5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Historical Romance.......2007-07-29

Cynthia Owens has deftly created a cast of characters--hero, heroine and secondary players, that quickly become real as she weaves her tale. Siobhan, pronounced Shivaun as the writer cleverly informs us on the first page, is a heroine worthy of the name. She's strong, loving, compassionate; not a lady born, and not perfect, but a real woman, a true heroine. Rory O'Brien is the hero, a man near suffocating from guilt, afraid to love lest he cause more deaths.

Rory returns from America where he's lived since he was eleven, his fortune made, to the village in Ireland where he was born. He goes by another name, hoping no one recognizes him, his plan to use his money to help the village, atoning for the wrongs done by his father and imagined wrongs done by himself.

Rory's past catches up with him, and Siobhan is there to guide him to the light. In the process, there are nail-biting scenes, pages read quickly to find out what's going to happen. The author has a knack for suspense and until the end, you know something bad is going to happen, but you don't know what. Very well done. I enjoyed this book very much, the suspense, the true to life cast of characters, the love and the happy ending. I think you will, too.

5 out of 5 stars A Strong Irish Romance!.......2007-01-20

David Burke has a past and it's been a rough one. He used to be known in Ireland as Rory O'Brian but when he left he changed his name and began putting his life back together. But it's time to return to his homeland and face his troubled past and hopefully find the peace his soul so desperately needs. What he finds is not what he expects since a famine has left deep scars in Ballycashel. Will Ireland be the balm David needs or will it be too much for him.

Siobhan Desmond needs to find work in order to take care of her family. The famine hit them hard and when she learns a new master has returned to Ballycashel she seeks employment and instantly feels a connection to the newcomer. David seems angry yet she can see deeper into his heart and knows what he needs is a tenuous connection to something or perhaps someone. Perhaps the healing power of love will tie these two together.

Ms. Owen has penned a very romantic story demonstrating the power of love and how it can heal deep wounds not only for our protagonists, but for the village they call home as well. Ms. Owen was not afraid to add history to her writing therefore making this a well rounded read. This is one author I plan on keeping my eye on.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the Heart!.......2006-12-28

In the wee town of Ballycashel, Ireland, 1850, Rory O'Brian, now known as David Burke, has returned to the site of his tortured past. Determination to right many wrongs drives him back to the people and land that once laid witness to the very things that drove him away. For years he has hidden from what happened, but now he seeks a little dram of peace for his soul and a place he can claim for himself and his daughter Kathryn.

But the town is far from over the scars cast upon it while he lived there as a boy. Still reemerging from the terrible waist of the infamous Great Famine, Ballycashel itself is in need of a healing as well. When their old master passes and this new one takes the reins, many are looking upon Burke with a knowing eye. Siobhan Desmond knows not why the brooding man attracts her so, but she feels in her heart he is a good person, despite her experiences with the old master. Like all residents of the town, her heart is still healing and she and Burke begin a tenuous dance as old as time--one of love and all the promise it holds in its grasp, if only they would seize it. Can Burke find a way back to the land that was always waiting to welcome him and let go of painful secrets? Danger is only a stones throw away and he and Siobhan will have to find a way to fight without sacrificing their hearts.

Many heartfelt sighs were wrenched from me as Burke and Siobhan's story unfurled. Author Owens pens in loving detail all that is dear to not only this couple, but the town itself as well. Their coming together is a catalyst that unwinds quickly and aids in relieving not only their minds, but the rest of the townsfolk too. The town, with all its residents, was at times like one character in itself, one that comes together to support Burke when he needs it most. But alas, his true salvation laid in Siobhan and their ability to find love once more. This was a truly enchanting tale of love lost and regained, revenge and a town saved. Bravo, Ms. Owens, for a wonderful read!

4 out of 5 stars I would buy it again.......2007-04-28

We bought this book prior to moving to Boston. We have never been to Boston and did not know a soul here when we moved. It has a good description of the neighborhoods and helped us pick a neighborhood to live in. It also having moving tips, which I wasn't interested in and things to do in Boston an surrounding areas. Also has a section on annual things/celebrations in Boston which is nice to know what to look for. Has a "What's Around Town" section on Museums, Galleries, parks, restaurants and things to do and even branches into the surrounding states. I think it is a well rounded book for someone who doesn't know the area at all. I would buy it again.

