    Book Description

Europe's most infamous city remains one of its most popular, and not without good reason: between its world-class art museums, its eminent canals that are perfect for wandering, and its coffee shops that don't exactly specialize in coffee, its variety is glorious indeed. However, with one of Europe's more forward-thinking cultural scenes and striking new architectural developments in IJburg and the Bijlmermeer, there's much more here to enjoy than the clichés; written, researched and edited entirely by locals, the Time Out Amsterdam guide tells travelers all about it. Highlights include Amsterdam after dark - the best restaurants, bars, and nightclubs in the city; an unmatched section on the city's cultural scene including galleries, performance art, classical music, and theater; and trips beyond Amsterdam to the flower auction in Aalsmeer, the cheese market at Gouda, and the windmills of Alblasserdam.

I bought this book before going to amsterdam for the first time and was totally disappointed whenever I followed it's advice. In fact it is simply surprizing how bad the restaurant selection was. They should be called places to avoid. Amsterdam is full neat stuff. My advice find hotel online, buy a ticket and just go. Reading this travle guide is just wasting your time.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-01-30

I'm a dedicated Timeout Guide user. Time out guides are not for the budget conscious...if you have disposable income and aren't financially constrained, Time out is a wonderful guide...and the people of Timeout did their typical informative, witty reviews in a great book. No complaints, and Amsterdam is just damn cool. One note...do not stay at the 5 star Bilderburg Garden hotel...it's more like a top end 3 star / low end 4 star.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulously compact yet thorough.......2001-07-31

I brought several books on a recent trip to Amsterdam, but this was the only one I used while walking and sightseeing. The book's small size makes it convenient to hold, but don't be fooled: this book is jam-packed with useful information. The maps in the back are indispensable, and, unlike the Eyewitness Travel Guides, which are also great, this book lists a good number of budget accomodations and also provides important details (time open, admission prices, etc) that I found, for the most part, very accurate. The section on what to do outside Amsterdam was also extremely useful.

Case in point: My glasses broke during the trip, and the book actually listed places to get them fixed or replaced! It was amazing how much practical information they squeezed into a small book.

The only thing I wish would change about the book is a more detailed guide to what documents are needed to travel in Amsterdam, and where you can use American ATM cards other than AmEx, if they do exist.

Overall, the best travel guide I've seen to Amsterdam!

2 out of 5 stars Save your money and visit the Time Out Web site.......2001-03-13

I bought this guide hoping it would give me more information on Amsterdam nightlife. It did, but it was nothing I couldn't have gotten from their Web site.

Buy the Eyewitness Guide to Amsterdam, which is organized by area. It's visually pleasing and really helps you decide what you would like to do. The Time Out guide is organized by topic (for example, Accommodations, Restaurants, Art and Entertainment), and it's impossible to tell where these things are in relationship to where you are or where your hotel is. There are maps in the back of the book that are helpful, and I do like how for many of the topics they list the "Top Five". Again, much of this information is available at the Time Out Web site so I wouldn't waste my money. Buy the solid touristy Eyewitness guide and get the low down on restaurants, nightclubs, and coffee shops at the Time Out Web site.

if you're going to amsterdam, there's probably a few different reasons why, and this book covers them all. i'd recommend it mostly to younger folks, or the young-at-heart. a great all around guide, with detail of night-life, eating & drinking (...etc), and great things to see and do. it's written by locals, so the info is accurate. i used a friend's while i was there, and now and buying my own now that i'm back in the states!...it will live in your pocket while you're there!

Lets face it, your not just going to Amsterdam to see Ann Frank's house, your going to visit the notorious coffeeshops. This book starts you off with the history of Amsterdam, and it then breaks off into different sections like hotels and restuarants. Some guides might not stray into the touchy subjects such as prostitution and drugs. Yet this guide does not fear these. It has its own sections on sex and coffeeshops. It lists names of hotels, restuarants, and coffeshops all including a small description. The colored photos are also a nice part to the guide. The guide is also very easy to navigate through. If you purchase this guide, also purchase an Amsterdam map as with this guide, it does not have a pullout map or a very detailed one in the first place. It also does not have a star-rating system which is a minor let down. You might think about the Michelin guide because of its star rating system yet the Michelin guide is a bit conservative. It does not explore sex and drugs. None the less, this guide is extremely informative and will work very well with a color pullout map to help you navigate through the streets of Amsterdam.

4 out of 5 stars Great starting point - but only to fill a week-long tour,.......1999-05-03

It's another typically consistent offering from the Time Out series. For visitors wanting the most superficial introduction to the rich history of the city of Amsterdam and the outlying districts, its a good read, but the reviews of the restaurants and bars etc. can be slightly outdated, though the whole concept of "gezellig" means that atmosphere may never be consistent. Good tool for the arsenal for the prepared traveller, though, as usual, nothing beats experience and experimentation.

For amazing insight into history of city, visit Amsterdam Historische Museum - always empty - ancheck in advance the opening of the museums such as Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum as book can be out of date - very disappointing.

I love the Time Out giudebooks series .....except for the Amsterdam book. The information in Time Out Amsterdam is well out-dated. There are very few current hotspots listed....we had to hope to stumble upon them ourselves. Some of the most basic popular "trendy" places aren't even listed. And the two low-budget hotels we stayed in were not only horrific (at one we were accosted by the owner of the pension, drunk, at 5 a.m.) but they weren't even very low-budget. Time Out, please update Amsterdam!

