    Book Description

Desertification has occurred worldwide. The biophysical and socio-economic complexity of this phenomenon has challenged our ability to categorize, inventory, monitor and repair the condition of degraded lands. One of the most important distinctions to be made in relation to land degradation is between cultivated land used for annual crop production and `rangelands'. Grazing by free-roaming livestock is the traditional primary use of the world's rangelands. However, there is growing recognition of the importance of these vast acreages for wildlife habitat, hydrology and ground water recharge, recreation and aesthetics.
This text focuses on the desertification of rangelands and explores processes, problems and solutions. Chapters in the first section evaluate interactions between `natural' and human-induced disturbance regimes, thresholds, and non-linear change with respect to vegetation, hydrology, nutrients and erosion. Chapters in the second section examine socio-economic constraints and approaches for preventing and reversing degradation.
The book provides a contemporary, process-oriented perspective on rangeland degradation of value to students, policy-makers and professionals alike.

      Description:
Bufflelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare syn. Cenchrus ciliaris) is an African grass that has been widely introduced in subtropical arid regions of the world to improve rangelands for cattle production. However, it can have a negative effect on the diversity of native plant communities. Buffelgrass was introduced to Sonora, Mexico in the 1970s as a means to bolster the cattle industry. ''Desmonte,'' the process by which native desert vegetation is removed in preparation for buffelgrass seeding, alters the land surface such that buffelgrass plots are easily detectable from aerial and Landsat satellite images. We estimated the extent of conversion to buffelgrass in a 1,850,000ha area centered on Hermosillo, from MSS and TM images from 1973, 1983, 1990 and 2000. We then compared the relative above-ground productivity of buffelgrass to native vegetation using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index values (NDVI) from Landsat and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) satellite sensor systems. Buffelgrass pastures have increased from just 7700ha in 1973 to over 140,000ha in 2000. Buffelgrass pastures now cover 8% of the land surface in the study area. Buffelgrass pastures have lower net primary productivity, estimated by MODIS NDVI values, than unconverted desert land. The desmonte process removes trees and shrubs, while the buffelgrass plantings are often sparse, leading to an apparent net loss in net primary production from land conversion. We recommend that the desmonte process be discontinued until its efficacy and safety for native ecosystems can be established, and that a comprehensive plan for preserving biodiversity while accomodating economic development be established for this region of the Sonoran Desert in Mexico.

        Description:
The large global extension of arid and semi-arid regions together with their widespread degradation give these areas a high potential to sequester carbon. We explored the possibilities of semi-arid ecosystems to sequester carbon by means of rangeland exclusion and afforestation with Pinus ponderosa in NW Patagonia (Argentina). We sampled all pools where organic carbon accumulates in a network of five trios of adjacent grazed, non-grazed and afforested stands (age: 12-25 years, density 605-1052treesha^-^1). After 15 years since trees were planted, afforestation added ~50% more C to the initial ecosystem carbon pool, with annual sequestration rate ranging 0.5-3.3MgCha^-^1 year^-^1. Carbon gains in afforested stands were higher above than below-ground (150% vs. 32%). Root biomass differences (374% more in afforested vs. grazed stands, p=0.0011) explained below-ground carbon contrasts whereas soil organic carbon showed no differences with afforestation. By contrast, grazing exclosures did not result in significant changes in the total carbon storage in comparison with the adjacent grazed stands (p=0.42) suggesting a slow ecosystem recovery in the time frame of this study (~15 years of exclusion). Nevertheless, higher litter amount was found in the former (+53%, p=0.07). Neither, soil organic carbon nor root carbon showed significant differences between grazed and non-grazed conditions. Considering that more than 1.1 millions of hectares of the studied ecosystems are highly degraded and suitable for tree planting, afforesting this area could result in a carbon sequestration rate of 1.7Tg C year^-^1, almost 6% of the current fossil fuel emissions of Argentina; however environmental consequences which could emerge from this deep land use shift must be taken into account when afforestation program are being designed.

