Book Description
Peripheral neuropathy, the variety of conditions that result when the nerves that connect to the brain and spinal cord are damaged or diseased, is commonly associated with diseases such as diabetes, HIV, alcoholism, and lupus. Although widespread — it affects 10–20 million people in the United States — information about the condition has been difficult to obtain. This essential guide explains what is known about peripheral neuropathy, including its causes and manifestations, and what can be done to manage it. Topics include drug therapy for the condition and its symptoms, interventional therapy, alternative medicines, caring for the feet, and much more. This book will enable patients to make informed decisions about their care.
Customer Reviews:
Neuropathy Understandable.......2007-08-24
Peripheral Neuropathy is a concise, inexpensive volume written in plain English. It will be useful to both neuropathy sufferers and their physicians alike.
Dr. Latov's expertise -- as a clinician, teacher, and a founder of The Neuropathy Association(www,neuropathy.org) -- is well-reflected in the text.
When both the doctor and the patient are able to discuss neuropathy knowledgeably as a result of reading this work, the disease will be better understood and managed
Helpful.......2007-06-16
It was very informative. Author seemed very knowledgeable and credible. I learned new ideas for supplements to help my condition. Easy to read.

The Tucson, AZ Neuropathy Support Group highly reccommends this book. It is clearly written. It is an excellent book giving great insight into this disease. It is all encompassing, concise and direct. There was no sugar coating, nor was it disparing. Many treatments and approaches were analyzed. All our group endorsed it without exception for all neuropathy sufferers.
Peripheral Neuropathy: When the Numbness, Weakness, and Pain Won' Stop.......2007-02-14

No More Heartburn.......2007-09-14
Excellent book !! Has made a significant change in our lives.
Arrived with no delay and in excellent condition
Thank you.
Candida NOT the only thing discussed here!.......2007-08-01
I'm not sure people who commented on Candida read the entire book. Or, perhaps it's the only aspect that caught their attention. This does NOT only deal with candida!
The reason this book is as great as it is: Dr. Rogers never gives one theory or one fix for any one problem. She acknowledges every body is different. This is really important as simplistic as this sounds. Most books/doctors usually have only one quick fix for everyone. Regular drug therapy, whether prescribed or over-the-counter uses exactly that theory.
For those of us with more complex problems other than gastric (especially MCS) this may be the key for regaining our health. The other great thing about this book is if you don't have insurance or don't have access to a doctor who can help she gives alternative measures to guide you to the answers for good health. I HIGHLY recommend this book!
Misleading title -- a book with another agenda.......2007-06-13
This book really isn't about heartburn -- it's about the faddish theory of candida (yeast) overgrowth being the cause of many gastrointestinal problems. Although, this may be true -- and yet most researchers and doctors are skeptical (including Dr. Weill -- see his site) -- you'd never know it from this book's title. Rogers believes in only one cause for heartburn and GERD (and everything else) -- candida.
As someone else pointed out, the book is also excessively alarmist when it comes to the risks of esophagal cancer to those suffering from GERD.
That said, there is some interesting information here (all of it couched in a very particular, kind of political way), and the diet seems harmless enough, so I've actually been following it. People who've left reviews here seem to be hqaving some success, though I remain deeply skeptical. The candida craze seems wishful thinking -- one cure for nearly everything that ails you.
I wish the book's cover had been a bit more honest.
Healing Gastrointestinal Disorders.......2007-05-13
I found the book to be an excellent source of information in helping me get my son off of Nexium, healing the erosion in his esophagus, and controlling his acid reflux. It has a lot of information on other gastric disorders as well. She also points out that making life style changes in your diet can keep you healthy (which is what I did for my son)can keep you off of medications that have other ill effects. She also recommends the book "Eat Right for Your Blood Type" so you know what you should eat to stay healthy. If you have a gastrointestinal disorder this is the book to purchase; since it's self help, educational, etc. I had purchased other books but this is the best one and most helpful.
