Book Description
Welcome to Canada--home of the big bucks. Whitetail monarchs freely roam through the hardwood forests and crop fields in the checkered agricultural belt of this vast land. Heredity endows our deer with large bodies and matching massive antlers, but environment dictates behavior. Canadian whitetails are different and behave differently from their southern brethren. No matter where you have hunted before, deer hunting in Canada is a brand new game. Your old, tried-and-true ways will not work here. New tactics and strategies are required.
Veteran hunter, Dragan Vujic, shares close to forty years of hunting experience in this comprehensive book on Canadian Whitetail Hunting. The book itself is divided into three parts--The Facts About Canadian Whitetails (general information, game laws, social structure, habitat, communication, breeding behavior, anatomy, kill zones), Critical Factors That Determine Canadian Whitetail Behavior (weather, phases of the moon, hunting pressure, time of year, scents, doe to buck ratios, time of day, food sources), Effective Canadian Whitetail Hunting Strategies (archers, snipers, stalkers, callers, drivers, blockers). Within these sections, Dragan Vujic covers all of the key components for hunting whitetails in Canada. Additional chapters include tactics for all situations, the recently new phenomenon of hunting deer in the suburbs and tracking wounded whitetails.

Lonely Planet Diving & Snorkeling Turks & Caicos.......2003-05-05
I purchased this book after having vacationed in the Turks and Caicos Islands for 10 days, and dived 16 of the dive sites mentioned in the book...some of them twice. The descriptions are very precise, as I was able to compare the authors comments with my own that I recorded in my dive log. It's not the first and only Lonely Planet Diving and Snorkeling Guide that I own, nor will it be the last.

Book Description
This book marks a major development in our understanding of the religious history of both Europe and North America during the first half of the eighteenth century. It studies the early history of the Protestant revival movements from a pan-European, as well as Anglo-American viewpoint, and shows the interrelationships and movements among the major Protestant communities. It is a contribution to the history not only of religious belief and practice, but also to that of the successes and failures of eighteenth-century statecraft in dealing with problems of religious excitement and division during an age of enlightenment. It is based on a vast range of archival resources and published scholarly work ranging from Eastern Europe to the American colonies.

Ward Provides Essential Context for Methodism.......2001-05-13
This is a masterpiece by one of the great scholars of English Methodism!
W. R. Ward provides us with a comprehensive and sweeping examination of the context into which (and from which) early British Methodism emerged. One of the few Methodist scholars with a true command of the German language, Ward has gone to the roots of Continental Pietism and drawn out the social, religious, and political circumstances that led to the Continental influence upon the religious developments of 18th Century Britain. Ward skillfully avoids both understatement and overstatement when situating the early Methodists within the events and trends of their era. Balance is one of the great strengths of this book, in fact.
This work monumental in scope. It is a must-read for anyone seriously interested in Methodist scholarship. But it is not an easy read. This is not a book you pick up and browse through. It requires a concerted and determined 'plough through.' But, for those who dare to take on the challenge, the rewards far outweigh the pains involved.
Superb!

Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-01-04
What I liked best about the book was the description of the ways the West encountered Buddhism up to the Middle Ages. Throughout the book there are many references to Tibetan Buddhism and to its centers in Europe and in the States: too much emphasis, I may add. But then again, Batchelor was a Buddhist monk in the Tibetan tradition for many years.
Key figures that promoted the West's encounter with Buddhsim:
King Menander. Born in central Afghanistan, once a general of Demetrius, Greek king of Bactria. He never visited Greece. He was part of Hellenic civilization. He eventually converted to Buddhism. See the Pali text Milindapahna, in which the monk Nagasena answers questions of king Milinda.
Merchants, travelers, pilgrims and embassies to the East.
Clement of Alexandria: mentioned Buddhism in his Stromata.
Basilides. A Gnostic heresiarch, he may have learnt principles of Buddhism from the Indian community in Alexandria.
Mani. He attempted to continue the legacy of Buddha, Zoroaster and Jesus; he was killed in jail by Zoroastrians.
Legend of Barlaam and Josaphat (Bodhisattva and Budhasaft, Arabic for Buddha); Joasaph (Gk), Josaphat (Lat). This story reproduces the story of Buddha's renunciation with some variations: Barlaam is a Christian monk who converts Josaphat. There are also several Bible passages found throughout the text.
William of Rubruck. He visited the Mongolian capital in 1254.
Nichiren, who emphasized chapters 15, 16 and 17 of the Lotus sutra.
During the evangelization of Francis Xavier, Zen Roshi Kesshu converted to Christianity.
Ippolito Desideri arrived in Lhasa in 1716. Studied the Kangyur and Tengyur. He mastered oral and written Tibetan. Wrote five books
Fr. Lassalle (died in 1990), wrote Zen: Way to Enlightenement (1966)
Fr. William Johnston, wrote Christian Zen (1979).
The Theosophical Movement.
New Age, which author aptly defines as "a Gnostic Romantic fantasy" with "irrational and eclectic yearnings" (p.271)
Converts to Buddhism include:
Anthon Gueth. A German who took the name of Nyanatiloka (died in 1957) and translated the Anguttara Nikaya
Siegmund Feniger. A German Jew who escaped from Nazis to go to Sri Lanka. Took the name of Nyanaponika Thera (died in 1960)
Osbert Moore. He became Nanamoli Bikkhu. Translated Pali texts into English
Harold Musson. Took the name Nanavira. Wrote Clearing of the Path (1987)
One quote from the book:
"The idea of a God who breaks into history to save human beings from their sins through the death of his only Son makes no sense. From a Buddhist standpoint, such a God is to the cosmos what an independently existent self is to the mind-body complex: a consoling fiction. Just as the vision of the Buddha releases one from the need to believe in such a self, so does it free one from the need for such a God." (p.276)
Little Known Corners of History.......2002-08-08
Batchelor, a convert from Tibetan to Zen Buddhism (assuming he hasn't converted again since), is one of the more interesting Western authors on Buddhism. This work surveys the history of contacts between Buddhist persons and schools as they were both visited by Westerners and came themselves to visit the West. It comes in five sections. Most people seem to like the final two, as they deal with contacts made in modern times, but a lot of this is covered better in Clarke's Oriental Enlightenment. The first three segments, however, are a fascinating overview of some surprising encounters that are not widely known. Did you know there's evidence of a Greek ruler discussing philosophy with a Buddhist monk a couple hundred years before Christ? How about Buddhist traders plying their trade across the Middle East into Egypt before and during the time of the Early Church? Or Catholics and Buddhists squaring off in the court of the Khans in Medieval Central Asia? Who knew? Most of the book, however, is a tradition by tradition account of how Buddhism came largely to Europe. Another book, How The Swans Came To The Lake, compliments it by telling the story in North America. I have two main reservations. First, some modern figures are given short shift because, even though they were popular, they didn't represent the best Buddhist teachings. As a history, however, they should reflect their social importance. Second, given that this is an encounter with the West, and Christianity is the major Western religion, Batchelor could be better informed on the history and theology of that religion. A fair number of his statements in connection to it are not well considered. Either way, this work is, over-all, great arm-chair travel for the reader interested in Buddhist history.
A Diverse Historical Perspective.......2001-01-24
Batchelor does a great job documenting the history of Buddhism, and how it came to the West. More specifically, Western Europe (UK, Germany, Poland) although he does give some attention to the United States, and Eastern Europe (the former USSR). It is a bit too detailed at times on the early history 100-1300AD, and less focused on more recent events. This early history does detail the fascinating ways that Greek and Christian explorers described Eastern religions (idolatry), and tried to convert them to Christianity. He includes the biographies of a diverse set of Buddhism's early advocates (Shantideva, Padmasambhava, Karmapa, Dogen, Nichiren, Tsongkhapa), and the lineages that they founded. He also describes the impact that some notable figures had on Buddhism's westward spread, including Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Marco Polo. As in his other books, Batchelor is very pragmatic, and willing to point out Buddhism's weaknesses, and describe the politics that were intertwined with the advocacy of the Dharma. A very interesting read that contains a lot of information not found in other books and publications.
Lucid, compelling, informative.......2000-10-03
Batchelor hits a home run with this text. The narrative device of contrasting Asian and Western personalities who were key to the interplay between Buddhism and European cultures makes this book easy to get hooked into. It almost reads like an adventure novel in places, and the doctrinal and historical perspectives are well written and balanced. This book starts with the ancient Greeks of Alexander's empire and traces the seemingly willy-nilly encounters through the millennia. Batchelor's best, most inspiring book, it did not get the attention it deserved when it was issued.
An excellent history of Buddhism........1997-02-15
An excellent resource, this book ostensibly comments on Buddhism in the West, by which the author means Europe, but not the Americas. However, it goes beyond this and for each sect covered in modern times, it gives a history of the founding of the particular school or movement and what its beliefs are that differentiate it from other types of Buddhism. Particularly for a beginner, this is good way to sort out who's who in the world of Buddhism