          Description:
A great many debates have grown up around the notion of desertification as a process of degradation that affects the arid, semi-arid and sub-humid zones of the globe. A fundamental and continuing debate has been over whether desertification actually exists and, if so, how it might be defined, measured and assessed. Rather than simply review the evolution of these debates we examine the contexts in which they take place and how those contexts have contributed to the evolution of our understanding of the intertwined processes that contribute to desertification. The fact that these contexts have changed over time, combined with the fact that some of them are often ignored have both helped to sustain debate. We consider four contexts that frame much of the debate and consider what impact each has had: (1) changes in our understanding of climate variability; (2) changes in our understanding of vegetation responses to perturbation; (3) changes in our understanding of social processes, including household responses to economic perturbation; and (4) changes in our understanding of desertification as a political process or artifact.

            Description:
We conducted a grazing experiment from 1992 to 1996 in Inner Mongolia to explore desertification processes of sandy rangeland. The results show that continuous heavy grazing results in a considerable decrease in vegetation cover, height, standing biomass and root biomass, and a significant increase in animal hoof impacts. As a result, small bare spots appeared on the ground and later merged into larger bare areas in the rangeland. Total bare area reached up to 52% and the average depth of wind erosion was 25cm in the fifth year of the study. We conclude that sandy rangeland with wind-erodible soil is susceptible to desertification. Heavy grazing of such rangeland should be avoided.

              Description:
A simple theory of 'desertification' is found inadequate for understanding the complexity, diverse patterns and flexibility of farmers' responses to change in environmental conditions and population growth in the Sahel. These include long-term transitions in farming practices, in management of natural resources and in income diversification. This paper reviews evidence relating to deforestation, woodland and rangeland degradation to show that in certain areas, a transition to intensified land use, although initially involving a loss of woodland, has led to the planting or protection of useful trees on farms and maintained biomass levels. Livestock numbers have been maintained, despite declining rainfall and loss or apparent degradation of rangeland, by development of more integrated livestock, arable and marketing systems. The possibility of these trends having impact on Sahelian 'greening' is discussed.

                Description:
Camel grazing is recognized as a primary cause of ecological degradation in the UAE. A study of perennial plant species <1m in height was conducted along a fence separating continuously camel grazed land from land in which camels had been replaced by oryx and gazelle species for 5 years (Al Maha). Vegetation regeneration in Al Maha in the absence of camels was considerable on all substrates (gravel, stable sand, and semi-stable sand) but was greatest on the gravel substratum, indicating that ecology in this habitat is most at risk. Observed regeneration was primarily through vegetative reproduction and growth of existing plants, showing that existing species can tolerate heavy grazing. Therefore, an equilibrium grazing model of continuous and reversible vegetation dynamics is most suitable for management of this ecological zone. Species richness was greater in Al Maha due to the greater number of plants, but biodiversity was unaffected. There was some evidence of localized dune stabilization within Al Maha due to increased vegetative cover. Further recovery of vegetation within Al Maha is discussed. This study highlights the need for reduced grazing pressure throughout the Dubai inland desert, and in particular on gravel substrata.

Recently, Batabyal and Godfrey (J. Range-Manage. 55 (2002) 12) have used a discrete-time Markov chain model to analyse the problem of rangeland management under uncertainty. In the present note, I continue this line of inquiry. In particular, I first show how the technique of first step analysis can be used to derive a time-based objective function for a range manager. Next, I discuss aspects of the decision problem faced by a range manager who wishes to optimize the above objective function and thereby minimize the cost to society from range desertification.

I used the 1999 edition of this book to plan my honeymoon in Cabo San Lucas in June of 2000. Based on the book's stellar review of Solmar Suites, we reserved an ocean view room there for the duration of our two week stay in Cabo.

We were VERY disappointed with Solmar. While the grounds, pool and restaurant at this hotel were nice, our room was awful. How so?

