Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good field guide and beautiful picture book.......2005-05-31

Perhaps I am going overboard in giving this guide a five star review but even a book with an adequate selection of color photos of marine invertebrates is just so darn beautiful I can't help but cause me to rave and this bok offers a selection that is more than just adequate. There is no way one can include all of the seashore creatures of US into one volume let alone a field guide and Audubon guides are not the best things to use for taxonomy. That being said it is a gorgeous little book and certainly helpful to the average beachcomber. Even if you are a Midwestern landlubber this is a great little volume. If nothing else consider it a mini coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars If Frosted Flakes are grrrrrreat, this is so much better.......2002-04-09

I live in North Carolina and catch and keep a lot of Invertebrates we we go to the beach. So far, every Invert that we've caught has been in this book, easy to find and we found out alot about it by reading. Anyone who sees something cool at the beach often should get this book. In fact, it's a Must-Have.

3 out of 5 stars OK for the Basics.......2001-08-18

I think that all of North Americas sea shore critters can not be described in a single book. Certainly not in a book of this size. The publishers where quite bold in the scope and as such much information has been left out. That said let me tell you what is good about this book. The pictures are GREAT! Much better than looking at technical drawings. However, they are not better for identification. The descriptions of animal groups are excellent. For the person with little biological background this will go a good way toward explaining the complexities of ocean life. The method of identification, sorting by superficial appearance is handy, again for the inexperienced. To sum it up, if you want one book to carry during your first summer of beach combing get this one. If you need a companion for a marine zoology class stay away, unless you already have everything else.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-11-30

Anyone who has used the National Audubon's Field Guides knows just how great they are. This one is no exception. Great picture plates and acccurate descriptions of organisms. For the biologist to the beach hopper, this book is easy to use and very informative.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Nature Watchers.......2000-04-03

I found out about Marine creatures in my Marine Bio. class, and I loved them, so I got this book to further my looking into their world, and it's great. A must have for any person interested in going to the seashore, and just watching what runs around in those tidepools and on the beach.

5 out of 5 stars I am a Marine Biologist and this is the best book for the West Coast - Period!!.......2007-02-23

This is a timeless classic, very readable as the author puts you in a place (rocky intertidal or a mudflat) and then describes the animals you will see. It is written with a wise eye and wry humor. The long lived sea anemone in Scotland that was done in after 80 some years by the "ineptitude of (we suspect) a botanist".
It is more specific to central California, but still useful in Southern Calif and the northern coast as well.

5 out of 5 stars A timeless classic.......2005-11-27

This is an amazing book. It was a landmark in its time, and is still useful today.

5 out of 5 stars A Slightly Defaced Masterpiece.......2004-08-18

This book, as it was written, is a masterpiece of natural history. It is a contribution to humanistic biology that has style and description that is uncrippled by the invidious academic flatulence of the professional "scientist". It makes no pretensions. It was written by a man fascinated by the tidal seashore and the animals found therein. Read it and read it well.
Then read "Beyond the Outer Shores" by Eric Enno Tamm an unconventional biography of Ricketts that does full justice to the man and the myths.
Having gone through these impressive volumes I hope you will join me in despising Stanford University Press for what they did to Ricketts before his death and for allowing David Phillips to desecrate his memory in Edition Five.

5 out of 5 stars Still & always the classic.......2003-07-13

This is probably THE serious book to have if one is going to immerse oneself in the California intertidal. Originally produced by Ed Ricketts (of Steinbeck/Cannery Row/Log From The Sea Of Cortez fame) the book has been upgraded, revised, re-edited by a plethora of "co-authors" since Ricketts' untimely death. It still retains much of Ricketts' then-revolutionary Habitat focus, which will either work for you (it does for me) or annoy the hard-core systematists out there. This ISN'T a light book to lug into the field or a light book to read -if you are just day-tripping The UC Press has a number of smaller & more accessibly illustrated field guides that I would reccomend, But if you are seriously into mmarine Bio and have some time on your hands along the California Coastline, you owe it to yourself to get this book. Even here on the Coast of Maine and twenty years removed from the West I still fid myself referring to it...

