Book Description

“This honest man, this good man, this man who never did wrong to anyone, who devoted his life to the public good, and who was one of the greatest writers in Algeria, has been murdered. . . . Not by accident, not by mistake, but called by his name and killed with preference.” So wrote Germaine Tillion in Le Monde shortly after Mouloud Feraoun’s assassination by a right wing French terrorist group, the Organisation Armée Secrète, just three days before the official cease-fire ended Algeria’s eight-year battle for independence from France.

However, not even the gunmen of the OAS could prevent Feraoun’s journal from being published. Journal, 1955–1962 appeared posthumously in French in 1962 and remains the single most important account of everyday life in Algeria during decolonization.

Feraoun was one of Algeria’s leading writers. He was a friend of Albert Camus, Emmanuel Roblès, Pierre Bourdieu, and other French and North African intellectuals. A committed teacher, he had dedicated his life to preparing Algeria’s youth for a better future. As a Muslim and Kabyle writer, his reflections on the war in Algeria afford penetrating insights into the nuances of Algerian nationalism, as well as into complex aspects of intellectual, colonial, and national identity. Feraoun’s Journal captures the heartbreak of a writer profoundly aware of the social and political turmoil of the time. This classic account, now available in English, should be read by anyone interested in the history of European colonialism and the tragedies of contemporary Algeria.

3 out of 5 stars Appropriate reading at a time like this.......2001-12-07

First, I will comment on the book itself from an American point of view. The book is not easy to read because it is not a book: it is the author's journal he kept during the French Algerian War. Knowing that still, his journal entries, which at the beginning were frequent and detailed, were focused on keeping track of who was killed, tortured or who was doing the killings. It was as if the author, Mr. F.(his notation of using people's initials to hide their identity from I suppose the French secret police), was keeping a testimony of the murders occurring all around him as evidence. This makes for dull reading; however, given the events of 9-11, I made a valiant effort to immerse myself into the author's mind and try to understand this incredibly brutal civil war.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading On Algeria For English Reader.......2001-07-20

There are a few important works on the Algerian Civil War available for the English reader. Franz Fannon, Alistair Horne's history, the film "Battle of Algiers, and recently Feraoun's diary are the ones that readily come to mind. Feraoun was a western educated Algerian and well accquainted with the French. His desire for an independent Algeria was strong, but tempered by a strong sense of historical reality. He reveals the day to day impact of the violence. It is in this respect that the work is most moving, and reveals the senselessness and degradation that occurs to all people involved, Feraoun eventually a victim himself. An essential view of the psychological costs of guerrilla and anti-colonial war.

5 out of 5 stars Seminary at 100 - Great Compilation.......2003-04-01

The Seminary at 100 is a book published on the occasion of the Jewish Theological Seminary reaching its 100th anniversary. Since its founding as a rabbinical school, JTS has greatly expanded its mission, created a beautiful Manhattan campus and evolved into the prestigious center of Jewish learning it is today. A Jewish university with a world-class faculty and a diverse student body, JTS grants undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees through its five schools and offers enriching programs for the Jewish community in the US, Israel and around the world.

This book is a compilation of essays on topics from the sociological changes in Conservative rabbis in the 1980s compared to a century prior to the Conservative Jewish Ramah camps. The essay authors each bring their knowledge of Conservative Judaism and the Seminary. This is a wonderful reference book on Conservative Judaism as well. It covers all areas of discourse (history, literature, philosophy, Talmud, Bible, and Education) studied at JTS.

The Seminary at 100 is also one of the few published works that attempts to define Conservative Jewish theology, exploring the struggle toward self definition in a movement that often sees itself in terms of the negative (neither X nor Y). Published only a few years after the monumental decision to allow women to be accepted into academic programs leading to rabbinic and cantorial degrees, this book is also a valuable source of information on the Seminary's response to feminism. Over fifteen years since its publishing, it is also quite interesting to read about the Seminary's outlook for the future determining the accuracy of these prophecies. I have no reservations in recommending this book to anyone with even a cursory interest in Conservative Judaism, the Jewish Theological Seminary, liberal rabbinic training, or modern Judaism and American Jewish history in general.