-A concrete slab was used in place of a box spring for our bed.
-There were several cockroaches in our room.
-There was no refrigerator, as indicated in the room description.
-Furnishings were very outdated, and unattractive.
-The drain in our shower didn't work, and kept backing up.
-Hotel management was unresponsive when we complained, in spite of the fact that we indicated we were there on our honeymoon.
-While Frommer's said Solmar's fishing fleet was "first rate", we found their boats and equipment to be very outdated.

The whole experience made me think that someone at Solmar must have given Frommer's a big, fat pay-off in order to get the review they were given. I couldn't think of any other reason this place would have been so highly regarded.

Ever since then, when I travel, I use FODOR'S travel guides - not FROMMER'S. I've found Fodor's reviews to be right on the money, and if I had taken their advice (staying, perhaps, at the Westin on the corridor), our honeymoon would have been a much nicer experience.

I hope you find this review helpful. If I can save even one person from the nightmare we experienced, I'll be very pleased.

                  Book Description

According to Ken Blanchard and Jesse Stoner, vision does not have to be magical or intangible, bestowed only by great leaders. Everyone is capable of creating a vision and bringing it to reality. Full Steam Ahead! shows how. This practical and inspiring guide uses an entertaining story about two people who are each struggling with the need for vision. Readers journey with them as they discover the three elements of a compelling vision and the guidelines to create a shared vision that unleashes energy and potential. An appealing, easy-to-read book, Full Steam Ahead! clarifies the differences between an enduring vision and a time-bound goal; shows how to create a sustaining vision that will provide focus, energy, and direction over time; and presents a foolproof plan for engaging people in organizations to become involved in shaping a vision that resonates with their own hopes and dreams.

Very good and practical. This time the story is actually interesting, rather than a lame backdrop. The lady who reads the audio book does an outstanding job. All in all very good.

5 out of 5 stars This book will help when you think about goals for the new year!.......2006-12-06

The transformational power of a compelling vision in one's life or business is compared in this book to the impact of the steam engine on modern industrialization. Like the first steam locomotives or steamships, "full steam ahead" means "being fully powered, knowing where you're going, and moving ahead full force."

Ken Blanchard and Jesse Stoner use this analogy throughout the book to emphasize the power of a strong vision, or purpose, and the commitment to stay on course and achieve that vision despite obstacles. Written in the storytelling style reminiscent of Blanchard's best-selling book The One Minute Manager, this book has a style different from most others in the general business category. It reads more like a novel, in which the two main characters apply the principles of creating a vision for their lives and their business. The concept of developing a compelling vision is taught through the revelations of a company owner trying to put the spark back into his company's vision and an employee trying to establish a personal family vision to improve her relationship with her children.

The book focuses on three key elements of an effective vision: purpose, values, and a picture of the future. It refers to the Apollo Moon Project to illustrate the distinction between a goal and a vision: "a vision is enduring." It advises readers to "focus on the end result, not the process for getting there." It also offers a checklist to use to test whether a vision is compelling.

The book was inspired by years of experience with organizations, which uncovered the fact than "less than 10 percent of organizations . . . had a clear purpose, a set of operating values, or a picture of the future." Blanchard is a renowned speaker. author of more than thirty bestselling business books, and owner of The Ken Blanchard Companies. Stoner, also a respected speaker, consultant, and author, is president of Seapoint Center, established to provide training in personal and professional leadership and vision creation.

While it seems that as much of the book is spent developing the characters as discussing the elements of vision, the story is successful in holding the reader's attention and clearly getting the point across. Like the dream of Martin Luther King that still lives on, "the mark of a true visionary leader is that the vision continues beyond the lifetime of the person who articulated it."

