Book Description
The inspiring true story of two great friends, a baby hippo named Owen and a 130-yr-old giant tortoise named Mzee (Mm-ZAY). When Owen was stranded after the Dec 2004 tsunami, villagers in Kenya worked tirelessly to rescue him. Then, to everyone's amazement, the orphan hippo and the elderly tortoise adopted each other. Now they are inseparable, swimming, eating, and playing together. Adorable photos e-mailed from friend to friend quickly made them worldwide celebrities. Here is a joyous reminder that in times of trouble, friendship is stronger than the differences that too often pull us apart.

Excellent.......2007-10-17
My 3 y/o great niece loved this book. Loved it, read over and over again.
Beautiful pictures and a moving story.......2007-10-01
This excellent account of the true story of Owen and Mzee will delight any young reader. The beautiful pictures of the animals and the park are perfectly complemented by the easy-to-read text making this book a wonderful story-time resource. Though young readers may be saddened when Owen loses his mother, his adoption by Mzee will soothe any lingering concerns while teaching a powerful lesson about acceptance. This book would be an inspiring addition to any family library.
I like this book.......2007-09-08
I bought this book for my four year old neice. It is a great story of friendship with the added bonus of being a true story. There are a lot of great photos in the book and my neice really enjoyed talking about the pictures and she added some details to the book just my commenting on what she could see in the pictures. I think this is a good purchase.
Great Book for Both Kids and Adults.......2007-08-31
Such a cute book and sent in mint condition. I would recommend this book for both children and adults.
Wonderful.......2007-08-01
What a sweet story. This book makes a great gift.It is excellent for adults to share with children.
Book Description
In this exciting follow-up to OWEN & MZEE, the New York Times bestselling story about an orphaned baby hippo named Owen and the 130-year-old giant turtle, Mzee, Craig Hatkoff explores the language of love, friendship, and nurturance that these two incredible creatures share with one another. This book traces their first year together, including their adorable playful ways and the unique "language" that they have developed.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely true tale .......2007-08-25
We purchased this book for our four-year-old avid book lover. While the book gives way to much info to keep a four-year-old's attention (unless they really love books), the photos are amazing and it is easy to shorten the relatable information until the child is old enough to appreciate it. Great book for reading/looking through just before going to a zoo.
Owen & Mzee a Wonderful Book.......2007-08-24
I got this book for my 4 year old niece. As an animal lover, I knew she would be charmed, but I didn't expect the adults to be so enthralled. Everyone who picks up this book gets caught up in the story and pictures. Thank you.
a marvelous story and book.......2007-08-23
The story and pictures are terrific, and the story of these unusual friends is beautifully told. A super book to own.
A lovely story kids will find involving........2007-07-10
Isabella Hatkoff, Craig Hatkoff and Dr. Paula Kahumbu's OWEN & MZEE: THE LANGUAGE OF FRIENDSHIP provides a sequel to the true story of a unique friendship between a land tortoise and a baby hippo. Photos by Peter Greste explore a special friendship in text and color images, making for a lovely story kids will find involving.
Nice one.......2007-06-02
We have enjoyed reading this book about the unusual friendship between an orphaned baby hippo and a crusty old tortoise.
The quality of the paper used and the large photo-illustrations are appealing.
The story is delightful and raises many questions, some of which are answered. It both invites the reader to marvel at the mysteries that exist in nature, and educates the reader a little about the animals concerned and conservation in general.

