Customer Reviews:
Good book for kindergarten.......2002-11-26
My 6 yr old is in kindergarten and this book was a little bit of a challenge, but very readable because of repitition and rhyming.
Book Description
Count to ten with the most adorable animals illustrated by Garth Williams! Start with one roly-poly puppy and end with ten nuts from Little Squirrel. The rhythmic text and charming pictures makes counting as easy as 1, 2, 3. . .
Customer Reviews:
Sweet and engaging.......2007-06-19
The pictures are really engaging, ss with most books illustrated by Garth Williams.
The book counts from 1 to 10, so is suitable for the younger child/toddler. The rhymes for each number are really sweet.
A must have!.......2006-11-14
I was cautious at first, but this book is such a treasure! Great teaching aide, made easy for children to learn. Adorable illustrations.
My one and a half yr. old loves it. This is the best counting book!!!
The Best in Counting!.......2004-11-23
I love this book - so does my little one. It was my favorite as a child and when I saw it in a store, I didn't even think about it. I just grabbed it and ran! It does an excellent job of teaching little ones their numbers and number recognition. It also has them count each thing that appears in the illustrations. The pictures are just darling and very life-like as well. You have to buy this book - it's really that good.
The best counting book ever!.......2002-08-07
This book is wonderful! The pictures are very colorful and peaceful to look at. Just as important, the flow and rhythm of the book is amazingly catching. I have had the entire book memorized for years, and that is without even trying.
I loved the book at 5, and I still love it at 27. I had this book as a kid, and I give it to all my friends who have children.
If you know someone who is learning to count, or someone who is a child at heart, this is the perfect book for them!
Grew up loving this book!.......2001-07-04
My dad read this book to my sister and I when we were small. We loved it more than any other book out there! The rhymes and illustrations were superior. We all still remember each and every number and group of animals associated with the number. My sister has given this book as a baby gift for years, and now that she is having a baby of her own, she is planning on having the nursery designed with the adorable animals! It is a must read and really helps little kids enjoy both math and reading throughout life!!!