It's absolutely AMAZING!!!.......2007-04-21
I was in a local bookstore looking for different recipe's that I could try to keep my chronic reflux to a minimum. As bad as my GERD is I could not accept being on a pill for the rest of my natural life. I hated that idea and wanted desperately to at least start eating things that would affect me the least. I turned the corner and literally ran into this book, knocking it off of the shelf...I picked it up and without even giving it a test run through I bought it. I've been a sufferer for more than 10 years and have had great trouble with taking a pill for my condition for the rest of my life...tagamet, to prilosec, to protonix, to prevacid...I was at the point that I was affraid that my body would be immune to everything eventually...Then my doctor advised me to take the prilosec twice a day instead of once....Seriously??? I'm not even 30 and all I could think of is that I am going to be on continuous drug treatment forever. I am so happy to say that since reading this book one week ago...I have been completely off of my daily medications, eating healthier, and I feel sooooo much better it's just amazing to me. My body is actually finally starting to heal!!! I recommend everyone read this book...even if you don't suffer from heartburn or other related illnesses...this is an eye opener about everything that is in the food market today!
Book Description
This newbie's guide to Ubuntu lets readers learn by doing. Using immersion-learning techniques favored by language courses, step-by-step projects build upon earlier tutorial concepts, stimulating the brain and increasing the reader's understanding. It also covers all the topics likely to be of interest to an average desktop user, such as installing new software via Synpatic; Internet connectivity; working with removable storage devices, printers, and scanners; and handling DVDs, audio files, and even iPods. It also eases readers into the world of commands, thus allowing them to work with Java, Python or other script-based applications; converting RPMs to DEB files; and compiling software from source.

An excellent choice for Linux/Ubuntu beginners.......2007-10-07
This book is simplistic and goes step by step. Please understand, it will try to give you a basic/intermediate understanding of Ubuntu and try to teach some things about Linux. It is not trying to teach you Linux itself. Just Ubuntu...a particular 'flavor' of Linux.
I agree with a previous review that this book could have used more pictures, diagrams, visuals. Technical direction without pictures is cruel to the geekiest of people. So, that is why I gave it 4 stars. Also, this book does not go deeply enough into setting up, backing up and protecting your partitions and files. Things that are crucial to know because if done properly, can save you hours of pain! Something Windows users are very familiar with and trying to escape.
Tired of the restrictions and lack of performance from Windows? Tired of needing new, powerful hardware to satisfy Windows' bloated code? Tired of paying money for extra software like cd/dvd burning tools, backup software, MP3 ripping and burning, tired of shelling out $250 to $600 for Microsoft's Office Suite? Come over to Linux!! No digital rights management or privacy invading issues, no network connection restrictions, no slow degraded performance due to not having a brand new computer!!
Yes, it takes time to learn and will require some effort on your part...but the rewards are well worth it.
This is the book I've been looking for for years!.......2007-08-30
I've tried to figure out Linux many times before but could just never get it. This book is remarkable. If you're a Linux guru this is not the book for you (it's far too simplistic for a Linux guru), but if you are a person running Windows that is sick of how poorly it performs and how much software costs, and want to switch over to a far superior operating system while making your computer faster, more secure, and never spending a penny of money on software again, this is the book for you. This book is written in plain English for people that aren't computer geeks, and is very easy to understand. It quickly gets you up and running on Ubuntu Linux (which you can download fore free) and them BAM - you're up and running. Everything is easy, works GREAT, and is FREE!!!
This is the book I've ben searching for for years.
Best guide for geeks and non-geeks alike.......2007-08-16
Book was extremely easy to follow and helped with every aspect of setting up my new OS. Although I will have to retain Windows for some of the programs I run, Ubuntu will be my main operating system.
Find another way.......2007-08-05
I've been trying to install the software all weekend but my system freezes every single time at screen 1/7 (select language) although to be fair, I got to screen 2/7 once before it froze.
Save your money and order the free CD from the Ubuntu website. By the way, there is no website (that I've been able to find) that provides support.
