ASIN: 0374399670
Release Date: 2007-02-20 |
Book Description
Against the rhythmic background of turning seasons, a little fox learns that there is a time for everything. The rain, the clouds, the days all come and go as the little fox, guided by his wise and loving parents, learns to hunt on his own and bury his food, cover his trail and run like the wind. Now he is ready to go out on his own.
As depicted by an award-winning pair, the gentle story of the rearing of a baby fox, together with sensuous illustrations, takes readers on a journey deep into the woods to tell a tale that all will recognize – that of growing up and moving out.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful little book.......2007-07-18
My son picked out this book at the library, and I was pleasantly surprised. If you've ever let a three year old choose his own books, you know it's a little like playing the lottery; very seldom do you get any return on the investment.
But Fox is beautifully illustrated and gently worded. The language is complex and rhythmic enough to satisfy us both, and the message is a nice one: parents protect you and teach you and let you be independent when you've learned enough to do so safely. In our generation of "helicopter parents" I think a few adults could benefit from this book!
My son and I are also always happy to see nursing references in a book (Fox is a mammal, mama!) and this book mentions it on the page following Fox's birth.

Customer Reviews:
one of the best fall books.......2007-09-08
As a former teacher I have shared many a books with classes. This one I promise will mesmerize children and delight adults as well. It is heartfelt, childlike, innocent, and captivating. I would recommend this book as a great gift book and a must have for your personal library.
We love Fletcher.......2007-07-04
Originally got this book from the library and we loved it so much we went out and bought it. Fletcher is so adorable trying to keep the leaves on the tree. Sure to become a classic.
A story about a young little fox who loved a tree........2007-01-21
I thought this was a nice book to read. It had 17 scenes to it. Many were just 1-page long. The text was pretty good, and the illustrations were excellent if watercolor images are your cup of tea.
The story is set in the late fall to early winter and is about a little fox named Fletcher who cares very much for a large tree. Apparently Fletcher is less than a year old because he doesn't know that trees normally lose their leaves in the fall season. He seems to think that when the leaves fall off that the tree is not doing too well.
The book will probably be a great tool to help enlighten a young child about seasons and how trees grow leaves in the spring and lose their leaves in the fall. I'm not sure the text makes us develop any great feeling for Fletcher. Nor do the pictures really stand out. Thus, it probably is not a book that kids will want read to them time and time again.
I would have liked the book better if the illustrations had been great drawings rather than mediocre watercolors. And I also would have liked to see the life of a tree featured for an entire year rather than just September to December or whatever. 4 stars!
Kids will find the story of the changing seasons intriguing........2007-01-06
It's autumn and Fletcher's favorite tree is changing colors and losing its leaves, worrying him. All his plans to help his tree friend won't work and he sees the last leaf fall and faces a feeling of failure, despite what everyone tells him - until on the first day of winter his tree presents him with a big surprise. Kids will find the story of the changing seasons intriguing.
Beautiful book -- love the art and the message!.......2007-01-04
This is a great book to teach the little ones about the change in seasons (from Fall to Winter). It also teaches about caring for others. My son loved it and the art is really beautiful. Great book!