        Book Description

Jack Wolf's poems are products of a life rich in experiences of war, love and renunciation, amid many of the world's diverse seasons and horizons. He has studied the old and new masters, especially those of his twentieth century, then expressed his own unique poetic voice. His rare lyrical gift, and his ability to paint simple and complex pictures with words, suggest his other great talent: to paint with brushes. -- John K. Cooley, American foreign correspondent and author. Wolf's poetry samples the dreams of a young boy, the ever changing scenes of maturity, and the realizations of our later years. Each is a fresh and entertaining look at the times of our lives. -- Harry L. Sandberg, Retired Research Director from McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft Company. Getting to know Jack "The Professor" was like finding a hidden treasure of talent, wit, and wisdom. A great storyteller, when he puts his thoughts into verse, he takes you from the peaceful countryside into quiet suburbia and into the bustling cities. What an incredible journey! -- Alan Ramsay, bass guitarist with Joey T and The Formula band. This book, Reflections on the Golden River -- A jewel. Precisely cut. Finely set. -- SilverStar, Cherokee Nation.

5 out of 5 stars POETRY AT ITS BEST.......2005-09-08

What a pleasure it has been to delve into the lyrical poems in this little book!! Like the notes in the best of music, every word sings and enriches as it contributes to the whole composition. In addition, these words stretch my mind and arouse my emotions as they offer experiences, thoughts and insights from the author's indepth studies and worldwide travels. For short moments of pure enjoyment and longterm thoughts to take with you I highly recommend "Reflections on the Golden River".

        Book Description

Long after their eradication from almost all parts of the US, wolves still evoke a primal response, firing the imagination with admiration, awe, and dread. Efforts to restore them to Yellowstone, North Carolina, and elsewhere have provoked heated public debate and met with only mixed success. Scientists and policymakers are debating the merits of returning the wolf to the northeastern US, where the forests of northern New England and upstate New York may provide the range and resources necessary to support them. This book brings together four thoughtful and literate observers of the natural world to reflect on the implications and potential of such an effort.

Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature, encourages a skeptical look at our own motivations in this restorative effort, even as he argues that the psychological and spiritual benefits to humans would be at least as great as the ecological benefits of restoration. John Theberge, a scientist with years of experience in tracking the Canadian wolf population, notes that issues of restoration and "return" are far more complex from a biological and ecological point of view than much of the debate would suggest. Kristin DeBoer, director of the wolf restoration project of the environmental group RESTORE: The North Woods, reviews the state of the political debates, while also offering a personal account of her own motivations and goals in this work. Finally, novelist and nature writer Rick Bass brings the experiences of his home state of Montana to bear on the debate in the northeast.

        5 out of 5 stars Helping wolves.......2002-02-05

I believe this is a cause for restoration. This book made me believe that the wolf should be released in to the Adriondack mountians. It also had me believing that the ecosystem needs the wolves to survive. I was especially fascinated by Kristen Deboer's idea of creating corridors between parks in Canada ans the northeast, to help creat migratrion routes for animals. I believet he book itself aswell was ans informative, great, intertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars Wol Restoration in the east.......2001-03-29

The Return of the Wolf is an eye-opener as it gives four very distinct and honest evaluations of the possibility of our northeastern forest communities welcoming the timber wolf back to it's native haunts. Let us not confuse the eastern coyote which has hybridized with the eastern wolf as the as the easts top canid predator.....The wolf, just as in Yellowstone and Minnesota is the true predator of the moose , Caribou Elk and Beaver. The coyote, even if hybridized with wolf genes is still not a large enough creature(maximum of 70 pounds whereas the true timber wolf can be 100-150 pounds)to bring down the northeasts growing moose population and hopefully one day a restored caribou herd. Let the voice of Rick Bass,Kristen DeBoer and Bill McKibben weigh heavy.......let us set aside the lands, educate the "Little Red Riding Hood" believers and politic effectively with the state house representatives who tend to buckle to the pressure of corporations who favor short term extraction versus long term sustainability. Give the wolves the chance to push the coyotes to their rightful "fringe" of the forest allowing the true timber wolf and restored(hopefully) Cougar to stand atop the food chain as top predators of the land. Our forests have returned after 400 years of being chopped and burned.Let us stop the shopping malls and second home developments from destroying our wonderful open lands.Let the land be restored to it's glory and allow the current residents of the backwoods to continue their sustainable forestry and wsoodcraft busines while reaping some benefits from a contrulled and managed Ecotourism. What a great thing for us to have the pomeans and will to return and restore our woodlands in the most populated part of the U.S. to their former majesty. We can be a model for the conservative western United States and the emerging 3rd world countries to emulate......The Return of the Wolf speaks of all of these things and more........Fantastic writing! Rivals Charles Little storytelling in the "Dying of the trees". Please pass on to a friend.......Let the restoration of the north woods begin!

