Customer Reviews:
Not comprehensive but still helpful........2006-03-28
Overall, I thought this Fodor's Miami guide was helpful for my trip. It highlights many of the important/interesting sights, restaurants and things to do. However, I was disappointed in their lack of coverage of the public transport (more specifically, bus) system on Miami Beach. When I was there, I took the buses a lot and it would have been helpful if a map of the bus routes were added in the book instead of just saying that Miami public transport isn't good, go rent a car. (I didn't have a driver's license) Also, most of the restaurant recommendations are very generic in the sense that I could have easily pulled out the information from websites such as Citysearch. It totally misses out on the smaller, unique and delicious eateries around town (even on Miami Beach). However, the book is still helpful in my overall trip planning though it could have been better.
This book MADE our trip to Miami!.......2004-11-09
This is such a helpful book! We used it for everything from looking for places for brunch, to the nightlife of South Beach, to finding out why there is 15% gratuity added to every restaurant tab in this area! Any question we had about Miami and the customs there was answered! I highly recommend this book - it was like a portable concierge that we took with us everywhere we went!!! : )

Book Description
"I was on my claim,
I told myself over and over...
Nothing bad could happen to me here."
With a mind of her own and a handsome suitor who loves her for it, seventeen-year-old Jane Peck is the darling of the Washington Territory. She's outwitted wild animals, vengeful ghosts, and a disloyal fiancé, but when her finishing school nemesis Sally Biddle invades Shoalwater Bay, Jane discovers that the most dangerous thing on the frontier may be an impeccably dressed debutante. As the Biddles of Philadelphia charm their way into Jane's close-knit community, she finds everything she holds dear threatened -- including her true love, a rakish sailor named Jehu. Will Jane's claim on happiness slip away?
This third book of the richly historical Boston Jane trilogy carries on the tradition of rip-roaring romance and adventure that began with Boston Jane: An Adventure and Boston Jane: Wilderness Days. Jane has survived the wilderness and claimed herself a home, but her frontier trials are far from over. It will take all of the spunk and spit Jane can muster to protect her land and preserve her dreams.
Customer Reviews:
A pleasing installment........2004-08-09
"Boston Jane: The Claim" is the third "Boston Jane" book in this series, and while it's not as adventurous as the other two, "Boston Jane: An Adventure" and "Boston Jane: Wilderness Days," it gives off a familiarity, with new problems. Even though Jane can handle grizzly bears and men, she shows weakness to her female peer that is definitely realistic. I was disappointed in her friends for befriending Sally so quickly, and discarding Jane hastily, but the ending is satisfactory. Hopefully, we won't have to wait two-years for a fourth installment, like we had to before. I good read - I recommend.
Pretty good..........2004-06-12
Okay, the third book wasn't as exciting as the second or the first. But I thought the first was the best of the Boston Jane trilogy. The first was more original, spunky, funny, entertaining, fresh, and totally unpredictable. The others are kind of like add-ons; they didn't have much of a polt to the story. But I enjoyed reading the book and all the rest as well. All in all, the book was thrilling, romantic, and fun to read over and over again and had a sweet ending.
dissapointed:(.......2004-04-27
This book wasn't even half as good as the first two! In fact it was quite annoying! Im sally shows up again? And williams back? I thought it was a bit sad that holm had too bring back old villians instead of makeing up someone new and interesting. And Janes "friends" are quite a dissapointment as wel. None of them stick up for her and jehu is a horrible rotter in this book! He barely comes in except to disbelieve her and be annoying. And there is barely any romance! All and all it wasnt the worst book i've ever read but it certainly wasnt the greatest.
Jane is as spunky as ever in the third Boston Jane Book.......2004-04-14
Ok, this book was awsome once agian holm does it with Jane Peck, 17, with her spunk and wit and charm, as she fights for her belief's, Jane has outwitted a cutthroat ex- fiancee' William Baldt, she's handled bears, murderers and a very long ocean Voyage not to mention proved herself a survivor not only to the pioneers of the washinton territory but to herself, when three of her loved ones dies in short succession. but just as Jane begins to settle into her life. a old ghost has reappeared, Jane's bitter rival who's ALMOST as stubborn as Jane, Sally Biddle appears to ruin Jane's life, especially with the rakish sailor Jehu, the man Jane loves to death. not only this but Will's back threating Jane's Claim stake, as women are not allowed to own land, as Sally with her charm and charisma begins to push Jane out of her circle of trust, on a subplot, a well loved white man the territory dies suddenly leaving his daughter and chinook wife to fend for themselves as racial tensions begin to mount, as the white settlers try to take the "Half Breed Girl" from her Indian Mother. so readers will cheer Jane on as her spine gets some starch as she has the courage to put Sally back where she belongs and defend her beloved indian freinds from an all out race war agianst them... the only thing disappointing was that it needs another sequel or a proluge I give it five stars
Good; not great........2004-04-08
I really liked the first two Boston Jane book and was really looking forward to this one but it didn't live up to my expectations. It was pretty good; I didn't put it down until I was done reading it. But the plot was pretty predictable. Jane was pretty annoying - she really let Sally get to her even though
1) Sally wasn't very convincingly nasty and
2) If Jane can take care of criminals and bears, it seems pretty foolish for her not to be able to take care of a girl.
I'm not saying the book wasn't good - it was. But I was expecting much better.