Cute Idea for a Book.......2007-10-02
I haven't given this to my granddaughters yet, will at Easter time. But the book is cute, something they will enjoy the night before Easter.
The Night Before Easter.......2007-05-10
A bright happy book! Fun to find other objects in the story after reading the whole book. Would definitly recommend this book. Looking forward to purchasing other The Night Before books!
Cute!.......2007-03-22
I ordered this book for my grandson for Easter. I also have "The Night Before Thanksgiving". Since my 5-year old grandson liked that one so much, I decided to order the Easter version. The "story" is similar to "The Night Before Christmas".
Terrific Holiday Book.......2004-03-24
My son received this as an Easter Gift for his first Easter, and we are still reading it three Easters later. He loves to hear it, and I love to read it to him. This makes a great addition to your Easter Basket!
Twas the Night Before Easter.......2000-01-20
A charming Easter tale sure to delight young and old alike. Children will love looking for the eggs hidden in the pictures and listening to the rhythmic language; adults will smile at the new and original twists on this Easter time take-off of the well-loved Twas the Night Before Christmas. The perfect Easter basket gift!
Book Description
In this revised edition of Herpetology, the authors provide the only treatment of amphibians and reptiles that integrates information about evolutionary relationships with ecology, behavior, and physiology and provide up-to-date references to the primary literature.
KEY TOPICS The book is broken down into four parts and explores these specific questions: what are amphibians and reptiles; how do they work; what do they do; and what are their prospects for survival.
MARKET This book is ideal for professionals such as zoo and aquarium curators, animal keepers, reptile and amphibian hobbyists, wildlife managers and conservationists who are looking for an integrated approach to the ecology, behavior, morphology, and physiology of amphibians and reptiles, presented in a phylogenetic and organismal context.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent conceptually.......2006-01-24
It's certainly not complete or perfect, and as a reviewer notes, contains some omissions and errors. However, while a textbook should strive to be as good as possible in those areas, it's no substitute for the primary literature in peer-reviewed journals and shouldn't be viewed as such, and instead should be seen as more of a conceptual introduction, in which I feel it does well. It avoids the tempting parade-of-taxa style, and instead focuses on the important concepts uniting reptiles and to an extent all animals, such as osmoregulation, feeding, locomotion, reproductive strategies, etc.
The section dealing with my primary focus, locomotion, is rather sparse, and contains some outdated information, but nothing that can't be corrected with a quick read through the literature. With any luck, my own work will be in the next edition.
Anurans and Squamates and Crocodylia! Oh, my!.......2002-11-19
This is easily the best herpetology text book out there. It is informative, yet not full of the boringness (if that's a word...) of many textbooks. You might say that it's...fun to read.
Herp Textbook.......2000-05-03
I have just finished an undergradute course which used this book as the main text. I agree with the previous reviewer that there is considerable overlap and occasional contradiction. The early chapters tend to use a lot of technical jargon, and seem to be written for people who already understand the material. I was not so impressed with phylogenic descriptions which frequently failed to discuss unifying characteristics within families. Later sections, including locomotion, water balance, and mate selection are well written. This book would benefit from a glossary, more relevant tables and figures, and a more inclusive index. Overall, editing is rather sketchy.
Best of what's available.......1998-10-22
Despite some fairly serious errors and omissions, this book is the best academic treatment of the field of herpetology yet written. It is a multi-authored text which allows people to write on what they know best, rather than making authors stretch well beyond their fields of expertise. This unfortunately means there's a lot of repetition between chapters, and some flat-out contradictions. It does a fairly good of reviewing the literature in a number of sub-fields of herpetology, and so provides more up-to-date reviews than you're likely to find in "Biology of the Reptilia". It is a good choice for a herpetology course for undergraduates--in fact I plan to use it for such a course in summer 1999. Amazing omissions: dinosaurs!! birds!! biogeography!! Notable inclusions: good chapters on foraging ecology, classification (too short), & thermoregulation.
Book Description
This outstanding clinical reference provides valuable insights into solving clinical dilemmas, formulating diagnoses, developing therapeutic plans, and verifying drug dosages for both reptiles and amphibians. The information is outlined in an easy-to-use format for quick access that is essential for emergency and clinical situations.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for serious Keepers and Breeders.......2007-10-01
Simply put, I am still in awe over the amount of information in this book. This is a MUST have for any reptile Vet, and anyone who is serious about keeping or breeding reptiles. Do not let the cost put you off. The info inside is worth much, much, more than they ask.
Bible on reptile medicine.......2007-02-16
Very comprehensive, much better than 1st edition. Recommend to anyone seeing reptiles in practice.
Don't wait .......2007-01-09
It is over a hundred dollars but put it off this is the book. You won't need any others.
Best in the market.......2006-02-21
Its definitely one of the best books on reptile surgery in the market if you're into real herping
Excellent Reference for anyone with a reptile/amphibian collection.......2005-11-07
I have a small reptile collection from which I refer to this book exclusively if any of the herps get sick or appear to be ill. Not all veterinarians know about reptile medicine and surgery so this is a great book for veterinarians broadening their field in animal medicine as well as, those of us who love reptiles. Mader also expresses to veterinarians cost for reptile patients (10% more than for dogs and cats, Dr. Mader states). The photos are in black and white with heavy duty pages that have photos and information based on every order of reptiles and amphibians with basic information about care requirements and do's and don'ts. I highly recommend this book for beginners to advanced collectors as well as, graduate students in veterinary medicine to include veterinarians. It is highly recommended that veterinarians increase their market to herps because herp sales will increase to 400% in the next 2 years.

