Lonely Planet DC, CITY GUIDE.......2004-05-06
Just so no one else gets confused...this is a city guide of Washington DC, not a 'traditonal' Lonely Planet guide book. That having been said, I do love the small size of the book makes it a lot more handy to carry around. The content however is a little more heavy on the history of the town and little usless tidbits then on the what to do & where to go. Single paragraph discriptions of the various museums & attractions are good for an on the fly type book, but not so much for doing resarch on planning a trip.
Of course there is so much in DC that I can understand the smallish descriptions, all in all, good to keep in the pocket when in town. 3 stars for not identifing it's self as a City Guide other then in the picture.

Customer Reviews:
Lame for LP.......2007-09-18
I took this book with me on a one week trip to DC. I was mightily disappointed. It started with the trip from the airport. I had to pre-plan on the internet, which took awhile, because the book offers no advice for getting from BWI or Dulles into DC.
There is no useful information on how to get around DC, most notably to the Jefferson, Lincoln and FDR Memorials. It wasn't until the end of the trip that I figured out what options there were for public transportation to this end of the mall and the Tidal Basin. A good guidebook should guide you, not make you search all week for the answer.
The authors apparently used a car to get around. Lots of info on parking spaces. So if you're traveling by car (fat chance at hotel parking being $41 a night), this book might be for you.
The restaurant listings dwell excessively on expensive places to eat. Mostly with bad food. I guess if you can afford to park in DC, you can afford to spend $50 on a bad dinner.
Contrary to another reviewer below, the book seemed to be entirely without opinion, at least where it was needed. But this has been a pattern at LP lately. The Air and Space Museum? Feels like walking into a museum that hasn't been changed since 1986. All the guys walking around with sub-machine guns strapped over their shoulders? Makes you feel like you're visiting El Salvador. And the 'bag checks' at the Smithsonians, one after another, each making you hold your bag in a specific way unique to each security guard. Those would be useful opinions.
You can get just as much useful information as contained in this book (actually more) from the DC's visitors websites.
Usual high standard.......2007-08-10
Good book, lots of detail, good maps, good details of accomodation (though this is a bit pointless in the internet age I think), food options... just a standard, good LP. If you like format of LP you'll like this.
An easily portable and thoroughly user friendly compendium of invaluable information.......2007-08-05
An easily portable and thoroughly user friendly compendium of invaluable information on America's capital, "Washington, DC: City Guide" offers more than maps, but provides a complete introduction to the city in terms of its nightlife, arts, history, sights, and memorials. Of special note is the section on the 'National Mall'. Whether the traveler is in Washington for business or pleasure, this outstanding and very highly recommended guide offers descriptive recommendations for walking and biking tours, dining establishments, bars, entertainment, activities, shopping, sleeping, and excursions. Enhanced with the inclusion of a directory, an index, and maps, "Washington, DC: City Guide" is the ideal companion when planning a stay in one of the most dynamic of America's major cities.
Very serviceable guidebook.......2007-06-05
This is a good guide to Washington D.C. and it is very recent to, having been published in April 2007. I went to D.C. in May and was not disappointed. I would have liked more tips aimed at those on a 'shoestring' budget, but there was plenty here to keep me busy for a week. (I especially recommend you check out the cafe in the American Indian museum-- delicious!)
I didn't think there were too many left leaning comments as a previous reviewer said. Some people are too sensitive to that sort of thing. It would definitely be extreme to avoid buying it because of supposed 'left wing commentary' and it's highly unfair to give a low star rating just because ones feelings were hurt by a comment which was perceived as being partisan. Anyway, this book isn't just aimed at Americans, Brits, Canadians, Australians, Irish... The whiff of anti-Bush sentiment that might be noticed in the 'background' chapters is just normal to most people. And why do you need to read the background to 'American politics' if you're American??
This guide also has some nice suggestions on excursions, such as to Baltimore or to some of the Civil War sites of Virginia. The book is compact and well laid-out, so overall very pleasing for that Lonely Planet collection!
decent guide, but biased left .......2007-06-01
This is a decent guide book, but there are others just as good. It contains lots of negative comments about the current president that are unneccessary to it's purpose as a city guide. I wouldn't buy it for that reason alone.

