Book Description
The most complete resource on the techniques, equipment, principles, and practices of animal cell culture
Since publication of the previous edition of this benchmark text, numerous groundbreaking advances have occurred in stem cell research, cloning, tissue engineering, and in vitro toxicity testing. These and other developments have been incorporated into this fully revised and expanded Fifth Edition of Culture of Animal Cells. In addition, to answer the needs of the exponential increase in newcomers to cell culture, particularly in the biopharmaceutical industry, a completely new chapter on training in cell culture technology has been introduced.
The most complete resource on the techniques, equipment, principles, and practices of animal cell culture, this text offers a complete background related to growth of animal cells in culture. Beginning with laboratory design, safety, validation and bioethics, then continuing with preparation of media, primary culture and cell lines, through to characterization and authentication, contamination, specialized techniques, and troubleshooting, the coverage includes:
* An all-new section of training exercises, separated into basic, intermediate, and advanced procedures, cross-referenced to the relevant protocols
* New coverage of stem cells, bioethics, validation, cloning, cell signaling, in vitro toxicity testing, and tissue engineering
* An expanded full-color atlas section, with images of primary culture, cell lines, subculture, differentiation, cancer cells and transformation, three-dimensional culture, contamination, and specialized equipment
* Enhanced treatment of troubleshooting, with full cross-referencing to the relevant protocols and sections of text
* Fully updated references
* The clearest, most consistent presentation of step-by-step protocols available
* Numerous diagrams, photographs, tables, and charts
* Detailed and up-to-date information on reagent preparation and sourcing of materials and equipment, including a fully updated list of suppliers and other resources with Web sites
Indispensable for clinical and biopharmaceutical researchers and scientists, students, trainees, and technicians, this landmark text presents the most accessible and comprehensive introduction available to the culture and experimental manipulation of animal cells.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book!.......2007-09-08
Based on protocols in this book, I devised methods to complete my own experiments. I found the insights contained in the book completely indispensable. The range of topics it contains and the detail with which Freshney explains each point made the process of designing conditions for experiments rational and approachable. I highly recommend this book.
useful book.......2007-08-09
There are not a lot of glossy pretty pictures, which is a good thing for a no-nonsense instruction manual that gets the point across with what pictures it did have. I found it to be a very good complement to my cell culture class. Everything I learned in the lab was put into context nicely.
Save on Textbook.......2006-08-15
I purchased this book with a description of like new. I would say this is new. The previous person who used this did not even break in the binder. This is an excellent reference book, I have enjoyed reading the text up to this point.
Best Basic Book on Tisssue Culture.......2006-07-07
For many years Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells has been the gold standard of tissue culture reference books. This new edition adds and updates many techniques and continues to be the best book in its area. I use it extensively both for my own research and in teaching classes on tissue culture.
The best book on cell culture.......2005-01-09
Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells is a great book. It is writen on an easy style, it is concise and complete at the same time and it does teach you all the basics (and a little bit more) of cell culture. When I was doing my masters I didn't have a lot of help with my cell culture experiments and this book was fundamental for my research. The book covers everything, starting from the biology of cultured cells, equipments, design of the lab and asseptic technique and going all the way to primary culture, cloning and selection, cell separation, characterization, differentiation and more. The book (hard cover) is pretty resistant and it easily stands going to the bench (where you surely will be using it a lot). If you are thinking about spending money on a book about cell culture techniques this is the book! Don't think twice.

Book Description
Prion diseases, also known as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs), exist in both humans (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)) and animals (scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), chronic wasting disease) and have the unique property of being infectious, sporadic or genetic in origin.
Although the precise nature of the infectious agent responsible for TSEs is not definitely identified, it is now clearly demonstrated that a protein named PrP (for Prion Protein) plays a critical role in the transmission and pathogenesis of TSEs.
This book provides the general description as well as the details of the techniques currently used for the study of prion diseases. Taking into account the pivotal role played by PrP it is not surprising that many Chapters of this book deal with the purification, the detection and the characterization of the different forms of this protein. In addition, in vitro, cellular and animal models specifically adapted to the study of TSEs, as well as bio-safety procedures are described. Each Chapter is written by scientists involved for many years in their respective domain of prion biology who give the best of their knowledge in this technical document. This volume is a very useful tool for any laboratory which recently decided to contribute to the study of TSEs as well as for teams already engaged in this field for many years but interested in extending their technical capacity toward new methods.
Features:
Purification of PrPC and the Pathological Isoform of Prion Protein (PrPsc or PrP-res)
Animal Models of TSEs
Cell Culture Models of TSEs
PrPsc Immunohistochemistry
Western Immunoblotting Techniques

Book Description
Cell culture techniques are invaluable to the modern researcher but difficult to carry out successfully. As part of the series of Handbooks in Practical Animal Cell Biology, this volume offers a concise practical guide to the basic essentials of the technique. Researchers new to cell culture will find a clear explanation of the essential equipment of a tissue culture facility, including tissue culture media and sera. It describes methods for growing suspension and adhesion cultures, including how to store cells and prepare primary cultures from cells. For those already culturing cells, the handbook will act as a handy reference to the basic techniques. The essence of the book is to deal with the generalities of cell culture and to give a grasp of the basic concepts before involvement in more specialized work in the field. Ideal for anyone moving into tissue cell culture techniques or looking for a concise reference book.
Customer Reviews:
From Book to Bench-Cell Culturing Made Easy.......2000-05-16
Whether a first year college student or a seasoned researcher, General Techniques of Cell Culture is a must. GTCC simplifies the complicated world of cell culturing without insulting. The authors, Maureen A. Harrison and Ian F. Rae, make no assumptions about their readers, and take the task of explaining large amounts of scientific information in an organized and easy to read format. This handbook goes beyond general lab techniques and provides not only the "how-to", but also gives the developing lab the where at, as it rounds out each section with a directory of services and researchable references. By providing time honored techniques, General Techniques of Cell Culture also takes some of the trial and error out of propagating healthy cells in the lab. This alone should make the transition from book to bench less tedius and more productive.

Book Description
The theoretical background of cytogenetics as well as the practical methods to investigate chromosomes from Drosophila to mammals and humans are presented in this book. Theory and practical protocols on the following topics are included: Cell culture methods, chromosome preparation and banding techniques, radioactive and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) methods and their derivates (chromosome painting), meiotic chromosome methods using light and electronic microscopy, the polytenic (Drosophila) and lampbrush (urodeles) chromosomes as well as flow and slit scan cytometry. The editors, all at INRA, played a prominent part in the development of cytogenetics. Paul Popescu, a specialist for domestic animals worked with gene mapping, Helene Hayes, together with Popescu showed the homology of bovine and human chromosome disorders, and Bernard Dutrilaux focused on human cytogenetics.