3 out of 5 stars Valuable Tourist Guide, but not completely reliable.......2005-09-07

I've been waffling over whether or not to review Frommer's Sweden (4th edition; April 2005), since I didn't actually go everywhere in Sweden that Frommer covered. But I feel compelled to point out some of the shortcomings I experienced in this book. First, while I understand that information is subject to rapid change, we should assume some of it remains stable: like the location of hotels. After exiting the tunnelbana, we followed Frommer's map to find our hotel. I became alarmed when we passed another hotel which, according to Frommer's map, should not have been anywhere near where it was. But it did prepare me to reach the x marking our spot to find out that our hotel was nowhere to be found. Fortunately I had the street address on our confirmation, because the hotel turned out to be in the opposite direction and less than a block away from our arrival point. Nor was this the book's only failing...and I might not have known that if we were not in Sweden visiting a native. The book's guide to customs on tipping was incorrect. The number they provide for emergencies in "Fast Facts: Sweden" (p. 51) (equivalent to 911 in the US) has been out of date since 1996. (Frommers does, oddly, give the correct number in some other sections.) The Stockholm Waterfestival they list for August has not been held since, as near as I can determine, the late 90s.

I don't mean to suggest the book is worthless. We did get a lot of value out of it, in both Stockholm and Visby. But I want to strongly caution those who wish to use this book to be prepared to adjust if they encounter these errors or others of which I am unaware. And, in an emergency, dial 112.

                      Book Description

In the 1920s America yearned for a hero. They had great baseball players and actors, but they longed for a seminal achievement — authentically heroic in its defiance of the odds. The Lone Eagle delivered, and the public treated him like a hero from a fairy tale, with rewards of wealth, fame, and a princess in marriage. But domestic tragedy followed. And so, in this wonderful concise biography, Walter Hixson has shown how "Lucky Lindy" exemplifies the triumphs and tragedies of America's coming of age.

This is part of Longman's series of American Biography. They are short, with a reading level set for high school students in American History. It is a little surprising to me that the average high school student doesn't know Lindbergh. To those of us born before World War II, he was a famous person. But then again, his famous flight across the Atlantic was as far away to the modern high schooler as the Spanish-American war was to my generation.

Mr. Hixson does an excellent job of describing Lindbergh's early flying of the mail, the solo flight across the atlantic and his personal life. Of particular concern to today's student was Lindbergh's attitude towards World War II.

Lindbergh was a prominent member of the American First group that strenuously wanted to keep America out of the war. He was strongly condemned. I particularly liked Lindbergh's comment: 'I have always believed that every American cieizen had the right and duty to state his opinion in peace and to fight for his country in war.' Lindbergh was not in the military, but did serve as an aviation consultant in the South Pacific. He flew missions against the Japanese and developed new techniques to extend the range of American fighters, particularly the P-38.

It is my understanding tha this series is marketed to the post adolescent teen market and widely sold to libraries.
For such purposes, and for the mildly curious, this length volume is adequate.

From the tone of the book description abovw, this may be in the nature of a hagiography. Best if it offends both right and left for the truth is most often in the middle.

The national acclaim for Lindbergh that swept the country in the twenties and later was on the order of the hysterical acclaim given the Beatles in later years. Having been mildly aware of the former, as an adult observoe of the latter, I certainly know more of the latter.

Growing up in the forties and being constantly reminded in my consciousness of the all surrounding atmosphere of World War Two, I was not aware of any other state of existence. The depression was not a memory for me at all for my family had managed to hang on in the lower middle class throughout the Great Depression which was never a dinner table subject even when Grandad came over on Sunday. The only result of the Great Depression on me is that I am ten years younger thsn I would have been if my parents had married soon after they first met. :)But the thirties were the days of dismissing of married female teachers, and mother had had to pay off her father's debts. Dad still had to live at home and scraped by on even less.

But though the depression was not in my childhood perceptions Lindbergh was. In that period of my life, I just knew he was famed for his flight. He was a national hero, the Boy Scouts published a book "The Lone Scout in the Sky: The Story of Charles A. Lindbergh" by James E.West, which remained in their catalog for many years. (West was the long time chief executive of the national BSA and was resonsible for shaping it through the forties.)