I'm definitely a non-geek so maybe I'm missing something but this book/CD was meant for non-geeks wasn't it?
Unbuntu for Non Geeks Great Book for Beginners.......2007-08-03
This is a great book for newbies to Unbuntu Linux. It could have a few more pictures and illustrations. The author knows his subject but he could go a little more in depth as there are thing he assumes you know and if I would have come straight from Windows to Ubuntu I would have had a hard time conprehending certain things. Overall it is one of the best books on Linux I found. I also read his Linux for Non Geeks.
Book Description
It happens in an instantsquealing breaks, a ladder that gives way, a pool cue swung in a moment of ragebut the affects of a blunt-force trauma to the head can last a lifetime. One of the more common injuries that can affect cognitive function, mild traumatic brain injury, or MTBI, affects more that half a million Americans each year, and research suggests that as many as 6.5 million Americans are living with the effects of MTBI. For the first time ever, this book assembles facts about MTBI together with a research-based program that readers can use to overcome the disadvantages of traumatic brain injury.
The book addresses the emotional issues that often accompany MTBI, especially anxiety and depression. Readers learn basic self-help strategies to counteract problems that may be caused by the injury. The later chapters discuss the four major domains of cognitive function and ways in which individuals can challenge their limitations and repair specific brain functions. The book concludes with an exploration of the various potential long-term affects of MTBI and the outside resources available to assist readers.
Customer Reviews:
Useful but needs help with guided approach.......2007-06-28
Needs more structural work to assist those with varying degrees of disability. More on "how to use this book" would be useful. For brain injury patients, these is no such thing as giving too much direction, ezpecially for those with minimal tolerance for books and written material. I did not find it possible to attack page 4, for example, and move streadily forward from there. Some sections were beond my limit of understanding and patience. It was sometimes difficult to see why the workbook tackled certain topics.
The workbook approach opens the door to a new type of thinking aboutthe issues that is not available in other publcations today and that is the true value of this book.
The TBI Bible If you have a loved one with TBI you will need this book!.......2006-06-21
We got the book shortly after our son's head injury and have not put it down since. The book has sections on every aspect of head injury and guides you through the process of recovery. The exercises were a little challenging but eventually manageable. If you have a loved one with a head injury this book is a must.
Hope and Healing.......2005-03-29
This book is a great resource for family, friends, caregivers, and patients suffering from mild traumatic brain injury. The easy to read text helps the reader focus on the causes and effects of brain injury. It offers a positive, comprehensive, realistic approach to repairing and coping with physical, mental and emotional effects of brain injury. A self-help section is available and allows the patient the opportunity to be involved in his own recovery. I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking hope and or healing from mild traumatic brain injury.
Must Have.......2005-03-24
If your dealing with anyone in your life with a brain injury, this book is for you. It helped us understand what was going on and the exercises were a good tool to help in the recovery process. I am so thankfully I found this book. And would highly recommend it to everyone.
It's so nice to know..........2005-02-17
I would just like to say that it's so nice to know that there is more information on brain injuries out there. Not many people know anything about brain injury and even when you try to explain it to someone, they think you're making it up. I felt like this book got into my head and knew exactly what was going on with me. I highly recommend this wonderful book for someone with a brain injury but for people who know someone with brain injury.

Customer Reviews:
Good information, but limited.......2007-10-06
The book describes nutritional ways to combat migraines (trigger foods to avoid) and indicates that one should take magnesium, feverfew, and riboflavin. If that doesn't work, it recommends drugs. The magnesium-feverfew-riboflavin didn't work for me (though I don't doubt it may work well for others). My problem with the book is that there are other supplements that can help. For instance, I read (elsewhere) that taking melatonin can help prevent early morning migraines. This has indeed prevented my early morning migraines. So, I would recommend reading the book, but be advised the information is not comprehensive.