5 out of 5 stars The standard field guide for the Pacific Coast of the USA.......1999-05-19

I can't believe that someone else has not reviewed this excellent guide to the intertidal biota of the Pacific Coast. This book has set the standard for reference guides to marine life along the Pacific Coast, as well as other locations. It is much more than a field guide -- though it also serves that role. This book describes the intertidal zonation patterns of the Pacific Coast as well as the ecology and aspects of the natural history of the organisms that live there. The book contains good taxonomic references as well. This is the book that many of the country's marine scientists cut their professional teeth on. If you are interested in marine biology, the diversity of life, or the ecology of nearshore habitats, this book is definitely for you. The main strength of the book is the logical organization by type of habitat and vertical elevation on the intertidal zone. The main challenge of a book like this is to remain up to date, which the publisher has managed by producing revised editions on regular basis. This book is a must for any field or arm chair marine naturalist!

5 out of 5 stars Great Beach Reading for the Younger Set.......2007-05-12

My 1st grader just loves Henry and Mudge books. They are "chapter" books-- and not "baby" books. But, they are easy to read. (Easier than Magic Tree House, for example.) Plus, this series appeals to both boys and girls (but especially boys).

This particular books captures the essence of going on a trip to the beach: the anticipation, the long drive, the waves, the crabs. This book would also make a good read-aloud for a younger child about to go on a trip to the beach.

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Henry & Mudge book........2005-08-17

The winsome, colorful illustrations in the Henry and Mudge books are delightful. I used to read the series when I was in elementary school. This one, for whatever reason, has remained my favorite and is actually the only one I owned personally. Any fellow dog-loving children should enjoy learning to read and explore with Henry and Mudge, as well as other book series like 'Nate the Great,' a detective. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea.......2000-05-14

I picked this book out at our local library for my two year old daughter because she loves dogs and the beach. It turned out to be such a big hit that I am buying it! She of course can't read, but enjoyed the story and pictures very much. She loves Mudges playfullness and had just been to the beach recently so she could relate to Henry and his father playing in the water. The length of the story is just right also for her. It's a wonderful book and we are buying two more from the series besides this one!

Book Description

The world's oceans are one of the last great largely unexplored places on earth. They teem with life some of it familiar and some of it strange to us and "Fish Face" takes us closer to the fish that live here. Showing full-page pictures of close up portraits of their faces, the book takes us from the beautiful to the ugly, from spiky to rotund. The huge variety of species is appealing and astounding. The book takes a look at the work of David Doubilet, widely acclaimed as the world's leading underwater photographer. He has photographed fish for over 25 years and "Fish Face" looks at the most colourful, fun and bizarre fish he has encountered. This book should appeal to anyone who has ever wondered about the variety of fish living in our oceans and to naturalists and photographers alike.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great pictures!.......2007-06-10

This book has wonderful pictures but I think it could have been presented in a better way. The pages are small so the pictures are too small in some cases. Some pictures you can't see well because they are spread over two facing pages & get lost in the center. But I love the expressions of many of the fish, you can almost sense their personality. And I love seeing the incredible variety of fish.

5 out of 5 stars A great gift........2007-01-20

Lot's of interesting and colorful photos. I gave it to my sister, for christmas, and our whole family sat around looking at the fish for hours.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a pretty face..........2007-01-13

Once again, David Doubilet shows his ingenious photography work. I really enjoyed Water Light Time, and Fish Face is proving to be a close second. Each image is carefully shot. It is wonderful to see close-up images of deep sea marine life and other creatures that one would not normally find on a casual snorkel excursion. There is a sense of humor to some of these photos, too, which makes looking at them even more entertaining. This is a perfect companion to Water Light Time!

5 out of 5 stars best book ever, picture or otherwise.......2007-01-10

we bought this book first at the monterey aquarium and have recently purchased it on amazon again for our montessori library. parents and children alike love looking at the pictures and marvelling at the wonders of the coral seas and barrier reef. buy this book. it's great!

5 out of 5 stars fish face.......2004-02-06

Doubilet has done it again. As a vintage underwater photographer of 50 years I have devoured all of his books, as an inspiration. Undoubtedly he is the best underwater photographer in the world today and his use of light and subject matter are masterly. Fish Face is an interesting and difficult theme handled with great aplomb.I recommend this work to photographers and all those interested in the sea.

But somehow, my vacations never seem to go according to plan. Instead of a beautiful seaside resort, I found myself in a fleabag hotel that was falling down around my ears! Oh, would I ever be able to relax and enjoy my vacation??

I bought this book for Cgristmas for my boyfriend who used to be an avid surfer. The photography is gorgeous. This book was passed around all Christmas morning.

