Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-09-16
This book is such a sweet, cute book. I am 24 years old and still read it to my nieces every once in a while. I have grown up making my parents read me this book over and over again every night and day. My copy is worn out but it also shows how much I enjoyed it. I hope you decide to buy it and read it to your children they will love it!
What a great, sweet book!.......2006-09-09
This is such a sweet little book! Probably not much past age 5, but the story has a bunny looking for a place to stay or a home of his own. He proceeds to ask everyone he meets if he can live with them and they all say no. However, when he meets a little white bunny, the bunny takes him in and they then live together. The last picture is just so sweet with the two bunnies snuggling together. The illustrations make you touch the page because the bunny looks so fuzzy! It is very much loved in our house and we highly recommend it!
home for a bunny review.......2006-03-30
I read this book 20+ years ago to my two children and it was their favorite and most requested Little Golden book. It is such a sweet and well illustrated book. My only regret is that I didn't keep it over the years because I now had to go on a search for another copy for my brand new grandchild. My new copy of "Home for a Bunny" will be extremely well used, I'm sure!
Touching & Memorable.......2005-05-22
My mother used to read this book to me when I was very small, and even twenty years later, I remember the story of the little bunny trying to find a home so vividly! This is such a sweet story, it ends happily, and it has beautiful illustrations as well. A wonderful exploration of the concept of "home." I'm looking forward to reading it to my own children one day.
Life-long favorite.......2005-04-19
My papa used to read this to me when I was a child, and then I apparently grew out of it for a while. I remember coming home from high school during finals week, exhausted. Dad saw me sigh and said, "Well, you're home for a bunny. You can relax now." Memories flooded me and we scrambled to find the book. Now, I've made it a tradition that when a family member or friend is expecting their first child, I give them a copy of this book. It's all about a little bunny(baby)coming home, isn't it? And when I was looking to buy my own first home...well, that's another story.
The writing is sweet and the illustrations charming. Highly recommended. It's a keeper, for sure.

