If you need to prepare a surf trip, you want to go at the best (known) spot, or you're just curious to see how it looks like 10 000 miles away, go for it !

This book is really well made, nice text, all the details you need to know, beautiful pictures. You can feel it was made by surfers for surfers.

The first pages will give a bit about wave creating system, weather forecasting and wind satelite map reading.

Really Nice book. But don't fool yourself, the best secret spots won't be in there !

    3 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2004-07-28

Cheers to the author for coming up with the first world wide surf guide book. The book includes helpful info on forecasting, how waves are created, and of course worldwide wave hotspots. It will be interesting to see a second edition of it since there are mistakes in the book. For example, for some areas the charts for best time of year to surf are off, to mention one Puerto Rico's. Also breaks are referred to by the wrong name sometimes and even the by month temperatures seem off (i.e Californias). I was eager to buy the book but once I saw the mistakes I decided to wait for maybe a corrected second edition. I recommend to the author that he researches the "hot spots" a bit more carefully. Also just for the sake of adventure a section discussing the potential of discovery around the world would be interesting to see, say the potential around the South Pacific, or Africa for new waves to be discovered. The book may work as a good beginners guide to where the waves are, but for a specific surf trip a more descriptive and more accurate guide would be invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars best guide to world spots.......2003-07-26

although its not as in depth as europe or NA stormrider guiders, The world stormrider guide part 1 gives you some valueble information including color maps, when to go . It even tells you the science of surfing, how swells and tides work. If you are curious about the spots that are around the world, i recommend you buy this book.

                            Book Description

I'm the urban spaceman, baby, I could fly,
                            I'm a supersonic guy
I'm the urban spaceman, baby, I'm making out,
                            I'm all about

I wake up every morning with a smile upon my face
My natural exuberance spills out all over the place
I'm the urban spaceman, I'm intelligent and clean,
                            Know what I mean?

These words (from Neil Innes's hit lyric for the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band in 1968) could be describing the designer Marc Newson. Born in Sydney in 1964, and now with offices in Paris and London, Newson has flown supersonically (in a Mig 29 fighter aircraft) and has built a sky-high reputation for cool and original design, whether in furniture, interiors or products. His 021C concept car for Ford wowed the Tokyo Motor Show, Madonna shimmied around his Lockheed Lounge couch in her video Rain, and his restaurant in New York's famous Lever building opened in spring 2002.

In moving from Sydney to London, via Paris and Tokyo, Marc Newson has brought with him the vivid excitement of Australian popular and beach culture, and refined and developed it through a passionate interest in materials and technology. The result is a body of work shot through with intelligence and wit, urbanity and color which has been delighting the design world for a decade, and is set to charm the rest of the world in the future. For Newson has made the magic transition from a craft designer working in the important but small world of specialist furniture and lighting such as Flos and Alessi, to working for major international industrial clients, such as Ford and Nike.

And so unlike Innes's urban spaceman ('here comes the twist-- I don't exist') Marc Newson is here to stay.

                            Book Description

In an effort to find the origin of all designed things, this exhibition and publication conduct an international survey of the history of design from William Morris's wallpaper to Rem Koolhaas's Prada store. Through examples of 30 completed research projects, The Origin of Things illuminates the process by which designers transform their often groundbreaking ideas into functional, manufacturable products. Drawings, cardboard models stuck together with tape and ultramodern computer animations are more significant here than the finished products, for they illuminate the designer's process in a way that the finished product--unless it is a deconstructive design object!--does not. In addition to the evolution of the paperclip and Gerrit Rietveld's Zigzag Chair, The Origin of Things also reveals the steps that led up to the best kettle ever, to a strikingly snotty vase and to visionary cars, vacuum cleaners and a fold-up scooter. Texts include an introduction that considers different visions of the prototype and interviews with Koolhaas, Jasper Morrison, Marc Newson, James Dyson, Wim Gilles, Wim Crouwel and others. Sketches, models and prototypes come via the drawing boards and studios of such luminaries as R. Buckminster Fuller, Aart Roelandt, Michele De Lucchi, Marcel Wanders, Dick van Hoff, Konstantin Grcic, Gerard Kiljan, Poul Henningsen, Tapio Wirkkala and Ettore Sottsass, with historical examples taken from the oeuvres of P.J.H. Cuypers, H.P. Berlage and Frank Lloyd Wright.

4 out of 5 stars A companion to the study of design and design philosophy.......2007-06-11

This book does not assert itself as a literal translation of history. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate shifts in thinking at the point in time when the proposition was entirely new and profound. Imagine being confronted with the humble paperclip - it is far too obvious to be important but indeed at one time it was very important and by the same logic it gives rise to the competing paperclips.

