Excellent Practical Guide.......2000-01-05
This is an excellent practical guide for the sheep producer. Dr. Gates has done a commendable job in keeping the book at a producer level, yet containing enough information that readers can make sound management decisions. This book was not created to be a veterinary reference book, rather it is a producer book that many veterinarians find useful. The third edition does need to be updated as the information is a bit dated. The book is hard to find. A very concise practical book written by an author with a lifetime of experience.

Leave The Treestand And The Beer Belly At Home!.......2006-03-17
This is an outstanding book for anyone, but particularly bowhunters, planning to hunt the mountains in Alaska or northern Canada. One can get by with eastern whitetail gear on a moose hunt or caribou hunt, but in the northern mountains, it is a different game. I have hunted extensively in Alaska and Canada, so Russ' book struck home with me. Mountain hunting tactics can of course be debated endlessly, but physical preparation and gear issues for the high country are open to less discussion. There ARE do's and don'ts when it comes to outfitting oneself for sheep, goats, northern mule deer, etc. The sheer remoteness and harshness of the lands where such hunts take place demand that the bowhunter carry tested, tried, and true equipment into such environs. Tony Russ gives the hunter an exhaustively tested gear list, tells the hunter how to prepare physically, and in turn lets him or her head out with confidence.
I read this book three or four times before my most recent alpine hunt. I combined its information with that from a DVD on preparing to climb Mt. Ranier as well as with a few books on alpine mountaineering. I obtained much of my equipment from Barney's Outdoor Chalet in Anchorage (Barney's specializes in outfitting sheep hunters and they do ship worldwide), but also ordered from high-end military tactical suppliers (Crye Precision was my supplier for an outstanding tactical vest) and mountaineering stores, both local and on line. I used Russ' advice as a starting point, and then questioned retailers on what they stocked that fit those recommendations. In doing so, I was not disappointed. On an earlier hunt, I had not taken this sort of time, nor made this sort of effort, and I had a very rough 10 days. The second time around, that much wiser, I left prepared.
My one caveat regarding Russ' recommendations would be to consider the plastic boots he discusses only if you cannot find a pair of Lowa or similar leather boots that fit well. The plastic boots can place extreme strain on knees and hips over days and weeks, as they lack the "give" that even stiff leather boots offer. For me, Lowa boots combined with a Gortex liner sock for use when the boot became wet worked very well. With a sheep hunt costing as much as it did, having a pair of Lowa boots wear out before a pair of plastic boots would have worn out was of little consequence.
I also recommend training on a rock wall, and pushing the aerobic conditioning in combination with circuit training on weights if you are not living and exercising in the mountains. It takes me at least a week to adapt to the thinner air and the terrain, and that first week is a rough one! Also, I learned that it is best to SHIP YOUR GEAR A MONTH BEFORE THE HUNT. On my first hunt, First Air lost my bags and made little effort to find them. I had to borrow gear, as very little could be bought near camp. I won't leave for a remote hunt unless my gear is shipped and waiting for me.
Finally, you had better be mentally prepared to suffer. Tents are tiny, drinking water can be in short supply, bugs can be terrible, etc. But, then, that's why it's sheep hunting.
Sheep Hunting in Alaska: The Dall Sheep Hunters Guide.......2003-03-10
Never having hunted before I moved to Alaska, I sought information from guides and shooters on whom to read for the best information on hunting Alaska. Everyone I spoke to agreed: read Tony Russ first, last, always. From how to dress ("cotton kills"), to what to carry, he covers it in an easily readable style. Having read his books before each hunt helped refine my techniques, and helped me to secure my prey on every one of my hunts. This book should be required reading of every hunter on his or her way to Alaska.
Sheep Hunting in Alaska (2nd Edition.......2003-01-17
A great manual for anyone who plans to hunt dall sheep. many tricks that I am sure most quides don't use. Clear and well written it is enteraining as well as informative. I wish I had read it years ago. Tricks on using camoflage to sneak up on sheep. I am an experienced sheep hunter and I learned more from this book than I expected.
Marc Taylor--Author, Hunting Hard...In Alaska!.......2002-12-29
Tony lets us have it all -- holding nothing back!
A hunter of Dall sheep can easily refer to this book to avoid dangerous and costly mistakes made from relying on improper equipment. Just follow the easy-to-read gear guidelines and make note of Tony's favorites when making your own purchasing/packing list.
This book is packed with information on sheep habitat and habits, giving you the knowledge necessary to be successful in pursuit of the most sought-after trophy in Alaska -- The Dall sheep!
A must for all Sheep hunters !!.......2002-11-26
This is a must read for all sheep hunters be they novices, experinced sheep hunters, or folks thinking of trying sheep hunting for the first time.
It's one of those books that after you read it, you'll recommend it to your friends, and buy copies for your buddies.