Book Description
"Nearly seventy-five years of my lifetime have come and gone since hearing of the sparse historical events from the old-timers," American Indian elder George Aguilar tells us. "It's my turn now." When the River Ran Wild! is Aguilar's recounting of events he heard about while watching his grandmother make moccasins by the light of a coal-oil lamp and while strapped to the back of his aunt's horse on the way to the huckleberry grounds. He learned them at Coyote's Fishing Place, where his uncles built scaffolds and taught him how to use traditional technologies to catch salmon as they made their seasonal runs up the river.
In this remarkable personal memoir and tribal history, we learn about Aguilar's people, the Kiksht-speaking Eastern Chinookans, who lived and worked for centuries connected to the rhythms and resources of the great fishing grounds of the Columbia River at Five Mile Rapids.
When the River Ran Wild! is the story of a culture and a community that has undergone tremendous change since 1805, when the River People encountered Meriwether Lewis and William Clark as they traveled down the Columbia River on their way to the Pacific Ocean. To find the stories of that change, Aguilar draws on the journals and diaries of early White missionaries and settlers, such as Gabriel Franchere, Rev. Henry Perkins of Wascopum Mission, and A. B. Meacham. He found other stories in anthropological papers and historical studies that recorded the voices of people who practiced and remembered ceremonies and traditions that were lost or changed during the difficult years of removal to the Warm Springs Reservation in north-central Oregon. He heard yet others from tribal elders who have kept the history and stories of the River People in their memories.
When the River Ran Wild! is the history of names and naming, of deep family connections, and of traditional customs. It is a descriptive catalogue of the plants the River People used for sustenance and medical purposes, and it is a detailed guide on how to pack out an elk and how to tan a hide. Aguilar retells the stories and myths of the river, the stories that "are now infrequent and told from books in the English language," the stories whose "body language, animal mimicry, and facial expressions are gone."
Aguilar has written this book to help us know what the River People have lost on the Columbia River over the decades, but he also gives testimony to what has been conserved and enlivened by a people who love the land and who honor tradition and those who came before. He takes us, perhaps better than anyone else can, back to a time when the river ran wild.

A Must Have Children's Book.......2006-08-24
This is one of the best children's books my family has, and we have many. The take home message is to be the best you can be, to not get upset at not being as good at something as someone else, and that you become the best you can be by nourishing others.

Imagine being seasick for five months, two weeks, and six days as you--a girl from Philadelphia--sail farther and farther away from everything and everyone you've ever known to the unknown wilds of the Great Pacific Northwest in 1854: "I felt certain that luck had nothing to do with anything aboard the Lady Luck, a poorly named vessel if ever there was one. I had just spent the morning of my sixteenth birthday puking into a bucket, and I had little hope that the day would improve." Meet Boston Jane, a new reluctant young lady heroine from Jennifer L. Holm, author of the Newbery Honor Book, Our Only May Amelia.
Impulsive Jane, ever on the path to leaving behind her rough-and-tumble tomboy childhood to become a proper young lady, agrees to meet her very genteel fiancé on the rugged west coast of America. Unfortunately, William is not there when she arrives. Suddenly, Boston Jane, as her new Chinook neighbors call her, must cast aside her "faultless young lady" demeanor and depend on her long-suppressed pioneer spirit to survive. Holm cleverly weaves in lessons from Jane's Philadelphia finishing school, Miss Hepplewhite's Young Ladies Academy, in dramatic and often-hilarious contrast to the trials and tribulations Jane faces at sea and in Oregon country. Readers will be charmed by teenage Jane's ironic tone and inner conflicts and will cheer her on as she sheds layer after layer of decorum. Granted, the budding romance between Jane and sailor Jehu, "hidden" beneath the surface love story of Jane and the more uppity William, is an at-least-twice-told tale; but young readers will get caught up in the excitement of it nonetheless. The intricate details of mid-19th century life on an untamed frontier--complete with carefully researched Chinook tribal history and real-life incidents of white settlers--are absolutely fascinating. A thrilling, entertaining read. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Jane Peck has ventured to the unknown wilds of the Northwest to wed her childhood idol, William Baldt. But her impeccable training at Miss Hepplewhite's Young Ladies Academy in Philadelphia is hardly preparation for the colorful characters and crude life that await her in Washington Territory.
Thrown upon her wits in the wild, Jane must determine for herself whether she is truly proper Miss Jane Peck of Philadelphia, faultless young lady and fiancée, or Boston Jane, as the Chinook dub her, fearless and loyal woman of the frontier.
An exciting new novel from Jennifer L. Holm, author of the Newbery Honor Book Our Only May Amelia.

