Book Description
Updated with the latest information on canine breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, this lavishly illustrated volume is a treasure house of information for dog lovers, owners, breeders, and prospective buyers. It begins with a detailed discussion of breed evolution, focusing on the physical and behavioral traits that distinguish one canine breed from another. The bookÂ's main section profiles more than 150 breeds, arranged in the general categories specified by the AKCÂSporting Group, Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group, and Herding Group. Each profile tells how and why the breed was developed, and how selection to perpetuate specific traits affects a dogÂ's suitability as a pet. Advice for prospective dog owners will help them be sure they are choosing a breed that is compatible with their own situation and needs. They will also find information on each breedÂ's vulnerability to specific health problems, longevity, exercise needs, compatibility with children, and much more. Profuse illustrations include color photos of all listed breeds.

Awesome.......2007-09-10
one of the best dog books out there, and believe me i've read quite a few. i think what i liked best was that each dog breed was given a review on a number of different qualities. 5 stars being the highest. they were judged on energy, "hair care", friendliness towards people and other animals, among many other things. being a dog lover and avid dog guide book reader, i thought i knew just about all there was to the different dog breeds, but this book proved me wrong. i learned more about dogs in this book than i've read in 25 other dog breed books.
A Good General Overview .......2007-08-16
A good reference book for various dog breeds. Obviously, it does not go into great detail about all of the breeds BUT it does provide a good overview of the various breeds in question. If you are buying it to obtain information about a specific breed, then this is NOT the book that you need. A breed specific book would be much better. If, on the other hand, you want a good starting point for the various dog breeds, then this is the book for you. Provides ideal information if you are thinking of buying a dog but don't know what breed to get.
Dogs of the world book.......2007-07-07
This is an excellent book outlining the types of dogs in the world. It presents the types and characteristics of all the common dogs that currently inhabit our planet using good descriptions and photos. An outstanding book for its purpose.
Great Value!.......2007-06-17
I paid $20 for this book and it has been well worth it. The pictures are great and serves as a great reference. It's sure to grab your guests' attention also as the pictures and information are well placed.
Excellent Book!.......2007-06-02
The book is easy to read and has great pictures. It gives a great overview and quickly learn and understand about the breeds. I like the chart it gives about grooming, exciteablity, exercise needs, etc. Very useful and very pleased!

This book is clearly the best zoological compilation that is available at the moment. Grzimek is one of the most renowned zoologists in the world, and his works were edited and supplied with material by today's highest-ranking zoologists. This 9000 page encyclopedia includes the following volumes:
v1 Lower Metazoans and Lesser Deuterostomes
v2 Insects
v3 Protostomes
v4-5 Fishes
v6 Amphibians
v7 Reptiles
v8-11 Birds
v12-16 Mammals
(v17) - Cumulative Index
All this text is generously supplied with coloured illustrations. The only drawback to all this goodness is that this piece is pricey.

Really disgusting fun for kids and adults!.......2007-10-02
Haven't you always wanted to have a truly encyclopedic knowledge of the absolutely revoltingly disgusting facts of life? Well, the most hilarious but well-researched facts are now available to you regarding pimples, poop, farts, burps, hairy ears, maggots, etc., thanks to Joy Masoff's Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty.
I can't honestly vouch for the fact that the book covered absolutely everything as the author claims, but it's really hard to imagine what she might have left out. There's some serious research presented here, along with a lot of laughs! Don't miss out on this book!
Really Cool Book!!!!.......2007-09-25
This book is really cool! I bought it for my 10 year old son for his birthday. I know he will read it cover to cover and relay all the 'gross and disgusting' facts to us while we are eating dinner!!!! A really neat concept for kids! Gets them interested in reading while learning some unknown, gross facts! Recommended...even interesting for adults too!
Education with a Twist.......2007-07-02
What a great book! My 8 year old was spellbound with it and he got an education along with it, and didn't even realize. Even I learned a thing or two, as well. Easy reading and so informative, great for "kids of ALL ages".
Excellent for keeping boys busy.......2007-05-12
This is an ideal book. I bought the book to keep my two nephews occupied during my daughters wedding. This book kept them quietly entertained and amused with whispered "look at this" giggles. It would be a great book for a boy of 8 - 14 yrs old.

i bought this and the oh, yikes book as gifts for a friend of ours who was turning 7. my daughter (11) wouldn't get her nose out of this one long enough for me to give it away!! she loves it and is constantly reading little blurbs to us from it. great book for huge age range.

