    Book Description

Did you know that chickens have different alarm calls for different predators? This fascinating dictionary covers every aspect of animal behaviour and includes terms from the related fields of ecology, physiology and psychology. Clear, concise entries are backed up by specific examples where appropriate, covering all aspects of behaviour from aggression to courtship, and fully cross-referenced. The author, David McFarland, was formerly head of the Animal Behaviour Research Group at Oxford University, and the editor of the Oxford Companion to Animal Behaviour (1981). Jargon free and informative, this dictionary is an excellent source of reference for students of biology and psychology, and essential reading for naturalists, bird-watchers, and the general reader with an interest in animal behaviour.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for.......2003-06-19

This was a great portable guide for Savannah. We were only there for 3 days and we went to a number of the restaurants and sites listed. I had also bought Moon Guides' Savannah and Charleston book and it was not as well organized as this guide was. It fit perfect into my little bag also.

I did not find this book any more helpful than the Charleston Area 2003 Official Visitors Guide that I ordered for free on the internet (I'd give you the url, but it's not allowed, so do a search). It did offer information on hotels, which the free guide did not. However, the free book gave more information on local events, tours, and sightseeing. This book is not worth the money, get the free one!

                    Book Description

In this first entry in the National Museum of the American Indian series My World: Young Native Americans Today, Naiche Woosah Tayac, a member of the Piscataway tribe, takes the reader through his day at school, traces the history of his tribe and ancestors, and describes his people's ceremonies and customs. Produced in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution, Meet Naiche offers a rare glimpse into the modern culture and family life of an ancient tribe while celebrating Native American history and traditions.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an accurate view of today's Native American.......2002-10-12

This is a timely book, especially with the typical flurry of Native American activities that start in November in schools around the nation. One of the best qualities of this book is that it shows that Naiche is like any other American boy: has a family, lives in a house, eats pizza, plays soccer, and wears cargo pants. Native Americans are still the subject of stereotypes fueled by many aspects of society. For example, sports team mascots that reinforce people's ignorance. This book goes a long way toward showing that Native children have the same dreams and needs as all of our children.

This is a beautifully written and photographed book that should be on every teacher's reading list, public library, and family bookshelves.

5 out of 5 stars Much Needed Resource for East Coast.......2002-09-24

Having seen an advance copy of this extremely informative and enjoyable book, I can urge teachers and parents looking for entertaining material on how Native Americans in the East live today to buy this book. It tells the story of a multi-tribal boy and his daily life. Dr. Tayac has an engaging writing style and the history and culture are presented in a very accessible manner.

4 out of 5 stars Native Boy Tale Charms Kids of All Cultures.......2002-09-24

Naiche is described so stirringly in this book by Dr. Tayac that any native or non-native American would want to know him. Many American children in 2002 grow up multi-culturally and this wonderfully written children's book clearly evokes a compelling portrait of Naiche's world. The richness of Naiche's Indian culture will expand the horizons of any child who reads this page turner.

5 out of 5 stars Meet Naiche Hits the Mark.......2002-09-24

This book will inform and entertain youngsters from second to sixth grade. Youngsters from about third to sixth grade can read this book independently while first and second graders can have it read to them. It demonstrates the daily life of a real native child and shows how many American Indian children live in the eastern region of the U.S. today. It also corrects common beliefs that many youngsters between ages 6 and 11 or 12 hold, that native children live in teepees and wear deerskin clothes etc. The author, Dr. Gabrielle Tayac, a Piscataway Indian and Naiche's cousin writes clearly and is obviously familiar with her reader and subject. She knows Naiche and his family well and communicates this to her audience in a interesting manner. The photography and the text mesh beautifully to tell the true life story of a contemporary native family through the eyes of a child.

Featuring a day in the life of a young Hopi girl living in Arizona, this is the second book in a series produced in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution. Meet Mindy: A Native Girl from the Southwest takes the reader on a journey into the rich history and contemporary culture of the Hopi tribe, as seen through the eyes of one of its members, 14-year-old Mindy. Mindy proudly describes her family and her village, talks about the traditional coming-of-age ceremony that prepares her for later marriage and motherhood, and much more. John Harrington's photographs capture the vibrancy of a girl who lives successfully in two worlds.

I couldn't resist a book with my name in it, and I was pleased to find that this book was very good. It follows Mindy, a teenage Native American girl of the Hopi and Tewa tribes in Arizona, through the Corn Grinding Ceremony and the Yah-ne-wah Dance. The majority of the book is told in the first person in simple, readable language easily understood by 4th to 6th graders. A few pages at the beginning give a brief overview of Hopi history and culture, and a few pages at the end take readers through a description of a Hopi year through the seasons. The "About the Author" section starts the book, which makes for a weak beginning. Nonetheless this book is a browser's delight. Every page has brightly colored photographs illustrating the story. Not to mention, it is full of information about Hopi culture. This book will find a home on school and public library shelves.

