Got Us Lost.......2006-06-29
This book has a great description of the history in the region, but if you want to use it to find restaurants, DON'T. This book got us lost each time we used it to find a restaurant they had written a review about. Twice, they listed restaurants that had closed over a year ago! The Rick Steve's book about Prague is infinitely better and it never got us lost because they update it!

A very helpful travel guide.......2006-02-21
I am planning a trip toi Prague and this book helps so much in my planning.Due to the difficulty understand the Schec langauge, the gu ide will be a great assistance re. hotels, restaurents, and sight-seeing,
Amazingly accurate, well-organized and the right level of detail.......2005-10-24
We loved this book while we were traveling because it didn't overwhelm us with too much detail, like Lonely Planet and gave us recommendations that we really came to trust. We just got back from Prague and the Czech Republic and used this book to take us beyond Prague to Czesky Krumlov to Pilsen and Karlovy Vary, not to mention some amazing castles, including Orlik and Karstejn and used this book to find hotels, restaurants and sites during our 1 week trip. We found that the book was amazingly accurate with its descriptions. For example, we ended up staying in a hotel in Pilsen that the book told us was clean, but had surly service - we found that was perfectly true! The woman at the front desk practically growled at us, but we completely expected it! The book told us that the castle at Orlik "never disappoints" and that was true - we had a wonderful time touring Orlik, and would probably never had visited had the book not recommended it. We were surprised at the level of accuracy that the book's recommendations provided throughout our entire trip. If you are a bit beyond the backpacker's approach to travel, this book is a great way to go. I highly recommend it.
Use Lonely Planet Instead.......2004-07-05
I read this book and then traveled to Prague with the information I thought I had absorbed. Frommer's Prague is incredibly innaccurate and is full of errors. To name a few, the times it lists for castles is incorrect as well as the location of several tourist spots. The guide assumes the train drops one off at the site, when it can lead one several towns astray from the actual location. Furthermore, in terms of times to destinations that guide makes it seem that only a few hours are necessary when one could spend an entire day getting to only one spot. This especially is true for Karstejn Castle and Krivoklat. Please make sure to print maps off the computer before you depend on this book (the book also lacks a great number of necessary maps for tourist spots). Prague and the Czech Republic are not difficult to navigate, but without a good guidebook with maps and relevant information, days and hours are wasted wandering, which leads to ruined adventures.

Buyer Beware...............2003-12-02
After purchasing other Frommer's books and being happy with them, I was extremely disappointed with this one. Much of the information regarding operating hours, costs and locations was incorrect. Also, there were some other places that were omitted entirely. Fortunately, one of the people in my group had the Lonely Planet guide - otherwise we would have missed out.
User beware.......2001-10-30
Use this book with caution. Restaurant reviews are very helpful and the walking tours get you into the tourist parts of town. But don't trust the telephone/fax numbers. Of the three I tried, all were wrong. Overall, worth using though.
ATTENTION! ACHTUNG! ATTENZIONE! ATENCION! ATTENTION!.......2000-10-08
Do not, repeat DO NOT, trust any information found in this book if the correctness of the information is important to your safety or the successful completion of your travel. We trusted the statement on page 9 under ENTRY REQUIREMENTS, where it states that " Americans, British, Irish, Australians, New Zealand, and now Canadian citizens need only passports (no visas) for stays under 30 days." My wife, an Australian, was "disembarked" at the Zurich airport because she did not have a visa. The Czechs require Australians to obtain visas in their country of origin (the US in our case) and THEY MAKE NO EXCEPTIONS! Needless to say, our trip was ruined. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of incompetent reporting of critical data, the edition we purchased was published in 2000, and so was our trip. The Czech visa policy has been in effect for years.
The best guide to Prague.......1999-03-19
Just returned from Prague, and this guidebook was by far the most valuable resource we had. Walking tours and restaurant reviews particularly valuable.

The People Shall Continue....a story of their trials and tribulations..........2006-11-10
I am a teacher, in 1st grade, that has used my copy of this book in November for 12 years in multiple grade settings and i really love it.. It was sold by The Children's Press out of San Fran which put out excellent tales of bi-literacy and stories from minority and immigrant cultures.I hope they still are going strong.
In this story, one that stood the test of time for me, a kind of poetic Prufrock unfolds...a song really of Native American tradition in our world from then to now...a sad song...a flowing tale of bittersweet truths and perseverance....I usually read it with a child gently keeping a rhythm of a drum I was given a few years ago by a Native Sioux family.
What does it teach to make it worth the reading journey?
The relationship to the earth, nature, care of this relationship, responsibility to care for our children and their life spaces and places, the traditions of tribal members in the beginning prior to times when native cultures were literally pulled to pieces(tho that tone is not struck in this sensitive story), the arrival of the white men, the change this wrought, dissension, unrest, new religious practice, relating to the American government, scattering of tribal culture, reservation life, suffering of Native peoples, ultimate desire for unity and peace. It's really an elegy.
Why do I use it? I think this text alone is one of the most powerful ways to try to bring into the primary room a kind of talking back story, a kind of story like understanding about history and past and awareness that will take many years, many stories, many kinds of experiences to be able to fuller absorb and understand. It's a validation of something. It's a story of message, of empowering by acknowledging, it's a story of the kinds of things history can deny or do a great job of telling in another way.
I use it to bring to the story of the first Thanksgiving the story of the giant change these times signaled to Native American's...and to begin talk about indigenous peoples, immigration and all the complexities of societies and communities.
The tone set inside the text is unique...listen...
" But one day, something unusual began to happen.
Maybe there was a small change in the wind.
Maybe there was a shift in the stars.
Maybe it was a dream that someone dreamed.
Maybe it was the strange behavior of an animal.
The People thought and remembered,
"A long time ago, there were Yellow-skinned men
who came upon the ocean to the Western Coasts"
The People Thought and remembered,
"A long time ago , there were Red-haired men who came upon the ocean to the Eastern Coasts"
But these visitors had not stayed for long.
They met with some of the People
and soon they left upon the ocean for their homes.".......
You can see the way the story unfolds the perspectives of these events and allows a teacher to drop in the facts and the fictions, the then , now and the kinds of pieces needed to bring students into awareness of cultural perspectives. It's a treasure, hope you can find and use it with a child..
the people shall continue.......2000-02-23
This book is an excellent and truthfull look into the often sugar-coated history of the American Indian. It has bold pictures, sure to keep the attention of a young reader, that are culturally accurate. The book reads much like it were told in the oral tradition and ends to include all groups of people who have been mistreated and misrepresented over the years by greed and misunderstanding. It is a superb book to introduce to a young reader interested in American history and a phenomenal book for Indigenous readers, young and old alike.