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended! For both your work and for your personal life........2006-08-09

I read Full Steam Ahead! for the second time this week. I had originally purchased the book last winter because my boss wanted us to create a shared vision. Everyone in our department read the book and then we followed the process described by the authors. It has been an amazing experience for all of us. I saw my boss shift from someone who had good intentions but tended to be over-controlling and mistrustful to someone who was willing to let all us to take charge and make decisions. Because we all shared the same vision and values, we all began to trust each other more also. The atmosphere at work is, well... all I can say is I look forward to going to work each day. We have fun and are more productive than ever. The quality of our work has increased immeasurably and we get great feedback from our customers.

Which leads me to why I read the book again. The first time I read it, I read it to get the instructions and learn the concepts for how to create a vision at work. Having lived the results, I decided to read it again to see how I could improve my own life. I remembered there was advice in the book for how to apply it at a personal level, but hadn't paid a lot of attention to it at the time. After finishing the book, I realized that I have been doing a lot of these things. So that was confirming. And it helped me get a sense of what else I need to be doing. Here are a few of the ideas from the book that I think are very helpful-- but you really should read the book because there are so many more helpful ideas than I could write about here. And, it's a fun, easy book to read!

                  1. Purpose: As human beings, a deep sense of purpose gives our lives more meaning. Some people find their purpose through religion. Others through social service. Others through arts and other forms of self-expression. We are each unique individuals and no one can tell us what our purpose is. We need to discover it ourselves. Putting it into words and writing it down, helps us to get clear and to stay focused on our purpose. It may take time to get clear about your purpose. Write something down, read it over time, revise it as things become more clear.

                  2. Values: We are hold deeply beliefs about what is right and wrong. When we are clear about our values and consciously use them to guide us, we make decisions that we feel good about living with. It is important to identify the top 3 to 5 values.

                  3. Picture of the future: It's not enough to just be clear about our purpose and values. It is powerful to close your eyes and imagine what it looks like when you are fulfilling your purpose and living your values. Sports trainers understand the power of mental imagery to enhance performance. Creating pictures of what it actually looks like forces us into a proactive mindset that enables us to move forward more easily.

                  4. Goals are only milestones. They are short-term. Don't confuse them with your vision. You may need to change goals as your circumstances change. Your vision is something that will guide you over time. It may change, but mostly to become more clear.

                  5. Take action. As you take a step, the next one will become clear. As you become clear about your values, live by them. As you become clear about your purpose, find ways to fulfill it. You can plan forever. Living is about acting. Mistakes are inevitable. The only problem with mistakes is when you don't learn from them. If you learn from them, then set your sights again on your vision and set your path again.

                  5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2005-05-19

Full Steam Ahead! is the best book I've read this year. My husband and I own our own business. After both reading the book, we sat down together and created a vision for our business. It was exciting and helped us get really focused. We were then able to discuss it with our employees. Their ideas made our vision even richer. And, to our delight, created an amazing amount of energy. We are all working so much better together now. I can't say more. You need to read the book yourself and then you'll understand.

However, I would like to add that we also created a vision for our family with our two children (ages 11 and 15). Once again, it was an amazing experience. The kind of discussion we had was so different from anything than we had done before. It really helped us all understand and appreciate each others' viewpoints better and to also understand how much we share the same values. (Big relief!)

So, even if you are not in business, I highly recommend this book! It can be used in so many ways.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, practical, useful!.......2005-01-30

Full steam ahead is a phenomenal book. It was critical to my understanding of vision. Prior to reading to this book, my understanding of vision was fuzzy at best, limited to what I know in scripture. Of vision, scripture states (Habakkuk 2:2) that we should write the vision and make it plain upon tables that he that reads it might run with it. The Hebrew word for vision, `chazown', indicates that the vision is a mental picture. Beyond that, I had never been clear on the elements of a vision, neither did I have a clear idea of how to craft a vision statement.

Now I understand that vision is all about knowing who you are (clear purpose), where you are going (picture of the future), and what will guide your journey (values). Your values guide you when you hit opposition or obstacles. I have been able to use these concepts and others presented in the book to craft a vision that is energizing and provides focus and direction. I have been able to explain it so that others want to support me. And, I have been amazed at the results.

