    4 out of 5 stars immense desolation.......2005-02-20

As an expatriate Sandgroper, this narrative was quite entrancing. The authors have clearly spent much time traipsing through the vast areas of Western Australia. Arguably, they have seen more of it than many of its locals, who tend to be congegated in the Perth metropolitan area. Thus, somewhat ironically, a ready audience for this book might be people in Perth that wish to get out and see more of Australia's largest state.

Overseas visitors should be cautioned about the book. Even though it does give the size of WA, the sheer immensity and dearth of people may still be surprising. Twice the size of Alaska, and with scarcely 2 million people. Well over half of which are in Perth. The book strives to convey the feeling of desolation once you leave Perth, and you should do well to keep that in mind.

Last summer, a friend and I went on a road trip in WA. We hadn't made any plans for accommadations when we got there and all we had was a 4X4 camper and our trusty Lonely Planet Guide! We were able to plan out our whole trip using this book as we went along. I suggest it to everyone going, even if you want to plan before. It also has a lot of historical and everyday information, that can complement a trip. TAKE THIS WITH YOU!

5 out of 5 stars Great Travel Book.......2002-07-25

This travel book on Samoa is full of information to help one maximize a trip to Somoa. It has some great descriptions of Samoan history and places of interest. I am worried though. I am worried that if ever go to Samoa I will not know how to properly act. The author of this travelogue time and time again warns the reader about Samoan cultural mores which should be followed. But I am afraid I will forget some of them and be a shameful traveler.

5 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need.......2001-01-24

This book has everything you need to know when travelling to Samoa. Nothing is missed and you should be able to plan a long or short stay in Samoa. Everything is as described in the book and nothing is really out of date. The only problem is that some of the maps lack detail to be useful, however quality maps are available in Apia.

5 out of 5 stars Very thorough coverage.......2000-05-24

This book is PACKED with information! It is also a really great size (smallish) to tuck in my travel bag and take along to be sure not to miss anything on my first trip to Samoa. :o)

          Book Description

The men of the expedition called them "devils" - those headstrong, mischievous, untrained ponies brought from the top of the world. The little horses made the lives of their handlers miserable during the initial stages of two attempts on the South Pole, yet endeared themselves so much that the men shared their own precious rations with them. Each handler could hardly bear it when his pony's turn came to be sacrificed for the good of all. The names of the men of these expeditions are well-known - Scott, Shackleton, Mawson, Cherry-Garrard, Ponting, Wilson, Bowers, Oates - but few know the names of the ponies, or even that there ever were Manchurian and Siberian ponies in Antarctica. Through meticulous research, the author brings Nobby, Snatcher, Snippets, Bones, Socks, Chinaman, poor Jimmy Pigg and the other ponies alive again while telling of the two trouble-plagued expeditions to the South Pole. This edition is being produced in an effort to raise awareness of the need to preserve the four huts in Antarctica used by the British explorers, along with all of the remarkable memorabilia and ice-bound supplies preserved within their frozen walls.

          Book Description

The Indian princes of the British Raj lived lives of unparalleled opulence and luxury. Made for Maharajas returns readers to that resplendent era, presenting a selection of one-of-a-kind objects crafted to order by the outstanding European luxury goods manufacturers, fashion houses, and decorators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here are the custom-designed cars, jewelry, and extraordinary objéts d'art commissioned by maharajas, nawabs, nizams, and sultans from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron, Harry Winston, and others, accompanied by anecdotes that illuminate this sumptuous way of life. Many of the illustrations in this book have never been previously reproduced outside of India, making this not only the first volume of its kind, but a remarkable keepsake that may never be duplicated in our lifetime.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-10-10

This book is fascinating. It is a very complete study of the influence of europen culture, art and crafts on the Maharajas of India, encompassing all forms of consumer goods... cars, jewels, trains, etc, etc. All these works of art are the result of intense cultural and economic exchange between both worlds and the book emphasizes this very well. A scholarly publication well served by wonderful photographs.

5 out of 5 stars "Made For Maharajas" is especially recommended for academic library collections.......2006-12-09

Dr. Amin Jaffer is a curator in the Asian Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London where he specializes in Indian art and culture during the era of European influence during the British Raj period (1857-1947). With "Made For Maharajas: A Design Diary Of Princely India", Dr. Amin has compiled with narrative commentary an impressive historical overview of art and luxury goods in all manner of media and associated with the aristocracy of the maharajas during these centuries. Superbly illustrated with 290 images (150 of which are in full color), the representative and custom-made artifacts range from private airplanes and luxury cars, to chandeliers, gold dinnerware, couture fashions, fine leather goods, houses, furniture, jewelry, and more. Dr. Amin drew upon the archives of firms that included Louis Vuitton, Boucheron, Chaumet, Cartier, and Hermies, he had access to palace and private collections, and employing his own extensive expertise, has written a text that is as entertaining as it is informative in revealing the extraordinarily varied works commissioned by princes whose personal wealth was exceeded only by their eccentricities. As an impeccable work of scholarship in a coffee-table art book format, "Made For Maharajas" is especially recommended for academic library collections and would make a superb choice as a community library Memorial Fund acquisition.

