Customer Reviews:
An uplifting collection of stories for the female equestrian.......2003-12-24
After completing their two previous books, "Dogs and Their Women" and "Cats and Their Women," authors Cohen and Taylor set out to put together this third compliation. After submitting ads to equine journals requesting that women send in their stories of their experiences with horses, they received over 300 responses. 58 were selected for inclusion in this book.
Each vignette is unique - some are only a few sentences in length, others take up a whole page, and the content of each is as widely varied as the length. Contributors include owners, riders, trainers, children and adults, amateurs and professionals, a mounted police officer, an equine photographer, a Standardbred racehorse driver, a veterinarian, and more. Topics covered range from stories of healing, horses as an escape from and balm for life's problems, a child's first horse, memorials for favorite horses that have passed on, lessons learned from horses, obstacles overcome, goals made and reached, or simply a description of a favorite moment with an equine friend.
My two favorite stories were one by a woman whose two horses were stolen and sold for slaughter, and the miraculous way they were rescued and returned to her; and a second by a woman who had adopted a Mustang whose previous owner had abused her, and the journey of trust-building and healing they have gone through.
Each vignette is accompanied by a beautiful full-page photograph of the contributor and her horse. The black and white photography gives the book a classic, elegant, timeless feel, and captures each horse and woman in a crisp, beautiful portrait shot. Some of the shots are posed, others candid, and this too adds to the variety of the book.
This book is heartwarming, fun, and uplifting - an alternate title could easily be "Chicken Soup for the Horsewoman's Soul." I would highly recommend it to any female horse lover. Buy it for yourself - it's great for either the bedside or the coffee table, or buy it as a nice present for a friend. Or both! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel.
A sweet group of essays written by women about their horses.......2001-03-03
This is really a very sweet book. It would be a perfect gift for a young girl in her early teens that has been bitten by the horse bug. It has over 100 pages, with a large black and white photo on one side, and an essay on the other. Some of the essays are short, some are boring, and some make you wonder why you bought this book. But then you read the ones that bring tears to your eyes and you know why. This book shows us women and the horses they love, and in their own words they tell us a little about themselves and their horse. It's not a glorious coffee table book like GaWaNi Pony Boy's is, but it is a charming book to read and pass along to other women, or our daughters who share our love of horses.
Horses And Their Women.......1997-08-06
Scores of small essays about the special horse(s) in various women's lives. A big black and white photo on one page is complemented by the story right beside it. There are no color photos. Some of the "essays" are only two sentences long! Some of the stories are hilarious, some heartbreaking, some just silly or sappy. Still, there is a genuine love of horses here, and no male-bashing like the title might suggest. If you love horses, real horses, not just fictional or perfect horses, than display this book proudly on your shelf
The right book for the adult wishing for a horse.......1997-06-18
This is the kind of book that makes you wish you could have someone else drop the kids off at soccer and ballet lessons so you had time to slip into your jeans and head out to the stable. Lots
of photos and stories of girls and women alike who have accomplished that dream. By Claire

Book Description
Near the homes of photographers John Willis and Tom Young is a paper mill that sits in the otherwise pristine and picturesque climes of western Massachusetts. For Willis and Young, this site is one of both aesthetic and philosophical contradictions: despite its verdant locale, the mill—with its ominous smoke stacks and countless bales of discarded paper—brings to mind the dreariness of industrialization and the impermanence of life itself. But the factory is actually one where such litter is reborn as reusable paper.
Willis and Young’s stunning black-and-white images, collected in this unforgettable volume, transform this mill and the innumerable mounds of recyclable waste it processes daily into an indelible and evocative landscape. Recycled Realities is not a jeremiad foretelling the consequences of excessive waste, rampant pollution, or unbridled consumption, but rather a profound meditation on the hidden meanings and connections that linger beneath the debris and detritus of everyday life. These astonishing and often surreal photos of discarded paper from the printed world trace the processes of emergence, revelation, and redemption that make the cycle of life possible. In their photographs, Willis and Young take that which we have discarded and create new forms of being in and of themselves: vibrant and ultimately life-affirming portraits of who we are as people and the realities that we constantly build—and rebuild—all around us.