There are many me-too books showing the same drafts, models and concepts year after year. This is a book about being unique and essential - a point of origin. There is no attempt made here to offer a plagarism source for design school students - it is a mindspring for deeply philosophical elements in the design process and one which is strongly associated with numerous essays in social shaping and the nett-gains of being independently constructive.

It attempts to strike at the heart of great moments in design. It is a notepad / journal / concise-dictionary. If you want to take things further on any given topic there is ample material in any research library to do so. If you expect a literal step-by-step explanation of how everything has become meaningful through design then this book will not write that essay for you.

                            3 out of 5 stars a mixed blessing.......2004-01-18

Can a book be deeply flawed and still be worth having? The Origin of Things delights and disappoints with every page. The book consists of a collection of design objects across the years, along with the sketches and related items used to achieve their final design, and the images are fascinating. The lowly paperclip gets the same treatment as the Frank Lloyd Wright vase, giving it the warhol treatment and reveal its beauty. The text, however, fails. It's often hasty and incomplete, or obtuse, or dry. The result is a tease that makes you hunger for more, or mystifies leaving you alone to look at the drawings and results. Often one sense a thrilling story behind the design process-- such as with Wim Gilles scooterette project, in which he fought to do a personal project to build a lightweight folding scooter/moped that got to final prototype then was killed preproduction-- but the story doesn't shine through. Not bad, but unsatisfying.

However, I've really enjoyed the book, no matter how disappointed I've been with an incomplete story, because it *is* so neat to look at beautiful, well crafted objects and their creation artifacts: the prototype kettle made of two pans soldered together, the x-rays that informed a silverware set, the raw and elegant drawings that became Lloyd Wright's vases.

                            Decide for yourself.

                            Book Description

Marc Newson is one of the most exciting and influential designers of his generation. At 35, he has worked for clients all over the world from studios in Sydney, Tokyo, Paris, London, New York, and Los Angeles. His work includes designs for major companies such as Alessi, B&BItalia, Capellini, Flos, Iittala and Magis. He designed the Canteen Bar in New York, and is re-designing the Standard Hot bar in Los Angeles. His work is in the permanent collections at San Francisco Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh and at MOMA in New York. He has designed a concept car for the Ford motor company, the 021C, which was launched at the Tokyo Motor Show in fall 1999, and was shown at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2000. The book features Newson's dynamic body of work, combining personal archive of sketches and plans and traces the development of Newson's distinctive visual language, inspired by such idiosyncratic influences as the architecture of Richard Neutra, Aston Martin sports cars and the films of Stanley Kubrick. The book is packaged in its own Newson-designed blow-molded plastic slipcase. 10 x 12", includes approximately 200 full-color images

Very comprehensive book on Newson's work. A must have and a collectible.

5 out of 5 stars First catalogue of Newson's work.......2001-03-23

As Australia's most influential designer, Marc Newson has come along way from humble beginnings in Sydney. Shy and unassuming, Marc is a creative force at work. As a design addict of Marc's industrial design, the book serves as an almost complete catalogue of his works up to its publication. It opens up a new avenue to track down manufacturers and collect objects and furniture, so in that respect it is a useful reference.

The book, like Marc's work, is slick and enticing. The slip-case is gorgeous, designed by Marc, and the glossy pages beautifully put together.

If, like me, you are a die-hard Newson fan, you will have this book already ... but for all those people who are new to Marc's work and contemplating purchasing this book (having read all the other amazon.com reviews about how it lacks substance) like Wallpaper* magazine it's a beautifully bound publication that just, frankly, looks fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars will do, until better comes along.......2000-05-23

You've heard all the superlatives, and mostly, they're true: the bar-, glass-, plane-, car-, bike-, chair-, watch-, pod-designing Newson *is* all that and two bags of chips. You'd have to go back to greats like Raymond Loewy or Norman Bel Geddes to find someone who has so unerringly worked out a design vocabulary in so many different realms, and he's done it all by his late 30's. The problem is that he's still waiting for someone to come along and attempt to challenge that vocabulary in print - prise it apart and see what makes it tick.

This book, very unfortunately, is not that. What it is, is an extremely pretty and overpackaged walkthrough of his major work, and as such it's a joy to leaf through - good to have simply for putting all these projects together in one place. The real upside of this is that it enables the casual fan to see for the first time the seamless and almost-obsessive way Newson uses form: the same shape, here a chair, there a doorstop.

We'll be wrestling with Marc's work for the next forty years, so there's still time, but I had expected more from this book.

5 out of 5 stars thank you marc.......2000-04-25

It's about time a designer has captured my attention like some of the great designers of the past. I think Marc is one of the few true futurist. By far one of the best modern day designers of our time. He is one of those designers that has made his ideas available to a wide range of people by producing for companies such as Alessi to B&B. This book is a great collection of his work, it's on my coffee table by itself, it deserves to be. People stock up, Marc Newson is a name you will hear more and more.