Book Description
A cheerfully chaotic spin on a counting book, featuring a very large family
From mealtime to bathtime to bedtime, ordinary activities become extraordinary when you live with twenty-seven owls, eleven dogs, six goldfish, a carsick gerbil, and numerous other furry, feathery, and finned friends. Jaunty text, wonderfully ridiculous illustrations, and plenty of counting challenges make this extraordinary household worth repeat visits.
Customer Reviews:
Oh, Let Me Count the Ways that This Book Is a Pleasure to Read...There Must be 93, At Least!.......2007-01-05
This is a zany story told in lively verse style with descriptive language and totally wonderful illustrations that kids will just eat up...and the story is a hoot too, literally with 27 owls, 10 cats, 11 dogs, that gerbil that's ALWAYS doing something interesting...and sooooooo much more! I didn't know when I picked this up at our local library that it was a math opportunity disguised as a cute kid's tale...but it rather is. Ninety-Three in My Family isn't just a litany of counting animals either...there is a lot of humor here, like the times the WHOLE family goes on a car trip..."I'll tell you, it gets crowded/When we get in the car./And Mom and Dad get cranky/If we have to drive too far!" I would too if I had flamingos with their heads out the window and a squirrel on my head (which makes the dad sneeze by the way)...and the expression on the faces of the people they are driving past...beautifully done!
I give Ninety-Three in My Family five stars, it's a whirlwind look at one very large family that also affords a visual feast through its illustrations and the added math dimension was quite nice, as this book goes beyond the opportunity to count from one to ten and lets your child try out 10, 11, 27 and many more!! There are PLENTY of opportunities to count all the animals and if you didn't find them all in the story pages, at the end there is a two page spread devoted to a black board representation of the who shebang laid out nicely!
For the animal-lover in your family.......2006-12-02
Do you know a child who likes a tall tale? Or a child who loves animals and is constantly begging for just one more pet? Then "Ninety-Three in My Family" is for you!
"Ninety-Three in My Family," written by Erica S. Perl and illustrated by Mike Lester, begins in the classroom. Today's topic? Our Families. The unflappable teacher asks the young narrator, "'How many live with you?'" And he answers, "I counted quickly in my head. I told her, 'Ninety-two.'"
Why ninety-two? Well here's the narrator's rundown:
"There's twenty-seven owls,
Ten cats, eleven dogs,
A pygmy hippo named Bernice,
And eight blue speckled frogs.
My mommy and my daddy,
My sister's gerbil, Ed,
Six goldfish and my sisters,
Darlene and Winifred.
Whenever people ask me
How many live with me,
I tell them true, there's ninety-two.
Plus one (that's me!), we're ninety-three."
Told in lively verse, "Ninety-Three in My Family" makes for a truly fun read-aloud. Mike Lester's illustrations are dynamic and, needless to say, packed with animals. The owls, with their grumpy faces, are particularly (dare I say it?) cute. Each colorful page has plenty to look at and look for. The book concludes with a surprise certain to delight the young reader.
"Ninety-Three in My Family" is highly recommended fun for children ages three to ten.
Count those critters!.......2006-11-01
We had a lot of pets growing up. A dog, gerbils, tropical fish of every stripe and variety. But that ain't nuthin. When the boy in this story is asked how many are in his family, he mentally adds up all the owls, gophers, lions, flamingoes, llamas, and, oh, I forget how many pets.
Honestly, who can keep track? But it's fun trying. My son instantly ripped this from my mitts and has been scouring the book for all its hoofed, pawed, clawed, finned and feathered characters.
Sure, most preschoolers already love counting, but even if they didn't, Perl slyly sneaks it all in with rolicking verses that careen from kitchen to car to bathtub and even the bed, mounded high with sleepy critters.
Lester hand-sketched everything then digitally colored it, but it perfectly imitates the splotchy, impromptu feel of watercolors that just shouts "zany!"
Nothing kills incentive like telling kids math is hard, but you'd never know it here, where you'll be hunting for that poor, carsick gerbil or making sure you've spotted all the tigers (wait, they're not spotted, they're striped. Hah!)
The boy's teacher finally lists them all on the blackboard, and you may be amazed at what you missed.
I want to hire this team to make broccoli taste like cupcakes. I bet they could do it too.
ERICA PERL DOES IT AGAIN!!.......2006-10-02
ERICA PERL has a delightful command of lyrical and comic language, spritely and totally engaging. She never talks down to her readers and keeps us giggling no matter how many times we've read her books. The illustrations in this book are particularly quirky and imaginative. It's a fabulous book and Erica Perl is already taking her place among the truly innovative and gifted writers for children.
they love it!.......2006-09-28
My kids were big fans of Chicken Bedtime (they still crack up over "the hamsters...what hours they keep") and Ninety-Three in My Family is another hit! Hooray for the lyrical, comical illustrations, matching the fun-to-read text. Congratulations to the team!

Book Description
In both Spanish and English, two tiny mice express their love in big terms. On a walk together, the mice learn that their love is bigger than 1 bear, taller than 2 giraffes, larger than 3 blue whales. As they count from 1 to 10, the mice discover that their love is greater than anything they can imagine. Siempre. Forever.
Charming collage illustrations and pages sturdy enough for even the littlest hands make this counting story ideal for sharing.
Customer Reviews:
Sweet story, good vocabulary and counting.......2004-12-05
My husband, a former teacher, loves this story because it has repetition, which is good as children start having an interest in reading. It also teaches animals and counting..."mi amor por ti es mas grande que 1 oso" (my love for you is bigger than one bear) and "mas alto que 2 jirafas" (taller than 2 giraffes) etc. Because the book is in English AND Spanish, my husband is learning too, since he does not speak Spanish.
In addition to the educational aspects, the book is a sweet story letting the parent tell the baby how much the parent loves her child culminating with a love that is "mas grande que todas estas cosas juntas...para siempre "greater than all of these together...forever".
We LOVE it!!