Customer Reviews:
Balancing The Scales of Nature.......2002-11-20
A study in the perserverance and dedication of a group of people to bring the wolf back to its own enviroment in the wildernesses of Yellowstone Montanna. Full of information this book will elate you as well as sadden you, but the winner here of course is the wolf who once more runs free on his land.
Excellent overview of the wolf's history & current issues.......2002-09-02
Jim Brandenberg always brings the wolf into our homes vividly and with great skill through his photographs, and in this book, these exquisite photos are paired up with the informative writing of Stephen Swinburne. Swinburne covers an excellent range of topics in this short (but highly-informative) book, including the history of the wolf's extermination in this country, early conservationists, wolf behavior and social structure, myth-busting, the Yellowstone project, and the wolf's future prospects.
He brings in quotes and information from Leopold, Mech, Bangs, Askins, and many other notable figures in the wolf conservation movement to give correct facts and information. I wouldn't call this a book for younger children; it's written at perhaps a teenager's level, and younger children might find the statistics and assorted other information boring. However, Swinburne does cover the bittersweet story of wolves Numbers Nine and Ten, which personalizes the struggles wolves today face.
Swinburne manages to succinctly cover most of the important issues in this relatively brief book (about a half hour's read, perhaps 45 minutes,) and it's a great way to educate yourself or someone else on the basics of wolf conservation. Highly-recommended!
What a great book!.......2000-07-29
I just took a look at this book and was so impressed. The subject is fascinating, of course, but I'm especially taken with the clear, cogent writing, the terrific quotes, and the truly remarkable photographs. I definitely recommend this for any kid (or adult, for that matter) with an interest in wildlife.
a thoroughly moving natural history lesson for all ages.......2000-06-07
My 7 year old and I read this book together recently and I think that I learned as much as she did.
I knew about reintroduction of wild wolves into Yellowstone but this book told the whole story. Get ready to be impressed with personal sagas of determination and bravery on the part of people who care about wild things.
In 1973, while on a field trip in Jasper Park, Alberta, I saw two wild wolves (a white and a black) bounding and romping in the snow. I will never forget the wildness of that sight. This book is richly illustrated with photographs of wolves that give you a glimpse of that wildness.
Get this book and read it with a child to share what Rachel Carson called that "sense of wonder" that children have. Be prepared to explain why we systematically exterminated the wolf from its range throughout the United States and why we paid people to kill wolf puppies.
This book is a moving, thoughtful lesson in ecology for children of all ages.

This is the best children's book I have read in years. Adam Relf is very talented. I have ordered and preordered his other two books.
Everyone Loves This Story.......2006-09-22
My daughter loved this book at 5 years old and still loves it at 6. She loves the wonderful illustrations and the story of friendship. She has labeled this one as one of her favorites. I love the large pictures - it was perfect to read to her Kindergarten class in the Fall. Even my youngest daughter at 2 1/2 loves it. I highly recommend it.
Absolutely Adorable.......2006-04-08
This picture book is so refreshingly sweet and innocent. It immediately became a favorite of mine.
A book for everyone.......2005-10-17
This is one of the sweetest children's book I've ever read. It writing and art have such an innocence unlike anything in today's world. It's definitely a book for kid's of all ages.
Fox Makes Friends.......2005-09-20
This is a very sweet book about a little fox who sets out to literally make a friend with sticks and such. In the process other critters lend a hand and eventually Fox ends up with quite a few real friends.
My son is two and a half and just learning how to make friends. We are voracious readers and this is not an overdone subject. Plus, it is very applicable to a child's social development. Besides, I liked it, too.

Customer Reviews:
Hermit Crabs owners manual.......2006-11-22
I found the book to be extremely informative and helpful.
there was a great deal of information that i found very useful. Very pleased with this product.
Great Crabby Book.......2006-02-20
With there not being out the in pet stores on how to care for your hermies, this book is very helpful for the novice owner or even for a brush up for someone more experienced. I like to try and read as much as I can. It explains the background of the species as well as how to care for them properly. Thru that, it shows that they are NOT just a disposable pet to live in a little plastic container w/ a 1/4 inch of sand :-( hopefully someday that philosophy will change. They are so interesting and can live a very long time if taken care of properly. It is only a lot of work if you do not have the time.
Very Informative Book on Hermit Crab Care.......2005-09-21
This book has everything that the novice hermit crab owner needs to know to take care of and enjoy their hermit crabs! Information on food, water, environment and behavior can be found easily. This book really helped us learn about our new pets!
AWESOME GUIDE.......2004-01-03
I bought this book and WOW, it totally helped me take care of my hermit crab Sidney. It tells you all that you need to know to let your hermit crab live safely and happily ever after!
Great Book!.......2003-05-18
For your first hermit crab's health and happiness, you need to get this book!
It's filled with all of the basics you need to properly care for your new pet, plus little bonuses about their history and hermies in the wild!

Book Description
Vast and featureless, Nevada's Black Rock Desert is the largest flat area on the continent, where the sound barrier was broken in a car. It is a place of total silence--not even birds or insects live here--except when thousands of humans congregate for the Burning Man Festival on Labor Day weekend. Writer William Fox and photographer Mark Klett now turn their combined talents to an appreciation of this desolate corner of North America, inviting readers to consider how the mind responds to a place so empty that it's both physically overpowering and psychically disorienting.