Book Description
Set during the devastating tsunami of 2004, MAMA is the touching true story of a baby hippo that was separated from his mother when the wave hit. After struggling alone for several days, the baby was rescued by Kenyan wildlife officers and brought to live in an animal refuge. There, all by himself, he adopted a new "mother"--that just happened to be a 130-year-old giant male tortoise. And they've been inseparable ever since.
Although MAMA takes place against the backdrop of a terrible human tragedy, at the heart of this story is a moving and original tale of adoption--and of finding love and companionship in the least likely of circumstances.
Includes an author's note.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe I'm hormonal..........2007-05-20
...but every time I read this book I get teary eyed. Of course I use the word "read" loosely as there are only two words in the whole book: mama & baby.
I found this book after reading Owen and Mzee (Isabella Hatkoff) which was a short non-fiction book with photographs detailing the remarkable story of a baby hippo that lost his mom in the 2004 tsunami; he is later rescued and sent to a zoo where he is "adopted" by a giant 130 year old tortoise.
This picture book attempts to condense that incredible story in a handful of pages that are illustrated with simple and homely images using only the word "mama" to move the story line along. (There is also an author's note at the end which explains more about the true story.)
It's a pretty bold concept but I think it works. I'm still not a very big fan of the illustrations and the story is troubling but as a book it really does resonate for me and honestly I wouldn't change a thing about it. It's perfectly imperfect.
There are lots of reviewers that will argue it's a scary book thematically, but I think it's also very touching. I probably wouldn't recommend it to everyone but it's certainly one of the most moving picture books I've happened across.
I think this book may also find a welcoming home on the bookshelves of children who have themselves been misplaced from their parents and adopted by surrogates...or anyone who has tragically lost something and found it again in the unlikeliest of places.
Essentially it's a story of trauma and loss and hope and love. It's a story about life.
Sometimes Momma's are lost and baby's are placed gently in others care.......2006-11-02
To understand this book it helps to have a child placed in your classroom who has lost her momma. In my room this year is a sweet little one who lost her young momma at two. She has at 6 been placed into my hands and no day goes by that I don't feel the dissonance of realization of what this loss means for this little one. It's not easy being different than the other children, but its far worse when others cannot accept and process and care about this-preferring to "never ever speak" of such things. That's a real rejection of the experience of loss. This story is one of a baby hippo told in pictures...hippo baby goes in the world following mama, losing momma to a tsunami and then finding an old tortoise to call mama. As the journey is told through the pictures we feel the bonds of mother and child, the sadness of this tragedy, the honoring of the tragedy, the way the baby is able to go on through the disaster and be loved by another as the love of mom, our first love, is transformed into the love of a friend. This is a refugee story. In the end it is my belief we are all refugees, all searching for mother love, all looking for acceptance and love. This is a story to tell of that life journey. Absolutely poetic, absolutely charming. Children will relate, feel , learn if this is presented with love and context.....
Scary for little ones.......2006-10-19
My 1st grader said it best: "Cute pictures, but scary story!" She had tears in her eyes as she realized the Mama was gone and the baby was alone. He gets a new mama when he's rescued, but the ghostly outline of his lost mother is present on the last page. However, sometimes bad things do happen and for a parent who is interested in introducing the concept of death or losing a parent in some way, this book could be helpful. As an everyday bedtime story thought, I would say skip it. Could really worry some children.
Winter At Her Absolute Best.......2006-06-16
As a children's book librarian, I've been following Jeanette Winter's books for many years, and I have always been struck by how child-friendly they are. They are books written and illustrated for children, not for adults, and this is what makes them such welcome additions to any children's book library. With MAMA, we have the ultimate example of this. In life, even in a child's life, difficult things happen. Tsunamis happen. Hurricanes happen. Divorce happens. Rather than being told such things aren't real, children need to deal them, to process them, and in a way that provides comfort. And so it is that Winter, as a children's book author, fearlessly, and with the utmost of grace, tackles a difficult thing that really did happen, ultimately providing much hope and joy. Bravo, Ms. Winter!
A PERFECT Picture Book.......2006-06-16
This is perhaps the most beautiful and perfect picture book I have ever read. Using just two words throughout the entire text, brilliant author/illustrator Jeanette Winter conveys the most basic of all human emotions: the bond between a mother and child. This most universal of subjects is something every child will understand -- and not just understand, but feel. And with the beautiful, equally minimal illustrations depicting the big, blue ocean, this book is certain to put every child, and every parent, in a trance -- from beginning to end. And the ending is ultimately a very happy, life-affirming, love-affirming one -- that will leave most readers with a big smile tempered with tears, like the sunshine that follows, say, a tsunami.

Great Fun!.......2007-07-12
This book combines my son's favorite things: ants and trains. It was also a wonderful book for me to read out loud to him. It's my favorite children's book so far. And he loves it!!
Utterly charming.......2007-06-28
Our four-year old loves this book (as do I). The pace is quick, the pictures lively, and the rhymes quirky and intelligent. You will enjoy reading this together.
Great Read Aloud.......2007-05-25
This is one of my faves for preschool storytime reading.
The rhymes are natural, the plot is gripping and the pictures are large and humorous.
If you read to groups of preschoolers - or are doing a unit on insects at your primary school - don't miss this one.
Fun funny funky book that has a good message.......2007-04-30
We found this book in a bookstore and bought it for the train theme (our son loves trains), but keep going back because it's funny, fun to read, has tongue twisters, and is all about saving this ant from a train on the track - so it has a good message (helping those weaker than us, not hurting an ant) to boot. It's not preachy though, the message is just a perk to a fun book that has a lot to talk about with a child. But mostly it's just more "fun" and savvy than a lot of kids' books!
I Saw An Ant on the Railroad Track.......2007-04-03
THis book has become one of his favorites. The pictures and story are great for 3 yr olds.