Roth's bright, cheerful collage illustrations combined with durable board book pages and safe, rounded edges make the book perfect for sharing with even the youngest readers.
Customer Reviews:
sweet but not sacharine.......2005-08-10
This is along the same lines as "Guess How Much I Love You". However, it not only gives you a way to express the depth of your love but gives children a chance to count the numbers one to 10. I've already got a lot of counting books but I'll probably add this one to our library. It's sweet without being too sappy.
Simply sweet.......2000-12-02
Agreed! This is my 21-month-old son's favorite of all his many books. Every morning he toddles into my bedroom with it and holds it out to me saying, "Luv fa you?"
If that's not the best recommendation in the world, what is?
A must-have book for the parent of a toddler.......2000-04-13
My 2 year son loves this book. Every night we read it twice when he gets in bed. He even insists on sleeping with it. I can hear him laying there looking at the colorful pictures reading it to himself. The most wonderful part is the ending - after listing ten animals it ends with [my love for you is...] "greater than all of these together forever". A wonderfully sweet book.

Great for Beginning Readers.......2007-05-14
My five-year-old daughter loves this book, especially since she can read most of the words herself. With its counting, pretty illustrations, and easy-to-read pages, this is the perfect book (especially for girls) for those beginning to read.

A Very Simple Book for the Toddler Crowd.......2007-01-24
This book is a very simple board book to be read to 2 year olds and under. It has one sentence per page and 1 pony at a time disappears when you turn the page. The little plastic ponies do not come out of the book or make any cute sounds like I wish that they would. A determined toddler might be about to pry the ponies off their cardboard pages, which could make them a choke hazard.

A joy to page through while reading aloud its verses to children.......2007-09-06
"Hopscotch Magazine" writer Valarie Giogas presents In My Backyard, a rhyming children's counting picturebook that, in addition to teaching young readers the numbers one through ten, also instructs them in the names of different types of baby animals that can be found in a typical backyard. "In my backyard I can see / a nest of five bunnies / twitching at me. / They've gotten through the garden gate. / Just look at all the plants they ate!" Katherine Zecca's beautifully realistic color illustrations of baby animals cute enough to snuggle make In My Backyard a joy to page through while reading aloud its verses to children, or encouraging children to read the verses themselves.
Oh dear, what a sweet story.......2007-07-18
Sylvan Dell Publishing brings In My Backyard to the lineup of great children's books released in 2007. Written by newcomer Valarie Giogas and illustrated by Katherine Zecca, this scientific adventure introduces children (and adults, admittedly) to the family names of a host of common animals found around rural and suburban homes.
The story uses a sing-song rhythm that typically delights the young reader with familiarity. It provides practice in basic counting skills from one to ten. This may be a book with a limited audience due to the strict scientific nature of the topic, but any child with an interest in animals and wildlife will find it fascinating. Akin to virtually all Sylvan Dell books, it is a teacher or home schooling parent's dream.
Also with all Sylvan Dell releases, the story is followed up by various activities and expanded teaching opportunities. In My Backyard includes a memory game that can be printed from the publisher's website, extra counting exercises, and helpful information regarding wildlife and caring for injured animals.
Katherine Zecca has written and illustrated various other animal-themed children's titles including River Song, A Puffin's Year, and Why Puppies Do That.
Armchair Interviews says: Another Sylvan Dell winner.
Backyard Treasures.......2007-07-10
Children will have fun reading this book, probably not even realizing that at the same time they are learning about the animals they can see close by their homes. They will also have fun counting the baby animals. In My Backyard presents ten different animals in their backyard habitat. Author Valerie Giogas uses rhyming and some alliteration in her pleasurable and informative text.
Katherine Zecca's illustrations entrance the eye not only with lifelike renderings of the animals up close, but also with their habitats. For instance the squirrels are snuggled in their tree trunk nest or the moles move about in their burrows. The activities in the book will keep a child or classroom busy and happy while learning. One engrossing thing a child or preschool class can do is look for the "signs" that animals leave to show they are around. What a treasure hunt that will be! Recommended for children two years through seven years.
