Book Description
As a group, carp provide 4 million metric tonnes of fish annually - over a quarter of all fish culture worldwide. For the first time, a book is available in English that concentrates solely on the carp as an economic rather than an ornamental fish with a panel of international experts producing a comprehensive, practical volume about carp production and management. Starting with a brief look at the biology of cyprinids, the book then discusses the methods and management of carp farming, from water quality to the economics of fish production in ponds. Novel methods to improve stock, including genetic engineering, are covered and case studies give added value to the text. As carp farming turns from traditional to intensive methods, farmers, researchers and technicians in industry will welcome this benchmark volume, which also is a valuable reference book for graduate and postgraduate students and lecturers in aquaculture.
Book Description
With more than 200,000 visitors annually, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is among the most alluring wilderness areas in the country, unique because it is most often explored by canoe. Comprised of more than one million acres, the BWCAW is an exceptional combination of expansive wilderness, abundant wildlife, and fascinating natural and human history. Exploring the Boundary Waters is the most comprehensive trip planner to the BWCAW, giving travelers an overview of each entry point into the wilderness area as well as detailed descriptions of more than one hundred specific routes - including a ranking of their difficulty level and maps that feature the major waterways, portages, and the designated campsites. The book is crafted so that readers can design their own route through the almost inexhaustible network of lakes and streams. Daniel Pauly, Boundary Waters expert, worked with the U.S. Forest Service, the Minnesota DNR, and local outfitters to gather information about how to obtain a permit, the rules and regulations of the park, safety tips, and how to help maintain the ecological integrity of the wilderness. As engaging as it is informative, Exploring the Boundary Waters not only contributes advice on the pros and cons of each route, but also brings the reader a natural and historical context for the journey by offering insight into the pictographs, mining sites, logging railroads, and ruins one may encounter throughout his or her expedition. With its accessible and personal style, Exploring the Boundary Waters is the perfect guide for anyone - novice or seasoned veteran - arranging a trip to the BWCAW. A companion Web site, http://www.boundarywatersguide.com, presents useful information that can be downloaded for planning a trip, including gear lists, overview maps, and route updates.
Customer Reviews:
Exploring the Boundary Waters.......2007-10-10
This is a good place to start planning your trip. The author has actually been to almost all of the areas reviewed.
Great Guide Book.......2007-03-09
Very detailed and accurate route descriptions. Portage difficulty and lengths were helpful in planning for "trip newbees" we had on our recent trip. Many geologic points of interest usually missed were well described.
A no-nonsense guide written especially for canoe enthusiasts.......2005-06-06
Exploring The Boundary Waters: A Trip Planner And Guide To The BWCAW is a no-nonsense guide written especially for canoe enthusiasts with an interest in the one million acres of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Written by a frequent visitor and Boundary Waters expert Daniel Pauly with assistance from the U.S. Forest Service, the Minnesota DNR, and local outfitters, Exploring The Boundary Waters is a "must-have" resource on everything from obtaining a permit to maintaining the ecological integrity of the wilderness to planning one's route, discovering historic sites on one's trip, and much more. Product Description
Volume two of JPG, Japan Graphics, is a comprehensive survey of contemporary Japanese graphic design and illustration. The changes in Japanese graphic design after the first volume have proved to be far beyond our imagination. Instead of "more copies, higher resolution, to a wider audience," there is a greater focus on individual and original works. JPG 2 brings together over 20 design teams, showcasing the evolution of teams from the first JPG as well as showcasing new projects, new teams, and the best contemporary design talents. Works by Amane Murakami, Buddha Productions, Dainippon Type Organization, Enlightenment, Hideki Inaba, Higraph, keitarrow, Loworks, Keigo Mohri, Namaiki, Shinji Shimada, Ryuh Tomoaki, Sunday-Vision, Power Graphixx, Takora, Taku Anekawa, TGB design, Tsuyoshi Kusano, Tsuyoshi Hirooka, wabisabi, iseneehihinee. The book is divided into 13 chapters: Photo + graphics, Imaginary landscapes, Printed matter, Customize on the product, Re-product design, Order made, Talking graphics, Portrait, Activism, Fake analog, Digital error, Super fine lines and Digital/manual interaction.