5 out of 5 stars More than just eye candy..........2006-07-06

My son, who's been surfing for 20+ years, was glued to this book when I showed him my library copy. He actually went through it cover to cover at one sitting. It explains the physics of waves in a way that non-surfing types can understand and shows the shapes of waves peculiar to certain sites that he instantly recognized -> lots of things for us to talk about. So, now I have my own copy and am getting one for him. The photographs are exquisite and give me ideas for the stained glass I make. I think it's a great book to give a surfer or surfer parent and it's great to put the beauty of waves on the coffee table, too.

When I visited the Burgess museum in Cape Cod this year, this book became one of my souvenirs. I had remembered reading it as a child, and the story and information inside held my attention as an adult. It is a charming story involving some of Burgess' favorite animal characters who travel to the seashore and learn about the creatures there. Burgess conveys a huge amount of facts about the seashore in a gentle and entertaining way. Kids will love it.

Celebrated zoologist Martin Wells recorded his thoughts while on a Mediterranean sea voyage, and Civilization and the Limpet is the result. Written in charming, pithy prose, this collection of essays is eminently quotable, charmingly detailed, and wholly enlightening--worthy of shelf space next to Rachel Carson and Lewis Thomas. Wells chooses as his subjects many of the underdogs of the natural world--the species that humans find forgettable, incomprehensible, or even ugly. In essays about everything from sea urchins ("a sort of marine hedgehog") to limpets ("likely to suffer severe identity crises, brought about by its sex lives") to great white sharks ("probably bloody hungry"), Wells observes and reports on his favorite creatures with sympathy, admiration, and joy. His favorites are the cephalopods, which he calls "the jet set." Besides the essays on underappreciated animals, Wells tackles some big questions like the usefulness of science, entropy, and evolution. This is a wonderful collection that will make you want to slip on a pair of rubber boots and head out to the nearest tide pool. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

In the spirit of Lewis Thomas's Lives of a Cell or the many works of Stephen Jay Gould, zoologist Martin Wells takes us on a journey to explore the wonders of marine life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating view of (mostly) overlooked sea creatures.......2007-07-31

Inspired by a sea voyage from England to the Mediterranean, Cambridge professor and zoologist Wells describes the many strange and wonderful strategies for survival to be found in the sea. A recurrent theme is the biological "cost" of various evolutionary designs from warm blood to jet propulsion.

These 25 essays, aimed at the "curious nonscientist" focus closely on creatures like starfish and sea urchins which function quite adequately without a brain or the limpet which finds its way home despite the myriad attempts of scientists to defeat it. Wells explores the practical logic of hermaphroditism in limpets, barnacles, tapeworms, sea slugs and the like, costs and advantages of warm blood zones in tuna, the functions of buoyancy and luminescence, and much more.

He also suggests simple experiments, such as poking a sea urchin with a pencil or catching an octopus (or maybe just feeding it a crab) to observe behaviors and devotes a chapter to creatures (largely jellyfish) equipped with nasty defenses. He shows how the lack of anti-fouling likely prolonged the Punic Wars and observes that "the advent of wooden shipping and the tendency for ships to cluster together in ports must have heralded something of a golden age for marine termites."

While each essay stands alone, references to previous chapters connect the essays in a "developing sequence." Wells' writing is chatty, humorous and clear, with contagious enthusiasm. He imparts a lot of fascinating information about ingenious creatures most of us have never bothered to think about. You'll never look at a tidepool quite the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars first rate, very engaging book on marine biology.......2003-02-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a delightful tour of a variety of topics in marine biology. The author, Martin Wells, wrote with enthusiasm, humor, and authority on a wide range of subjects. Even better, not only do individual chapter essays focus on a particular animal or group of animals, as Wells often uses them to illustrate larger points in marine biology or biology in general (or often issues in conservation).

I can't list all the topics that Wells dives into in this short review, but I would like to mention a few of the ones I found the most interesting. In the chapter titled "Hot Fish," he shows that simply considering mammals and birds as warm-blooded and other animals as cold-blooded is a gross oversimplification. Not only do not all mammals and birds maintain a constant high body temperature, but there are essentially warm-blooded fish! Several speices of tuna and sharks, the two groups having developed there "warm-bloodedness" quite independently, are both able to maintain muscular temperatures well above that of the seas in which they swim. Wells discusses not only how this is possible, but what effec this has on the life of the fish and the ecology of the ocean.

In "Diverse Divers," he discusses the physiological adaptations needed to dive, as well as some of the afflictions suffered from go deep beneath the surface. Discussing not only the problems faced by humans when diving (including a somewhat uncomfortable but informative discussion of the bends), Wells analyses how other animals deal with the challenges of diving, particularly seals and whales.

