5 out of 5 stars well-spring of comparative reproductive biology.......2007-07-29

I recently turned to these two volumes to seek some general information about bird reproduction in order to explore a few comparative ideas emerging from my own work centered around sperm evolution, reproductive strategies and sexual selection. I could not help being drawn in, and ended up reading all (or at least specific sections of nearly all) chapters. Jamieson assembled an impressive team of authors for these volumes, and the result is uniquely complexioned and integrative coverage of bird reproductive biology. Scholarship generally runs high, with both historical and cutting edge coverage of many subjects. Jamieson's own contribution of an avian spermatozoa chapter is superb...virtually exhaustive treatment of a rather vast and (for me) daunting literature. It will serve as the point of departure for all future work on the subject.

The books themselves are high quality productions and richly illustrated. Given the large number of electron micrographs, histological illustrations and colored clades, etc., the care that went into book production really pays off, and leaves me concluding that these books are well worth the price. I easily recommend them as a necessary part of every university library, and encourage any biologist interested in birds - or more generally in comparative reproductive biology - to keep them on their shelf.

          Book Description

As we enter the twenty-first century, a number of medical, environmental, and social changes have profoundly affected human reproduction. This book discusses some of the more dramatic changes in an accessible manner, illustrating the ways in which human biology and culture can affect fertility. It provides a unique interdisciplinary perspective on the subject. Topics of discussion include medical technological advances that equip us with potential cures for many causes of infertility; diseases, such as AIDS, that have a devastating impact on the reproductive and social lives of humans; increasing industrialization and the development of fabricated materials that pollute our environment in unforeseen ways with possibly devastating effects on human health and fertility; and social revolutions that profoundly alter human relationships, such as nonmarital unions between heterosexual couples, same-sex relationships, and adoption and surrogacy.

              Book Description

Reproductive technologies to assist in both human conception and animal breeding are increasingly in demand. These technologies, along with the advent of tissue engineering, have propelled the challenges of tissue collection, preservation, and banking to the research forefront. Using examples drawn from reproductive technologies, Reproductive Tissue Banking presents the scientific principles underlying tissue banking. These examples serve as models for the technology of banking other living tissues, including blood, bone marrow, cornea, and skin. In discussing research emerging from their laboratories and those of others, the authors meld fundamentals of biology, chemistry, and physics with the latest discoveries in the field to give the reader profound insight into research directions and ethical considerations crucial to the advancement of tissue banking.
With its emphasis on human applications and concerns, this book provides a valuable supplement to short courses on tissue preservation and tissue engineering. Researchers in reproductive medicine, animal and veterinary science, and cryobiology will find this book, with its extensive bibliography, a very handy reference.

                Book Description

Ascidians are the invertebrate group that gave rise to vertebrates, thus the biology of ascidians provides an essential key to understanding both invertebrates and vertebrates. This book is the first to cover all areas of ascidian biology, including development, evolution, biologically active substances, heavy metal accumulation, asexual reproduction, host-defense mechanisms, allorecognition mechanisms, comparative immunology, neuroscience, taxonomy, ecology, genome science, and food science. The 69 articles that make up the collection were contributed by leading ascidiologists from all over the world who participated in the First International Symposium on the Biology of Ascidians, held in June 2000 in Sapporo, Japan. For scientists and students alike, the book is an invaluable source of information from the latest, most comprehensive studies of ascidian biology.

                    4 out of 5 stars a good book.......2007-04-12

I chose this book to because it had the most pertinent info on hiking through CR's national parks. I just got back from my trip and I found it very helpful. You would definately need another guide book to supplement it (eg: lonely planet ect.) because it has very few large maps of the area and costa rica can be a confusing place to navigate.

This book is great for what it is. It's much better than most travel guides for specific park info. It includes maps of trails, information on getting to the parks, whether the park itself has accomodations available, and wildlife/ecosystem information for each park.

DO NOT use this as your only guide. There is no info on accomodations or restaurants in the area. Also, some of the best places to go in Costa Rica are private reserves, rather than national parks.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the nature-conscious traveler.......2002-11-03

Contrary to the last review, we found this book to be extremely useful, and it contained background information and useful maps (such as the area around Sirena ranger station in Corcovado) not contained in other more general guidebooks. Also, there is a considerable amount of natural history information that was not contained in the other books that we had with us, such as the Lonely Planet guide.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of paper!.......2001-10-15

This book provides very little practical information. I purchased this book hoping it would contain more info on the parks than the standard Costa Rica guidebooks. I was sadly disappointed. The other guide books such as The New Key to Costa Rica and Moon's Handbook provide as much and in some cases more info on the parks than this guide. Plus they provide all the other information such as hotels, restaurants and transportation.
Save your money. I wish I had.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for nature lovers.......2000-10-13

(From Planeta Journal) - One of the first guidebooks to focus on the parks and preserves, this book is now in its second edition. It's an invaluable resource for visitors who'd like to get to know Costa Rica's lesser known parks and includes trail directions, dozens of hikes and descriptions of local flora and fauna. The new, second edition of this book includes five new national parks and preserves, plus updated and expanded descriptions of all 40 of Costa Rica's protected areas.