Not really DC.......2003-01-14
I have been living in DC for the past 2 years and bought the LP as a gift for a friend. As a resident, let me tell you ... this guide falls MUCH below expectations. Published in 2001 Feb, it does not take into account any of the new security regulations, road closures, etc. Futhermore, the listings for restaurants, bars and clubs is not only prehistoric, but also very "old-school" ... none of the hip DC places are included. I would supplement this by checking Washington Post's website - they are much better. Cheers,
Good guide as always, but not LP's best for sure..........2002-04-09
I've been fortunate enough to have used Lonely Planet books throughout Europe, Australia and parts of North America and have always found them reliable and accurate. However, the Washington DC edition falls quite short of the LP standard that I have become used to.
First of all, of course the information on attractions and especially security is vastly out of date, but more importantly, there were more than a couple recommendations that I followed in the guide that led me to a closed bar (twice), a bad place to eat (three times), and a REALLY BAD hostel recommendation. What was said in the guide to be the best hostel around turned out to be the worst one I've ever stayed in.
There were far more popular guides with the people I met, the Let's Go being the guide of choice. Having used the LP to some frustration, I would recommend using an alternate source of info for your trip to the Capital.
Great for your first, second and third time. Very thorough.......2001-07-02
This is my second summer living in Washington, DC during an internship and about my fifth time here. I have visited just about every major site that is accessible by public transportation, and some that aren't. I bought this book because it includes a blurb about the history of some of the major sites, sidetrips into Maryland and Virginia and lots of decent restaurants for a student on a budget. Perhaps it includes a bit too much info on traveling to DC (how to get there, visa info, etc. etc.) but it's a guidebook for the outsider primarily.

Perfect for a Couple of Days in Washington, DC.......2003-09-25
Like the other Lonely Planet Condensed books this one is a day pack must have. It's small enough to be able to stick in a pack or a back pocket but is filled to the brim with useful information on what to see in DC, where to eat, how to get there (excellent maps including details on the Metro), and where to lay your head at the end of the day. We picked this up on a whim but found that it helped us narrow down the best sights and points of interest for Washington, DC when we only had a few days to stay. Well worth the very reasonable price and you'll have no trouble finding the highlights and the hidden treasures of the capital.

Too hard to read.......2006-02-13
This is my second water-resistant Lonely Planet map, and I'm very disappointed with it. The color contrast is too pale, and the printing is too small. I won't use it for my trip, opting instead for a free map from AAA which is very good. Don't waste your money on this one.
This was the only map I needed.......2000-07-01
This was the only map I took on my last trip to Washington, and it was all I needed. It was most helpful simply because it showed where all of the major sites are, and it had a separate map which focused on and around the Mall. Unlike most maps this one is durable and waterproof (luckily because it happened to rain one of the days I was there). This map was extremely helpful in every way. All I can possibly tell any prospective buyers is BUY IT! (And it's so inexpensive, too!)