If you only casually follow his career you've seen all this work before. There are no real insights into his process, just a bunch of glossy computer renderings done in Form-Z with no depth. Go to a library and look for back issues of DOMUS magazine. They've done much more in depth articles on Newson's work. This book is a marketing brochure.

                            Book Description

Marc Newson is one of the most accomplished and influential designers of his generation, having applied his funkily futuristic but technically rigorous approach to everything from a lounge chair to an airplane cabin, from a perfume bottle to a bicycle, from a concept car to a restaurant. In Pop On/Pop Off, his multiplicity of work is presented in a pop-up book of selected projects, packaged neatly in a box, and stuffed with a bonus T-shirt and buttons. Born in Sydney, Australia, Newson grew up in the beachfront hotel (furnished with cool Italian designs) that his mother managed. He spent his teens traveling in Europe and Asia, before returning to the Sydney College of Arts to study jewelry and sculpture. (He notes that it was a huge advantage to grow up in a country without an indigenous design tradition.) The first piece of furniture he exhibited was the Lockheed Lounge--a chaise longue crossed, as it were, with a blob of mercury--and it landed him recognition around the world. When the Japanese entrepreneur Teruo Kurosaki offered to put his designs into production, Newson moved to Tokyo, where he lived and worked from 1987 to 1991. Newson then set up a studio in Paris in 1991, and won commissions from prestigious European manufacturers including Flos for lighting, and Cappellini and Moroso for furniture. He formed a joint venture, the Ikepod Watch Company, to manufacture the watches he designed, and produced limited editions of aluminum furniture including the Event Horizon Table and Orgone Chair. During the mid-1990s, Newson also designed a series of restaurants--Coast in London, Manchester's Mash & Air, and Osman in Cologne--the interior of a Tokyo recording studio, and a retail system for Belgian designer Walter Von Beirendonck. In 1997, Newson moved to London and promptly won two dream commissions: designing the cabin and livery of a Falcon 900B long-range jet and a concept car for Ford. The car, named the 021C for its Pantone Orange color (though it also appear in lime green), is truly novel: doors that open from the center, swiveling seats, a pop-out trunk, a dashboard that could have been designed by Apple, and one giant rear light that runs blob-like across the car's back end. Other industrial jobs followed: glassware for Littala, kitchen and bathroom accessories for Alessi, furniture and household objects for Magis and B&B Italia, and bicycles for Denmark's Biomega company. Current projects include the Lever House restaurant in New York, aircraft interiors and seats for Qantas, new luggage, cookware and bathroom ranges for companies like Ideal Standard and Tefal, and a mobile telephone for Japan's KDDI. Newson has also been commissioned to design uniforms for the Australian Olympic Team, to be worn at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. As well as winning numerous awards, Newson has exhibited extensively. A major retrospective of his work was held at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney from August 2001 to February 2002 and Kelvin40, his concept jet, was exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris in 2004 (where Bucky, a sculptural installation, was mounted in 1995). Newson's designs are part of most major permanent museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, London's Design Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Vitra Design Museum. Newson is Adjunct Professor in Design at Sydney College of the Arts.

4 out of 5 stars The Newson show.......2007-01-04

I didn't know what to expect from this book. I wanted to get some details on Marc Newson's work and this book was a help. It made me appreciate his work and personality even more through interesting graphics, notes, and extras that came with the book. Some people are born designers and Marc Newson proves he is one of them through this book. Some of the pictures could have been bigger but the way they were shot went along with the style injected into the publishing.

contrived and novelty- for true fans only. cute but no info, more like a kids book. who cares about the "extra" stuff when it feels a bit fluffy anyway.

2 out of 5 stars Nice package, little book.......2004-10-07

If you are looking for a quick visual reminder of the handful of Marc Newson designs in this book (plus a t-shirt and buttons -- wow!), then perhaps this is for you. The title should have given it away, but it didn't ... it's an 18-page pop-up book.

I was hoping for a few pages about each project, the thought processes behind the design and materials choices, more cool pictures of the plane and the plane-like chaise, but none of those are in here. There's a one-paragraph word-bite about each project, and then a picture (or pictures (1 project)) that moves, or pops up in 3-D. Very limited, and rather disappointing. Yes, they look cool -- I just wanted more.

It also comes with '1 SHEET OF BLOTTER-ART'. If it were actual blotter, then I'm sure the book would be that much more interesting.

So, to reiterate: if you love his work, and more is better, then this may be for you. If you want to learn, however, your money is better spent elsewhere.