"Buoyancy" is another fascinating chapter, where Wells discusses how animals are able to float. Seemingly a simple subject at first, it is a problem for marine life, tackled by a variety of solutions. Wells analyses everything from the pressurized swim bladders of fish to the huge oily livers of basking sharks to marine mammal blubber to alterations in the ionic content of body fluids (such as in some types of squid) to the cuttlebones in cuttlefish to how the _Nautlius_ does it...I never knew there we so many ways to achieve buoyancy!

"Dolphins" is devoted to many people's favorite marine mammals, and was quite informative. One issue the authors explores is the well known large brains of cetaceans, particularly dolphins. Does that mean that they are most intelligent creatures in the sea, or does it mean maybe something else? Wells offers a theory as to why dolphins have such large brains, and it has to do with their echolocation. Fascinating.

Other chapters focus on the _Nautilus_, octopi, those marine organisms that attach to boats (such as barnacles), bioluminescence, the lugworm, and hermaphroditism in marine life, among other topics. A wonderful book, I highly recommend as it has something for everybody who likes the sea and marine life, from the most specatacular dolphins and whales to the lowest marine worms to the hated barnacle to dangerous sharks.

5 out of 5 stars all-around excellence.......2002-10-24

I am widely-read in the 'general science with zoological bent' book world. I know much more about all sorts of beasties than any non-zoologist or non-vet really should. And now I know even more than that, thanks to Martin Wells and his excellent book.
Wells writes with tangible passion and a great sense of humour and the bizarre. This is a lovely, engrossing read which I finished in just one day, despite trying to "leave some for later". And although the light and accessible writing style allows for even the complete beastie novice to become immersed (no aquatic animal pun intended), the amount of new and interesting information contained here is very impressive. I repeatedly interrupted my friend's activities to read him yet another descriptive/amusing/insightful/completely unexpected fact about this or that sea beastie.
A fabulous book which I would recommend to (I came close to writing "foist upon" there, because I've been telling all and sundry about this book) anybody who had even the slightest interest in biology.

5 out of 5 stars A child's sense of wonder in an adult's words.......2001-09-07

Naturalists who pick up the pen have to work hard to make their objects of study-which obviously they find of great interest-compelling for the rest of us. This problem is made more difficult by the secret language that scientists speak, which is not as indecipherable as computer programmer geekspeak, but close. The naturalists that succeed at this provide a real service to the rest of us, their books refuges in which to indulge in a brief respite. In their hands we are immersed in a wonder-filled worlds that exists entirely (and amazingly) without special effects. Along the way, we even learn something. Martin Wells, a marine zoologist, succeeds at this task in Civilization and the Limpet, a book that not only marine zoologists would enjoy during a vacation at the seashore.
Wells begins this collection of quirky essays by objecting to the anthropomorphic bias of the media. All the articles about people! The animals seem neither available for, nor worthy of, comment. Wells hopes his little book will convince people that perhaps they (animals) do have something to say to us (people), though they more often than not seem aloof and wary of us (and rightly so.)
Wells studies some of the least respected creatures in the sea. The collection's first essay defends the "world's most unloved animal," the sea urchin. This spiky tide pool creature is known mostly for sticking in swimmers' feet. Only the Chileans and Japanese (and Wells) eat them with any relish. Wells informs us that sea urchins, and their relatives the starfish, exist without a brain, co-ordinating their activities, including the movement of hundreds of tiny tube feet to get around, with a neurological form of democracy. And while Wells doesn't convince me that sea urchins make scrumptious snacks (I've tasted them), he does make them more knowable, thus putting a little of the wonder back.
Wells book is a perfect resource for the recovering wonderer.. In one of the best essays in the collection, "Things that go flash in the night", Wells discusses bioluminescence, the certainly wonderful process whereby animals and plants make themselves glow. He writes: "Sailing at night in seas that luminesce is something splendid that is not given to all men. On a quiet night, with just enough wind to ghost along without the engine, it can be euphoric. Euphoria is worth seeking; we don't often achieve it in this rush-around world. You need a pause, or you miss it."
Don't miss Wells' book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, informative read........1999-12-30

I consider myself fairly widely-read, but after reading Mr Wells' account of why fish are built like they are and how close to the brink of life/death they live, it really gave me pause to think about how (most of) we humans live our lives in absolute, cushioned-from-nature safety. Never having to worry about where the next meal is coming from, nor in a constant state of alert, waiting for sudden death to come scooping us up - whether in the shape of a barracuda or a trawl, it makes little difference to Fred Mackerel. I had never sat down and thought about the energy balance at such a low level before - the energy trade-off between a long chase for a few calories, or sit around on tick-over, waiting for dinner to pass by. We always seem to think of ENERGY on a larger scale (coal, oil, electricity) which somehow divorces us from the fishes' problem - this book made me take a step back and consider Nature and Her ways in a different light - marvellous! (both Nature and the book).