Unique Canadian perspective.......2006-03-29
Reviewed by Sandra MacLean for Reader Views (3/06)
Stolen Horses is a light read that details a serious subject.
Author Dorothy Pedersen speaks from personal experience gained since her own horses were stolen in 1992. She takes the reader on a journey as far back as the 1800's that makes it abundantly clear that this is a modern day crime that has roots deep in the past.
The most astonishing thing about this book is that it describes true events! Horse rustling gangs? My only exposure to the world of horse rustling comes from old TV shows that I assumed were created just for entertainment, a foreign world that was very familiar to the fictitious "Wild West." Imagine my surprise to discover that the real "Wild West" included Canada and upstate New York!
Pedersen tells about the people involved in horse rustling along the Canada-US border in a very easy reading style that draws the reader into the story. She uses historical material to create the feeling that you are reading a series of letters to a relative. Eight separate short stories that span more than a century and two countries give the reader a sense of the magnitude of the industry. "In fact, by 1812, ... stealing from frustrated farmers got to be so profitable in New York that some thieves has no other form of employment."
Through Pedersen's storytelling, we are able to see how the outcome of an investigation into horse theft can be heart breaking whether or not the horse is ever found. One owner describes her situation six years after the theft; "I still involuntarily look for her when I go past a field of horses." Her horse, Khalett, was not recovered. Even after Mekeezun (stolen in 2003) was found and returned home, her owner says "I wish I knew who did it because I've still got a big issue with him ... I still get nightmares."
Successfully tracking stolen horses continues to present challenges for law enforcement personnel and owners. Pedersen's research has made her sufficiently expert in the area of horse and livestock theft that in 1996 she was asked to consult with the Ontario Provincial Police. She continues to write about prevention and detection of horse theft.
"Stolen Horses" gives a fascinating glimpse into a world that is unknown to most people and the author relates the story from a uniquely Canadian perspective.
Horse Rustling -- not a thing of the past.......2004-02-10
I was amazed to find out that horse rustling is not something we see only in the movies but is actually happening now. The bottom line is ... horses are valuable, and people steal them.
Dorothy Pedersen, relates some great horse rustling tales from the past and the present. Including the story of Mekeezum a pregant mare and Fanfreluche, daughter of the famous Northern Dancer.
Ms. Pedersen writes from experience, having had several of her own horses stolen she undertook extensive research on the crime of horse napping. She has consulted with the Ontario Police and provided information leading to the establishment of a livestock database.

The love of animals can touch our lives. Often we learn life's most valuable lessons from our four-legged friends. But sometimes that love is met with ruthless abuse, neglect and mistreatment. In this collection of uplifting stories for all ages, you will meet some remarkable horses who have lived through unthinkable pain and suffering, but because of some special "angels" who weren't afraid to get involved, have triumphed over the pain they endured to be given a "Second Chance".
You will feel their pain and then celebrate their joy as they journey from abuse to the safety of loving hands and hearts. Their stories are nothing less than miracles, and their spirits are inspiring.
Customer Reviews:
Huge disappointment.......2006-04-12
My first thought when I opened the box was, "I paid 20 bucks for THIS?" Reading the book didn't help. More information on the rescuers than I wanted to know. Not enough information about the horses. I was never amazed. Save your money.
Greatest book in the world!.......2004-07-05
This book really touched me. They Cheyenne chapter was my favorite because that horse and the people who cared about her went through a lot. especially to find her all them times. But this book is so interesting and it makes you want to go rescue a horse yourself.
A Very Good Book.......2004-03-17
I read this book and then did a report on it for school. I liked it because it didn't just have all the happy stories you usually read about horses. This book told the truth about abused horses. I learned a lot about how to take good care of my horse, and how to help save a horse when I see that it is not being taken care of, and that it takes a lot of hard work to raise a horse. But most of all I liked reading that most of the horses in the book got happy homes and were taken away from the people who hurt them. This book was easy to read and is good for kids and parents too.
My favorite horse book.......2004-02-22
I have read lots of horse books from my library. I thought this book would be just another book with horse stories in it. But I was wrong. It was so much more than that. I felt like I knew each horse that the author wrote about. They seemed so real and I was so happy when they were rescued and had good lives. No horse should ever have to suffer, but when they are in bad homes, it is so good that people find them and take them away from that. I will make sure all my friends read this book. It was very good. I learned a lot from this book.
A great horse book.......2004-02-09
This is the best horse book I ever read. The way the horses were saved made me feel so happy. I cannot believe that people could be so mean to beautiful horses. Now they will have a great life. I loved this book so much. My Aunt bought it for me and I am very glad. I will let all my friends read it too.