A wonderful resource.......2007-06-20
I have an older edition of this book, just found this 2001 edition (new) at a book sale at Barnes & Noble for only $20.00! As a Docent at a local wildlife facility, this is an excellent resource book, as well as good reading material. Super illustrations, with easy-to-understand text makes this a "must-have" for anyone interested in the Mammal world.
An excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science.......2006-12-14
Both high school and public library reference holdings strong in animal science will find the second updated edition of the three-volume set The Encyclopedia of Mammals to be an excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science. A team of editors have produced volumes which lend to both serious study and leisure browsing with a blend of color photos and drawings and articles newly revised to reflect the latest research and trends. From maps demonstrating species distribution patterns to articles that survey conservation issues and mammal natural history, the set seeks to clarify scientific terms and perspectives and will prove a delightful resource for any student of natural history.

Fantastic Book - Hard To Find Under $100.......2005-03-21
"The Encyclopedia Of Mammals" is a wonderful book. BN offered a one-volume edition with over 930 pages until sometime in 2003 for under $50. The book covers all the mammals in the world in full color with comprehensive text and weighs about 12 lbs. The current offering is a 3-volume edition by Facts On File Natural Science Library at about $300.

Definitely best price.......2007-04-02
No idea how it was done, but I got it 75% less price with amazon that with any other vendor, perfect condition, my son loved it, he just goes literally everywhere with them.
Complete covers everything.......2007-03-22
These books cover everything from scientific names to places. It is heavey on bigfoots from around the world and overlaps some on them but all in all a good read if your into the science part of cryptozoology. There are stories in the book about sightings but this is not a pure sightings book it is more about cataloging the cryptids.
Phenomenal 2 Volume Set!.......2004-10-17
Finally! A long overdue authoritative encyclopedia of cryptozoology! This set is awesome! There is so much information here that it'll take a veeery long time to digest it all.
I do have several suggestions though:
1) More photos and illustrations (especially photos and stills from film footage which are discussed, but not shown).
2) Dustjackets. The covers are gorgeous, but how long will they remain so without dustjackets? And at this price, you'd think the publisher could afford it. Which brings me to...
3) The price is outrageous. How can the publisher make any money by limiting it's buyers to libraries, rich people and fools like me? $60 sure, even $75, but $185? Jeez! And even though I paid WAY less than that for my set, it still almost killed by bank account.
Even so, I'm glad I bought it and wouldn't be without it.
A Very Intersting Ecylcopedia.......2004-10-16
I accidently stumbled upon this item while looking for anything on the Paranormal. The Book seemed very intersting and I bought it. The Price was a Killer, but it was worth it. It is set in 2 voulumes which is more like an Encyclopedia, but in the Final Sections of Volume Two mainly is Reference to all the New Species discovered in the 20th Century. Also in the real Final pages, are all Lakes that supposedly have Monsters in them like Lake Erie or Lake Champlain. I would recommend this Book for Reference, but not for reading from Start because like I said, it is more like an Encyclopedia than a Non Fiction Novel.
A collection of animals reported to exist at some point.......2004-09-25
This two-volume set is a basic layman's guide to the weird, wonderful world of unknown animals. These are animals whose existence has not been proven at this time. While the idea that there may be animals, including some very large ones, living in the world and we have no proof of their existence might be strange to some people it was during my lifetime that gorillas and rhinoceroses were removed from the category of fables.
For each entry the editors provide information on its physical description, behavior, distribution, possible explanations, significant sightings, and sources. This is a non-judgmental review of the reports from around the world presented in a typical encyclopedic style. Although it contains primarily creatures reported to exist but not proven it also includes some animals like the Dodo bird, which were known to exist and are believed extinct. But, because there have been occasional reported sightings in recent years these animals are included.
ABC-CLIO, Inc. published some of the best educational materials of this type on the market today. As always Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology is a high quality reference work written at a high-school level and so is accessible to everyone. Mysterious Creatures is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in this area and a recommended purchase for libraries.

