoyed the contrast between Kendall and Trina, and her curiosity about his secret ceremonies. Kendall's journey was a satisfying one. I hope a sequel is on its way because I'd like to run with him again.

        Book Description

Reed Haddok was unconscious. Strong hands lifted him and took him to safety. Haddock owed his life to the owner of those hands. Time taught him that they belonged to a mysterious Indian, but Haddock didn't have a name, a face, or a voice to use in identifying him. But he owed him. If a man was owed a whipping or a thank-you by Reed Haddok, you could count on him to pay his debt. He soon gets his chance when he finds that the man who saved his life-Tall Tree-is now the wounded captive of an Apache war party. Haddock immediately sets out to save his new Indian friend and has a little fun at the expense of the Apaches as well. The heart pounding actions that make up the rescue, escape, and trek back to Tall Tree's hidden village take a series of riveting, fast paced turns that will make the reader grab the saddle horn and hang on for dear life. TOM WHATLEY is a minister, a former Infantry Officer with the U.S. Army, and an avid outdoors man. He has traveled extensively throughout the United States and has a keen interest in the American West and Northwest. He lives in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and is the author of two other Reed Haddok novels, CUTS NO SLACK and HE AIN'T DEAD, both published by Sunstone Press.

          Book Description

The time of the New Year was an exciting one. The longhouses of the Iroquois were filled with busy people as everyone helped prepare for the celebration.

Little Runner envied the big boys who put on masks and threatened to steal prized possessions until they were dissuaded with large servings of maple sugar. It was an Iroquois ceremony, but it was the candy, not the custom, that appealed to Little Runner.

Little Runner did his best to convince his mother that he was one of the big boys, but she could not be fooled. How he finally achieved his goal makes a warmly happy story. The stunning pictures and skillfully chosen words realistically re-create the Iroquois way of life, and children will find this book that they can actually read by themselves both absorbing and delightful.

          5 out of 5 stars Childhood memory..........2005-12-20

I remember this book from when I was a little kid. I clearly remember the story - the older bother exploring the many ways he could get his hands on some maple sugar. I also remember the cool, yet simple, pictures that graced the inside pages. My mother must have red the book to me a thousand times and that is why I just had to have a copy of my own. I might even give it to my nephews. Maybe not. ^_^
I don't remember the book having any BAD influence on me. I never tried to kidnap my bother, I never tried to blackmail my parents, I never mishandled museum objects at the museum I work at and I never tried to hunt down deer to trade their skins for a tiny canoe. This is a simple story for kids to enjoy. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

1 out of 5 stars Stereotyped and offensive - avoid it!.......2004-03-28

This book, written in 1962, sadly reflects the worst tendencies of Indian-themed children's books.

Little Runner, whose tribe is never identified, looks Anglo and dresses like Daniel Boone. His life is made to look like a cartoon. Sacred items are treated in a disrespectful, offensive way. Imagine a book showing a young Jewish boy playing with a Torah, or a young Christian tossing about a crucifix, and you might get the idea of how offensive this book is.

Avoid this at all costs, and toss it out of your school library. There are many, many children's books with Native themes that are beautiful and entertaining. (...)

As an Iroquois (or as we prefer to call ourselves Haudenosaunee), I am deeply urked by this book!!! The book's sacriligious use of allowing a young boy to play with a false face mask rips at the core of my religion. A child would never be allowed to show such disregard for such a sacred object. This book should NOT be read!!!!!!!! At best it should be used to show the disregard for Native American religion and culture by the dominate society!!!

Tom Longboat was a hero. A member of the Onondaga Nation, he was born on the Six Nations reserve in Oshwegen, near Brantford, Ontario. Despite poverty, poor training, and prejudice, Longboat went on to become one of the world’s best runners. In 1907, at the height of his fame, he won the Boston Marathon and ran in the 1908 Olympic Marathon. Longboat was one of the best-known people of his day, and certainly the most prominent member of the Six Nations. Throughout his career he had to race against opponents, as well as rumors of illegal running activities. Nevertheless, he maintained his dignity, and his achievements still inspire people who understand the great pleasure of running, and running fast.

As one of four travel guides my family is taking on a 3-week long trip to Europe (mainly Denmark and Sweden), Globetrotter's Copenhagen and Denmark Travel Pack would be lonely on its own.

On the plus side, we have enjoyed the removable, fold-out map in the back jacket pocket of the guide. Sidebar comments are also interesting to know. The physical book is of good quality and the small, thin size make it easy to pack and tote around.

              Suggestions we have for improvements:
              (1) Write in bullet points, by topic, or in sections by page. The narrative paragraph format, going on for pages at a time, doesn't work well for people trying to coordinate a travel schedule.
              (2) Decide what makes this guide stand out from the pack and deliver it. Aside from the map, there isn't much in this guide that I couldn't have found out from another of the guides we purchased.

5 out of 5 stars Well done - excellent detailed map included.......2005-12-13

Does a fine overview on this progressive country. It is easy to carry, lightweight, full-color, and includes an excellent, large 2-sided map with plenty of practical details on both Copenhagen and Denmark. For a more detailed guidebook to complement this one, I'd also recommend DK Publishing's Eyewitness Travel Guide (to Denmark).
