These Are Stories That You Won't Forget.......2002-02-14
This is a diverse collection of literature for animal lovers. Many of the pieces were written by some of our most gifted writers. Some of these are poems and short stores and others are excerpts taken from longer books.
Here's a sampling of some of my favorite selections: In A SNAPSHOT OF REX, James Thurber remembers his American Bull Terrier who was "a tremendous fighter", and completely loyal to Thurber and his two brothers - Cleveland Armory tells about a stray cat who needed rescuing in THE CAT WHO CAME FOR CHRISTMAS - John Steinbeck's dog , Charley was the best of companions in TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY - in GORILLAS IN THE MIDST, Dian Fossey relates anecdotes about a monkey named Kima, who with Primus, an antelope shared their space with her dog, Cindy, a boxer mix - and in a remarkable story, Rudyard Kipling writes about an extremely intelligent dog who's master gave him as a gift to another man to repay a debt in GARM-A HOSTAGE.
There are also selections from Jack London, Willie Morris, and Ernest Hemingway. Very enjoyable reading!
Classic Animal Stories.......2002-02-03
If you're looking for a good book of animal stories to curl up with by the fire this would be a good choice. The authors are all old favorites and include Cleveland Amory, Jack London, May Sarton, Farley Mowat, John Steinbeck, Dian Fossey and Ernest Hemingway. In that respect, the book is a little too predictable for anyone who has done much reading in the genre. Like me, you will undoubtedly recognize Sarton's "Fur Person," Kipling's "Garm-A Hostage," Amory's "The Cat Who Came to Christmas," and London's "White Fang." However, there were some pleasant surprises, such as the poetry by Walt Whitman, Floyd Skloot and Robert Graves, and the fact that I had read about Mowat's adventures with his wolves didn't make me enjoy them any less.
Expect no great surprises or revelations, with the possible exception of Diane Ackerman's close encounter with a right whale. Even the excerpt from Barry Lopez's ordinarily luminous prose is merely a short, ho hum essay on land ownership. This is bascially a feel good book (best to keep kleenex at your side), and if you take it as such, you won't be disappointed.

helpful and portable.......2007-10-14
I hve always been a of Lonely planet, and this book is no exception. The size is easy to carry around and it is filled with great information. The only down side is that there is little information on public transportation and the maps are only okay. Over all, the good wins and I found this book to be very useful. While walking down the street one day we even ran into the musicians pictured on the cover!
Very useful.......2007-09-16
A great guide to the city for a first-timer. The walking tours were very useful in my exploration, and the recommendations were usually on point. The only problem was the restaurant recommendations, where many were full of tourists, all using the LP guide. But that's a minor problem for a useful, comprehensive guide to the city. I spent four days there and had a blast.
Very helpful.......2007-08-15
This book was small enough to carry around the whole time which is a big plus compared to those other bulky books. The map in the back wasn't detachable but it still really helped me in getting around. It very good in recommending what to see, how to walk around the city, and how long it would take to do all the things. I highly recommend this book.
Great Pocket Guide.......2007-05-12
This slim volume contains pretty much all you need for a short trip to Budapest. There are plenty of maps, albeit very small. The highlights section is nice as well as the photographs and suggestions for walking tours. A great little carry along.
Excellent Literate Guide.......2006-07-20
I travel extensively and, after long experience, I find the Lonely Planet guides the best, so I now buy them automatically and am never disappointed. Still, they do vary in quality. The Budapest guide, however, is among the best.
I appreciate how well this guide is written. The introduction, which sets the tone for the book, is literate and is good writing, as writing. The history chapter, not too long, but also not too superficial for this type of book, gave me an insight into Hungary that I found invaluable in enjoying my five-day visit to Budapest. Although the edition is several years old (I think a new one is about to come out), it was amazingly up-to-date and accurate. I followed several of the walking tours in the guide, and they were all well thought out and enjoyable, with a great deal of relevant information about the sights I saw.
In short, this is about as good as a general travel guide gets.

Useful information and well organized.......2007-06-26
Lonely Planet books are always fairly well organized and this edition of Hungary is no exception. The information is current and doesn't neglect any corner of this very interesting and beautiful country. The book contains information to satisfy a wide range of interests; everything from those interested in winery tours to those looking for a relaxing beach vacation at Europe's largest lake, Lake Balaton. Likewise, the book nicely balances the needs of those who travel by rail, bus or by their own rented car, as we did. One small complaint, not the author's fault, is Lonely Planet's editorial decision to omit good photos, other than the few esoteric token photos near the center of the book. I suppose there is an editorial struggle between pretty pictures versus content, but it can be frustrating if tackling a country such as Hungary where you have no apriori knowledge of the various landscapes in different regions of the country. A picture is in fact worth a thousand words, but Lonely Planet simply does not see it that way. Perhaps pick up the DK guide for photos to inspire and guide your trip planning for Hungary.