Natural Migraine relief at last!.......2007-08-28
I had been a migraine sufferer for several years when I came across this book. I had previously been seen by several neurologists and offered many different prescriptions, but none of them helped me. (Indeed, one physician threw me out of his practice, insisting my symptoms were either psychosomatic or that I was purposely pretending!) After following the recommendations in this book, I found that the duration, frequency and intensity of my migraines decreased dramatically. It presents a commonsense approach to migraine relief by attacking the source of the body inbalance that causes the migraines in the first place. I believe that all migraine sufferers, whether helped or not by medication, should first utilize the suggestions made by Dr. Mauskop as a foundation of treatment. Even if you are not made completely free of migraine suffering, you most certainly will find your pain much reduced. And if you are lucky, you might be able to avoid those prescribed medications entirely, with all their attendant serious side effects!
WOW! what a Great Book.......2007-04-13
Thank you so much Dr. Mauskop for all of your hard work; that you are doing on migraines. I found this book to be very helpful, and I have a better understanding of migraines. Thank you again for all your time that you put into this book This book is a MUST for everyone; but those that suffer from migraines it is gold in your hands. The approach that Dr. Mauskop shows in this book is very helpful, and anyone can read this book and understand. It is not over someones head, it is for the lay person. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Excellent information about a little-known treatment for migraine sufferers.......2007-04-11
This book supports the use of Magnesium to treat migraines, a treatment option which has unfortunately received little press to date. Author Mauskop reviews specifics about why Magnesium is thought to be effective, citing a significant amount of research which has been done in this area. I actually discovered Magnesium treatment for my own migraines prior to reading this book, and given how helpful it has been for me, I am definitely a believer. What I have not yet tried is Mauskop's "Triple Therapy" recommendation, which involves daily use of Magnesium along with two other substances, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and the herb Feverfew. I do plan to try this recommendation in the hopes of achieving even greater efficacy in treating my own headaches.
The only complaint I have about this book is regarding how it is organized. The author seems to jump around quite a bit--i.e., the relevant discussion of Magnesium appears in various locations throughout the book rather than being more sensibly offered all in one place. Regardless, the information is still readable and extremely valuable, and so I would not hesitate to recommend this book to my fellow migraine sufferers.
Sage advice for migraine sufferers.......2005-11-16
I've been suffering with migraines for over thirty years. I've had to structure my life around coping with them. Over the years I've tried so many things: medicines, diets, managing my eating and sleeping schedule, even some alternative medicine (accupuncture, biofeedback). I found ways to avoid triggers and ride out the migraines, but they were taking their toll on my life, work and family.
For me, medicine didn't help. The various preventative medicines had side effects and didn't seem to help much, and the abortive medicines were ineffective or had side effects worse than the migraines. I'd resorted to regularing my sleep schedule, avoiding my trigger foods and resigning myself to lost weekends and missed work. I'd surrendered to just living with migraines.
Last spring I had a particularly bad rash of migraines and decided to research the most recent treatments on the internet. There were some new drugs and a dietary supplement that I'd not heard of before. Armed with this information, I visited my doctor and we discussed the possibilities. He recommended one medicine but told me I'd need to take monthly blood tests to make sure it wasn't damaging my liver. This was too scary for me, so I asked him about the dietary supplement I'd read about called Migrelief. He shrugged and said go ahead.
I purchased a bottle and though the label said to wait up to 90 days for results, I saw immediate improvement. My migraines have reduced tenfold and suddenly the whole world has opened up for me. I became curious about this miracle treatment and sought out Mauskop's book. It too is a revelation.
Two hours of reading summarized everything I'd learned about managing migraines over 30 years, and more. Tips that took me years of trial and error to discover are plainly spelled out. Simple things like avoiding caffeine, sleep regulation, allergy avoidance and stress management. Lists of trigger foods to monitor. And some basics that are so simple and obvious that most Americans are ignoring them: eat better food and you'll feel better. Avoid unnecessary chemicals. Excercise. Take care of yourself.