            5 out of 5 stars extreme couture.......2006-02-20

An extremely personal record of the inner workings of one of the most brilliant romantics to work in french couture. If you admire artists that follow their own vision (and a wonderfully extreme vision at that!) this "scrap-book" will forever inspire and delight you. Mr. Lacroix's strong interest in historical research, passion for color and textiles. and fascination with creating one-of -a-kind-looks for a dramatic, glamorous, accentric woman fills his book of ideas with an unusual richness. A true fashion original.

5 out of 5 stars tear-off each page from this book, then frame it.......2000-06-18

each page is worth becoming a central piece of decoration in you bedroom or your entrance hall. Hand-written notes, collages, intimate comments. Everything in this book talks to the heart. You will love this masterpiece. More than a book!

4 out of 5 stars Delve into the creative process of a famous designer.......1998-10-27

I recommend this as a must have for anyone interested in couture. It is a very detailed and revealing book on the working methods of Christian Lacroix. No other book follows the mind of a famous designer as he creates a collection the way this book does. It draws on Christian's very own notes and scrapbook. Great content, great visuals, great book!

            Book Description

In 1894, Paul Gauguin left Europe to spend two years in Tahiti, where he produced some of his most beautiful and best-known paintings. But he also created another masterpiece that has languished in obscurity for nearly 100 years: a detailed, entertaining journal and the sensuous woodblock prints and sketches made to accompany it. In this exquisitely designed edition, Chronicle Books is proud to publish together for the first time the evocative text and richly colored illustrations of Gauguin's Tahiti diary. Including Tahitian myths and legends, affectionate tales of Gauguin's encounters with the beautiful Tahitian people, and fascinating glimpses of the inspiration behind his most famous paintings, Noa Noa now assumes its rightful place among the masterworks of an extraordinary artist.

This is a lovely book... and, brief though it is, helped me to understand more about Gauguin's reasons behind his actions. I read it at a perfect time - when the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY was holding one of their most important exhibits on Gauguin and featured his wood cuts. It's a colourful, passionate and painful journey.

This is a great book detailing a few pages from his journal. It has great wood-cut reprints and is a quick read. It puts you into the spirit of Tahiti.

              5 out of 5 stars A Selection from Hopper's Journals.......2006-05-25

I just want to add the note that this book contains a selection of the Hopper notebooks, not the complete works. However, it is, as far as I know, the only way these are published, and the pages are very interesting indeed. It is amazing to see how fine these little sketches are of his more famous paintings. It was meant to be a record, a simple catalog, but it reminds one that Hopper was an excellent graphic artist as well as a painter. i think it is a brilliant idea for any artist as a way of keeping touch with larger works instead of with photographs.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-09-28

This is a wonderful glimpse into the development of Hopper's paintings. It appears to be a photocopy of Hopper's working journals, which were assembled and maintained by his wife Jo over a period of 30+ years. Jo wrote the text and Edward drew a thumbnail sketch for the paintings. For many of the paintings, the text includes the brand of paint (e.g., Rembrandt, Blockx, W&N), the type of canvas and the priming, the studio in which it was painted, and to whom it was sold. Jo frequently included a description of the place, the people, or the mood portrayed in the paintings.

If you're an artist or a serious Hopper fan, you'll enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Incorrect synopsis information.......1998-09-23

The synopsis for this title is incorrect. The text refers to the title "The Poetry of Solitute". THIS publication is a facsimile of Hopper's record keeping journals. It includes mostly thumbnail drawings, paint recipes and sales information for many of his works.

                Book Description

This is the legendary travel diary that the 24-year-old Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (Le Corbusier) kept during his first journey through central and eastern Europe. In a flood of highly personal impressions and visual notations, it records his first contact with the vernacular architecture that would preoccupy him for the rest of his life and with the monuments he most admired, the mosque complexes, the Acropolis, and the Parthenon.

"'Very often, I left the Acropolis burdened by a heavy premonition, not daring to imagine that one day I would have to create.' Such words, are moving from any aspiring architect; from Le Corbusier they are an inspiration."
                -- Progessive Architecture

An this centenary year [1987] of his birth, many books are being published about Le Corbusier but none offers more insight into his character than this book from his own hand ... Every designer speculates at one time or another just what attributes other than talent are needed for success. In the case of the young Le Corbusier this travel journal reveals... extraordinary ego, energy, curiosity, and passion."
                -- Interior Design

Ivan Zaknic, the editor and translator, is Associate Professor of Architecture at Lehigh University.