4 out of 5 stars helpful, but dated.......2006-08-19

I am finding this book to be very helpful because it really focuses not only on Boston, but also on overall moving tips and timelines. Some people may not need this section at all if they are avid movers. I would have liked to see more detail in the surrounding neighborhoods. The "Outer Suburbs" were really generalized which was not helpful to me as I will be relocating to a western suburb of Boston. The publishing date is also 2002, so it does not include all of the latest antics with the Big Dig, etc. Still, I find it helpful overall.

4 out of 5 stars Prepare for Wicked Haht-bu(hrh)n.......2006-07-25

[Those of you born and raised in Boston, feel free to just skip to the last two paragraphs]

The book advertises itself as "everything you need to know before you move and after you get there!" That's quite ambitious. There can't be too many places more challenging to move to than Boston, the single most passive-aggressive city in the world. Everything about Boston is charming and quaint from a distance and hostile in the here and now. For example, you can use no logic or intuition to find your way around if you get lost. None of the normal rules apply. Streets veer off on such subtle and off angles, intersecting with each other three to five at a time in intersections with no known corresponding geometrical shape with which to describe them. Several streets have the same name, like Beacon, which starts and stops in several places having nothing to do with each other. The best illustration of this is the fact the Tremont intersects with itself. It's true, there is an intersection of Tremont and Tremont, as denoted by a couple demure little street signs that you will see if you already know they're there. You feel like you've slipped off the space-time continuum. You can drive for miles without seeing a street sign, unless a street has a commemorative sign, being named after a local politician you've never heard of. And the endless arrays of completely arbitrary one-way streets (why not just alternate?). Then you have the round-abouts. These traffic circles are actually kind of fun once you get how to do it, but they are not kind on newcomers. Nor are the other drivers, who drive worse than New Yorkers, worse than many urban third-world cities for that matter.

But you've gotta love those beautiful, quaint cobblestone streets. Nothing like rolling your ankle on those pseudo-aged bricks while the MBTA bus driver races off feigning obliviousness. Which takes me to the citizens, those wonderful Mass masses. Once you get to know them, they are just like people anywhere, you can make great friends. But they'll let you sweat about two years trying to break the ice. If you smile and say Hi to a stranger on the street, you'll be greeted with suspicion at best (especially jarring if you come from the mid-west). And don't bother trying to tell someone from Boston that there are other places around the country that are also nice to live.

And the accent. You gotta be kidding me. Dropping the R's is one thing, but when they start putting the R's on the end of words that end in vowels, then you know they are just messing with the rest of us, you have to be doing that on purpose (although it is fun after a while). Even the revolving doors are passive aggressive. They move automatically, but then stop suddenly and freeze, let you sweat a little bit, the voice, "Please!" the voice of an angry, middle-aged, jilted, life-long cigarette smoking, nickel-slot playing woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown, "please! Please step forward. Please do not push the door." And wait to you hear what the landlords are charging these days for a 600 square feet, where you have to move your tandem parked cars the whole day on garbage day despite a two-hour limit on street parking.

Still, despite the near impossible ambitions of this book, making moving to Boston a pleasant experience, it is a handy little book to have. There are tons of books for sight-seeing, weekend getaways, and great restaurants, but I'd wait until you get a feel for your new budget to look at those. What you need when moving there, especially if you haven't spent much time there, is the real skinny on the neighborhoods. Which cities or towns are on their way up, which ones are on the way down. They actually have pie graphs breaking down the neighborhoods by ethnicity, gender, and age (stuff you want to know but don't necessarily want to ask your creepy realtor) median home and condo sales (which need to be extrapolated if you get an edition more than a year old), crime, income, parking, the type of government, and the commute.

It would have been nice however to also have a word or two about the public school systems in each of the neighborhoods, although there many neighborhoods in which it would be difficult to craft a non-offensive honest description. To their credit, they do include the numbers for the Boston Fair Housing Commission and other resources that are useful to have on hand as soon as the landlords start to try and rip you off.