Touch and feel home.......2005-08-18
The photos and fur on all of the animals are really cute. The book is very sturdy and made for little hands. I though my little girl would be more impressed with this book but she still prefers her Maisy and Caillou board books much better.
Shopoholic Mom to Triplets!.......2002-08-12
Okay, we have *almost* all of the "Touch and Feel" books and this is one of the favorites!! All 3 of my babies *LOVE* the teddy bear and love the lift the 'soft cotton curtain', etc. Loads of fun! Only downfall is these books just are long enough!!
Not the best.......2000-08-29
Many of the books in this series are better than this one. The selection of items and pictures is odd, and the mirror on the last page distorts baby's face like something out of a funhouse. Skip this one in the series.
Your toddler will sit still!.......2000-03-27
This series is great! This was the only thing to get my highly Kinetic child to sit still and read. The things to feel here are things that are in their own environment, and there is a wonderful 3-D component to it too. Personally I think these are heads and shoulders above the "pat the bunny" books, and so does my child.

Book Description
A little rabbit learns to love day care.
Once upon a time there was a rabbit who was afraid of going to day care. But as it happened, the rabbit's mommy and daddy both went off to work every day, so he had to go to day care. Then a new rabbit teacher arrived. She had unusually long ears-- and she was especially nice-- and every morning the rabbit got to sit on her lap. One day when he had sat there for a while, he realized he wanted to get down and play. Soon he was no longer hiding under the bed when it was time to leave in the morning!
Any child facing the challenge of going off to day care or school for the first time will immediately identify with the reluctant hero of this gentle tale. Warm, glowing pictures bring the everyday details of day care and school alive.
Customer Reviews:
This book is so depressing........2005-07-31
I thought this book was just awful. This poor little bunny wants nothing more than to be with his mommy, but she dumps him off at daycare. The book talks about how all the bunny does is sit at the window and cry every day.
Eventually a pretty teacher comes and lets him sit on his lap and he sort of begins to forget to be miserable 100% of the time. Then he gets the news that he's going to get a little brother/sister and although his mommy wouldn't stay home just for him, she'll stay home if there's another kid coming? Yeah, whatever.
The general message seems to be: your mid will be miserable but eventually he'll become numb to the misery. Not quite the message I'd want to send to my kid.

I just wanted to point out that the synopsis of this book says that McDuff is a Yorkshire. He is clearly a West Highland White Terrier ("Westie"). Whatever you call him, though, McDuff's stories are wonderful.

ASIN: 1841489255 |
Product Description
Follow Bear on a guided tour of his cozy home. Wander from the kitchen "all clean and neat" through the playroom with its "great big toy chest," and end up in the bedroom "where Bear says goodnight!"
The simple rhyme of Bear at Home promotes early language development while the bright, vivid colors appeal to the smallest child. Debbie Harter's illustrations encourage young readers to spot and identify the variety of objects to be found in specific rooms.
Customer Reviews:
My 19 month old loves this book.......2006-03-24
For the last five nights in a row since we got this book from the library, my little girl requests this book by saying "book! key!" or "bear!" before her naps and night time sleep. And when we get to the last page, she says "key!" and we go back to the beginning. Plenty of things to look for in the wonderful pictures.
Great book for babies.......2005-08-21
This was my daughter's favorite book from about 6 mos until 12 mos. At 16 she prefers longer, more involved books, but still picks the bear books several times a week. She really likes to find the cat on each page. We also love Bear's Busy Family and Bear in Sunshine. I don't feel Bear in a Square is nearly as good.
A Winner!.......2004-05-25
One of the cute "bear" series, in a sturdy board book. Perfect for the pre-reading child, we tour bear's brightly colored home, rhyming as we go. The floorplan at the end is cute, and it's fun to watch your child puzzle out which room is which--after all, we're looking at the rooms from above. A great, reasonably priced gift for the pre-reading child.
Colorful, Wonderful Home.......2003-08-20
Bear's home is a bright, whimsical dream cottage. It is full of cheerful Tricia-Guild-type decor (purple floors, red-and-white checkered floors, green walls, fuchsia stair railings), loyal family (Bear's cat is always with him), and all the traditional trappings of "cozy" -- flower boxes, umbrella stands, tea cups, toys, a big squishy sofa, books, family photos, a bubblebath, a teddy bear, and glowing candles. Bear himself always has a little smile on his face. The floor plans at the end of the book are charming. One of my family's favorites.
Cozy fun.......2001-11-22
"Bear at Home" is a very colorful and satisfying book for preschoolers. Basically it involves a tour of bear's house (he lives like a human does, and his pet cat also appears on every page) and his activities in each room, told in rhyming couplets. "This is the hallway where bear climbs the stairs... and this is the library with big, cozy chairs." The book's beginning invites us to "open the door, and what do you see?" which makes for great one-on-one sharing with toddlers, who will be glad to point out the various objects found in the house. The art work is simple, appealing, and very colorful, right down to the endpapers. Best of all, there is a map of bear's house at the end of the book showing all the rooms we have visited. (I would have loved that as a kid, and would have wanted to draw a map of my own house!) A good book for kids ages 1-3.