Book Description
This is a completely revised second edition of Design for the Real World, which has since its first appearance twenty years ago, become a classic. Translated into twenty-three languages, it is one of the world's most widely read books on design. In this revised edition, Victor Papanek examines the attempts by designers to combat the tawdry, the unsafe, the frivolous, the useless product, once again providing a blueprint for sensible, responsible design in this world, which is deficient in resources and energy.
Customer Reviews:
Politicizing design .......2006-09-30
Papanek, like his mentor Fuller, took on a guru like status where rhetoric became more important than the reality. He bends facts and contradicts himself several places in this book.
Here are a few that jumped out at me
Misrepresentation of the facts -
Page 89 - The Hyatt collapse wasn't bad design rather the builder changed the construction and inspectors weren't doing their job.
281 - He talks about farm implement companies' negative reaction to his walking tractor proposal. Troy-Bilt Rototiller has around since 1937, was and is building a 10 HP tiller very similar to the one pictured.
Contradicts himself -
Page 6 he says, "Design must be meaningful. And meaningful replaces such semantically loaded expressions as ... "ugly"... "cute"...
Page 93 - he describes gum as "tawdry
Page 246 - He asserts that humidifiers are bad because they are "costly, ugly, and ... wasteful of water"
Granted there are a lot of dangerous, overpriced, impractical, and generally unnecessary products on the market, but except for ranting about what he considers to be wrong, he doesn't offer much in terms of direction to others who want to be socially responsible.
An inspiring book on environmental design.......2004-02-22
I first heard a lecture by Victor Papanek about 20 years ago, shortly before this revised edition was released. He was a very impressive speaker, drawing from a seemingly bottomless well of ecological design ideas. His work has taken him far and wide and in the process allowed him to revamp many of his views on environmental design. This book is an extensively updated version of his seminal book on the subject. It has become a bit dated in the 20 years since its release, especially in regard to computer software design. But, most of the material he covers is still relavent to the present, as we have only begun to scratch the surface of sound ecological ideas.
Having read the more recent books on ecological design by Sim Van Der Ryn and William McDonough, I was surprised to see that neither mentioned Papanek, who prefigured many of the ideas they present in their current books. Papanek long ago advocated the lease/use principle, which makes much more sense in a rapidly changing technological world than does the buy/own principle that continues to dominate our social thinking. Papanek notes the many cultural and psychological blocks we have created for ourselves when it comes to ecological design, but also illustrates how we can overcome these blocks with methods such as bisociation, first proposed by Arthur Koestler. But, what really makes this book stand out are the great number of illustrations that Papanek uses to demonstrate his ideas. This is one of the most practical books written on environmental design.
While Papanek was an industrial designer, his ideas are equally germaine to the field of architecture and biology. He advocated a multi-disciplinary approach, feeling that our universities had become too compartimentalized and were stifling creativity, which needs cross-pollination in order to thrive. The book is as inpiring as his lectures. Papanek challenges the reader to explore new avenues, not continue to follow the status quo, which only results in creative dead-ends.
The Design Bible, Even for Architects.......2001-03-16
I first spotted this book while studying in Denmark last year, where my host parents had studied under Victor Papanek. I would have studied under him at the University of Kansas, if not for his untimely and unfortunate passing. This book is one of the best books on the principles and ethics of design. It illustrates both the designer's responsibility and the potential to affect real change in the world through design. This most renowned of works by Papanek focuses on industrial design in two parts: How It Is, and How It Could Be. Papanek encourages radical thinking in design, and most of the topics in the book are easily translated to architecture. To my knowledge, reading this book has never been a required part of the core curriculum at the School of Architecture and Urban Design here at KU, but in my opinion, it should be.
design ethics.......2001-02-26
one of the best books on design ethics till date!
The Book All Designers Should Read.......2000-05-19
It has been many years since I read this important book. I hope this book will be made a compulsory read for all design students. If only more designers would adopt Mr Papanek's approach to socially-responsible design, the world will be a much better place to live in.