Excellent book with up-to-date and accurate informations.......2007-06-07
I have visited Budapest and more than five towns around it last summer, and have used this book extensively as my only guide to the country.
It was of great help, in it you can find everything you will need to get the full experience of the country, including historical informations, sites to visit, maps, well choosed recommendations of restaurants and bars, informations about accommodation, transport and people.
I can recommend this book to everyone who wants to visit and learn about Hungary.
Accomodation info already out of date.......2005-09-07
Although this edition was only published 2 years ago, the accomodation sections in various towns is already quite out of date . I suppose the accomodation situation changes quite rapidly in Hungary, even the 2005 edition of LP Eastern Europe has much more up to date accomodation info for Hungary, altough as a whole it has less info on Hungary of course.
Great Resource on Hungary.......2004-11-11
I lived in Hungary for a while, and this is a great resource for traveling around the country. The author captures the Hungarian spirit and quirkiness quite well, and the reviews of the restaurants, hotels, and attractions are usually accurate.
I do caution people that the information isn't as accurate if you're traveling to any of the minor cities. I lived in Szombathely, and many of the hotels and restaurants don't exist any more, and the attractions are rather... er, not quite as they are portrayed.
Also be aware that the train schedules change every January, so even if the guide says a certain leaves from Keleti or Deli, this may not be the case. Verify everything before you can make travel arrangements.
Concise (Cultural/Historical/Educational) Complete Guide.......2003-12-27
While the internet is virtually an (almost) unlimted source for information about any country, it is also an overload of too much information ... that is when you need a guide to help you sort it all out. Lonely Planet does *just* *this* for anyone who is interested in visiting and touring Hungary. I have been to Hungary three times in the past five years and was delighted to discover this wonderful book. While my primary purpose was to visit relatives, the opportunity to visit historical sites and experience the culture is always foremost in my mind. Since most vacations are limited to 2, 3 or 4 weeks - you need to know where to find what interests you and make the most of your European vacation. This is the primary purpose of this book.
Lonely Planet tells you about restaurants, hotels (and their prices), entertainment, folklore events, art galleries, museums, castles, and churches, too -- giving a very good description of *nearly* everything of historical or cultural interest in the major cities and towns of Hungary. There are some very nice photographs, too. I was most impressed by their including information about transportation, buses, the metro and the trains. You are given an indespensible synopsis and outline of "what you need to know" of how to get "where you want to go." Budapest is described in vivid detail - the charm of this old world capital is evident - anyone unfamiliar with its treasures is enticied to visit. I have visited, Szekesfehervar, Veszprem, Sarvar, Szombathely, Gyor, Sumeg, Koszeg, Csesznek, Zirc, Mor, and at Lake Balaton: Siofok, Keszthely, Tihany & Badacsony -- all described beautifully for what they offer the tourist. Of note, there are highlighted boxes which give special information, hard to find elsewhere, for instance, "Herend Porcelain" is featured, giving a brief history of this art and a description of some patterns. "The Victoria pattern of butterflies and wild flwoers of the Bakony was designed for Queen Victora after she admired a display of Herend pieces at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851." (page 228)
Another major plus to this guide, is it gives an accurate, scholarly and well researched brief history of Hungary in about 10 pages. I have read recently published history books about Hungary - Lonely Planet got it right! So if you are looking for a concise, cultural, historical, educational complete guide to visiting Hungary - buy this book. My highest accolades to this guide! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

lovely and real.......2005-08-27
I loved this book and keep it available to share with young friends.
Grossman masterfully achieves directness and realism without heavy-handedness, with the juxtaposition of yellow bomb equipment and sunny summer drinks, Jewish Israel's blue and Arab Israel's green.
The author's reflection of Israel's reality resonated very much with my own experience there.
A helpful introduction to a diverse culture whose usual media image is only blood and fear.
Positive & clear-eyed.......2004-08-01
This book uses a simple but effective framework of colors to introduce elements of life in Israel. The writer acknowledges the role that Israel plays in other religions, but her approach is firmly rooted in a Jewish milieu.
Colors of Israel is a good addition to any child's library, and is particularly suitable for Jewish children.
The Colors of Israel is a Beautiful Tapestry.......2004-04-23
The Colors of Israel is the first book in the Colors of the World series I have read and as a teacher, I am now ready to recommend this book and the series to my students.Although I am quite knowledgable about Israel(I lived there for 12 years),I was quite pleasantly surprised by the type of information Ms.Grossman chose to include. This is not your usual superficial blue and white,Hava Nagilah description of life in Israel. Rather,Ms Grossman offers a realistic tapestry, accessible to children,of everyday life in the always colorful, yet incredibly complex,Holy Land. I was struck by the creativity of the choices of where each color can be found, from the pink of the raspberry drink to the black of the Dead Sea mud to the green of a door leading to an Arab home. A child reading this book surely will understand the uniqueness of Israel and hopefully will be curious enough to want to learn even more. This book gives me hope-it presents Israel as a vibrant, interesting, fun country with a diverse population. Yes, a child reading this learns about the reality(yellow is for the robot that blows up suspicious objects)but the reality also includes the other colors of everyday life and yes, that everyday life includes different types of Jews,Arabs, and Christians.I recommend this book to anyone who wants a child to learn about the wonder of the most special place in the world,Israel.