An excellent, easy to use book that is well laid out with good illustrations. Ron
This is still the Galápagos guide you want - this 2nd edition is even better than the 1st!.......2005-11-09
Original review of 1st Edition, November 9, 2005
This is the Galápagos guide you want!
Andy Swash (photographer) and Rob Still (computer design wizard) have conspired to produce the handiest and most authoritative guide to the wildlife of these enchanted islands. They have pioneered the use of computer enhanced photographs, which combine the advantage of a photograph as an accurate record of an individual, with the artists ability to stress those features that are representative of the species. In one pocket-sized, 168 page, full-colour photographic guide you have all you need to identify almost all of the archipelago's wildlife including every living species of bird, mammal and reptile.
And since WILDGuides are a non-profit organisation which supports conservation throughout the world, you are helping ensure that the wildlife you enjoy today will still be there for others to enjoy tomorrow. Check out their other titles, all of which share the enhanced photography approach.
The prefect guide for the curious visitor and expert alike. Look no further!

Comments on 2nd Edition, September 5, 2006
This second edition (white cover) differs from the first (blue cover - see review above) as follows:-
* it includes new species for the islands, such as Green Heron and Grey-headed Gull
* all range maps have been revised and updated
* the cetaceans section has been completely revamped
* a new section on "electronic media" is provided
* the species checklist has been brought right up-to-date
The guide remains the top recommendation for wildlife observation on the islands and WILDGuides are still a non-profit organisation with an impressive record of donations to conservation.
One of the best books we bought for our trip.......2005-10-26
We bought this book as one of 5 guides to the Galapagos which we took with us on our trip in Oct 05. It was really excellent, so good in fact, that our wonderful naturalist guide asked if we could send him a copy. I just gave him ours and now I have to order it again for us! It's organized by type of animal and bird, which makes it easier for novices to experienced wildlife observers alike to identify animals and birds. It has a nice sturdy format also, which is good for taking along onto the islands.
I highly recommend this book!
An Identification Guide to the Birds, mammals, and Reptiles of the Galapagos Islands.......2005-10-22
It is very informative for visitors to the islands and probably be able to recognize some of the birds etc when you see them.Yet to proof it during my next visit to the island in December 2005.
Galapagos Animals Etc........2005-09-01
I believe this book will help me a great deal when I travel to the Galapagos Island next week.

Customer Reviews:
great herp book!.......2007-08-04
It is a great herp book, with lots of information. But i guess there are newer version of it on the market...
Still Missing Some Details and Organization (otherwise very good).......2007-02-21
This is generally a VERY good book! Still, given minimal initial knowledge of Herpetology, the book can be somewhat ambiguous and disorganized and is missing a few essential details such as habitat and food for families of reptiles and amphibians in the necessary chapters. It requires more photographs and better taxonomic organization for clarity.
Educational.......2005-02-22
This book covers everything from the basics of herps, to the more advance steps in classification, breeding, and observing. In the most case this book is not a good reference guide for those with a minor understanding of the biology of reptiles, however, for those who know the basics, and are interested enough to continue their learning experiance on an advnaced level, this book is a must. Used in colleges as college text, anyone in the herpetological field in college needs this book!
Great Book.......2001-03-25
This book is for expierienced herpers only .It has almost evrything you need to know.If you are interested in learning more about herps.I give this a 5 if you are a expiereienced reader.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive - read BEFORE buying your Iggy.......2007-08-26
First-rate coverage of the whys & wherefores of raising iguanas, especially the Green Iguana. It would be a good idea to read the first few chapters before buying to get a feel for the Iguana "lifestyle".
Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual.......2007-06-28
As the subtitle says, this is the "ultimate owner's manual." It is comprehensive book, with detailed and specific information, punctuated by anecdotes from iguana owners. Because the iguana is a difficult pet to maintain, with specific environmental and dietary requirements, this book is essential to the iguana owner.
A must have for all Iguana owners, or Wanna be's.......2007-03-23
This book has it all. Everything you need to know about your pet. The photos are beautiful, and the written word is concise and easily understood. The authors passion for Iguanas is obvious, and his knowledge on the subject vast. It may seem expensive and perhaps you wonder if you need so much information, but if you have an Iguana you owe it to yourself to understand this unusual reptiles behavior, habits and special needs. After reading this book, I became more aware of my Jacks special place on this planet.
Exhaustively researched and still a good read........2007-02-23
This book has helped me a great deal in giving both my pet iguanas excellent care. It covers all the ranges of care from designing or a habitat or what to look for in a preexisting one, as well as proper health care and nutrition. It even explains how to identify the country of orgin based on coloring and body type. It teaches responsibility and actually discourages getting an iguana if the would be owner thinks it is an easy to care for pet. All in all its one of the best pieces of nonfiction i have read and it full of easy to follow advice presented in a clear detailed manner.
Extremely informative and accurate.......2007-02-02
This book is the best Green iguana book I have ever read and has the best and most accurate information on large green iguanas. It is very difficult to take care of these little green guys and this book absolutely a life saver. If I only had the funds to purchase one book on iguanas, I would choose this one.