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Chris Van Dusen!.......2007-09-05

We checked out one Chris Van Dusen book (A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee) at our local library and wanted more. We love his "retro" illustrations and his clever rhymes. Our kids ask to read this book over and over again. It is a cute story, told and illustrated well.

5 out of 5 stars MaGee and Dee, forever with me.......2007-03-13

This is a beautiful book with Seussian rhyming text, and appeals to children of all ages, and young boys in particular. The rhyming text helps children who have difficulty reading stay engaged. There is so much to look at in the illustrations, and grownups interested in the color palette and trappings of the 1950s will find all of Van Dusens books welcome additions to their children's book library. This one will never go in the giveaway pile - you'll want to keep it forever.

5 out of 5 stars LOTS OF FUN.......2006-03-08

This book is so much fun. The rhymes make it fun to read over and over, and the illustrations are absolutely incredible corner to corner. The story is so cute. Not too long, not too short. We love it and also purchased Camping Spree W/ Mr. Magee and that too is a must have! Chris Van Dusen did not disappoint!

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for Mr. Magee!.......2006-02-14

We bought this book for our (...) son for Christmas. Mr. Magee's first adventure (A Camping Spree With Mr. Magee) has been a favorite of ours for 2 years and his newest adventure quickly became another favorite! The rhymes are so catchy and the story so simple yet we can't seem to get enough of it, and we can't wait to see what sort of crazy situations Mr. Magee and his little dog Dee will get themselves into next.

5 out of 5 stars Completely entertaining... destined to be a classic!.......2004-09-14

Both of Chris Van Dusen's Mr Magee books are incredible, engrossing, beautifully illustrated (and wacky) tales. No kid I know can put them down. My nephew asked to have it read 10 times a day the first week he got it!

The story is about a retro guy and his dog that go out boating for the day and end up stuck in a tree. They are rescued by whales. While full of drama and adventure both stories end in a relaxing shared meal ;)

5 out of 5 stars It puts my son to sleep.......2006-01-17

I love this book for many reasons, but the main reason is that the cadence of the story puts my son to sleep. We have been using this book as the third of three bedtime stories for about 1 1/2 years now and it still works.

5 out of 5 stars like magic.......2005-11-17

Charlotte Zolotow is such a talented writer! This has to be one of the best books about the ocean I have ever seen. It is a true out of body experience. I'm sitting a few hundred yards away from the Chespeake Bay and, reading this book, it was like I was lifted out of my chair and transported straight down to the beach. And the concept of being able to explain something so truly and completely that someone who has never experienced it in real life can still catch a glimmer of the feeling is an intriguing one. I can see this book being used in classrooms to introduce descriptive writing and urban children being asked to describe the sights and sounds of the city in such a way that a child from the country can imagine it. Teachers and homeschooling families could find a penpal for each child in a different part of the country to exchange these letters with. Even for an adult, this would be an amazing experience -- to find someone and try to share a little bit of your world with her, and to imagine hers in turn.

And the illustrations match the text perfectly. This book is a real gem.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely, Lyrical Book!.......2004-05-27

I bought this book for my children shortly after we spent the summer in a beach house on Hatteras Island, NC. This book completely captures the essence of a day there . . . or on any seashore for that matter. It immediately became one of my children's favorite books as the prose is so evocative and the illustrations so lovely. Seven years later, it is still one of their all-time favorites. Mine, too! Over the years, I have given many copies of "The Seashore Book" as gifts and have received nothing but rave reviews from parents and children. I've just ordered another copy from Amazon to give as a new baby gift. You see, this book is truly timeless.

4 out of 5 stars Great text for visualization.......2003-05-24

As a teacher, I feel this book lends itself beautifully to visualization and text to self connections. My students loved the illustrations and were eager to identify the author's use of sounds, colors, similes, and metaphors. This book provided background knowledge that we used to create our own sensory paragraphs about the seashore. ... I think it is one of Charlotte Zolotow's best!

5 out of 5 stars A book with imagination.......2001-02-16

I liked The Seashore Book because the mother and her son used their imagination almost always. The boy had never seen the ocean so he imagined the sea. His mother tells the boy about the sea. Charlotte Zolotow creates very good mind pictures. It almost feels like you're there.
