Book Description

Covering 92 million acres from Virginia to Texas, the longleaf pine ecosystem was, in its prime, one of the most extensive and biologically diverse ecosystems in North America. Today these magnificent forests have declined to a fraction of their original extent, threatening such species as the gopher tortoise, the red-cockaded woodpecker, and the Venus fly-trap. Conservationists have proclaimed longleaf restoration a major goal, but has it come too late?

In Looking for Longleaf, Lawrence S. Earley explores the history of these forests and the astonishing biodiversity of the longleaf ecosystem, drawing on extensive research and telling the story through first-person travel accounts and interviews with foresters, ecologists, biologists, botanists, and landowners. For centuries, these vast grass-covered forests provided pasture for large cattle herds, in addition to serving as the world's greatest source of naval stores. They sustained the exploitative turpentine and lumber industries until nearly all of the virgin longleaf had vanished.

Looking for Longleaf demonstrates how, in the twentieth century, forest managers and ecologists struggled to understand the special demands of longleaf and to halt its overall decline. The compelling story Earley tells here offers hope that with continued human commitment, the longleaf pine might not just survive, but once again thrive.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb book on several fronts..........2007-10-16

Earley was trying to write a history of turpentining. What he ended up with was a spectacular essay on the natural history of longleaf pine forests, the human history of the forested south, an essay on conflicting views in forestry, and....oh yes...turpentine!

Reading this as an ecologist, I found everything I wanted with just enough of the human element to flesh it out without boring me. Oddly enough, I suspect those reading this from an anthropological view have the same opinion about the natural history aspect of the book. Earley is that good in weaving his tale.

It flows well, is well organized, and the research and references are stunning. Twenty-three pages of references make me wonder how he ever finished the book. (In his acknowledgements he seems to wonder the same thing himself!)

This book belongs on the shelf of every forester, ecologist, and southern historian. I'm just thankful I stumbled across it on a rainy day in Congaree National Park.

5 out of 5 stars complete book about longleaf pines.......2006-11-19

mr. earley goes deep into everything you could want to know about this native tree species,a cornerstone to both the natural world of the southeastern united states and the economic growth and development of the country as a whole.......he tells all about the past history, present day status, and projected outlook of the longleaf pine tree:it's one-time dominance of the coastal plain landscape, compared to it's present day status;all about the naval stores and timber industries, and their heavy dependence upon it that led to it's near demise and current numbers;and the changes in land management of the longleaf forest and it's various ecosystems, with much insight to the controlled burning philosophy that has gained in popularity during the last 50 years or so.....with photos, including some impressive shots of long-gone virgin growth trees dwarfing the grown men standing among them.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on longleaf yet........2005-09-08

This book is as accurate and detailed as any scholarly paper but is written so well that it is certain to be a classic of literature like Archie Carr's "The Windward Road."

5 out of 5 stars America's Rain Forest.......2004-11-23

For years I have been concerned about the disappearance of the South American Rain Forest. What was shocking from Earley's book is how we had our own expansive Forest with it's own ecosystem and let it disappear before our very eyes without anyone noticing.

It is not only a wonderfully told story of the Longleaf pine but it is a genuine history of how the South's economic development between the time of the settlers and up until today nearly destroyed it's most valuable resource and the ecology that was a part of it.

The only problem with this book was not being able to put it down after I started reading it.

            Product Description

This edited volume documents the presence and types of Nature discourse that emerge during conflicts between people over wildlife. This collection of qualitative case studies demonstrates how social groups create opposing symbolic meanings of Nature and highlights the way in which the successful imposition of those meanings affects wildlife, people generally, and management professionals. Together, the chapters illustrate the significant, untapped utility of constructionist approaches for understanding social conflict over wildlife issues and for managing natural resources in a way that acknowledges and incorporates different definitions of nature.

Readership: Individuals interested in wildlife protection and management, as well as social controversy over nature and environmental policy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Emergent Readers.......2003-06-29

This book is perfect for a new reader. The repetitive text allows a child to master sight words while reading enjoyable story. The vivid illustrations of the animals give picture clues to the new reader to help him or her figure out the unknown words. The rhyme patterns also help develop phonic skills. Perfect for kindergarten and first grade!