Book Description
Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry is designed to introduce veterinary practitioners to the diagnosis and treatment of disease in captive amphibians. Although designed for the veterinary clinician, this text is an essential part of any herpetologist's library, covering various aspects of amphibian captive husbandry and propagation while providing a firm foundation that enables the reader to evaluate a given husbandry routine. The diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques is discussed. Infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic disorders of amphibians are examined in detail. Fully illustrated, this volume contains 243 color pictures, 317 black and white figures, and 54 tables that enhance the usefulness of the text and will be of interest to zoos and aquariums with amphibian displays as well as to libraries.
Customer Reviews:
A must book for any enthusiasts on amphibians captive care.......2007-08-01
A must book for any enthusiasts or veterinarian. It is the first serious book on amphibians medicine. It also covers some interesting chapters on captive care and rearing.
Medical degree needed!.......2007-05-27
I bought this book when I had a sick newt on my hands and wanted to get some deeper insights as to what may be wrong. Even the vets I took my pet to were mostly unable to help much, so I tried to take matters into my own hands, at least this way when I went to the vet, I'd be able to bring some ideas and understandings to the table. Let me add that I am a science teacher, so I am no dummy with respect to scientific understanding, but my background is NOT in biology, which is what's essential in the understanding of this book. Also, the book is not meant for "lay people", such as myself, but rather veterinary or medical students. Now I see why. The book was very expensive, which I didn't mind if it had helped, and very difficult to underdstand. The book had very little information with respect to newts in general and rather focused on other amphibians such as frogs. There were very few pictures or chapters/paragraphs even devoted to newts. I wish there had been a copy of the book in a library for me to check out beforehand, as I would not have purchased the book if I did. I'm sure for a vet student the book is probably wonderful, but for someone with no biology background trying to search for some specific answers, it fell way short.
An invaluable title for veterinarians.......2001-12-13
Kevin Wright and Brent Whitaker's Amphibian Medicine And Captive Husbandry is a comprehensive, in-depth, scholarly reference manual designed to introduce and assist veterinary practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in captive amphibians. However, it also serves as an invaluable, core addition to the library of any herpetologist, breeder or pet owner of an amphibian, for it extensively covers numerous details of the care, feeding, and reproduction of captive amphibians, as well as disease diagnosis, basic clinical techniques for treatment. The many diseases discussed include sicknesses that are infectious, metabolic, nutritional, neoplastic, and idiopathic. 243 color pictures, 317 black and white pictures, and 54 tables greatly enhance the meticulous and highly precise text of this exhaustively complete reference. An invaluable title for veterinarians and/or owners of amphibians.
Comments from co-editor Dr. Kevin Wright.......2001-10-17
Hello, I am Dr. Kevin Wright, co-editor of Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry. Given the global decline of amphibian populations noted at the end of the 20th century, Dr. Whitaker and I designed Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry to introduce the diagnosis and treatment of disease in amphibians to a wide range of audiences. Although our primary intent was to provide a practical but thorough text for the veterinary clinician, we believe this book will be an essential part of any biologist's library; the topics covered range from amphibian captive husbandry and propagation to the diagnosis of disease in amphibians by the application of basic clinicopathologic techniques. Topics are arranged by etiology. The pathology section is highly detailed and provides the only overview of amphibian pathology published.
Recognizing that the understanding of veterinary medicine is facilitated by illustrations, Amphibian Medicine and Captive Husbandry includes 243 color pictures, 317 black and white figures, and 54 tables.
We highly recommend this book to any individual, institution or organization that works with captive or wild amphibians: veterinary clinicians, comparative pathologists, veterinary students, herpetologists, herpetoculturists, zoos, aquariums, biomedical research facilities, and libraries.