Essential Illustrated Guide for the Ghost Town Lover!.......2003-06-30
I am a native Californian, although I have lived in Boston for many years. One of the most intriguing parts of California for me has been visiting abandoned and restored pioneer towns in the Golden State. About 70 miles from my first home in San Bernardino, is located an old mining town, Calico, in the middle of the Mojave desert. That town has set my expectations for visiting pioneer towns.
For my 49th birthday, my father and wife arranged for me to have a 49er vacation that included attending a San Francisco 49er football game and then heading off into the gold country to revisit the sites where the great gold rush first began.
From knowing a lot about California history, I knew of many towns and sites that I wanted to see. But along the way, I was intrigued by signs and notes about many sites that I had never heard about before. I wished that I had had along a source as fine as Ghost Towns of Northern California.
Although his book will seem like a coffee table book to some, I found it to be an essential exploration guide. More than 50 towns and sites are described and pictured. Mr. Varney does a fine job of giving you the local history (which often includes how much gold was mined locally and how it was mined) while the photographs give you a sense of what there is to see. You also get maps that can easily be used to find each of these locations. Most are concentrated in the gold areas (such as near the Oregon border, near route 49, and in the high Sierras), but others have different backgrounds and locations such as Alcatraz and China Camp in the San Francisco Bay area.
The author defines a "ghost town" as being a town that has had a large slide in its permanent population, even if it is still populated. So few of these "ghost towns" are uninhabited like Calico was when I was a youngster.
I double checked the accuracy of the information by comparing my experiences on my 49er vacation to what the book says, and the information and views tallied perfectly. Nice job!
The photographs are more realistic than artistic. That is not to say that they are not beautiful in many cases, but they give you a realistic view of what you will see rather than a "sunset at Sedona" feeling.
You probably won't want to visit all of these ghost towns, but the book will help you decide when and where you will want to visit. I strongly urge you to decide to visit the sites that interest you and to use this valuable guide to help you plan and follow through on your plans.
I thought the book is an exceptional value. I would have gladly paid more than twice the asking price for this great resource!
After you finish enjoying the photographs and text, spend some time rereading Mark Twain's stories about the gold camps. It will help you get in the mood for planning a wonderful trip!
Can't wait!.......2002-03-06
Bought the book in anticipation of being out in that area soon, and after reading the great historical info and seeing the beautiful photos, I can't wait to get out there and see some of the places for myself!
I only wish the maps had been a little more detailed, and that the author could have provided coordinates of the sites from a GPS, to make it easier to get to the locations.

Book Description
The most immediate threats to humankind are military devastation and environmental exhaustion, both on a global scale. SIPRI, in co-operation with the United Nations Environment Programme, presents with this book the fifth major study in a series that examines linkages between these two threats. In the study specialists from several disciplines examine the ways in which cultural norms concerning the environment have inhibited the conduct of war and preparations for it, and suggest how such norms could be strengthened and developed. The subject is approached from the following perspectives: historical evolution of cultural norms concerning war and the environment; differing approaches of men and women; the special challenge of the nuclear age; roles of government and law; influence of education and the mass media; and philosophical and aesthetic influences. This series addresses the problems of constraining war and of maintaining an environment that can promote human life and welfare by examining the issues of warfare and security in relation to environmental and ecological concerns and then formulating policy recommendations. It should prove of interest, therefore, to everyone who has a personal interest in these subjects.

The Cold War saw the development of nuclear weapons having awesome destructive power. Weapons of Peace: The Nuclear Arms Race examines the quest for nuclear superiority, and how it affected the United States, the Soviet Union, and the whole world for more than forty years.
Customer Reviews:
The ridiculous book title say it all.......2007-05-02
The author should be embarrassed to make the case that the most evil thing ever created brings peace. Think about the title of the book - Weapons of Peace: The Nuclear Arms Race. This is exactly the kind of propaganda the Air Force uses to convince someone to become a missile officer.
On a positive note, this book is an excellent example of how truth is preverted to build public support for the existing insane overkill arsenal. The US must end our addiction to nuclear weapons or nuclear weapons will one day end us.

Book Description
What factors drive arms races? What role does military technology play in arms build-ups? How have arms build-ups differed under various political systems? Arms Races combines deep theoretical analysis with extensive empirical studies to provide readers with an in-depth understanding of the issues involved in the arms race. The contributors consider the driving forces of the arms races, a major area of research and debate within peace studies, strategic studies, and international relations. They focus both on internal factors to the dynamics of the arms races--such as bureaucratic politics, inter-service rivalry, and the military-industrial complex--and on external factors, such as long term economic trends and interactive arms dynamics between the two superpowers. Existing case studies of the development of strategic weapons systems and the many quantitative studies of the causes and consequences of the arms race are extensively reviewed. "Anyone wanting to get access to the state of the art could not do better than to start with this one. It gives a thoughtful, wide-ranging and constructive criticism of the whole attempt to understand arms racing. A very useful book...It should be particulary welcome to those seeking a way into a large and scattered literature, and to those trying to find coherent teaching material." --International Relations and Organizations "The Gleditsch introductory overview is extremely useful--the sort of article that students with an essay to do on the topic would kill for....an extremely useful collection of papers on a topic which is likely, unfortunately, to be of enduring interest." --Pacific Research