You won't see the Magnesium-B2-Feverfew formulation promoted by doctors because doctors are driven by the pharmaceutical industry and the pharmaceutical companies can't make money off of stuff they can't patent. If Glaxo had developed this formulation and put millions of dollars behind an ad campaign, millions of migraine sufferers would be finding relief. But because it is a natural supplement most doctors will overlook it and most migraine sufferers will never know about it. And that's tragic.
Buy this book. Pick up a bottle of Migrelief (right here on Amazon). If the supplements don't help you, likely some other information in the book will. For me, this is a new lease on life.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive yet understandable.......2004-06-19
The book covered a lot of ground, yet was easy to understand and read. You will definitely understand more about the types of problems prolo handles, and how it works. Highly recommended to anybody considering this form of treatment.
Promising but am still somewhat skeptical.......2003-04-09
I have suffered from dire chronic muscular pain in my neck and shoulder and low buttocks regions for well over two years and it's been hell to say the least. I have done everything imaginable to fight this - I have seen three accupuncturists, three massage therapists and four physical therapists, taken NSAIDs, RICE techinques and yet my pain still persists.
One doc i saw had the arrogance of telling me that i had to live with this condition, as yet still undiaganosed. But after a lot of patient persistence, doctor shopping (over 10 docs believe it or not), opening up books like this and a subtle hint from a very kind chinese massage therapist that i had injured ligaments i finally found out that i had upper body myofascial pain syndrome (great sigh of relief) and then i came across ligament reconstruction therapy (aka prolotherapy). Given my persistent nature, i have compiled a countless amount of research on this and this book is one great source of it.
And then came Dr. Hauser's explanation of myofascial pain on page 198 and a light went off in my head. I made an appt to see a prolotherapist (from the getprolo.com referral list), asked him a ton of Qs and eagerly looking forward to my first visit.
One of the problems i have with this book is the lack of information on bad things that can happen as a result of prolotherapy. I realize the authors are enthusiatic about their realm of expertise but in real life there has to be risks for everything we take, the disclaimer glosses over these, it's too bad the authors did not elaborate on what a bad result means.
Nevertheless for me, the risks are well worth taking given the alternatives and living with chronic pain.
Bottom line, do your homework and research this. If it proves effective for me, i will come back and add two more stars.
prolo Miracle!!!.......2003-03-14
I found this book and the treatment of Prolo for my wife. She had suffered for two years after a fall that caused chronic whiplash syndrome. She was off of work for months at a time and had severe headaches, vertigo, insomnia, terrible constant migraines, memory loss, shooting pains in arms, neck, and shoulder, as well as depression. We had mri's, cat scans, x- rays, accupuncture, accupressure, physical therapy, chiro., and nothing helped. Other doctors said there was nothing wrong and she was faking it!!!! Within days of first treatment we knew something was different. Within 6 weeks she was back at work and has been steadily improving. She is about 90% totally healed after four treatments. Insurance did pay about 75% of the cost also. Buy this book if you have chronic pain, buy it today and start to live again!!!! Dr. Hauser is MY personal hero, he gave me back my wife!!!!!!!!!
Costochondritis Sufferer and Skeptic Sees the Light.......2002-01-28
I have suffered with costochondritis or Tietze's Syndrome (which is chronic pain in the chest wall caused by ribs slipping out of position) for over 4 years. The pain has been excruciating at times, and being directly over my heart, has sent me to the emergency room with thoughts of a heart attack.
I had seen many doctors and finally, one suggested prolotherapy, although he didn't do it himself. He suggested I do some research and find a doctor. Well, my research lead to this book which I ordered and read thoroughly in a few days. It is an easy read, although a bit on the "ra ra" side. It did convince me of the logic of the treatment and I am in the early stages of therapy now. I am a bit concerned with the lack of objective information out there, and if that is what you are looking for, this isn't your book. But..... it is a good place to start.
Good luck to everyone out there with chronic pain!!!!