Book Description
Book III in The Story of the World series by M. B. Synge, "The Awakening of Europe" covers the reformation in Germany, the Netherlands, France, and England, as well as the settlement of colonies in America. The rise of England and the Netherlands as sea powers, and the corresponding fall of Spain, as well as the rise of Russia, Austria, and the German states are also presented. Suitable for children ages 11 and up to read to themselves and for children as young as 8 as a read-aloud. The Story of the World series, by M. B. Synge, comprises a set of five volumes, written at a middle school reading level, that cover all major events in the history of Western Civilization, from earliest recorded history to the close of the nineteenth century. With fifty or so short chapters in each volume, the series links the great eras in time and place together by a chain of stories of individuals who played principal parts in the events related. While statesmen and military commanders figure heavily in the narrative, stories of explorers, scientists, artists, authors, and religious figures are also presented. The author writes in an engaging fashion, using dialog frequently to bring scenes to life. She juxtaposes events happening at the same time in different parts of the world in a style reminiscent of the books of Genevieve Foster. This series is an excellent introduction to world history for adult readers as well as for children.

Book Description
Mikhail Gorbachev's policy of perestroika released new forces throughout Soviet society. In Lithuania this process resulted in a psychological-cultural revolution. Deep-rooted feelings, long suppressed, exploded, demonstrations and mass meetings ensued, and the face of the society changed. Although at the beginning of 1988 Lithuania appeared to be one of the relatively conservative republics in the Soviet Union, by the end of the year it stood among the leaders in pushing change. By 1990, Lithuania was even forcing Moscow to respond to its initiatives for independence and economic reform.
Is Lithuania the prototype of a nation emerging from the collectivity of the Soviet Union? Alfred Erich Senn, who was present during most of this piece of history in the making, believes that it may be. He documents the dramatic events and changes in Lithuania during 1988 with the perspective of a historian and the immediacy of a participant.
The reader will easily grasp the whole spectrum of political activity in Lithuania, and the range from right to left among Lithuanian activists. And, because the Lithuanians have emerged among the leaders of change in the Soviet Union, Senn's account provides a key to later developments, in terms of both political movements and political personalities.

REQUEST FOR NEW REPRINT.......2001-03-28
Dear Christian Literature Crusade, This is very good book as well as the author of this book is very valuable. Please make the new reprint of it, so that I could obtain this book. With Kind Regards - Verners - Awakening in Wales by Jessie Penn-Lewis ISBN: 0875089372
A Tremendous Encouragment.......2000-06-29
This is the best book covering the revival in Wales out of the ten or so on the market. It details all the fantastic happenings attributed to this turn of the century move of God from a first hand perspective because the author, Jessie Penn-Lewis, was there and was a personal friend of the main evangelist Evan Roberts. The author recounts first hand stories from the revival that resulted in bringing over 70,000 people to Faith in Jesus Chirst in the first two months. Stories such as: pubs closing because they had no customers, football teams disbanding beacuse of lack of interest in temporal things, and judges that had no cases to try because everyone was in church.
The Awakening in Wales.......2000-06-25
This is the best and most powerful description of the Welsh revival that I have run across. It is written by Jessie Penn-Lewis who attended the revival in person. It describes many stories and first hand experiences of the powerful move of God in Wales starting in 1904 where over 70,000 people embraced Jesus Christ in the first 2 months. The text describes how all aspects of life was altered during the revival--including judges with no cases, football teams with no fans, the closing of all the pubs, and many miraculous events that occured during the church services. It keeps your attention throughout the manuscript and will woo you towards greater intimacy with the glorious man Christ Jesus. I highly recommend the book. Buy a copy for yourself and one to give to a friend.

Book Description
A classic of 20th-century Welsh literature is given a contemporary treatment in this new translation of Y Byw sy'n Cysgu. Set in a tight-knit Welsh-speaking community at a time when separation, adultery, and divorce carried huge social stigmas, this novel is full of insight into human character and changing social mores, reflecting the influences of Chekhov and Maupassant on the author's response to the erosion of youth's certainties.