My daughters favorite picture book.......2007-09-24
This has been my daughters favorite book from the time she was 1 year old all the way through 2 years 3 months. She loves to flip through the pages and identify very detailed pictures of all types of animals. Its also very informative for adults too.
Kids love it.......2007-07-15
About 3 months ago I bought my first copy and lent the book to a First Grade Class. The teacher told me a good number of the kids really liked the book and later on a lot of them thanked me for it. I bought a copy for them to keep in their class. Since them I have bought copies for my great-granddaughter and my granddaughter. Recently I lent it to a Fourth Grader that loved it and asked for it as her upcoming birthday present. Kids do love it (most of them anyway!).
My grandson's favorite present.......2007-06-27
My five year old grandson took this book out from the library and kept renewing it until they told him he had to return it. It is a wonderful book chock full of information about all the animals and I have enjoyed reading it to this budding naturalist. So I ordered if for his birthday. He hugged the book and then hugged me shouting "I love, love, love my Pedia".
National Geographic Encyclopedia of Animals - Wonderful!!.......2007-04-11
This is another beautiful and informative book by National Geographic. My children (ages 5 and 8) love this book and so do their friends. The organization of animals and the interesting facts are presented clearly.
Beautiful Book.......2007-03-27
This is the book my grandchildren pick up everytime they come over. The pictures are beautiful and the information is interesting.
Book Description
An unmatched reference work distinguished by its erudition and beauty, The Simon & Schuster Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures is an illustrated who's who of prehistoric life, a Baedeker of more than 500 million years of evolution on Earth.
With entries for more than 600 species, each arranged in its evolutionary sequence, the book presents a panorama of enormous diversity, from predatory dinosaurs to primitive amphibians, from giant armored fish to woolly mammoths, saber-tooth tigers and dire wolves. Each entry features a specially commissioned full-color painting prepared according to the best research of today in close collaboration with world-renowned paleontologists. The records of the rocks -- fossil bones, teeth, skin, hair and even footprints and nests -- have been combined with knowledge of the anatomy and behavior of present-day descendants to arrive at informed judgments about posture, color and other aspects of appearance.
Lively and informative "biographies" of the creatures accompany these remarkable illustrations: how they moved, what they ate, where they ranged and the habitats and ecological niches they occupied. Comparisons are made wherever possible with familiar living animals, highlighting both the contrasts and similarities. Also included are articles on subjects such as the time scale of evolution, fossil formation and interpretation and convergent evolution.
Truly a magnificent sourcebook, The Simon & Schuster Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures is both a triumph of scholarship and a work of art. It will stand as the best and most accurate presentation of the prehistoric animal world available.
Customer Reviews:
An engrossing and informative volume for laymen or experts.......2005-02-09
This volume is the best one I've found on prehistoric creatures. Having always been fascinated by them, I wanted as an adult to find something to broaden the base I'd built as a kid obsessed with Tyrannosaurus and trilobites. Though I'm far from a paleontologist or even a biologist (my own training is in anthropology and linguistics) I find this book a pleasure to browse and consult.
Beginning with the earliest worm-like organisms and evolving through the early fish, amphibians and armored sea creatures, the book continues on up through dinosaurs, Pleistocene megafauna and finally simians and hominids. The desciptions are brief but seem informative, but it is the quality of the artwork that I value most. I never tire of looking at the colorful depictions of the denizens of Devonian swamps, Ordovician seas and Jurassic forests.
So, while I cannot pretend to be an authority, and though I certainly must defer some credibility and ask that you look at my review in conjunction with those of my fellow critics who disagree, I offer my personal recommendation on this book to any person interested in prehistoric life and what it must have been like.
Engaging at first, but then the flaws ..........2000-07-04
This book looked great at first, but then, on closer inspection, the drawings are second-rate, the information is thin, and the inaccuracies mount. Yet, there are no real alternatives that seek to comprehensively catalogue ancient life. I'd still buy it, but my enthusiasm has waned.
On the second thought..........2000-02-24
Several months after acquiring the book I leaf through it and wonder how I could have given it such a high rating as I did. It has flaws throughout!
- The book appears to have a drastic shortage of species to list - it is only half as thick as Simon and Schuster's Encyclopedia of Animals - despite the fact that on numerous occasions they list but one or two species from a thirty-species family;
- The art is severely degraded from the above mentioned encyclopedia of animals. While I can see the puzzlement concerning the colors of the creatures' hides, there is no excuse for the the sloppy drawings of several of the animals! If you make a conjecture, please, be sure to follow through! On several of the animals the hair cover fails to obey the laws of physics, and most of the amphibians look like a horrid joke.
- The information is sketchy at best - on numerous occasions special biological mechanisms are mentioned (like a new jaw bone arrangement for the fishes, and the skull structures of the early land animals), yet are never explained in function. Almost all species are captioned with the basics like weight and dimensions followed with senseless filler.
- The between-section class summarizations and the cladistic graphs are also very, very basic. While I understand that the book was not intended for specialists, even the basic layman will find the charts a bit "dumbed down".
This book is flashy and artful, but lacking, lacking a great lot.
An incredible work.......1999-12-28
I have always longed for such a book. Probably it's a grave mistake on my part to make that the firt sentense of a review, but still. I daresay, anyone who has ever been in the very least intereste in paleontology has always longed for this sort of tome. The authors have satisfied both our love of visuals ( pictures are abundant - they accompiny every entry, in full blazing color by very trustworthy artists, generally sure to catch anyone's eye) and our love of the unknown ( this is the first non-specialist book that I have seen that goes beyond the everyday banal creatures like the pachycephalosaurus and the pterosaurids). This book is sheer pleasure while doing any sort of research, even for the specialists who need solid information. Perhaps there isn't quite enough data with every entry ( due to page limits), but the information that is included is accurate and up-to-date. This is a very good book.
Fascinating pictures and fascinating text !.......1999-11-10
I have been looked for such a book for a long time, and now I have it. Reading this book is delightful, as it gives you plenty of informations about prehistoric animals in a very attractive manner. You have very nice pictures of all animals, with a short explanation giving all essential data about them (size, anatomic singularities, food habits, ...). In addition, extremely interesting introducing sections give you a vision of each branch of animals, together with explanations on the evolutionary process concerning them.
This very up-to-date pictorial guide to now disappeared animals is a treasure for anybody interested in evolution and diversification of life. It gives you enough matter to become a specialist in this domain ! If you want to have one book on dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, make it be this one.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Presumably this is aimed at children as a brief overview. Mostly a waste of time for anyone that knows anything about the topic, other than as a quick browse, or a chance to pick up a different creature, beastie, or monster. So this is much more in the vein of a picture book for kids, as far as I can tell.
Good info.......2007-08-14
This is a pretty great book. We love all sorts of books full of facts... and this is one of them. Nice addition to any book collection.