At final, I had decided to translate to Korean, and I did!.......2001-06-08
This is wonderful book to help me open my eyes to the another scope of practice. This book tells what is the Natural & Healing and Cure itself! I had read this book in 1999, I decided to translate it. Finally, "Prolo Your Pain Away" in Korean has just published in May. I hope that Prolo becomes more popular and helps patients suffering from chronic illness.
Book Description
A world-renowned clinician's practical and complete guide to understanding and alleviating neurological pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.
Sciatica is the acute or chronic feeling of pain, hot or cold, numbness, weakness, "electric shocks" or strange sensations, starting near your seat and going down your leg. It is a condition for which some 20 million Americans will seek help this year. Usually neurological, sciatica may originate with a herniated disk, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome, and may be caused by a fall, physical overextension, or being cramped in an airplane or car. In Sciatica Solutions, Loren Fishman, MD, a researcher with twenty-five years of experience, offers help. In easy-to-understand terms, he demystifies the relationship between neurological injury and sciatica, explains the most common causes, and leads you to an exact diagnosis. Boring, trite book. little of value........2007-05-26
Don't waste your money.
Typical book on this subject. Nothing noteworthy.
Moreover writing style is poor is tough to follow
A top pick for libraries seeking a comprehensive yet easy reference........2006-12-11
Sciatica Solutions: Diagnosis, Treatment and Cure of Spinal and Piriformis Problems may sound technical but it's medical knowledge is most accessible to lay readers, making it a top pick for public libraries because of its ease of reference and because back problems are one of the most common medical conditions affecting the general population. Chapters cover symptoms, the neurology involved in the range of complaints sciatica shows, and identify seven primary causes, differentiating it from its related piriformis problems and surveying the treatment for both. Dr. Fishman holds some thirty years of clinical experience including alternative medicine, so his SCIATICA SOLUTIONS embraces the best of both worlds, making it a top pick for libraries seeking a comprehensive yet easy reference.

More than 100 million people around the world suffer from lymphedema, a painful, chronic swelling of the limbs and, sometimes, other areas of the body. At least five percent of women who undergo lymph-node surgery for breast cancer treatment will experience it. Written by a breast cancer survivor and a nurse, Coping with Lymphedema fills a definite need, with facts about diagnostic tests; manual lymph drainage and complete decongestive physiotherapy (CDP); medications, including antibiotics, steroids, and benzopyrones; compression garments; and experimental treatments, including acupuncture, biofeedback, meditation, and herbal medicine.
The authors also debate the merits of various lymphedema therapists, from chiropractors and physiatrists to osteopaths. There's also plenty of information about natural diuretics, important nutrients, helpful exercises for reducing pain and increasing mobility, and methods for handling depression and self-image troubles. More than 100 resources and lists of phone numbers for support groups in most states further the usefulness of this clearly written, comprehensive reference.

Knowledge is thy shield, thy sword and thy comfort........2006-01-10
THE BOOK: 1998; 286pp; 450 resources listed (products, info, practitioners, researchers, schools, support groups); 122 glossary entries; 52 references; ~800 index entries. 43 recommended books listed: Lymphedema(2), cancer(7), general medical(3), alternative medicine(15), diet and nutrition(10), self-help(3).
LYMPHE-WHAT?
Primary (hereditary) Lymphedema (1-in-6000)...may involve blocked/oversized/underdeveloped lymph vessels. More common secondary Lymphedema results from disease/other trauma.
Grade1: Lymphedema often begins with pitting edema - tissues swell due to excess fluid. Small indentations form when pressing with a finger.
Grade2: Lymphedema is chronic, and elevation may no longer help. The skin no longer pits, but hardens as fibrous tissue develops. Thick, coarse skin may ulcerate, and bacteria may enter and bring on extremely painful cellulitis, a soft-tissue skin infection.
Grade3: Lymphedema may be established by repeated attacks of cellulitis as underlying tissue hardens.
DIAGNOSTIC METHODS: tape measure; magnetic resonance imaging; Doppler MRI, lymphangioscintigraphy, color flow Doppler
WHAT INCREASES LYMPHEDEMA VULNERABILITY?
