ONE OF THE MORE HELPFUL BOOKS ON THIS SUBJECT OUT THERE........2007-09-15
I found this work to be most helpful. It provides step by step instructions and is great for the beginner. The book is full of designs for use with Polymer Clay and is quite detailed. The photography is great and quite clear. The text is full of helpful hints and tips as to techniques that are easy to follow. I also enjoyed the great ideas for projects I gleaned from this work. One of the strong areas of this book, unlike some others I have in my collection, is that the author does not assume that you already know something and goes ahead and explains even simple steps. The only weakness I found was that some of the information is just a bit dated as so much progress has been made in this field over the past two or three years. This is not a big problem though as there certainly is no "bad" information. This is a good one to add to your collection as it is nice to have on hand to answer questions as you are working. It is also a very handy book to have if you happen to be teaching a course in working with Polymer clays. The instructions here can be worked into a lesson plan quite nicely. Highly recommend.
Good book to teach canes and give examples.......2005-12-16
The author shows how to make canes and that is pretty much all that is in this book. Not much if you are looking for other techniques.

Im new at polymer clay and this book is just perfect.Ive loaned it out but kept track of it so no one forgets to bring it back too..I really couldnt have learned so much about canning and the craft of beads in polymer clay without this book..ITs a must add to your clay library.Mrs.C.

This book got me into making jewelry. It has everything from the very simple, to complex canework. I've taken many of the examples in this book and made them into my own design. I would definitly recomend this book for anyone, if your just starting out or you already know what your doing.
Colorful projects ranging from basic to challenging.......2000-07-21
Creative Clay Jewelry is one of the many books that attempt to cover polymer clay work from the very basics to quite advanced. While other books are probably more successful at that (Sue Heaser's Polymer Clay Techniques Book, for example), Creative Clay Jewelry has some good projects and solid information, and would be quite useful to the beginning to intermediate clayer.
It's unfortunate that there's no real indication of level of difficulty in the projects; they don't follow any logical progression. Some of the early projects use very basic techniques only - jelly rolls, marbling - which could probably be discussed in the introduction section. However, just a few projects in, there's a geometric pattern that would be quite difficult and frustrating to do as your third or fourth PC project. I'd advise careful consideration when selecting a project from this book.
Dierks does provide a much more detailed ingredient list, including things like findings and clay amounts, which other books tend to skip. She even specifies particular brands and colors, but it isn't necessary to adhere to them.
On a more personal note, I got less use out of this book than most of my PC books, simply because the projects were very bright, busy, and colorful - and that's very far from my style. But for those who love the casual, cheerful look that polymer clay can provide, this book might well be great.

This book is testimony to the ignorance of many men. This book is written by a man who profits from plastics and pesticides. It cannot be trusted in the least. All of the data goes against common sense. This is one of those books that will have a place in museums in future years, showing future generations how and why our earth is in the state of chaos it will surely be in thanks to garbage like this.

Pesticide is a poison. If you think spraying poison on our food is going to improve anything, you've got another think coming. Sustainable agriculture puts back what it takes from the environment. Factory farming pollutes our air, water and soil. According to a study conducted by the Department of Economics at the University of Essex , industrial farms cause $34.7 billion worth of environmental damage in the U.S. each year. True, there have been cases of E. coli bactiria, but the is the result of improper handling, using fresh manure instead of allowing it to decompose properly first. And it isn't only organic foods that were grown in maure. And non-organic food is also sometimes grown in manure. And the pesticides kill bugs, not E. coli bacteria.
Recent studies have shown that sustainable crops contain higher levels of nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants, including vitamin C, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and polyphenols. Organic crops also have lower levels of certain toxic heavy metals. Better soil management (crop rotation, cover crops and composting) used in organic and sustainable farming helps enrich the soil and increase the concentration of vitamins and minerals in the plants. Chemical fertilizers, used on conventional, factory farmed crops, lower the nutrient content of the soil, increase the level of potentially harmful nitrates, and can contain certain toxic heavy metals which can be absorbed by the plants.
Pesticides are one of the most common toxic substances found in food. They can impair the immune system and cause diseases.
Pesticides can also affect the nervous system, endocrine (glands and hormones) system, immune system and reproductive system. Pesticides have been linked to Parkinson's disease, learning disabilities, hyperactivity, emotional disorders, weakened immune systems, and birth defects. Long after their use, pesticides remain in the soil and water. Despite being banned in 1972, DDT has been found in the breast milk of over 99% of all mothers in America. The American Association of Poison Control Centers estimates that in 2002, 69,000 children suffered from pesticide related poisoning or exposure to poisonous pesticides. According to Cornell entomologist David Pimentel, "It has been estimated that only 0.1% of applied pesticides reach the target pests, leaving the bulk of the pesticides (99.9%) to impact the environment."