Lindbergh's writings and those of his equally famous and publically beloved aviatrix wife, Ann Morrow, sold widely in the thirties. The tragedy of their baby's kidnapping and murder cemented the national affection for him. When I first became aware of him, his grest flight was the only subject I knew.

Later on, I learned of the kidnapping and by the late fifties I had become aware of the political controversies about his actions in the late thirties with the America First isolationist movement and his open admiration of the German Luftwaffe,
Because of these activities he was not favored by President Roosevelt, and thus, though he was a reserve colonel he was never mobilized after Pearl Harbor. Lindbergh did manage to get to the Pacific area as a civilian technical consultant and flew several combat missions against the Japanese. From then on he just faded away, I have no recollection of him or even when he died.

Thus Chsrles A. Lindbergh has joined the American pantheon of heroes who many aew aware of and consider to be worthy of praise but haven't a clue as to why. Not totally forgotten, he is now and then still commemorated. In the last twenty years or so there has been a Lindbergh drive next the Montgomery County Airpark near Gaithersburg, Md, but most would not know who he was.
So such works are useful if not definitive.

Lindbergh (CAL)in a then fashionable flamboyant, flowery exuberant style using aphorisms, cliches, apocryphal phraseology bespeaking a satisfied gaiety of now long lost swank pageantry style befitting historicists and their brooded historicisms -- to wit: when a bath for the tired 'Flying Viking' was drawn, "Now the water in the tub was splashing gaily...", and in his flight of May 20-21, 1927 from NY to Paris, upon encountering sleet, -- "The Talons of the White Death."

Style aside, the story is well written for the younger reader, patently composed in dwarfish chapters furnishing generic prolixity, and provides the essence of passionate and spunky welcoming granted Captain Charles A. Lindbergh on finalization of his transatlantic flight of 1927 to also harvest the Raymond Orteig $25,000 prize for this victory.

His French, Belgian, English and US welcomings and receptions were lavishly described, along with named dignitaries and their stations, speech extracts, ribbons and medallions awarded, and replete with CALS intimate thoughts of his Mother and comrades. Moreover, the book also furnishes an overview of ancient to modern land and water travel methods, achieving air travel after the Wright brothers, and finally a look to the future of aviation.

It is a pleasant entertaining read that has ample photographs to reveal the then stylish traditional clothing CAL had to procure (borrowings were frumpy) and his difficulty in finding proper-sized shoes. Much is made of his Swedish and Irish roots, leading to his success (of course), his closeness to his Mother, and his humbleness and gratitude in recognition of the acclaim he received.

                                      Book Description

Internet and email have changed the way today's designers must view traditional letterheads, which, to the surprise of some industry experts, have become more important than ever. As more and more business is being done electronically, an even greater emphasis must be placed on letterhead, business cards, and folder design to ensure that they are in tune with the look and feel of a company's website. This can get tricky, as creating a design that looks good in print (300 dpi) as well as on the web (72 dpi) is not always the easiest task to accomplish. But in Clio award-winning designer David E. Carter's comprehensive resource, readers will discover how to create stunning designs and letterheads that work well on both the printed and the digital page. The Big Book of Designs for Letterheads and Web Sites displays literally hundreds of examples that help designers recognize the parameters of print and web letterhead design, where they work together seamlessly, and where some creative integration must be done. This valuable resource makes it clear that the web revolution has not rendered print communications obsolete but has, in effect, made the design and letterhead on print communications even more important when conveying a company's message and keeping it consistent.

4 out of 5 stars Tasteful VS non-tasteful.......2002-04-26

I like this book better then American Corporate Identity 2002. I think it offers more - it is not only bigger but seams to be more diverse, which I suppose contradicts a bit to the title.

It has an index over clients and design firms at the end, other then that the whole book is full of designs.
Looking at the inside I think it offers more complete graphic solutions, it has very little text about the design; just who has done it and for whom (therefor I rate it 4 out of 5, instead of 5, some would want to know more about the thoughts behind the design, see more of the whole).

Other then that I think it is a great book that you as a designer could use not only for your own inspiration but for the customer as well, to get some ideas about what their competitors are showing and so on. Since it shows a lot of different designs for both print and web it works as a good reference when you want to make sure you are not creating a design for a company that is allready in use by another, as well.
