    Book Description

This practical guide facilitates a thorough dissection of the dog to learn basic mammalian structure and specific canine features. Emphasizing anatomical knowledge, each chapter presents self-contained guidance on the dissection of a specific body part, allowing the reader to perform these dissections in any sequence preferred. Descriptions are based on the dissection of embalmed, arterially injected adult dogs of mixed breeds, and the anatomical terms used in the book come from the Nomina Anatmica Veterinaria.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for a starting guide.......2007-09-15

Really great start to dog dissection but if you want a more in-depth analysis that is also less travel friendly, go for the larger version of this book.

5 out of 5 stars I live with this book...........2007-09-10

As a first year veterinary student, this book has become a lifeline at school. Whether it's looking up some unknown body part in Radiology lab, or needing a drawing to further comprehend the lecture, this book delivers. A great feature is it's small size - you can carry it in your bag. I keep a few larger anatomy books at home, but this is such a help. It doesn't have the depth and detail you'll need for everything, but gives a nice, quick summary.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for veterinary students........2006-01-27

I am a current veterinary student and this book is a necessary reference for small animal anatomy courses. It is very informative and covers all of the anatomy of the dog. Most diagrams are from the more expensive Millers Anatomy of the Dog.

    3 out of 5 stars From a vet student.......2005-07-20

Pros: It is easy to read, not incredibly boring, when it provides good information, it does so in an easy to understand way.

Cons: Contradictory information, the steps are not well organized, sometimes you cut through muscle you later find out you should have saved.

4 out of 5 stars Nice companion for Miller's Anatomy of the Dog.......2004-03-04

Overall, I found this to be an excellent book for small animal (technically dog only) gross anatomy. I say small animal, but I find myself referring to this text even when studying large animal anatomy. Reason--I like how the text very clearly indicates proximal and distal muscle attachments for all major muscles and specific nervous and arterial supply to all major muscles.

The pictures and diagrams are decent, but all in black and white. I found it helpful to color in structures in the book as I dissected that specific part of the animal.

I didn't find the text as boring as other reviewers have. True, the subject matter is tedious, but this book gets right to the point. Paradoxally, that is also while I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. A lot of the detail is missing. I suggest having a copy of Miller's Anatomy of the Dog to go with this dissection guide.

    Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, and covers most current knowledge.........2000-05-09

A short, biceps-friendly "textbook" on reproduction that covers most of the current knowledge in the field. Very well organized, and beautifully set up. Look at those colorful pictures and diagrams. I enjoy reading this book very much. But, when we were preparing for our endocrinology exam, we found something in table 3.4, p.39, on luteinizing hormone structure - it says that the beta-subunit of LH has two carobohydrate chains (instead of one?). Hopefully it's just a small typo. Well, nobody's perfect. I still give it nine out of ten.

    4 out of 5 stars Course Book.......2000-04-01

I am currently using this book for a college course. The book is perfect for people first learning about mammal reproduction. The book is clearly organized into subjects. I recommend this book for people who want a foundation in reproduction.

      Book Description

This book describes the biological basis of reproduction in poultry and places this information in the context of poultry production. The author has collated and integrated recent information from a variety of sources on the reproductive biology of poultry, including photoperiodism, egg production, fertilization and embryonic development. This is achieved through a well-illustrated and tabulated text which emphasizes integration rather than comprehensive literature citations. The book is aimed at advanced undergraduates or graduate students studying animal reproduction or agriculture, as well as scientists working in the poultry industry.

        Book Description

This book addresses the biological effects of the reasonably large number of classes of compounds that have been recognized as endocrine disrupters. These compounds have been found to persist as pollutants in the environment, and have been blamed for causing developmental disorders and/or fertility problems in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and possibly humans. This book presents the relevant fundamentals of the endocrine systems of animals and humans, the toxicology, developmental toxicology, ecology, and risk assessment methods, and lays out the current state of understanding for the whole field, organized by the classes of compounds that have been identified as endocrine disrupters.

          Book Description

Reproductive issues from sex and contraception to abortion and cloning have been controversial for centuries, and scientists who attempted to turn the study of reproduction into a discipline faced an uphill struggle. Adele Clarke's engrossing story of the search for reproductive knowledge across the twentieth century is colorful and fraught with conflict.
Modern scientific study of reproduction, human and animal, began in the United States in an overlapping triad of fields: biology, medicine, and agriculture. Clarke traces the complicated paths through which physiological approaches to reproduction led to endocrinological approaches, creating along the way new technoscientific products from contraceptives to hormone therapies to new modes of assisted conception--for both humans and animals. She focuses on the changing relations and often uneasy collaborations among scientists and the key social worlds most interested in their work--major philanthropists and a wide array of feminist and medical birth control and eugenics advocates--and recounts vividly how the reproductive sciences slowly acquired standing.
By the 1960s, reproduction was disciplined, and the young and contested scientific enterprise proved remarkably successful at attracting private funding and support. But the controversies continue as women--the targeted consumers--create their own reproductive agendas around the world. Elucidating the deep cultural tensions that have permeated reproductive topics historically and in the present, Disciplining Reproduction gets to the heart of the twentieth century's drive to rationalize reproduction, human and nonhuman, in order to control life itself.

This volume, and its companion volume on the oocyte, provide a wide-ranging analysis of the gametes and their reproductive role in humans. The authors give a detailed account of the spermatozoon that includes particularly helpful information on male infertility and its treatment. The book starts with an evolutionary perspective before focusing on the molecular and cellular biology of the sperm cell and its structure and function. It describes the development and maturation of sperm and their movement and transport in the male and female genital tract. It also covers practical issues such as sperm storage and assisted contraception. This volume will be an essential source of information for all clinicians and scientists with an interest in human reproduction.

Don P. Wolf and Mary Zelinski-Wooten provide a comprehensive review of the procedures and techniques used in assisted reproduction, as well as in nuclear transfer for both the treatment of human infertility and the propagation of animals. Combining the details of clinical application with the physiological facts of reproduction, the authors treat subjects such as the in vitro maturation of oocytes, embryo culture, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and the process of nuclear transfer. Cutting-edge and wide-ranging, Assisted Fertilization and Nuclear Transfer in Mammals offers clinical ARTs practitioners, research scientists, those responsible for animal care, and students not only an informative historical perspective on the development of ARTs, but also updates on several of the more dynamic clinical areas, and a highly practical understanding of their applications.