Boston Jane By: Jennifer Holm.......2007-04-11
Boston Jane is a book about a girl back in the 1800s. She is 15 and is going to get married to William who lives on the frontier. Jane is going by boat but when she gets there she finds out there are only Indians there and not William.
Jane has to stay with the crew of the ship on the frontier. She finds out what life is like for them. Jane has to pitch in and do her share of the work. At first this is hard for Jane because she never did any real work before.
Boston Jane isn't a book I would recommend. It was pretty boring until the end. All Jane does is worry about being a proper lady. This doesn't make her life very exciting. This isn't a book you should read.
Boston Jane: Start to a Great Series! XMMO.......2006-12-28
This book is very funny. Though it has some romance, it's only a very small bit. She doesn't even kiss the guy! You see, she grew up in philadelphia, with the most annoying and proper person ever: Sally Biddle. Sally pestered her into going to a young lady's academy, and learning to be a proper lady. It was only after her education that she was called to go to the wilderness frontier to marry Dr. William Balt. It's hilarious when she tries to be the young lady that she was trained to be in a muddy, dirty, fleas infested cabin! This book is Adventurous and funny. It's a great read!
I LOVED it!!!!.......2006-08-31
Ignore the age range it has for this book, that is completely RIDICULOUS. There are things in this book that might scare children of that age... but definitely not anyone over ten. Also ALL AGES would LOVE this book, don't be put off by the age range "4-8" THAT IS SO INSANE!!! "4-8" belongs with Barney or My Little Pony.
That aside, I LOVE THIS BOOK. It is one of my very favorite books and I can't believe anyone could ever not enjoy it. Okay, there are some funky things going on with ghost-lady. But it is very easy to forget these things and get caught up in the book. The writing is AWSOME, I really think Jennifer L. Holm is a fantastic writer. And if you are over ten, I highly recommend this book!
An Awesome Adventure!.......2006-06-30
This has to be my #1 favorite book. I could hardly put this book down. This funny first person story is of the adventures' of sixteen-year-old Jane Peck. From venturing to the unknown wilds of the Pacific Northwest to marry her childhood idol, to puking in a bucket the whole way there. From sharing a filthy cabin with the most flea-bitten, tobaco-spitin group of men, to making salmonberry pies. From falling in love with a sailor, to surving the smallpox. You'll enjoy this book full of adventure, romance, adventure, funny moments, and again adventure!
What an "education" is not useful for.......2006-03-26
I always seem to enjoy books for teens and pre-teens that include something about the things society deems important for people to learn and this is highlighted amusingly by Jane's going to school to learn to be a lady. Readers will delight in the tomboy Jane's prowess at spitting and throwing manure, while at the same time realizing that she does, in fact, need civilizing. Unfortunately, the education she receives isn't exactly one that fits her to live on the frontier in wild Oregon, where she is determined to go to pursue a childhood crush. It is the contrast between the "learning to be a lady" and the realities of life on the frontier that provide a good deal of the humor in the book. The added advantage here is that the picture of the primitive conditions is well researched and accurate.
Interesting and fun, though probably not as deep as some treatments of this era.

Spratling Silver
ASIN: 0810932482 |
Book Description
William Spratling revolutionized silver jewelry design in Mexico. Arriving in Taxco in 1929, by 1940 he had over 100 silversmiths producing his enormously popular silver creations. Important figures of the North American literary and art establishment, among them John dos Passos, William Faulkner, and Georgia O'Keeffe, purchased his designs and sang his praises. Out of Spratling's workshop emerged many of Mexico's finest silver designers, including Héctor Aguilar, Antonio Castillo and his brothers Jorge and Justo, Salvador Terán, and Antonio Pineda. Today their striking jewelry and hollowware in silver-often set with precious stones and pre-Columbian artifacts-are prized collectibles.
This book tells the story of the legendary designer and of seven decades of the silversmith's art in Mexico. With its elegant photographs and an invaluable appendix of hallmarks, this volume-which accompanies a traveling exhibition that will draw new attention to Spratling's silver designs-will appeal to collectors, dealers, scholars, and everyone who enjoys beautiful jewelry.
