Well I purchased this book along with some other travel guides including "lets go Europe" and just looking at it made me board. I traveled Europe for 3 months from London to Istanbul and I found this book of little use or interest. I think it might have to do with the type of travel I found myself doing. I was jumping on trains by the seat of my pants: buying tickets only the day before and using a 3 month unlimited ticket.

      5 out of 5 stars 4 cups, 4 kids, 4 questions, 4 parts*4 chapters but 5 stars.......2001-03-08

Passover is focused on kids and telling the story. Passover has a lot of fours. There are four cups, four sons/children, and four questions, so therefore the book has four PARTS and four CHAPTERS in each PART. Part One is the TELLING (haGaddah) of The Story; Part Two is Preparing for the Seder; Part Three is At The Seder; and Part Four is Concluding The Seder. Each chapter in the Parts is filled with stories, games, explanations, songs, insights, recipes, and craft projects. For example, in Chapter One, the Exodus story is introduced to the reader with stories, songs (an Exodus rap), midrash stories, a riddle, a game ("I am packing for the Exodus, I am taking an Apple, Bitter Herbs, C..., D..."), and a craft project (make a mural). The Chapter for the plagues tells how to make a plague puppet. In the Chapter on Miriam and the Hebrew Women, the reader can learn to make a tambourine. In Chapter 7, On The Seder plate, you learn about maror and betzah customs from around the world, learn to make charoses, or a charoset pyramid, or play a "nut" game. Plus there is a recipe for red yemenite eggs. Chapter 8 on Matzah contains matzah customs, recipes, riddles, and folkstories. In Chapter 9, learn to make a "Four Questions" kippah to wear. In Chapter 10, on Dayenu, you can learn to add new stanzas for your own updated Dayenu, or make a micrography, or perform an interesting custom with scallions. In Capter 14, learn about modern Exoduses. And in Chapter 16, learn classic and new songs from Adir Hu, Ehad Mi Yodei-a, QUEN SUPIESE, Had Gadya, and Lo Yisa Goy. A must for any household with kids.

I used to refer to this book often when I worked as a teacher in Australia, and I loved it! It's great for primary school kids, and even high school ESL students. I already have my own copy; now I'm buying one for a young lady whom I am sure will enjoy it.

Wide-ranging collection of crafts, cooking projects, stories, historical info, holiday ideas, songs etc. Contains excellent bibliography so you can find other books if something is of particular interest to your family. Geared to school-aged kids more than pre-schoolers. (Reads at an upper elementary-grade level.) A resource book for parents to read-aloud or to draw ideas from. If you need your imagination sparked or are a family new to Judaism this book offers a ton of useful material.

          Book Description

Sick of creating web sites that reload every time a user moves the mouse? Tired of servers that wait around to respond to users' requests for movie tickets? It sounds like you need a little (or maybe a lot of) Ajax in your life. Asynchronous programming lets you turn you own web sites into smooth, slick, responsive applications that make your users feel like they're back on the information superhighway, not stuck on a dial-up backroad.

But who wants to take on next-generation web programming with the last generation's instruction book? You need a learning experience that's as compelling and cutting-edge as the sites you want to design. That's where we come in. With Head Rush Ajax, in no time you'll be writing JavaScript code that fires off asynchronous requests to web servers... and having fun doing it. By the time you've taken your dynamic HTML, XML, JSON, and DOM skills up a few notches, you'll have solved tons of puzzles, figured out how well snowboards sell in Vail, and even watched a boxing match. Sound interesting? Then what are you waiting for? Pick up Head Rush Ajax and learn Ajax and asynchronous programming the right way--the way that sticks.

If you've ever read a Head First book, you know what to expect: a visually rich format designed for the way your brain works. Head Rush ramps up the intensity with an even faster look and feel. Have your first working app before you finish Chapter 1, meet up with the nefarious PROJECT: CHAOS stealth team, and even settle the question of the Top 5 Blues CDs of all time. Leave boring, clunky web sites behind with 8-tracks and hot pants--and get going with next-generation web programming.

"If you thought Ajax was rocket science, this book is for you. Head Rush Ajax puts dynamic, compelling experiences within reach for every Web developer." -- Jesse James Garrett, Adaptive Path

"A 'technology-meets-reality' book for web pioneers on the cutting edge." -- Valentin Crettaz, CTO, Condris Technologies

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Head Rush Ajax (Head First).......2007-09-07

Very nice book. I am enjoying reading it. It brings new view to asynchronous web javascript using non formal approach. I like Head First series.

1 out of 5 stars Not my style.......2007-05-21

For me, all the information in this 400 page book could have been effectively presented in about 50 pages, using a normal page layout with illustrations. While reading this book, I felt like I was wasting my time. Eventually, I found myself skimming the pages for nuggets of useful information buried in all the fluff (handwritten notes, arrows, and pictures of dogs and guys in ribbed sweaters.) I am willing to consider that perhaps the style of this book is just not right for me. But even for someone who likes/is compatible with this style, I believe the limited amount of actual information contained in this book makes it not a good value.

2 out of 5 stars Contains some good information, but..........2007-05-06

The top-most declaration on the front page of Head Rush Ajax is "Get it in your brain, FAST". A more appropriate comment would be: "Get it in your brain after taking a tedious journey down a long, winding road". I found some useful information about Ajax, but only after being frustrated by having to wade through an excessive amount of fluff, even if the dog pictured so often is really cute. Head Rush Ajax typically uses about 20 pages to present and explain material that anyone with any coding experience at all can learn in a paragraph or two. So, if you are an absolute beginner, this book might be just the thing, with entertaining inserts to give you a break if you need one. But if you're even a little experienced with html, css, javascript or php you will probably find the pace to be way too SLOW.