-other family affected
-malformation of veins
-mechanical injuries to lymphatic system
-obesity
-infections impacting lymphatics
-other-leg Lymphedema
-vein surgeries
-lymph node removal
-surgery/treatments...underarm/neck/groin areas
-surgery/treatment for prostate/testicular/colorectal/bladder/pancreatic/liver/skin cancer
-internal scar tissue
-radiation therapy
-chemotherapy(probably)
-Tamoxifen
PREVENTING LYMPHEDEMA BY PREVENTING CANCER:
Numerous books teach cancer prevention, and Mary Kerney Levenstein's Everyday Cancer Risks and How to Avoid Them aptly and broadly does this. (The name, Mary Kerney, or the ISBN, 0895295059, works well in an Amazon search.) Also, impediment to lymph flow by bras is argued as a possible causation for breast cancer in, Dressed to Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras.
PREVENTING OF LYMPHEDEMA OR ITS WORSENING:
-get needed Lymphedema treatment
-prevent all skin penetrations/constrictions involving affected limb/area
-during radiation therapy: examine area, use ointment, avoid chlorinated pools, hot tubs/showers
-during chemotherapy: wear pink wristband on affected limb, get IV/mediport installed in unaffected area.
-during hormone therapy: low-salt, low-protein diet; avoid overheating; avoid water retention.
CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS:
-Staple of medical practice in Europe 100+ years, but recent in U.S.
-Treatment goal: open secondary lymphatic vessels to drain affected limb into normally functioning tributaries.
-Manual lymph drainage, MLD: specialized, sequenced, slow-rhythm, gentle massage pressure that moves lymph fluid.
-Complete/complex decongestive physiotherapy, CDP, may be best (MLD plus scrupulous skin cleansing, plus compression bandages and garments, plus exercise). Nine advantages listed.
---Self bandaging skill necessary due to exercising and airplanes.
---If pregnant, coordinate obstetrician, vascular specialist and Lymphedema therapy expert.
---a compression garment is paramount for reducing swelling and keeping it reduced. Never wear on untreated, swollen limb
---diuretics: Some experts say detrimental. May help if edema plus Lymphedema.
-Pump, newer: peristaltic gradient compression system more closely mimics natural lymph pumping.
---avoid pump if: primary Lymphedema; blood vessel disease; severe arteriosclerosis; massive edema from congestive heart failure; deformity of limb; metastatic cancer in the limb; dermatitis; gangrene; recent skin grafts; deep venous thrombosis; cellulitis(especially).
---should not be used at home
---removes fluid, not protein,...which can become fibrotic and impede lymph flow.
---complications in 30-55% with leg Lymphedema
-Steroids: powerful drugs that can depress immune system, cause water retention and cause mental depression. Occasionally used for inflammation or for enlarged lymph nodes or for tumor obstruction of lymph flow.
-Benzopyrones, in clinical trials in Australia, France, India and China, have improved Lymphedema without compression garments. Minor side effects, but excessive dosage caused liver damage and possibly death. Many US physicians skeptical. National Lymphedema Network and others strongly advise against Benzopyrones. Not FDA approved, but available at 2000 compounding pharmacies stateside.
-Surgery, for the most part, is considered as a last resort - limited success and high risk of complications.
-Injections of a patient's own white blood cells, in one study, rapidly reduced swelling...
-Accessing improved European treatments requires special effort.
-Pain management strategies: monitoring, refitting compression garment, exercise routine, getting help with skin problems, accessing mind-body techniques, discuss with doctor and Lymphedema therapist.
CRITICAL RESEARCH:
The lymph node that receives dye injected around a cancerous tumor drains that tumor and is the "sentinel" and only lymph node requiring removal and examination.
ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS:
Alternative medicine, with an interest in ancient healing practices, focuses on the mind-body connection and on health rather than illness. An alternative remedy may work even if the medical establishment disagrees. (So far the AMA has remained silent on Lymphedma and its treatments.) Alternative (as complementary) medicine enhances the immune system and one's feelings of well-being, both compromised in Lymphedema. Psychoneuroimmunology, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, biofeedback, herbal medicine, homeopathy and meditation are explained.