Thank you, Ken Blanchard and Jesse Stoner for writing this book. You have offered a valuable service in helping people learn how to go Full Steam Ahead!

Don't waste your time with this book. This book does not cover electric steamers. It doesn't even mention how to adapt the recipes to an electric steamer. Some recipes are a bit difficult to understand because it is poorly written. The pictures are great - that is the only thing good about this book.

if you are looking for helpful tips and everyday recipes. I was a little bit disappointed. Instead of full page pictures I would like to have found about spicing up steamed food generally. It will get a good place in my cookbook library but I doubt that I will use it much

Here are imaginative recipes that can be prepared with a minimum of fuss. Steaming is a quick way to prepare foods healthfully. I particularly like her fettucini primavera, where she boils the noodles in the bottom of the steamer while steaming the vegetables on top! I'm looking forward to trying the garlic chicken with cucumber and grapes as well. Not only are there many tempting recipes to try [also put together as suggested menus with timing], the book also teaches one how to use the technique more creatively than I thought was possible.

Ok I have to ask the author what world she lives in.What guy in his right mind would stop having sex because an ex told him he was to small. No American man that is for sure, I hope English men aren't really this stupid. The sex scenes were very choppy and just seemed to be thrown in.The ending was even more stupid where are they going to go after they jump off the boat? Swim to another country? Give me a break. I would have given this book a negative number but didn't have that option.Having been in casinos there is no way this would have worked no matter what.

Tongue in Cheek was much better. This book is very scattered, and the "action" lacks focus and heat. Not terrible, but not up to her standards.

                      4 out of 5 stars Bad Girl.......2002-01-19

I like how a story actually shows a woman enjoying a lot of sex with both men and women. I am not one of these woman, but I certainly enjoy reading about it. I didn't understand her attraction to the main male in this story, but I guess that was what the whole book was about (after the sex). At least she didn't wait around for him to make up his mind!

5 out of 5 stars Sophie is one busy little girl on this cruise.......2001-10-26

Actually the author, Tabitha Flyte strayed from her 'Tounge in Cheek' book here by letting Sophie, our heroine, pretty well stay on a more conventional path in regards to her sexual escapades on the ship. Sophie manages to seduce the Captian, Mick, Tom and Moira, the four people on board that are critical to her plan to rob the casino.

One of the absolutely most erotic scenes was Mick's seduction of the newlywed honeymooning Jane on the bow of the 'Prince Albert' ..... yes absolutely delicious and teasing .....

Don't expect to get deeply involved in a complicated plot but rather a light book that will while away a lazy afternoon reading well wriiteen contemporary erotica.......

4 out of 5 stars sun, sea, sand and...........2001-10-11

I loved Tabitha Flyte's Hottest Place so I really looked forward to this one. It didn't disappoint. The style was different - usually she writes in the 1st person point of view, but seeing things from different points of view made it all the more interesting. I liked seeing things from the male mind as well as the female mind and she seems to know exactly what turns people on, male or female, straight or gay. Nice one.

if not just to look at the development of the corporate identity of various well known companies (and some that haven't changed!) then you surely need this book just for your retro-fixation... i know i did anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and beautiful book of trademark art.......2000-08-16

In this age of computerized clip-art, the works housed in this collection may not be as impressive - or perhaps surprising - as they were at its 1988 publication. Still, the beauty of these trademarks and the cleverness of their design are both a pleasure to view and and a source of inspiration. By pulling these logos out of their sublimated context and displaying them front and center, they turn into works of art.

Baker and Blik have gathered together a wide range of logos, including some very familiar (The Pep Boys, Zig-Zag, Elsie the Cow), and many more hopelessly obscure - but no less fascinating. And by organizing around themes, the reader can get some ideas as to how themeatic elements came and went with the years.

A nice coffee-table or bathroom book that is also at home on a graphic designer's bookshelf.