Book Description
A city boy discovers the pleasures of country living
Harry loves the city, where he lives with his mom. This year he is finally old enough to visit his grandad in the country. Grandad comes to pick him up, and they take a bus, then a train, a boat, another bus, and finally a taxi to Grandad's farmhouse. At first things feel too different for Harry, but the day after he gets there, Harry gets to hold a newborn lamb. From then on, there's no limit to Harry's enjoyment of all the interesting things on a farm - he almost forgets to miss his own home in the city. The Anholts have crafted a gentle picture book that proves "There's no place like home" holds true for all kinds of places.

Wonderful Illustrations and a Story to Match.......2001-01-05
I checked this out of the new books section at our local library, and my 3-year-old really likes it. He is a child that loves the familiar and seems to empathize with both the grandfather's desire to go back to the country and Harry's desire to go back home to his mom in the city. The illustrations are really fabulous -- detailed, but with great whimsy, and a really extraordinary use of color. We had never read anything before by the Anholts, and Harry's Home led us to check out another five or so yesterday. Both my 2-year-old and 3-year-old loved Billy and the New School, one of the Anholts' previous books. Harry's Home is a great discovery. I recommend it.
An Instant Favorite.......2000-05-24
This is a charming book with a clever story and appealing illustrations. The moral is that new things grow on you, as did this book. After checking it out several times at the library, we decided we must have it. Bravo.

Father Bear Comes Home.......2002-05-11
There are 4 different stories in this book. My favorite was Little Bear's Mermaid. I liked when Little Bear saw the mermaid when his mom and dad were sleeping. I also liked when Little Bear went fishing. Other kids will like this book because it has many stories in it.
Only the best.......1999-11-11
The Little Bear saga are truly classic. From the artwork and storylines you think you are reading a Victorian era storybook. No your grandmother didn't read these stories to you. Soon enough we will be reading them to our grandchildren. Buy the hardback versions, your grandkids will love them.
It is about a bear.......1998-05-10

Book Description
Oooh--the dinosaurs are worried, the dinosaurs are scared: the big one's about with the sharp, sharp teeth and loud roaring shout. When they see him coming the pterodactyls fly up high in the sky, while the stegasaurs stay silent, hoping he'll pass them by. The babies stay hidden in their shells, while the gallimimus lifts his tail and runs so he'll be far away when the huge one comes. The roar is coming louder, the footsteps are quite near. Who could it be that makes the other dinos tremble with fear? Guess who: It's the T-Rex, and he's here for YOU. But don't worry: you've got the tabs, you're in control. Children will have a blast with their favorite prehistoric creatures.