                      Book Description

This delightful book presents hundreds of entertaining caricatures of celebrities from popular American periodicals in the first half of the twentieth century. Employing a vivid new type of portraiture based on modern design and a preoccupation with personality- based fame, master caricaturists filled the pages of newspapers and magazines with renderings of Mae West, George Gershwin, the Marx Brothers, Babe Ruth, Mussolini, and other personalities of their times.

                      5 out of 5 stars A STUNNING OVERVIEW OF 20TH CENTURY CARICATURES.......1998-04-24

This is the best single overview of 20th Century American caricature I have ever seen. The quality of the reproductions is outstanding and a good many of the items herein are not available in other books. The book's cutoff point appears to be the Fifties; it would have been nice to have had some more recent examples by artists such as Edward Sorel, but perhaps the newer people are adequately covered in other books. Anyone interested in caricature cannot do without this book.

The Musee D'Orsay in Paris, formerly a grand train station, houses one of the world's finest collections of 19th-century art. Opened as a museum in 1986, its constant flow of traffic is a testament to a worldwide love affair with impressionist art. While the museum contains an extensive collection of drawings, sculpture, decorative arts, architecture, and photography from 1848-1914, its true pride is its collection of paintings. Flip through pages of work by some of history's most celebrated artists: Ingres, Delacroix, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne, Rodin, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Toulouse-Lautrec. While the bulk of the 240 color illustrations are devoted to paintings, a fine selection of the museum's entire collection is reproduced here.

We just returned from Musee D'Orsay. The book was very expensive at the museum and would have cost more to ship. The price was great. The book is new, large colorful pictures highlighting the best of one of my favorite museums in Paris!

This fantastic book is about the eminent museum in Paris that is situated on the left bank of the famous Seine. It holds mainly French art from 1848 to 1914. It has one of the leading collections of Impressionist art in the world. This book is to be read and savored by people who love France, awesome works of art, impressionism or who love the splendid D'Orsay museum. Everytime I read it, I have happy memories.

I had the most marvelous good fortune to spend a day at the Musee D'Orsay in Paris several months ago. It is such a magnificent place with wonderful sculptures and works of art. And naturally, me being me, I took hundreds of photos. And again, me being me, I needed to identify all the pictures when I got home which was difficult because, coupled with pictures from the Lourve and the British Museum, I had to identify well over 750 snapshots. That's when the Treasures of the Musee D'Orsay came in handy. Besides being a dandy coffee table book, it is chock full of photos from the museum's lovely pieces of art.

We learn that the ground floor corresponds to the Second Empire in France with sculptures ranging from 1848 to 1870's. We also learn about and can view the masterpieces of the 1870's...Manet, Degas, Renoir, Monet and Cezanne all have displays. The museum's other popular areas hold work by: Vincent van Gogh, Gaugin, Seurat, and Toulouse-Lautrec. We also see Rodin, Munch, Mollard, and even "The Artist's Mother" (Arrangement in Grey and Black) by Whistler as shown in this book along with scores of other paintings. Now, if I will only take time to work on my slide show now that I have names to go with these works of art!

1 out of 5 stars Just a collection of prints.......2004-07-11

This book is ok if you want a collection of prints of about 240 art objects. It is useless otherwise, specially if you are a beginner, because there is no commentary with any of the prints.

Each section begins with a short commentary - and that's all. For example, one section for Manet, Degas, Whistler, Latour, Monet, Morisot, Pissaro, Renoir, Sisley, Cezanne, etc has just a single page of commentary for 43 paintings!!

5 out of 5 stars Treasures of the Musée DýOrsay.......2003-10-31

For many of us a trip to one of the greatest museums in the world, Musée D'Orsay in Paris, can prove to be mindboggling. We are not only overwhelmed with the magnificent art that is on display but we never seem to have enough time or energy to view a fraction of these great artistic contributions to mankind.

Treasures of the Musée D'Orsay, authored by former director of the Musée Françoise Cachin, is one solution to resolve our dilemma in planning a meaningful visit to this great institution.

The author in her introduction introduces us to the most important artworks of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist eras.
While we take this journey, we are also made aware of the fact that the museum was a train station and a hotel that were classified as historical monuments in Paris, and as a result were spared demolition.

The museum houses the works of artists born between 1820 and 1870, with some exceptions. It is also explained to us that the Musée d'Orsay, insofar as its paintings are concerned, is to be placed between the Louvre, which houses artworks before 1820, and the Beaubourg Museum, which prides itself with works, executed after 1870.

What is interesting about the book is that the author gives us a detailed tour of the museum and this is what will make an ultimate tour to this great institution invaluable.