Growing more per area is responsible for saving more land to the nature and High-yield Conservation is supported by two nobel peace prize laureates (Dr Norman Borlaug and Dr Oscar Arias) and many others. The book's tittle is a bit "drama oriented" in my oppinion: it seems that Mr Avery is trying to use the same tool that most environmentalist do.

The reviews I have seen here reflect more ignorance than I have encountered in a long time. Dennis T. Avery apparently doesn't know the first thing about human and environmental health, and unfortunately there are enough gullible Americans out there to perpetuate such blatantly self-indulgent ideas. It's ok not to care about your own health (with the environment and soil quality at its foundation), but not to consider the health of others is just irresponsible.

Disappointing!!!! Pass on it!.......2005-10-19
I had a great experience with my Frommer's Tuscany, so I tried this one. Frommer's Guides usually have very thorough descriptions of history and interesting tidbits. This aspect was reasonably, if cursorily, done; thus, being the only reason I gave the book 2 stars in stead of one. I disembarked from the plane this morning and could barely wait to write a review. I knew the prices were way off from the moment I received the book. I was looking at the recommended hotels online and the Guide was consistently 25-45 Euros low. That's a huge difference... sometimes nearly $100, but I was willing to let that slide. I found my own hotels. When I got to Berlin, for example, I discovered, with ease, fantastic, mainstream, hotels, pensions or resorts and spas a block or bus/tram ride away from ones that the Guide recommended. These surprisingly (relatively) inexpensive hotels were never even mentioned, though they were far superior. This happened again and again. The restuarants recommended, without exception, had the insanely terrible service (by German standards)or extremely mediocre food or both (but flashy!) and here the prices were surprizingly off as well. It made me feel as though all of the places mentioned had paid to be in the book! Thank goodness I brought 2 back-ups guides and started asking people (since I speak German)! I suggest, in lieu of this book, the Rough Guide and/or Let's Go Germany. Yes, they are also very mainstream, but their recommendations never failed. I was there for nearly 3 weeks and writers Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince were *so* wrong, I am returning their book to the publishing company.
Well written and grouped.......2005-07-26
I've used the Frommer's 2004 Japan with great success, and this book has many of the same traits that I enjoyed. The recommended sites are grouped in easy-to-visit clusters (and regions of large cities are described with easy to read maps nearby). Sidebars include listings of favorite activities (not always visiting the most prestigious museum either) and interesting tidbits about areas (including a memorial to Nazi book burnings that I haven't seen in any other travel guide...and it sounds like a very touching place to visit!). Definitely would recommend this book over any others.

I emphatically do not want to find out where all the sleaziest bars are. Travel guides are too full of this sort of thing. However, if you want to visit Germany and come away with a better understanding of the history and historical sites of the country, this book is for you. It offers an introduction to art and architecture, which, although minimal, is better than the Lonely Planet's and other competitors' offerings. The lack of an appropriate series of maps is a definite downside. The section on lodgings is too large. What we really need is for a Rick Steves-type to write the definitive guide to historical and geographical sites of interest.
Not perfect, but better than the competition: thus, four stars out of five.

Everytime I see a picture of this building it never ceases to take my breath away: just a spectacular building. This book is fascinating, I really had no idea all the controversy involved in building this building, it just seems so perfect for its harbor perch. The images in this book are wonderful and the text is very interesting and easy to follow. I find it amazing that the architect has never actually seen his masterpiece, how does that happen? The design is brilliant and totally original. Every city wants an icon and Sydney is lucky enough to have two, this building and the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and though each building is totally different in style, they are perfect foils for each other and they make the Sydney Harbor one of the most beautiful places on earth. Wonderful book on a spectacular building.

Great Book for a Great Building.......2007-08-14
Seeing the magnificent Sydney Opera House a few years back nearly brought me to tears; it's such an magnificent building. After that I got very interested in the saga of the building's design and construction, including the resignation of architect Jorn Utzon years before the project was finished.
The building is a marvel of architecture and engineering, yet the book is quite accessible for the non-expert who wants to get an appreciation for just how extraordinary achievement the building of the Sydney Opera House was for its time.