Good intro/ recommended.......2004-04-09
I must have read a different book than the previous reviewer, who seems to find something anti-Israel under every rock. As one who visits friends and family in Israel each year and closely follows the news, I found this book to be quite good. Further, my kids, who speak Hebrew, like it and it's helped prepare them for an upcoming family visit to Israel. Moslems and Christians and Jews, like myself, believe different things. But we all do share a passion for the sacred Land of Israel. I have strong, strong positive feelings about the Jewish claim. I always look for good ways to explain to kids this very complex situation. I think this book is a good one. I recommend fellow educators look at it for themselves and decide. I'll buy it, and won't be afraid of explaining to my kids that even though some people do mean things to our relatives in Israel, that our job is to defend ourselves while not hating them.
Misleading.......2003-12-16
The tone of this book is set on the first page, with a map showing "Israeli-controlled territory," and a statement that both Islam and Christianity have claims to Israel. The second page follows this theme with a statement that Muslims believe that their prophet rose to heaven from Jerusalem. The next section of text discusses Arab wedding ceremonies and other Arab cultural institutions. Two pages later is a statement about terrorism in Israel, which in its entirety is the following: "Different national groups disagree about who should be living in Israel. Some people, called terrorists, believe that frightening citizens is a way to bring about change. ... Most people want to stop terrorism." No word about who these terrorists are -- are they Israelis? The next page is about B'nai Akiva, whose purpose, we are told, is to "discuss Israeli values," such as bringing more immigrants to Israel "and the settling of land." Full of code words, this book is a bad choice. Much better books are "A Ticket to Israel," by Marcia Gresko, and "Enchantment of the World: Israel," by Martin and Stephen Hintz.

Book Description
Very few diaspora Palestinians have written memoirs as intimate as Ghada Karmi's frank account of her life: her childhood in Palestine, the flight to Britain after the catastrophe of 1948, and coming of age in the coffee-bars of Golders Green, the middle-class Jewish quarter in North London. A gentle humour describes the bizarre and sometimes tense realities that mask her life in 'Little Tel Aviv' and, later, her struggle, like that of many other women in the late fifties, to get a university grant to study medicine.
The intimacy of the book is set against the continuing crisis in the Middle East. In her case it is not an account of physical hardships and abuse. Her immediate family was lucky. But as she grew older, memories of the lost homeland began to haunt her. Her anger grows at the self-deception of most Israelis, who justify the appalling actions of their governments by pretending that what is taking place isn't actually happening.
In Search of Fatima reminds us that the only crime the Palestinians committed was to be born in Palestine. Its author, a committed physician, is desperate for the wounds to heal, but grim-visaged History refuses to oblige.
Customer Reviews:
On Identify, Gender, England and being a Palestinian Refugee.......2006-09-02
This is truly an outstanding work. The search and confusion of identity is made even more difficult when one is a Palestinian refugee. Add to this the issue of gender and Ghada Karmi assertion of herself and her rights and you get a fascinating indeed thrilling mix. The first third of the book deals with the exodus from Jerusalem ..it is very moving and sad to see the events rushing to make little Ghada and her family refugees. In the next part we see Ghada the British emerging and finally with all the contradiction between home, school (with mostly Jewish friends) and the society at large especially with backdrop of the 1956 Suez war. The third and final part is the return and the contradictions of identities and the battle to assert herself as a single woman working for the cause. Ghada's move from the completely apolitical to the activist as part of her search of identity is very well nuanced and gives us a great insight into the meaning of being a Palestinian refugee.
Ghada Karmi is a gifted writer. This work is fascinating enough even if it was given as bullet points in a PowerPoint presentation, but this is hardly the case. Karmi has a facility with prose and is able to get into great detail to transform the readers into her life; this was very much the case in the fist part of the book, the exodus from Jerusalem. You can almost picture Ghada abandoned dog as their car sped away from the house never to return.
This is a thrilling work on par with Leila Ahmad Border Passage. Leila Ahmad an Egyptian American was not a refugee but here Tri-cultural experience in Egypt, England and America and her search of identity and issues of gender are very interesting and highly developed. Another highly recommended work of a Palestinian American is Nadia Captive of Hope, deals with exodus and gender issues and less so of identity.