Cachin leads us by the hand from one section of the museum to another where we discover realism on the first floor; the Ingrism and Romanticism as well as social scenes by Daumier and highlights of Manet, Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Cezanne in the upper gallery; awesome statute surrounded by a steel architecture in the middle floor; and Winslow Homer and other foreign artists in the esplanade.

Another vital aspect about this beautiful book is that the co-author, Xavier Carrère, presents background information and concise essays pertaining to each and every one of the periods.

It is also breathtaking to view the many photographs of just about every aspect of the museum's collection-oil paintings; sculpture, decorative arts, pastels, drawings and watercolors, architecture and photography that are all well represented in the book.
What is also noteworthy is that the volume contains several works that may not even be on display when you personally visit the Musée as they are constantly being rotated in order to preserve them.

Francoise Cachin and Xavier Carrère have reached their goal of preserving vivid memoirs of the quality and variety of works seen at the Musee d'Orsay.
They have also provided the reader with an extensive index that will facilitate the viewing of a work of art within the book as well as in person at the Musée.
If you want to save steps and enjoy the Musée, read this book before visiting.

as with most guides, the best give you an understanding of context as well as information on what you're seeing. after a recent visit to the museum, with my head full of memories of the arresting paintings i'd just seen, i picked up this book as a memento. while it doesn't fully take me back (after all, what guide can transport you to the roof, overlooking the seine river and the louvre?), it does help you recall the wonderful memories of days spent wandering the halls.

the book doesn't catalouge the entire museum and some of my favorites weren't in there, but it does have an incredible selection of art. additionally, the commentary is well written and accessable. most importantly, they've thoughtfully put in several sidebars that help you understand the art scene in paris at the time - making the paintings much more relevant.

definitely one of the better museum guides i've seen. reproduction quality is quite good as well. i've shared it with several friends who haven't been and now they're clamoring to go.

                          Book Description

The Anderson Collection is among the greatest private collections of modern and contemporary art in the United States. As the highlight of its year 2000 exhibition schedule, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will present the collection, featuring more than 330 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by nearly 140 artists of international renown. This beautiful large-format volume, published in conjunction with the exhibition, features essays by leading art critics and scholars as well as lavish color plates of 285 of the works, providing an extraordinary overview of modern and contemporary art.
Both the exhibition and book divide this outstanding collection into five sections. "The New York School" features works by Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein, among others. "Art in California" includes works by Robert Arneson, Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, and Wayne Theibaud. "Contemporary Art" presents work from the 1970s and 1980s by Scott Burton, Susan Rothenberg, Terry Winters, Elizabeth Murray, and others. "Modern Sculpture" offers an impressive array of works by such artists as Alberto Giacometti, Auguste Rodin, and Alexander Calder. "Works on Paper" showcases drawings, watercolors, and gouaches by a range of artists, which mirrors the scope of the collection as a whole.
Overview essays for each of the five sections are written respectively by Jack Flam, Bill Berkson, Neal Benezra, Michael Brenson, and John Elderfield. A number of shorter texts address particular highlights of the collection.
Gary Garrels's introductory essay discusses the Anderson Collection as a whole and provides a context for its role as one of the most important private collections in the United States.

Written to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Terence Riley, the museum's chief curator of architecture and design, has identified a new design sensibility. Architects are once again concerned with beauty, and their desire to create beautiful buildings and structures is manifesting itself in the guise of "light" in all senses of the word: transparency, luminosity, weightlessness, and ephemerality. From Renzo Piano's glistening, undulating airport in Japan to Jean Nouvel's Cartier Foundation in Paris with its layered glass surfaces, these projects use glass and other semitransparent or reflective materials to create optic complexity and a new form of beauty that is at once tactile, sensual, and cerebral.

This book complements an exhibition with the same title held at MoMA, NYC between 21st September 1995 to 2nd January 1996. It commences with an introductory essay about how light is perceived in architecture, how technology has advanced to the point that certain ideals can now be reached, how light is interpreted from its initial functional purpose in buildings into something totally metaphorical & abstract aligned with art, pondering what is in store for us in the foreseeable future. Subsequently, it moves into the "Projects" section. The picks are quite international, ranging from Philip Johnson, Steven Holl to Herzog & Mueron, Zumthor, Ren Koolhaas, Sir Norman Foster to Renzo Piano to Toyo Ito, Sejima. Please be mindful that the projects are not necessarily buildings but prototypes which might never be realised in large scale. Anyhow, the projects are accompanied by pictures, occasional elevation plans, projects layout plans. It is a book that is fitting to flip through but not something that we would study in detail. The book finishes with project information, photograph credits and lastly the list of trustees of MoMA. A definite reference material but not something for keep permanently or as a cherished treasure on your coffee table. Last but not least, architecture can be deemed as a timely subject. As the projects covered here are almost a decade old, we might have come across something more avantgarde since.