By the way, don't let my portrayal of the harrowing transition fool you, I love this city. Great restaurants, great libraries, nice parks, great museums, a world class orchestra, good sports, and as Gaffin observes in the section on "What's Around Town," with all the colleges, lectures, bookstores, second-run cinemas and art theaters "you won't want for intellectual stimulation in Boston." And the people are great. They take forever to warm up, but once they do they are loyal friends. Plus, there are enough people in Boston who also aren't from Boston to water down the East Coast snobbiness. Yeah, I'll enjoy it more when I can afford it more, but I'm having my fun as it is.

Plus, if the people of Boston care about their sports, they will make every effort to keep me here. I won't go into all the statistics here, but everywhere I've moved, the local sports teams have experienced a significant upsurge in their fortunes. I'm not kidding. And it's no coincidence. I'll give you the numbers if you want them, you can construct your own chi square and see. Highly significant. So make it worth my while people (that also goes for people in other cities who might be interested in recruiting me to see their fortunes turn around).

            3 out of 5 stars Perhaps 3.75 stars?.......2002-12-30

Entertaining a move to Boston, I bought this book on a whim. It's a nice guide and will give you a general overview, but I wanted more meat. I suppose I'd be in a better position to judge had I actually moved at this point. It does give some nice information by neighborhood, so you could theoretically find a dry cleaner/coffee shop/hardware store your first week in town if you needed to. A little too much of the book (for my taste) was devoted to moving basics...like a packing timeline, etc. I already know this stuff or would consult UHaul if I didn't...I would rather have had more Boston info in the book. The writer clearly loves the city and is proud to share it, and isn't afraid to discuss the city's foibles (traffic, parking and high -- really high -- cost of living). If you're looking to move to Boston, I'd buy this in tandem with another book or two -- just to make sure you're getting everything you need.

5 out of 5 stars Gaffin on Boston.......2002-01-15

An excellent book. In the tradition of Mr. Gaffin's reknown website Bostone Online, the book is enlightening for those of us from far off lands on the true culture and language of Boston. A true guide to bean town. Well recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD BOOK TO START AND GUIDE A DISCUSSION.......2006-08-29

I, myself enjoyed this one and have found it useful to read to a class and then using the book as a tool to start discussions. The illustrations are quite good, but for the age they are intended for, the lack a certain amount of action which the kids like. Most of the children enjoyed the book being read to them and then talking about it, but few of the children ever check this one out to take home to read. As I said, the illustratios are great and the text follows the illustrations quite well, there just is not enough action to attract the attention of the young ones. This is a useful too though.

            3 out of 5 stars Not amongst Adler's best.......2004-01-02

Simon Bolivar is a name that we are all familiar with in one way or another (Bolivia anyone?) but that I doubt nine out of ten people could repeat five facts about him. It was with the intent of learning more about this man that I approached this book. My final appraisal is that it is difficult to determine the degree of success to which the subject is accurately portrayed. On opening the book the viewer meets an image of Bolivar on horseback looking like a thinner, more agile, Napolean. Yet of all the battles Bolivar fought, and there were many, there is only a single picture of Bolivar riding into battle. Otherwise the illustrations in this book are a little dull. They show multiple scenes of repose with people sitting and talking or writing. This isn't to say there aren't interesting things within the story. Simon Bolivar was a fascinating man with a rich and full life. Yet it's almost as if the illustrator and author conspired to dull Bolivar down. His politics, his upbringing, and his works are well displayed. His life as a whole, however, seems toneless. I got bored reading this book after walking in with the explicit desire of knowing more about the subject. I don't like to think how a kid assigned this book in class would respond to it. It might read aloud well if backed up with supplementary information and great teacher interest. However, there aren't any endnotes at the back of the text, leaving the reader who wants to know more (and how could you not?) with just a timeline of Bolivar's "important dates". On the whole, a disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars The simplest illustration of a wonderful hero.......1999-06-15

I think this book is excellent in drawing the picture about how much this South American means. More than a hero, and resemblance to George Washington is an inspirational character for children. Javier Florez (Newark, NJ)