5 out of 5 stars Following Mindy through her coming-of-age ceremony.......2004-01-15

The second book in the impressive "My World: Young Native Americans Today" series from Beyond Words Publishing, Meet Mindy: A Native Girl From The Southwest by Susan Secakuku (and profusely illustrated with the color photography of John Harrington) introduces young readers to Mindy, a girl who tells of the Hopi and Tewa peoples of Arizona. Following Mindy through her coming-of-age ceremony, as well as offering an amazing look at Hopi culture including agriculture, weaving baskets, making clay pots, traditional dances, and much more, Meet Mindy is a captivating look into a rich and enduring Native American culture.

The Vikings, Columbus, Cabot, Balboa, Ponce de Leon, Cortes, Cartier, Coronado--from 1000 to the 1540s, Europeans explorers were making a mad dash to the Americas. They claimed they had "discovered" a "New World." Of course this was news to the people who'd been living in the Americas for thousands of years. People who had built palaces, bathrooms with steam baths, cities. People who had GOLD! It was inevitable: New World and Old World collided!

5 out of 5 stars A fun way to learn about the European Explorers.......2006-03-27

I have a class set of this book to read with 4th and 5th grade students and they love it! It is so much more fun than reading from a dry textbook. I have loaned the book to other teachers, and have heard only positive comments. I noticed some reviews about Terry Deary and that this book isn't as well done. I totally disagree. Having read the Terry Deary books "Cut-Throat Celts" and "Measly Middle Ages," I think the Levy books are much better. Read and see for yourself, but I found them very educational and humorous.

4 out of 5 stars Does NOT "read like a textbook"!.......2006-01-28

I disagree with the last reviewer -- he or she has obviously not seen a Social Studies textbook in a very long time! The American Horrible Histories, while nowhere near as funny as Terry Deary's British ones, are still great for kids to learn history. They're just not silly, gross-out books (qualities which are characteristic of Deary's more enjoyable volumes), which means they're not as much fun for adults. But I'd say they could be incredibly useful for fifth graders. (I teach seventh grade, and use them all the time for my struggling readers, who really enjoy them.)

1 out of 5 stars Are We There Yet?.......2005-07-12

This book was much less funny than the Horrible Histories made by Terry Deary. It was not fun to read and I remember waiting and waiting for the end to come. I don't think many people would enjoy this book because it was no fun to read.

1 out of 5 stars Not a patch on the original.......2004-05-12

Terry Deary writes the original Horrible Histories. They're interesting, witty, and even educational. Kids and adults alike read them for fun! Read them.

Elizabeth Levy's "American Horrible Histories", however, are dull, unfunny, and while they are "educational", I can't see anyone reading them for fun. It reads like a text book.

                            Book Description

An exploration of the literature, history, and culture of people of mixed African American and Native American descent, When Brer Rabbit Meets Coyote is the first book to theorize an African-Native American literary tradition. In examining this overlooked tradition, the book prompts a reconsideration of interracial relations in American history and literature. Jonathan Brennan, in a sweeping historical and analytical introduction to this collection of essays, surveys several centuries of literature in the context of the historical and cultural exchange and development of distinct African-Native American traditions. Positing a new African-Native American literary theory, he illuminates the roles subjectivity, situational identities, and strategic discourse play in defining African-Native American literatures. Brennan provides a thorough background to the literary tradition and a valuable overview to topics discussed in the essays. He examines African-Native American political and historical texts, travel narratives, and the Mardi Gras Indian tradition, suggesting that this evolving oral tradition parallels the development of numerous Black Indian literary traditions in the United States and Latin America.

The diverse essays cover a range of literatures from African-Native American mythology among the Seminoles and mixed folktales among the Cherokee to autobiography, fiction, poetry, and captivity narratives. Contributors discuss, among other topics, the Brer Rabbit tales, shifting identities in African-Native American communities, the "creolization" of African American and Native American mythologies and religions, and Mardi Gras Indian performance. Also considered are Alice Walker's development of an African-Native American identity in her fiction and essays and African-Native American subjectivity in the works of Toni Morrison and Sherman Alexie.

                                  Book Description

The author begins this challenging monograph by probing Modernism's surfaces and subjects, its public and private meanings, in order to establish Johns's importance as the modern allegorical artist in the years after Abstract Expressionism. Yet, Figuring Jasper Johns is not an essay that presumes to offer an instant interpretation. Rather, Fred Orton self-consciously constructs a "Jasper Johns" whose work is introduced and explained in three chapters, each of which addresses a specific picture or sculpture like Flag, Painted Bronze (Savarin) and Untitled 1992. These in-depth studies situate individual works in their social context as well as in Johns's oeuvre.Fred Orton's purpose is to get to terms with – and find terms for – a difficult and elusive body of work by one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

1 out of 5 stars An effort too far in repetitious jargon.......2004-09-23

I found this book to be pretentiously over complexified. The relationship between object and surface has been aptly documented by many other art historians of the late 20thC.
I think that Fred has in this case over analysed too few works by the great artist, flag to me and many of the people I have discussed it with is far too complex a work for a man like Orton to even vaguely comment on critically. He appears to my other academic associates and I to be slightly out of his depth at this level, and in future would do well to perhaps abandon the bottle of Gin which he is widely known to keep under his desk, and to consequently write something worthwhile and not liquer-induced.
Mr Orton, I am not your fan.