Book Description
Wendy Pfeffer describes the amazing metamorphosis from tiny, jellylike egg, to little fishy tadpole, to great big bullfrog. Holly Keller has created the archetypal frog pond and we see it through the seasons as the tadpoles grow legs and lungs and eventually hop onto land: bullfrogs at last. "Well-designed ink drawings washed with soft-toned watercolors stretch across the double-page spreads, showing the action above and below water level. . . .an attractive, general introduction."BL.

Did You Know Bullfrog Tadpole's Hibernate? - a review of "From Tadpole to Frog".......2007-05-14
This is a nice book with attractive artwork that describes the two-year life cycle of the American Bullfrog. As a Stage One book "From Tadpole to Frog" uses simple sentences and concepts that are appropriate for toddlers, preschoolers, and young children up to about 8 or 9 years of age.
Besides a description of the Bullfrog lifecycle, and the 'where Bullfrogs can be found' map, there are pictures with brief descriptions of 5 other frogs, including the Leopard, Pickerel, Wood, Spring Peeper, and Gray Tree frogs.
Four Stars. Good artwork on every page. The color runs from edge to edge. Okay Read-aloud. The Bullfrog is interesting as even the tadpoles hibernate for one year. Nothing objectionable in my opinion; although I should note above that there is a brief mention of reproduction. [I mention this as some parents have concerns and have told me they appreciate such notes.] The book, in any case, says the following about frog reproduction:
At night you hear "Ba-ra-rooom... ba-ra-
room... ba-ra-rooom...". The males are calling
to their mates.
The female hear the call.
The male hugs his mate. He fertilizes her eggs as
she lays them in the water. Thousands of soft
jelly-covered eggs cling together in the cool water.
The artwork shows the frogs hugging, and neither art nor wordage was inappropriate or graphic, in my opinion. Certainly my children didn't think anything of it.
The AR reading level is given as 1.6 which means this is a book for a child in the second half of the first grade. While professionally assessed, this mom thinks quite a few first graders will need some help because of the vocabulary. More difficult words include: hibernate, thousands, whistle, creatures, stretching, fertilizes, speckled, and capture. Words they might not be familiar with are: mate, female, male, breathe, gills, and cling.
Educational fun!.......2007-01-19
I highly reccommend any and all of the "lets find out" books. Excellent teaching tools which hold a child's interest.
the life of a frog.......2006-07-24
Frogs are fascinating creatures. It seems children especially develop a fondness for them. This is a book that teaches children everything they'd want to know about frogs, and more importantly about how frogs start off as tadpoles before turning into frogs. If you have a child and he or she likes playing with frogs, give them this book.
Another Great Kids' Book.......2003-03-28
This is another great STAGE 1 book in the "Let's Read & Find Out" Science Series. The STAGE 1 Series books are written for preschool and kindergarten-age kids (age 3 to 6) about basic science concepts.
This book has 32 pages of nice illustrations (artwork NOT photography) to help the words tell about the developmental stages of frogs.
Some children's books miss the fact of who their target audience is. The "Let's Read & Find Out" books consistently keep subject matter easily understood using age appropriate vocabulary and keep a child interested at the same time.
We recently bought a home science frog growing kit. This book is perfect read along material to show my five year old son what to anticipate in coming weeks.
The books are written for the reading ability of an "average" 3 year old. Older kids may very well get bored with the simple reading in this book. But, they should find the information about frogs fascinating, especially if they are participating in growing some at home or in class! Remember how much fun frog eggs and tadpoles were as a kid?
We have several books in this series and are pleased that our son enjoys them so much.

very good.......2000-04-18
This book is very appropriate for any young one learning about frogs. My nephew has learned alot from this book about where frogs come from. The pictures are real and not drawings which I like.
