Amusing Story.......2003-08-07

My mother used to read this book to me after lots of pleading every night because it was my favorite story. I loved the sound effects and the funny expressions on the characters faces. Finally, I begged her one to many times and she said "all right if you love it that much then it is time for you to learn to read". So I started practicing. Now, keeping in mind I probably knew it by heart, I was determined to "read" the words and put my own spin on the story. One of my fondest memories is the day I could actually read it to my family. It is the book that I first read and I will always cherish it.

Funny, especially with an adult reading it to the child.......2001-05-20

This book was one of my favorities. One of my sisters used to read it to me, and I in turn read it to her children. They enjoyed it as well. The trick to making them enjoy it is to read the "whoooooYipYipYip" parts really loud and the "Rabbit peeked out. No one was there" parts softly.

An interesting Halloween Holiday tale........1999-01-03

This was a favorite Halloween story of mine as a child. The illustrations were intriguing yet delightfully simple.

Very Handy.......2002-06-14

I have visited Myanmar three times (and plan a fourth) since purchasing this phrasebook. I would not even consider traveling to Myanmar without it. It won't teach you Burmese, but it will do what it is for -- provide you with phrases. At first you will feel like you have to be able to read the author's mind to know where in the book to find the right phrase. The best approach: just remember where you are, hotel, restaurant, etc. It works.

Burmese Phrasebook.......2000-06-26

This is exactly the type of reference book I was looking for. Not only does the book breakdown the phonetics of Burmese in a step-by-step manner, it also is very easy to place in my pocketbook. I have used the book to help me communicate with my nanny and that in itself is a blessing. While I use the book to freshen up on my Burmese, my nanny loves perusing through it to freshen up on her English.

Great book but a little short........1999-07-12

This book teaches you Pidgn English.This language is spoken in Papua New Guinea,and other Pacific Island countries.It is great for the traveler.Pidgn is an extremely simple language for english speakers to learn.The pronnounciation is the same and the words sound exactly the same.The only problem is that it is a bit short,otherwise if you want to learn Pidgn,buy this book.

An essential addition to traveling in PNG.......1999-06-09

Papua New Gunea has a myriad of local languages but one truly common language-pigdin English. Being able to communicate with the locals in even the most isolated of villages is both an advantage and an experience I highly recommend. The book itself is top pocket size (a huge advantage), well laid out and predictable. The only critism is that it is limited but then again so is the language. A must for travelling in PNG.

Excellent value.......2001-03-02

I found this little book to be a good value- there is so little available on the languages of Sri Lanka- There a lots of little cultural tips as well- An audio tape would be a good accessory-

Not very useful.......2000-05-01

This little book is not very useful for learning such a complex language. There is nothing about the alphabet and the pronunciation guide is confusing.

Not a Good Way to Learn Singhalese.......2000-02-29

Right before my trip to Sri Lanka I purchased this book. I find the culture and language fascinating, but I was incredibly frustrated by my lack of understanding of Singhalese. Nearly every word in the Singhalese language is at least twice as long as any word in English.

For a person w/ no previous experience w/ Singhalese this book will be too cursory to provide much benefit. I don't recommend taking it w/ you to Sri Lanka unless you have nothing else. On the other hand, it doesn't cost much, and is probably worth its price tag.

A superbly illustrated history, "Homeland" is a historical overview of 3,500 years of Israel's complex and complicated history presented with the accuracy of university level scholarship and the accessibility of a graphic novel. Exceptionally easy to understand, Israel's history is laid out chronologically with almost every page featuring full color photos and painted illustrations enhancing a superimposed explanatory text. The collaborative effort of Marv Wolfman, Mario Ruiz, and William J. Rubin, "Homeland" begins with the story of Abraham, continues through biblical times down to the period of Roman rule, the diaspora, the Holocaust, the founding of the modern State of Israel, notes its accomplishments, as well as the recent wars the Israeli's have had to wage in order to preserve their nation and themselves. Of special note is how the authors, while writing from a Jewish perspective, have also drawn upon non-Jewish narratives as well, giving "Homeland" an historical context with respect to contemporary Middle East issues. A unique and visually impressive publication which is also available in paperback ($19.95), "Homeland: The Illustrated History of the State of Israel" is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, school, and community library collections.

A Unique Item!.......2007-06-26

This wonderfully llustrated history gives a great overview of Jewish heritage and a context for today's politics. A great way to get a grounding in the subject for those of Jewish heritage who missed Hebrew School, or others wanting insight into the tragedies and traditions informing modern Judaism (and Zionism). Would be great for teens, but also for adults looking for the big picture.

Fun and Amazing Graphics.......2007-04-12

A friend let me read her copy and I just ordered my own.
The story is both enlightening and entertaining.
And the web doesn't even do justice to the graphics. They are even more amazing in print. I think fans of history (both ancient and contemporary) and those who like graphic novels will love this new book.

This is the first time I've ever reviewed an item at Amazon.com, but I think this book is so special, I had to share my comments.

The illustrations are breathtaking and the content is interesting, easy to read and digest, and through provoking. I love every page!

This book is the perfect gift for anyone interested in history, art, Israel, or politics.

A Great Book to Learn the Basics of Poltava.......2003-11-06

This is a great book to learn all of the basic facts regarding the Battle of Poltava, and the results of the state of Europe afterward.

I say it's great for the basic facts, because it packs in what exactly happened leading to the battle to the end result including strategies and tactics, but it doesn't bring you in the mind of the soldier. To restate, you will read about all of the objective facts of the battle, and the maps help the reader visualize how the battle took place.

To learn about the Battle of Poltava on a more personal level, I recommend reading "The Battle That Shook Europe: Poltava and the Birth of the Russian Empire," by Peter Englund. You'll see the war from the Swedish perspective there.

An excellent, well written book.......2000-12-06

Poltava 1709

Few Americans have benefited from a formal education that included studies of the Great Northern War and the campaigns of Charles XII of Sweden. We seem to have to remind ourselves that, at one time, Sweden was a power to be reckoned with in European affairs. This interesting and well written book gives a quick review of the events leading up to the battle of Poltava, which marked the end of Sweden's dominance in northern Europe - and the start of Russian influence in the history of Europe.

The author discusses the events leading up to the ill-fated attempt to again `put Russia in her place'. He gives a very good description of the armies involved, as well as the contrasting tactics employed by each. branch. His description of the lives and careers of the two protagonists, Charles XII and Tsar Peter, add to the overall quality of the book. The maps are clear and enlightening, as is usually the case in other books of this series.

I strongly recommend this book to others who are interested in the subject. I feel that it reads as easily as a good novel and that it tends to inspire one to seek out further books on the subject.

Massoulie is not able to come through on his attempt to produce a concise, illustrated account of the dynamics of historical challenges plaguing the Middle East. Ultimately, we are left with a relatively uninformative picture book that is is likely too dry for most readers... even the illustrations don't save it! Skip this read.