Inside the mind of a dislocated Palestinian.......2006-03-03
This book is like a narrative of two different lives: the end of one and the beginning of another. Two lives that are not independent of each other though, as remnants of the one may not be overpowering to the point of eliminating the other, but are certainly powerful enough to haunt it, shape it, give it its final form.
Although in essence totally overwhelmed by emotions, Karmi manages to almost detach and distance herself from her own being, leave her body and float above everything and everyone. That way she describes people, situations and feelings in a detailed and factual fashion, devoid of the empathy that would crush the reader, immerse him in a whirlwind of unfulfilled expectations and unrelieved tension, and ultimately leave him feeling nothing short of miserable and exhausted.
Throughout the entire book, there's a marked emphasis on Karmi's relationships with other Jews, the friendships she formed and her refusal to see them in any other way than as individuals with traits that were or were not compatible, likable or acceptable to her. She almost goes out of her way to make clear that Jewishness never hindered her from befriending someone and not only that, but in an unfamiliar environment such as London was in the aftermath of the second World War, Palestinians and Jews that found themselves stranded there were entities that shared the misfortune of exile, and as such could indeed relate to one another. Moreover, the fact that Judaism was as much a respected as a familiar religion for Muslims, much more so than Christianity, played a role. As did the writer's initial stance, adopted by her parents and passed onto her from an early age, that it wasn't so much the Jews that were responsible for the Palestinians' fate and the violent takeover of their country, as ultimately the British, who as custodians of Palestine had the obligation to protect and safeguard the interests of the indigenous population. Instead, they forsook and betrayed them, and disposed of the Palestinian land -that was never theirs to dispose of in the first place- as served their purposes at the time.
Karmi experiences an internal conflict, wavering between her British identity and her Arab origins, desperately longing to be accepted by and fit in either society. She often describes the war that rages inside of her, the opposite forces pushing and pulling, on the one hand the need to put everything behind her and lead as normal a life as possible, and on the other the need to seek out her roots and fight with all her might the injustice that was meted out to her.
This book is so much more that a simple memoir, as it goes deep inside the mind of people who experience exile and dislocation, and gives a picture of the psychological turmoil they find themselves in and the void they will probably never be able to fill.
To be a palestnian refugee.......2005-12-23
This is a wonderful book that shows the humnan tragedy of becoming a refugee. In this case, the book talks about a refugee of the 1948 war for Palestine. While the book explains how the creation of the state of Israel have shattered the lives of three quarter million palestnians, it tells the story of one of them. The story of personal conflicts that face any palestnian refugee now, then and in the future:
- Can I return to Palestine and where is it now?
- How can I stay palestnian and at the same time contribute to my current non-palestnian community?
- Do I have the capacity to forgive israelies for what they did to my family and country?
While Ghada's responses to these questions were positive, and she insisted to find an answer to these questions, it is the role of each palestnian to find his/her own answers. Also, it is the role of non-palestnians to understand the palestnian refugee before addressing their plight. Therefore I highly recommend this book.
Interesting.......2003-10-21
I found this book to be of assistance to my desire to learn more about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Even though it is a Palestinian story, it has given me enough interesting information to continue my research.
What happened to Palestine and the Palestinians.......2003-08-16
This is an excellent and thoughtful book that takes the reader through the events that led to the destruction of Palestine and forced hundreds of thousands of people, like Fatima and her family from their homes. For many Palestinians, reading this book relives memories of a tragedy that so many of us have suffered and so little of the American public knows. I highly recommend it as an introduction to Palestine and the origin of the conflict between Palestinians and Israel.
The second half of the book which deals with the protagonist's search for identity in England is also very characteristic of what the Palestinian families who were forced to emigrate to different countries all over the world have to face: complete assimilation versus living in the injury done to us by the creation of the Israeli state.
There is no need for "the other viewpoint" in this book. This is the personal story of a Palestinian in the Palestine-Israeli conflict. Ms. Karmi does not need to justify the Israeli's feelings, although I think she actually tried.
Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors in Israel face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors to Israel? How important is Israel compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors vary from one country of origin to another in Israel? On the supply side, Israel also exports color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors. Which countries receive the most exports from Israel? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors in Israel. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors for those countries serving Israel via exports, or supplying from Israel via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Israel fits into the world market for imported and exported color television receivers, video monitors, and projectors. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Israel in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Israel is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Israel compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Journalistic essays on Judaism .......2004-12-09
These journalistic essays on Judaism cover a wider variety of subjects. He writes on Torah and Talmud, on Ritual and Custom in Judaism, on Hasidism,on distinguished individuals like Harry WA.Wolfson, Salo Baron and Solomon Zeitlin, on Yiddish as a language, on Jewish Authors and Artists. He has an essay on Aharon Applefeld and on Jewish Museums, Tours, the Promised Land. And much else.
These are pleasurable and informative pieces. A very good book.