1 out of 5 stars Smug Style and Questionable Content.......2007-04-21

The content of this book is a little odd. It rushes through introductory topics for the browser side at the beginning to get you going, but has no discussion of what you might set up as a web server to model the back end for which they provide PHP code. This is especially odd given the emphasis on active learning; you can't actually model the whole system from their instructions without other references. Having configured enough open source servers, I know this isn't hard and could be handled in a short appendix. The comment in the editorial review to the effect of "have your first app working before the end of Chapter 1" needs to be evaluated in that light.

The Head Rush book series is likely something you like or hate. I find the tone of the authors smug and self-satisfied, and for me it works against their stated goal of really engaging the reader. The pedagogical concepts are not particularly new, but they have a theory they think is revolutionary so they have an overly assertive style: a "conversational" tone that is self-consciously hip, hard-to-read handwritten comments, and cheesy photographs and jokes. The same pedagogical methods could be presented in a much more neutral fashion. The style also means that this would be a poor reference after you gain some skills.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book for AJAX beginners.......2007-04-11

This book does one good thing, and that is introducing the reader to AJAX.

Compared to other Head First books it is a little more repetitive, takes longer to get the reader's head around the topic at hand and finally it has external requirements for the reader to be successful in going through the book in follow by example mode.

The external requirements of the book are:

          1) You need to be able to understand PHP on a very basic level in order to follow through the examples in the book.

          2) In order to follow step by step the book, you need to set-up your test box as a WEB/PHP server.

Requirement #1 is not problematic, #2 may be problematic to some folks, to others it may be even fun -- BTW: The page at [...]
I would have given this book four stars for beginners if the instructions for #2 would exist, at least in the head first site, but they are not there yet by 4/10/07.

          Additional notes:

          - Chapter 3 example runs dog slow in FireFox and does not render properlyin IE7.

          Book Description

This large format, comprehensive, high quality and visually rich art book covers the history of animation throughout the world, focusing heavily on the North American creative engines of Disney, Warner and now the new, small production CGI houses. The book is divided into world regions to reveal the clear developments in each area, but heavy cross referencing will show the increasing internationalization of animation from the 1930's when the industry and creative imagination of Walt Disney began to infect artists and producers the world over, revealed most recently in The Matrix phenomenon where the bridge between the first and subsequent films, (Animatrix, nine animated shorts), was provided by a pioneering collaboration between US and Japanese animation studios.

Beginning with the earliest in animation, we follow the few individuals who worked on their own to develop techniques that would soon transform animation into a mass-market phenomenon. In recent years, animation has been hugely impacted by the arrival of the computer, seen in films such as Toy Story and Shrek. Computers have pushed animation to the limit by achieving fine, detailed, real-world rendering techniques that challenge the next generation of animators.

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable overview of animation art.......2007-02-18

I loved this book, read it four times. It covered all types of animation
including stop motion. It was organized by decade, by country. There were
many contributors who chose what they were most interested in and I guess
their passion rubs off because it is hard to put down and very informative.
If you want a course in animation history, just read this and save your
tuition money. I don't know how Jerry Beck does it all but we all
benefit from his dedication. Thank you, Jerry. Keep up the good work.

From the early days up to the latest blockbusters of the 21st century, the authors have covered all concepts, genres and media. Including European, Asian and Canadian cartoons, stop motion, CGI and more.

Beautifully presented with many colour pictures and written by experienced contributors it leaves no stone unturned.

The only disappointment is the amount of text devoted to one of my all time favourites, Tom & Jerry.

Otherwise a comprehensive tome that will provide for anybody interested in animation.

5 out of 5 stars A "feast" for the mind as well as for the eye...........2004-12-16

This is a magnificent achievement. Serving as General Editor, Jerry Beck has brought together in a single volume a riveting narrative which examines the history of cartoon, anime, and CGI with stunning full-color illustrations of that history. As he explains in his Introduction, "We have assembled an international team of animation authorities to tell the tales behind the toons. -The story is told in chronological sequence with choice images that enhance its history...From popular Disney characters to obscure personal films, it is all covered: Hollywood hits and Japanese anime, as well as Russian masterpieces and Asian artfilms. Looking it over, it is quite a wild ride." Indeed it is. The material is skillfully organized within twelve chapters which range from "The Origin of the Art" to "The New Century." By no means do I claim to be an expert on the subject of animation art but I presume to observe that I cannot imagine what has been left out. The illustrations are stunning; the prose narrative is crisp and lucid.

In the Foreword, Jeffrey Katzenberg observes that animation art provides a unique opportunity "to remember to know who has gone before, to really know the stories, take lessons from them, and bring that knowledge to the future. My hope is that, one day, other people will feel the same way about about those of us who are making animated films now. While it is an amazing thing to have the opportunity to create films and to bring these enormous enterprises to the world, it is something entirely different and entirely more rare to have our work remembered and considered part of the continuing evolution of an art form." Thanks to Beck, those who work their way through this magnificent volume will not only remember what has been achieved in animation art thus far; they will also understand what can yet be accomplished as others who have yet to reveal themselves through their art.

I highly recommend this volume to anyone interested in animation art, of course, but also to those who have an interest in the creation and evolution of comic books. Also to those who share my high regard for illustrators such as Al Hirschfeld whose art is celebrated in Hirschfeld on Line, now available from Amazon in both book and DVD formats.

"Greek Letters: From Tablets to Pixels" is a great book. Some day it will be recognized as a classic, not only by Greek Scholars, students and publishers, but also by designers of typefaces for both Latin-based and non-Latin writing forms. Louis Rosenblum, Belmont, Massachusett