This little piggie.......2001-04-10
Pigs have piglets (and the other books in this series) is a delightful and educational book for young children. Full-page color photos across from the text helps young readers understand the information they are reading (& they're pretty cute, for pigs). The more advanced words are in bold text which corresponds to a glossary in the back. Lynn Stone is a well-known author of educational non-fiction books. Enjoy this one.

Awesome Guide Book!.......2007-10-18
This is an excellent guide book of The Big Island! It has so much great information!! I will be going to The Big Island in April 2008 for the first time. I can't imagine going without this book! Best guide book! Thank you!
Hawaii The Big Island Revealed.......2007-10-09
This was a very informative book helping to plan our vacation to Hawaii. It helped us to decide where to go and what to avoid. Thanks!
So accurate, so entertaining.......2007-10-05
Reading the book itself was like experiencing everything the author had while researching it, the writing is candid, humorous, insightful. It made our three day (I know, short) trip to the Big Island a great success. Except for one thing: the winds that the author describes as being strong in the afternoon on the Kohala coast are actually strong in the morning, but (according to our hotel) only in the summer (around September). If you spend such a short time on the island, this book is totally worth it. I just wish we had been considered "locals" like him, because in the low season (September), Hawaiians just aren't as friendly. There were hardly any tourists (weather is less predictable, it's past the main travel season in both US and Asia) and the locals appeared to be enjoying their time away from the crowds. But that's our experience, and don't let it stop you from buying this guide.
Welcome to Lava Land.......2007-10-04
This book enriched my trip to the Big Island of Hawaii immeasurably. Its recommendations of things to do, places to eat, and its guide to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park made the trip a sure thing.
Looks great!.......2007-09-28
I haven't had a chance to put this book to use yet but it has been invaluable in planning so much so that we are not going to purchase any additional overall guide books for Hawaii. The big features of this book versus other guide books are great maps and numerous color photos. It is also fun to read. I was surprised to find restaurant and comprehensive lodging info included, particularly if you refer to their website for more info. They even have links to the properties' websites.
The only drawback is the lack of detail on each of the hiking trails. Lots of description but the basic information such as length of the trail is often left out. It also seems the authors really want you to go to the out of the way trails. Many take all day or multiple days to do. Perhaps they are all like that on the Big Island and on Kauai (the other book in this series I've purchased.)

Book Description
May, 1997: The small outdated town of Wilmington, Virginia is shocked at the discovery of a human skeleton buried beneath the rocks at Star's crossing. The old abandoned ninety-foot high railroad trestle support wall located there in the foothills of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains had hosted few visitors since the trestle was demolished a year ago. Now the grim discovery of the as yet unidentified remains was about to set off a chain of events that would rock the conservative community to its core.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT EFFORT BY PRUETT IN HIS FIRST PUBLICATION.......2000-11-30
THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IN THIS BOOK IS OUTSTANDING. IF YOU READ IT YOU WILL NEVER FORGET THE DEPRESSED AND SUICIDAL COP NAMED "BRONCO". BRONCO IS A CHARACTER YOU CAN SEE, HEAR, AND FEEL. HE IS A BIT OF EVERYMAN WITH HIS TRAGEDIES, SOCIAL BUNGLING, BRILLIANCE, SELF-DOUBT, AND ONE MORE VICTORY OVER THE BAD GUYS ALBEIT AT CONSIDERABLE PERSONAL EXPENSE.
THE PLOT UNFOLDS WITH ENOUGH SURPRISES TO KEEP ONE TURNING THE PAGES. AS THE ACTION ESCALATES, IT IS A HARD BOOK TO PUT ASIDE. IN FACT, HAVE A POT OF COFFEE HANDY, BECAUSE YOU MIGHT BE UP ALL NIGHT CHASING THE ENDING OF THIS NEW MYSTERY WRITER'S CREATION.
AN ACCIDENTAL DEATH ALONG WITH AN ATTEMPTED COVER-UP THREATENS THE CAREER OF A POLITICIAN WITH PRESIDENTIAL POTENTIAL. THE PLOT REALLY THICKENS WHEN HIGH SCHOOL CLASSMATES HOLD THEIR TWENTIETH CLASS REUNION ONLY TO LEARN THEIR OLD SECRET IS NO LONGER A SECRET.
THE AUTHOR SHOWS AN ADEPTNESS IN DESCRIBING SETTINGS, MOODS, AND A BACKWATER AMERICAN TOWN. THE CHARACTERS FIT THE SETTING AND THE SETTING FITS THE PLOT. THE BOOK READS AS IF THE AUTHOR HAS BEEN PRACTICING AND HAS NOW DECIDED TO SHARE HIS SKILLS.
THIS BOOK TOUCHES ON BENEVALENCE, SADISM, TRUE FRIENDSHIP, SEXISM, RAPE, TORTURE, AND THE VICTORY OF GOOD OVER EVIL.
IT IS TOO GOOD TO MISS AND THE AUTHOR HAS ANOTHER IN THE MILL. DARRELL PRUETT WILL NOT BE A ONE BOOK THRILL.