Do cats dream? Can they see in the dark? Are a cat's whiskers feelers? Do they really have nine lives? Patricia Lauber uses a true-or-false format to explore the questions that many cat lovers wonder about and to share fascinating details on feline history, science, legend, language, and mysteries. Rosalyn Schanzer's well-researched illustrations add to the whimsy and fun—and are likely to make readers yearn for a cat of their own if they don't already have one.

They howl along with our singing, ward off strangers with their fierce barking, and welcome us at the door before we reach it.

The animal-loving duo who created The True-or-False Book of Cats and The True-or-False Book of Horses teams up once again, this time to pay homage to our canine companions. In her accessible true-or-false format, Newbery Honor author Patricia Lauber enlightens the curious. She tells the whole story -- how certain wolves became dogs and how dogs became specialized while retaining wolflike traits. Rosalyn Schanzer shows forty different breeds of dog here -- as well as several mixed-breed varieties. With her caring touch, she captures the qualities that make us love them so.

Whether you're the proud owner of a St. Bernard or dream of adopting a chihuahua, this book is for you. The friendship between you and your dog carries on a relationship that has lasted for thousands of years.

Makes true-or-false statements like: "Only some doges are descended from wolves" and "A dog's body may tell of its feelings." Readers will know the answer after reading several paragraphs on each topic. Contains friendly illustrations that identify a number of dog breeds. Younger children may like this book read to them. Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

4 out of 5 stars great for dog lovers.......2003-12-19

This is a wonderful book with questions about dogs listed on each page. After the statement it ask true or false. Then it goes on to tell you the answer. You will learn the answer to questions like Do dogs hear more than people do? Did ancient Egyptians breed dogs as well as cats? Do dogs see what we see?

The book might have been more interesting to dog lovers if it included real photographs of real dogs instead of paintned ones. It was still a neat book with lots of cool facts on dogs.

We would recommed this book to all dog lovers. This is a fun and educational way to learn more about your pet.

Published on the occasion of a major international traveling exhibition organized by the U.S. Library of Congress and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany (holders of the two richest Eames collections in the world), this comprehensive volume is a testament to the Eameses' belief that good design could improve people's lives. From the 1940s to the 1970s, the prolific husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames designed furniture, buildings, exhibitions, and interiors, and made films. They are perhaps best known for the form-fitting chairs that were mass-produced using the same techniques the Eameses developed in their first apartment. Taking a multifaceted approach to their multifaceted careers, this comprehensive, clothbound volume with French folds includes a filmography, making clear the pair's profound influence on the visual vernacular of the 20th century.

                        Book Description

From the 1940s to the 1970s, the Los Angeles-based husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames practiced design at its most virtuous and its most expansive. Their furniture, toys, buildings, films, graphics, exhibitions, and books all aimed to improve society-not only functionally but also culturally and intellectually. The essays in this handsome and generously illustrated volume examine the Eameses' projects in the contexts of science, corporate patronage, and politics as well as those of modern design, architecture, and art.

4 out of 5 stars Charles and Ray Eames: Discover them for yourself.......2006-03-23

An interesting couple who remained highly creative through the span of their careers. I first discovered their work as a child when I saw their brilliant film "Powers of 10". I intend on picking up more books of their work. Great reference for designers and architects.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK TOGETHER WITH "EAMES DESIGN" BY JOHN NEUHART AND MARILYN NEUHART.......2006-01-15

Charles and Ray Eames were not only creative artistic talents, they were also commercial geniuses (just like George Nelson was). These two talents provided the secret for success that would reward them throughout their life. This book gives a good view about the creative talent of Charles and Ray Eames had.
But I would also suggest to purchase the book "Eames Design" by John Neuhart which I also thought was wonderful. If you like modern design I also suggest to visit the wonderful online archive about George Nelson at WWW.GEORGENELSON.ORG and if you like 1960's design also check the museum archive from Verner Panton at WWW.VERNERPANTON.COM

                        5 out of 5 stars Modern Design @ it's best!!.......2002-04-13

Words don't do justice to the work & imagination of Ray & Charles Eames! This is a beautiful book covering the creative minds of two of the best modern furniture designers. Filled with great pictures, & very complete text of their design & the many other things they created besides furniture. The Eames' are my biased favorite, if you love modern 50's furniture, fabric, & art you must have this book. They worked for the infamous Herman Miller company, who has reissued many of the Eames furniture pieces available again today. As creator of the modern molded fiberglass chair, & molded plywood, the Museaum Of Modern Art has Charles' chairs as Art, which they are & comfortable too!More than comparable to their Danish counterparts, this couple brought us sleek, smooth lined furniture that will take us into the space age for at least another fifty years!(check out A.I.-incredible backgrounds of modern furniture!)

                        5 out of 5 stars Everything Eames.......2001-07-06

This is a wonderful addition to any coffee table! I learned so much about this creative couple that I never knew before. The pictures are A+ & very well done. If you are a fan of Eames furniture, you cannot live without this book!!

                        5 out of 5 stars Founders of a Profession.......2000-08-23

The Eamses were innovators in many fields such as Architecture, furniture design, film, etc. But to my mind their gretest acheivement was the definition of a new profession, 'Graphic Design', or as I beleive they called it, a 'Design Office'.

Up till then, there was 'Commercial Art', and 'Art Departments', and whatever styling was applied to an industrial product was done as an afterthought, and usually by an amateur.

After The Eamses, a new recognition that the design of appearances was a craft and a profession, and not just an art, was born.

This book demonstrates in many ways, how Ray and Charles Eames applied this and many other insights to the various fields of endeavor that they entered and changed forever.