This Book Is Amazing!!!.......2007-08-11
If you love mythology/fantasy, then you're going to love this book. It makes it sound like these creatures actually do exist, and I know it has helped me. It has helped me with school, understanding TV and other books, and it has also helped me write my own stories. This is a really great book! I reread it all the time. This is the most relieable of all fantasy encyclopedias I have!
I absolutely loved it... You have to get it.......2007-07-13
Thsi book was absolutely great. Very entertaining if you're quite bored. Also good for those who love reading mthys and legends.
Disappointing.......2007-05-23
Fantasy Encyclopedia
by Judy Allen
Fantasy Encyclopedia is meant for Grades 4-8 students and library use. You'd expect a full-color large-format fantasy encyclopedia to be a wonderful library edition. But this book is disappointing in its scope and in its depth. The book is a guide to the creatures and peoples of fantasy, mythology, and folklore. Over 50 character types are covered in 9 chapters.
The chapters cover "The Little People," "Mysterious Animals," "Ghosts and Spirits," etc. Each major section in a chapter has a few introductory paragraphs followed by illustrations with captions. This by itself is not so bad, but the book then adds plugs for popular movies and books in which the creatures appeared. So you get disgenuine references to Narnia, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc. You don't get a real feel for how these creatures are used in fantasy. You do get the sense that references to Narnia, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings are placements. A more thorough treatment of the subject would have included much more detail and a better cross section with much better sampling.
Hopefully a revised and significantly expanded edition is in the works.

Love it!.......2007-05-13
My 3 year old twins love this book! And I know they will enjoy it for many years to come!
Highly recommend this book!
Quick Service.......2007-01-11
This item was a present for a small friend so it was important it arrived on time and in good shape and I am happy to say it did!
Good, solid kids encyclopedia.......2006-02-27
This encyclopedia is a good introduction into the animal kingdom. It does read well and the illustrations and imagery are well done. The categories make looking up animal groups a breeze. There is enough detail and close ups on the smaller animals, which really helps with understanding the animals.
Even the rediculous representation of the T-Rex found in the Big Dinosaur Book by DK makes a cameo, which we found amusing.
Overall a worthy purchase, promising long use.
My son's favorite present!!.......2005-12-15
I bought this encyclopedia for my son's 7th birthday. It was his favorite gift, hands down. He still takes it with him everywhere. The book is full of pictures and lots of neat facts that are enough to challenge a 7 year old, but concise enough that he can read them simply. The book is split up into different categories of animals: Mammals, Creepy Crawlies, Birds, Reptiles, etc. Then each category has pages for different types of that creature. For example, mammals has ocean mammals, horses, marsupials, flying mammals, etc. The pictures are wonderful, and as I said, the amount of text is just right. I am so glad I bought this. My son is happy to sit for hours on end looking at this book. I highly recommend it for any animal loving child.