Book Description
Long ignored and belittled for its proximity to comic culture and vandalism, graffiti has steadily remained in the public view: ubiquitous and with a natural affinity to architecture it has become a fundamental aspect of the modern city, influencing public perception and borrowed by fashion, packaging, graphic designers and architects alike.
An offspring of this scene, born out of tags and throw-ups, writing has become modern urban calligraphy. While the classic New York style of writing originated in typography, it in turn has left its mark on virtually all visual disciplines: strictly speaking the arrangement of space by outlines, writing has become an invaluable influence an inspiration, especially in the realm of illustration, logo design, motion graphics and architecture.
Complemented by a number of essays, "Writing" (compiled by Berlin activists and designers Markus Mai and Arthur Remke) now surveys this appropriation of public space and examines the detailed fusion of analogue writing and digital design.
The content (tags, throw-ups, lettering, objects, graphic design and street art documenting the current, changing influences of writing, art and graphics) reached from a straight documentation of this low tech conspiracy to extremely intricate architectural exercises, integrating the unique spatial properties of graffiti writing, its shapes, forms and angles, into three-dimensional objects of buildings.
Customer Reviews:
Pricey and Average.......2007-01-19
I found the Urban Calligraphy and Beyond to be an alright source of information on some "tag" style of graffiti and the sort of geometrical base for that type of artwork but I was expecting more actual type faces for reference. Lacking in sources of reference and the layout of book seems as though it is trying to be some what of a fine art book rather than a resource for typographic inspiration.
One of the best!.......2006-04-29
To me this book was a very good introductory to the Art of Calligraphy. It talks about its' history, and classifies it into different categories. It also includes interviews with artists such as AMOK and POET. This is a really good book for researchers, artists, designers (especially Graphic Designers) it's really excellent for inspiration. The book is a little too pricy but I don't think you will find a book this good for a lesser price -if you do then make sure you let me know;p
From the book:
This book presents aspects of Writing's development in the following chapters: Foreword and History - Tag/Throw up - Letter/Word - 2D/3D - Analogy - Object - Graphics - Urban:: Art :: Activism
It also answers questions such as: what is Writing? How do Writers do it? Why does Writing look the way it does? Where are Writing's boundaries? Whereto will Writing develop in the future?
cool collection.......2005-10-17
The book has examples of various different styles of calligraphy from a bunch of artists. It also has photos of "applied examples". My only gripe is the price -- the book seems like it's printed on unnecessarily heavy stock. I would've never paid retail for it. Price is the only thing keeping this from getting 5 stars.
Word!.......2005-07-28
A truly well designed and thought out appreciation for "Writing Styles" and it's effect on street art...installation and design! A must have for anyone considering a discourse in the art of Tagging! My only crit is that the publishers failed to consider the art or writing styles of those "other" (street) artists such as NeckFace for a real comparison of the movement. Overall though, BUY BUY BUY!
Writing as an artform.......2004-10-20
This book is a must for any graffiti enthusiast or anyone interested in the culture of writing and graffiti. Writing (the term used for quick marker tags or names) is addressed as an artform, and this book beautifully illustrates the complexity of the styles and aesthetics of these quick and furtive gestures. The book is full of samples of different letterforms and common shape styles found in writing, and the majority of work is from writers based in Germany and elsewhere in the world (a refreshing perspective away from the NYC graffiti culture). The book also addresses artwork which derives its roots from the graffiti and writing culture: digital pieces, collage, photography, and 3d work are all displayed, explained, and analyzed. The layout of the book is crisp, clean, and a pleasure to read. I highly recommend it!