Customer Reviews:
Well done compilation of recent graphic representation in Japan.......2007-05-06
Japan Graphics 2 (or JPG2) is a handsomely produced survey of contemporary graphic design in Japan over the last four years. The general collection of work has a very urban character. It is apparent that many of the designers choose to interpret the world around them while others tend to re-create the world through their work. The juxtapositions are quite strong with works of pure fantasy nicely complementing or contradicting super-real representations.
The work spans a variety of concepts and is typically depicted as a 2D work complemented by photos showing the work in its original installed configuration, whether in a gallery or on an athletic shoe. Concepts such as 'Imaginary Landscapes', 'Talking Graphics', 'Portait', 'Fake Analog' and 'Digital/Manual Interaction' are represented through the work of twenty-one Japanese designers with few tending to specialize in any one category. The overlaps are interesting, with common threads apparent across the various topics.
The techniques are as varied as the concepts with an obvious slant towards digital processes. Work that appears manually-created is oftentimes done so digitally. In this context, the manual creation acquires somewhat of a special quality. This translates directly to the actual book itself. The cover has a raised plaque that appears to be laser cut wood, although upon closer examination I began to question that. The machine-produced pattern over the grain almost lends a plastic feel to the piece. So which is it? The world may never know.

Book Description
JPG--a tidy twist of letters that refers to both Japanese graphic design and that ubiquitous form of digital image transmission, the jpeg. Here is the youngest generation of graphic designers in Japan, a motley, formidable group whose work reflects a remix of influences from the West and appropriations of local cultural expressions. JPg is about 3D and computer graphics, but also about other fields of visual culture, from printed matter to consumer goods to contemporary art. Organized around three poetically conceived categories--"Scanning the World," "Multiplying Out," and "Free to Browse"--JPg acknowledges that design is everywhere. It is our space, our environment, and our experiences of the world; it is the media, it is the packaged and prepared food we eat, it is the cell phone we hold to our ear. JPg asks where all this design comes from, where it goes, and how we experience it--but in a specifically Japanese context, with all its possibilities for a more global application.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2004-08-05
I appreciate design from Japan and upon purchase of this book, I was really hoping this book gives me something to be excited about and I was literally in visual shock because a lot of my favorite designers and works that I have seen but wasn't sure of who created them, were featured in this book. WOW!
If anything, this book was meant to be looked at than read in my opinion. Actually, there isn't much to read but what is there to read, it's actually quite humorous and interesting (also informative) at the same time.
I really have to give Ramon Prat and staff some props for the designers they covered. Delaware, Level 1, groovevisions, oh... if you love Japanese design and how they incorporate it to their medium or have knowledge of it, you are just going to love this book.
Ok, plus and negatives:
+ Featuring the most influential designers from Japan and the designers chosen are among the top designers from Japan.
+ Book is beautifully done and definitely a visual book that may provide designers inspiration.
- For those looking for biographies and full written on the behind-the-scenes and what inspires the artists and a lot of copy, this is not the kind of book that you are looking for. (otherwise, if this doesn't bother you..then this book is perfect).
You can find this book at book stores but it will be shrink wrapped. So, if you are wondering what kind of book this is, it's a book featuring the works of popular designers. Again, I emphasize, if you are looking for in-depth interviews with the designers and behind-the-scenes, this book does not offer that.
Otherwise, what this book was meant to be and its presentation alone is just spectacular and of the plethora of design books that I own, this one is definitely a must have if you are fan of Japanese design. I love this book!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
critical.......2004-02-17
The book is actually rather critical of both japanese culture and digital graphics. More than just random artists showing their work, they are brought together by the madness of their medium.