Is alternative therapy for you? Read a lot; learn practitioner's qualifications; speak with experienced others; monitor progress; report problems; trust your instincts - replace therapist if necessary. For almost all serious cases, using both medical and alternative treatments, along with comprehensive Lymphedema treatment, symptoms lessened, unwanted body fluid decreased, infections decreased, and a relatively normal life returned.
GETTING TREATMENT:
-Choosing Practitioners: Four pages of specific questions for the doctor and Lymphedema therapist
-Choosing Treatment Facility: A good facility is described.
INSURANCE:
Nine strategies, including using attorney, elected state representatives and state insurance committee.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES:
Instructions regarding: survival kit; activity safety; personal care; wardrobe; writing a journal; traveling; aggressive treatment; diet types/helps/caveats; effects of smoking, caffeine and alcohol; recommended exercise types/amounts; specialized exercises;
DEALING WITH YOURSELF AND OTHERS:
-basically an unknown illness - must repeatedly explain.
-family: explain your needs and limitations, and maintain self-compassion; explain to children.
-sexuality: coping skills
-friends: be open, accept help.
-job: illegal to be fired because of ill health - use your union
-job: employer must make reasonable accommodation... ADA
EMOTIONS ADDRESSED:
getting blind-sided, too busy for depression, the mind & the immune system, reactive/clinical depression, anger, fear, self-blame, self-consciousness Even for the most frightening conditions, people often show amazing resilience if they know what is happening, what is entailed, and how to help themselves.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. These 1000 words cannot replace the authors' 100,000 words - do read the book.
2. The 2005 Living Well With Lymphedema by Ehrlich et al is also excellent - neither can replace the other.
Thanks for reading

The best of a mighty thin field..........2004-12-06
First, anyone who is looking for books on lymphedema will find out fast that books on lymphedema are kind of like treatments for the the disorder: mighty few and far between. Of all the available books, this one is the best of a thin, thin crop. There are chapters on the origins of lymphedema, symptoms, the (few) treatments, diet and exercise, coping and other life issues. And while they are very informative, as other reviewers have pointed out, the authors do focus heavily on upper limb lymphedema. Readers with lower limb lymphedema get tossed a bone of info targeted to their needs every now and then, but the primary emphasis of this book is on lymphedema as the result of breast cancer treatment. Still, readers with lower limb lymphedema can take most of the info in this book and apply it to their own situation. This book is better than nothing, which is pretty much what will be available should this book go out of print. It's a pity that a disorder that affects so many people is virtually ignored by the medical and publishing communities.
Reader wanted more.......2000-11-21
This book gave some helpful hints on dealing with the emotions I was having when my arm swelled after treatment for breast cancer, but seemed to say I was just going to have to learn to live with it. In spite of a good resource section, the book left me depressed and feeling hopeless. I have since found another book I use as a "how to" guide and I am managing the selling very well. If you are like me, "Coping with Lymphedema" may not be the most helpful book for you.
I am so happy I found this book.......2000-07-19
This book was very helpful to me. I have had lymphedema for 30 years, and because it is such a rare disorder, it has been impossible to find much information about it. The book exposed many treatment options that I was unaware of previously. Thank you, Joan and Diane, for doing such a wonderful job on the book. I know your book has a limited audience, but we need the information desperately.
Coping with Lymphedema Book.......2000-01-01
Although I commend the authors for addressing an issue that no one else has been able to address through this venue, I find it to be lacking in much information concerning Lymphedema of the lower extremities. While it is true that survivors of breast cancer are at risk for the development of lymphedema those with lower extremity lymphedema have been strugging with it for many years. In other words, lymphedema is not new on the scene. The book adequately addresses the issue of LE in relationship with BC but leaves barely touches on the remainder of the population with LE. I did not enjoy the book and did not find it at all helpful.