            1 out of 5 stars Baby got a "smack"?.......2000-07-15

Not only did my kids seem very bored by this book, but I was a little disturbed that one of the very few suggestions of activity was a mother monkey "smacking" her baby.

            2 out of 5 stars Not a favorite.......2000-05-08

There's isn't much of a story to this repetitive book. Sure, there's lots of animals in this zoo and they all 'look back' at the main character after she looks at them, but it's not enough to make it interesting. My 2 and 4 year old weren't impressed and they LOVE books.

4 out of 5 stars "Zoo Looking is a great book for Daddy reading".......2000-04-01

Every night at story time, my husband complained about the lack of Daddies in picture books. But that was before he read this book. It's a very sweet story about a father and daughter's day trip to the zoo. The rhymes are catchy and clever and the pictures draw you into the story. This book is one our little daughter asks for again and again!

5 out of 5 stars Tour Guide with an Artistic Flare.......2007-06-17

This book was a pleasant surprise, with the artwork alone being worth the purchase! My husband and I are planning a trip to PARIS in August, and are learning all we can that will make it enjoyable. I thought in the stack of books I already had on Paris that I had a map of the neighborhoods called "arrondissements" but couldn't find ANY until I opened Jill's "Wandering Paris" which had just arrived. I found a very colorful map of the arrondissements right in front! It got better from there. I want to swim while in Paris although my husband, who was there for a week in 2000, said there aren't any places to swim. Well, Jill points out that "Public swimming pools are abundant in Paris, and some are exceptional." She writes that you can even "Go to the beach along the Seine." ... "you'll find sand, palm trees, umbrellas, rollerblading, bikes and Pétanque plus a swimming pool..." In his defense, he was there in DECEMBER! ha! We're also learning FRENCH, and Jill provides an abundance of vocabulary words WITH a pronunciation guide for each. For the night life, we had no idea that Friday is "Friday Night Skate", "rollerblading by night on escorted journeys through the city". We can't take all of our books with us on this trip, but Jill Butler's "Wandering Paris" is going with us for sure! [We're going to buy her other book as well! 4 out of 5 stars Novel Look at Travel to Paris.......2006-11-12

Wandering Paris is a travel guide and much more. It is a whimsical look at traveling in Paris. In addition to the solid information it provides, it also offers wonderful insights into the world that is Paris. And, the author provides you with a delightful, artful look at the Paris scene. Her illustrations add whimsy and color to the guide. This is not a heavy tome that drones on about the city of Paris but a light and refreshing approach to Paris from someone who wants to share her love of the city with you. A definite addition to any travel library.

5 out of 5 stars Is It Fair To Review My Own Book?.......2006-01-24

I wrote Wandering Paris because it's the way I like to travel. My experience of sharing the book has been very rewarding. Mostly people say "It makes me want to go to Paris". With time and distance of it's creation, it does the same thing to me. Bon Voyage!

                  5 out of 5 stars I wish I'd known . . ........2005-12-12

This charming book reminds us that a great part of the joy of Paris is found by taking time to wander. It's of great value to reorient those of us who no longer know the city as well as we did when we and it were younger.

In her illustrations, Jill translates the austere grandeur of Paris into colorful, intimate depictions of local detail, taken from the very real places she writes about.

I wish I'd read Wandering Paris before my last trip to Paris, from London, on the Eurostar, just for Sunday afternoon, just to remind myself. I'd have gone to the Sunday market, instead of taking an earlier train home.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Mother of Two.......2005-11-07

My Grade 4 daughter had to make a model of Marco Polo's ship. I am not a very artistic person and had no idea at all what we should do. We went to the library and borrowed this book as a reference. We modified the viking ship described and produced a beautiful ship. This is a very good book to be kept at home as a reference. There are all kinds of project ideas - From viking ships to egypt shadufs. It is helpful to students of all grades.