5 out of 5 stars Simon Bolivar, the George Washington of South America.......1999-03-12

"The George Washington of South America". Such comparisons are usually not pertinent. This one, and with this book, it is. It is, because Simon Bolivar would have liked it himself. He carried with him, always, until his last moment, the Yorktown medal of George Washington, with his miniature picture and a lock of his hair, given to him by Mrs. Washington via the General / Marquis Lafayette, the French hero of the American War of Independence. So this marvelous book brings Simon Bolivar to the hands and imagination of USA children and some adults! The man that with the help of Britain, personified in the mostly Irish British Legion, liberated six nations of South America. The man that conceived the union of the American Sub-Continents. With exquisite drawings, not always accurate but always kind and nice to look at, this beautiful book is a great homage to diversity in the Americas, and to the fact that success flows in both directions.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for artists!.......2007-06-29

It's not always the most entertaining book to read (who enjoys reading about taxes?), but read through it once. Stick it on your shelf. And then whenever you need it, the book can reference you to certain government documents such as release forms, copyright forms, tax forms, consignment forms, authenticity forms, etc. There's tons of forms in the book for you to work off of when you are writing up your own agreements. Also current on laws for artists. Always keep a current edition of this book handy.

4 out of 5 stars Tad Crawford Does It Again.......2006-10-23

Tad Crawford does his as-usual excellent job clarifying a complex area for the working visual artist. Readers will admire his straightforward writing style and many, many practical examples.

A word of warning, though: as Tad himself says, he is not providing legal advice and, while the artist will thank Tad if he or she follows Tad's advice, it does not substitute for appropriate legal consults as needed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for artists.......2006-07-07

This is an excellent resource to define and explain legal issues in the arts. It is a little dry in some parts but far easier to read than books written for the legal profession. I have been using this book as a textbook for a college class at an art school for graphic design students for several years.

The book covers copyright law and touches on legal business issues that pertain to all visual artists. The focus of the book is on fine artists but it is the best resource I have found for graphic designers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Guide.......2004-11-22

Even if you have the luxury of an attorney that speicalizes in art contracts, as I do, this is a great book of forms to keep handy for quick reference. My advice is to get it with his other book: Business & Legal Forms for Fine Artists also by Tad Crawford

5 out of 5 stars If not this book, what else?.......2002-01-24

As the title of the book stated, "Legal guide for the VISUAL ARTIST", the book covers information that is aimed at VISUAL artists, including photographers, painters, printmakers, designers, sculptors, illustrators, textile designers, cartoonists, and craftspeople. Wow!

Wow, all right. That may be the reason some artists may have found the book full of legalese. In my humble opinion, this is a must-have for anyone that claims oneself to be one of the ones listed above. If not this book, what else?

Starting from the minute one decides to have some "interaction" with other human beings regarding the making (or selling) of one's art, this book is of big help. For instance, an artist may decide to hire a model to paint a picture, this book will guide him/her how to prepare a model release form in order to guarantee the artist benefits of the painting created, without problems such as violation of privacy in the long run. This book is also a critical line of defense for the artists in dealing with copyrights, ownership, insurance, and tax income, etc.

My guess is that if one is simply an artist, one would read through the book (or at least sections of immediate concern, for instance, a painter would not have to worry too much about sections for photographers) and scan through the whole book for information. As far as using the book on a regular basis, I believe by frequently reviewing relevant sections, as well as making use of sample forms provided in the book, any visual artist will find this book an indispensable tool for his/her art making/selling process.

              Strongly recommended.

              Product Description

Like most serious businesspeople, professional artists equate learning the law with hanging from their thumbs above enormous vats of boiling oil. "Art Law Conversations" provides a soothing alternative. This "surprisingly readable guide" engages the reader with 32 conversations about the legal topics artists face in their professional careers. From copyright to contracts, each conversation is packed with information and internet links for further study; yet each is accessible, brief and (some would say) funny. "Art Law Conversations" is fully indexed and offers a detailed glossary. Featuring delightfully whimsical illustrations throughout its easy-to-read format, this book is an ideal resource for artists of all genres and is a must for art school libraries.