This Was The Best Joke Book I Have Ever Read........2001-10-17
This book was soooooo bad with its facts and analyses that I laughed until I cried and was rolling on the floor for a half an hour!!! And that was only the first 3 chapters...
yellow journalism!.......2000-04-19
I bought the book for its nostalgic value, and it proved worth a chuckle. There is a plethora of information and statistics, but Caldicott's writing is littered with prejudice and emotion to the point of sensationalism; it's over the top. The arms race was/is deplorable, but there's no need to be so heavy-handed and repetitive. The lack of objectivity undermines the gravity of the subject. And it went on for 300+ pages! A concise timeline ending with "Isn't that dreadful?" would have sufficed. After the first chapter, i started highlighting the more ludicrous passages. Pick it up and read it aloud in a funny voice!
This was a very informative work..........2000-03-26
"Missile Envy" by Dr. Caldicott was a very informative book on the horrors and outrageous costs of nuclear warfare and proliferation. It is very obvious that Dr. Caldicott knows *exactly* what she is talking about on the subject; this made the book a pleasure to read in spite of its unsettling content. Thank you...

The 1991 Gulf war has highlighted the dangers of non-conventional weapons and ballistic missile proliferation in the Third World in general and in the Middle East in particular. But the dangers of non-conventional weapons proliferation are not confined to Iraq: both ballistic missiles and
chemical weapons are widespread and a number of countries continue with biological weapons research. This book contains papers by leading world experts on all aspects of non-conventional weapons proliferation in the post-Gulf War period.

American Furniture 2006 (American Furniture)
ASIN: 0801878691 |
Book Description
Thomas Dennis emigrated to America from England in 1663, settling in Ipswich, a Massachusetts village a long day's sail north of Boston. He had apprenticed in joinery, the most common method of making furniture in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Britain, and he became Ipswich's second joiner, setting up shop in the heart of the village. During his lifetime, Dennis won wide renown as an artisan. Today, connoisseurs judge his elaborately carved furniture as among the best produced in seventeenth-century America.
Robert Tarule, historian and accomplished craftsman, brilliantly recreates Dennis's world in recounting how he created a single oak chest. Writing as a woodworker himself, Tarule vividly portrays Dennis walking through the woods looking for the right trees; sawing and splitting the wood on site; and working in his shop on the chest -- planing, joining, and carving. Dennis inherited a knowledge of wood and woodworking that dated back centuries before he was born, and Tarule traces this tradition from Old World to New. He also depicts the natural and social landscape in which Dennis operated, from the sights, sounds, and smells of colonial Ipswich and its surrounding countryside to the laws that governed his use of trees and his network of personal and professional relationships.
Thomas Dennis embodies a world that had begun to disappear even during his lifetime, one that today may seem unimaginably distant. Imaginatively conceived and elegantly executed, The Artisan of Ipswich gives readers a tangible understanding of that distant past.

Tarule, himself a furniture-maker in Vermont making reproductions of 17th-century furniture, tells Thomas Dennis's story almost as if Dennis were a character in a novel. Dennis was one of the first furniture-makers in America to gain notoriety. Coming to America and settling in the Massachusetts village of Ipswich in the mid 1600s, Dennis used many of the techniques and styles found in British furniture-making of this period. Yet having to select appropriate trees from American forests, usually in consideration of village laws relating to certain kinds of trees, work with other American craftsmen, make furniture to order from nearby residents, and give it suitable embellishments for attractiveness, Dennis is seen as an originator of American woodworking and furniture-making. But in this work, Tarule is not interested in a study of furniture-making, or a history of it. The author's concern is the work and expertise Dennis put into making one oak chest. From the author's following this in detail, one learns a great deal about 17th-century furniture-making and also the regional Colonial society. For Dennis is viewed in the narrative as both a extraordinary and respected craftsman and a member of the community which supported and shaped his trade. Tarule does not simply say what kind of wood the particular chest was made of, but takes the reader right with Dennis as he goes to the nearby woods looking for a tree with suitable oak tree, keeping in mind the village's laws. "As soon as Thomas Dennis entered the Ipswich woods, he was in the New World. The forest was primordial...The sort of trees Dennis looked for are apparent in his furniture. The wood is close grained...." And so on with a discussion of different types of oak trees whose characteristics Ipswich artists knew from "forest type, slope degree and direction, dampness of the ground, soil conditions, and even genetic variation on local trees." Tarule even engages in a comparison of British forests and American forests of the period, and changes in American forests over time. Tarule weaves a fascinating narrative under the general heading of Americana of interest to diverse readers such as antique dealers, woodworkers, and American Colonial historians.
