Book Description
Budapest is no longer just the tatty gem of old, the Danube pearl hiding behind Vienna, cherished by a few curious, discerning travelers. Now an EU capital, it features five-star hotels, modernized spa centers, cuisine haute and street, and classy cafés. These aspects and much more are detailed in Time Out Budapest. This guide explains Hungarian cuisine, features more than 100 restaurant reviews, and gives authoritative advice on finding the best local fare — and avoiding the worst. The city’s nonstop nightlife, from designer bars to seedy dives to open-air parties, is profiled, along with its relaxing bath culture. A new culture chapter, photographs, sidebars, and chapter introductions, along with rechecked listing details and updated maps, make this the essential companion for a trip to this increasingly popular destination.
Customer Reviews:
Has its ups and downs...........2006-02-16
I brought the latest edition of TOBudapest, two weeks after it hit Amazon.uk, to Hungary with me this past October. That being said, I was a little let down. Granted, Budapest is a city that is still changing, establishing and re-establishing itself. However, I think Time Out missed the mark on several occasions here (and I'm a huge proponent of Time Out guides).
The maps are especially erroneous. However, Time Out is once again very handy when it comes to addresses. I'd suggest buying a map upon arrival in Budapest (a good one can be picked up at a newsstand for a couple of bucks) and working in tandem with Time Out's signature style of breaking attractions up by area.
You take your chances with the nightlife, which surprises me as this is usually one of Time Out's fortes. For instance, they mentioned that, when asked, a bartender at Katapult Kazevo described their hours as "2 AM crazy, 4 AM cool, 6 AM breakfast, 8 AM 'Hello, I love you.'" However, my travel partner and I got there around 11 to find them closing up (the bartender informed us, incidentally, that they were more of a cafe than a bar). This wasn't an isolated incident, which led us to wonder if someone forgot to change the bar/club names to correspond with the correct reviews. Perhaps we can blame the fall of communism for that one.
They include a decent section on the Baths (Budapest's main attraction) and mention most of the other pertinent sights (Opera House, Oktagon Square, House of Terror, the cathedral, etc.). However, this is much more a consumer's guide to Budapest, based on the Big 3 of Wining, Dining, and Buying. While we were unable to try many of the upscale restaurants and indulge in shopping while there, the nightlife portion often steered us away from this guidebook and towards others to plan day itineraries. We did follow one of the day trips further afield with great success. And, as always, I appreciate the frankness of the editors when it comes to safety precautions, cultural and historical backgrounds (a necessity to understand in Eastern Europe, but overall I expected more from a publisher that (up until now) has never let me down.
A mix of useful recommendations and smug commentary.......2003-12-31
Bought this for a recent 5 day visit to Budapest.
On the positive side, it is very useful for finding restaurants and bars. The reviews are generally accurate. The layout of the book is fine, using the index became the primary way of locating information.
On the negative side, the book was very poor on providing what I would call 'travel' information; History of the city, places to see and do, getting around etc. I found many of the descriptions to be very condescending and patronizing and did not inspire us to visit anywhere. I gave up and bought the Lonely Planet Guide to Budapest which was much more useful.
We ended up using the two books which led to a great 5 days in Budapest!
grandes viagens.......2000-05-01
Budapeste é um lugar fascinante. As dicas deste livro são especiais para viajantes que gostam de conhecer lugares maravilhosos e com gastos razoáveis. Vale a pena comprar.
The Definitive Guide to this City!!.......1998-11-25
I lived in Budapest for five months and can honestly say that this book has no equal. It educates and entertains all at once. Time Out does a great job of researching the coolest hangouts, and describes their atmosphere so you know what to expect. Whether you want restaurants, museums, galleries, or flea markets, this is the book for you!

Customer Reviews:
An Attractive Book that Begins to Add a Little Historical Detail to the Classic Approach to the Columbus Story .......2006-10-30
This is an interesting book with nice artwork that unfortunately is a bit dry. I've included the first three paragraphs for your perusal so you can get the gist of the book's style.
Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy.
His parents wee Susanna and Domenico Colombo. Do-
menico was a master weaver. Susanna was the daughter
of a weaver.
Genoa is at the shore of the Ligurian Sea, part of the
Mediterranean. When Christopher and others looked out
over the water, they saw no end to it.
Christopher was a tall boy with a thin face and freckles.
He worked in his father's shop, but he dreamed of going to sea.
While the downside of the book is it's stark prose and a lack of smooth transitions in places, on the plus side it has nice artwork and covers many details that other little kid books don't. For example, it talks about how important Christopher's brother, Bartholomew, was when it came for inquiring after funds for the expedition. He was the one who spoke to the Kings and Queens of England and France - not Christopher. In addition, the author discusses how Christopher was once shipwrecked, and how he ran a shop with Bartholomew that provided books and maps for navigators.
In a general sense, this book builds a picture of Christopher Columbus as a man who didn't give up when faced with delays and difficulties. After reading and discussing the book, children should be left with the impression that Christopher's trip wasn't a sudden and whimsical affair and that he acquired years of sailing experience and struggled through many setbacks before being able to begin his great adventure. I, personally, like the emphasis on Columbus' struggle as it demonstrates that persistence works.
In addition, this book introduces the fact that the native inhabitants of the new world were not well treated by the Europeans. It doesn't go into detail, but it at least mentions the fact, along with the notion that the Indians retaliated in turn. In our home, we talked about this part with our six year old, but not our four year old. [Lets face it, those that would have us talk about genocide and what-not must not have young children in their lives as their suggestions are ludicrously inappropriate.]
Three Stars. [C+]. Attractive book with pastel artwork. Not a great Read-aloud as it is a little dry, but you if can drop some of the verbiage and adapt the text a little bit, it makes a good educational text for the advanced preschooler on up to about eight-year old. The author touches on many points that children can relate to. And it is one of the few books for children that I have run across that even mentions that the men Columbus left behind were mean to the Indians, and that the Indians, in return, murdered them.
A great mythology - but one that denies the truth of Columbus' conquest.......2005-06-30
The story presented here is not surprising, as it recounts the traditional, accepted tale of Columbus' journey. It focuses on Columbus as a person, his desires, struggles, and eventual "success."
Unfortunately, this kind of a focus is very limiting. The bias embedded in the book treats the indigenous people as mute, subservient, nameless creatures who are happy to invite the invaders onto their land. Adler even relegates them to the status of mere goods saying something along the lines of, "On his journey back to spain, Columbus brought back with him pineapples, spices, and a few Indians." Those Indians, if you look at Columbus' own words, were slaves:
"Thursday, October 11, 1492
It appears to me, that the people are ingenious, and would be good servants and I am of opinion that they would very readily become Christians, as they appear to have no religion. They very quickly learn such words as are spoken to them. If it please our Lord, I intend at my return to carry home six of them to your Highnesses, that they may learn our language."
"October 14, 1492
...these people are very unskilled in arms. Your Highnesses will see this for yourselves when I bring you the seven that I have taken. After they learn our languages I shall return them, unless Your Highnesses order that the entire population be taken to Castille, or held captive here. With 50 men you could subject everyone and make them do what you wished"
Adler's story also fails to mention that Columbus himself was responsible for a tribute system that resulted in the death and mutilation of thousands of Taino. It might be nice to think that it was a result of the "bad deeds" of his men, but Columbus' logs, and the writings of his contemporary, Bartoleme De Las Casas tell a different story.
For anyone interested in sharing with students more than one simple and incomplete version of this history, I would recommend Rethinking Columbus, edited by Bill Bigelow and Bob Peterson.
A good beginning but Adler leaves out important details........1998-12-01
With great illustrations, Adler gives us the bare facts of Columbus' life, however, he leaves out the passion of the man that children can really appreciate. Furthermore, Adler "forgets" that 1 reason Columbus sailed was to find new lands but another reason was to win converts to Christ. This & other historical information is lacking in his book. I was left with more questions than answers based on this book & will be looking elsewhere for these important answers. I wish the end of the book had a "parents note" with a synopsis of Columbus' life in more detail.

James Abbe, a 1920s fashion photographer, and Zoran, the designer whose simple, monochromatic clothes were extremely popular in the 1970s, anchor the 500 entries in this massive encyclopedia of fashion. Each designer, photographer, model, or icon gets a page with a large photo and informative but short caption. This has the wonderful effect of weighting each entry equally, thereby devoting the same amount of space to Charles Revson, creator of the Revlon cosmetics empire and relative makeup newcomer François Nars, pioneering clothing designer Mariano Fortuny and contemporary favorite Tom Ford.
Clearly, a good set of eyes edited this book. It's a tall order to choose just one image to define the many facets of a designer, model, or photographer. The choices made here are excellent and often surprising. The indomitable Coco Chanel demonstrates the ease of movement her designs afforded women by briskly swinging her arm out to one side, while Kate Moss is shown at the height of her waifdom, likely the mode in which she will best be remembered. Model Linda Evangelista is pictured with curly locks of hair. It's obvious, too, that the editors employed the haphazard juxtaposition created by the alphabetical organization. Facing entries, no matter how seemingly incongruous, are united by a visual theme, to spectacular effect. The ovals made by the either screaming or yawning mouths of Kurt Cobain and his infant daughter are mirrored in a 1937 Jean Cocteau illustration of an Elsa Schiaparelli design. A model in a 1930s outfit by John-Frederics faces a portrait of post-punk design queen Betsey Johnson, whose floral outfit echoes the flowery silhouette behind the model. A troika of Robert Lee Morris bracelets matches the arcs of a bombed-out London building in a 1941 Beaton photo of a Digby Morton design. The vibrant prints of Emilio Pucci and Lilly Pulitzer fall together naturally.
The reams of fabulous images and the inventive design alone make The Fashion Book a treat at any cost, but the low price-to-size ratio (like its cousins The Art Book and The Photography Book) makes it a real steal.

The Fashion Book is a first-class encyclopedia on fashion as a whole. The cross-references going with each entry make this book an even more entertaining and fascinating source of information as it reveals the entity fashion from different perspectives.
Complete and beautiful guide!.......2007-05-24
This book is a must have as a reference book. It has all the important names in fashion industry and a great editorial design that makes it hard to put it down. Although the size is a little bit tiring ("mini edition"...mmm, kind of says it all!), the pictures couldn't been better.

This is a flawless example of beautiful, mesmeric art. Not only does this book capture the ongoing development of fashion through the years, it presents the designers, photographers, makeup artists, and even fashion retailers who made these pieces come to life. Phaidon has always impressed me with the quality of their books, along with the meticulousness they put into choosing the perfect photos for their final product.
A mini lexicon perfect for any fashionista!.......2006-01-10
This is a great referance book for anyone who loves fashion. It's an A-Z book of designers, illustrators, icons, photographers etc. Just about everyone is in here. This is a great book, because it's very inexpensive, small and great because you can look up just about anyone you would like. There are great pictures, and great informative blurbs, including birth and death dates and information about just what made the person so influential. If you love fashion/ fashion history, go out and get this book!
Mini Edition may not be the best choice.......2005-08-31
This book was suggested reference material for a college course of study at FIDM. Initially I thought this was a paperback condensed version of the hardback book. Upon receipt I found it extremely difficult to read without a magnifying glass - the print is literally micro-small. At first I blamed my aging eyes, but my nineteen year-old daughter whom I purchased the book for has 20/20 vision, and she expressed a similar opinion. I would not recommend this version of the book - if you have the option, purchase the full size hard bound copy.
