Book Description
The aim of the Controlled Reproduction in Farm Animals Series is to provide a general review of the literature dealing with the different ways in which reproduction in the major farm mammals can be controlled and manipulated. It is effectively an expanded and new edition of a previous work, Controlled Breeding in Farm Animals (Pergamon Press, 1983). However, the literature on this subject has expanded so rapidly since the time of the earlier volume, that it is now thought appropriate to publish it in four separate volumes. Buffalo, goats, deer, and camelids have also been added to the species covered. The set of volumes will appeal to reproductive physiologists, animal scientists, and workers in veterinary medicine. Individual volumes should also be of value to all interested in the particular species covered.

Customer Reviews:
Getting to the core of the Big Apple.......2005-01-12
This edition of Let's Go has been nothing short of a lifesaver for me, a recent college graduate now living in New York for the first time. The unique coverage has allowed me to explore the hidden secrets of New York City and still have some cash left in my pocket. The guide includes information about all necessities of life for the large population of 20 somethings that reside in NY - bars of all different themes and crowds, the hippest restaurants, fitness facilities (which I have not yet seen in any other guide), and most importantly the treasures of the city that give a young person the true New York experience, such as Metro Naps and Magnolia Bakery.
I would definitely recommend this guide to anyone who is new to the city and is seeking the "New York" they have always dreamed of - with Let's Go New York, moving to such a new place can become an exciting, rather than intimidating, experience.

Book Description
This beautiful book examines the design achievements of Finland over the last seven decades, focusing on the central and decisive role played by Modernism. It discusses the work of such renowned architects and designers as Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck, as well as of manufacturers including Arabia and Marimekko.
Customer Reviews:
I expected more.......2005-10-07
I was disappointed to find that this book is essentially a museum catalog of a specific exhibition. While it is extremely well done as such, the collection of objects it represents is necessarily limited.
I make and design furniture, and was hoping to find more represented. The rather limited selection of objects shown are by Aalto and other very familiar designers. Practically nothing is shown from the new generation of Finns.
As an overview of 20th Century Finnish work, this book is ok. It is not particularly exciting and could be better organized, but unfortunately is one of the few works in English on the subject.
brilliant book... very discriptive.......2001-02-28
my favorite designer alvar aalto is featured in this very colorful and great book.. recommended!!
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2004-11-19
A very great book with over 400 color illustrations. And all the photographs are from actual baby books illustrated by great children's illustrators. These books are 1880 to 1930 period. Wonderful, cheerful illustrations... And there is a very unusual section featuring actual babies information from their actual baby book written by their mother! Fascinating! I never knew anything about these wonderful illustrators...
Book Description
The story of a grand estate erected at the turn of the last century, an embodiment of the excess of the Gilded Era.
<|
A "palace" ruled by a "queen," Harbor Hill in Roslyn, Long Island, was commissioned by the beautiful and imperious Katherine Duer Mackay, wife of one of the country's wealthiest men. The mansion, along with its magnificent furnishings, art, and gardens, and the owners' striving, hubris, and ultimate failure are the dramatis personae of this saga. Stanford White, Harbor Hill's architect, wrote, "with the exception of Biltmore, I do not think there will be an estate equal to it in the country." Detailing the extravagant product of the owners' desire for social acceptance, the story encompasses western mining and old versus new wealth, religious differences and the building of a church, art collecting, and many peoplefrom the architects, builders, and workers to the servants and staff who ran the house and gardens. Harbor Hill's story includes elements of farce and tragedy: in a sense an American portrait. 175 duotone and 8 color photographs.

I wish there was a book like this for every decade.......2007-04-01
I am a theatrical costume desginer and visual artist and this book is great reference material. There are terrific close-up photos of 1930's wallpaper! It's kind of like a companion piece to the All-American Ads books that Taschen publishes (now, those are a slice of heaven for the eyes and imagination!). As I wrote in the title, I wish there was a book like this for every decade.

Book Description
Design is one of the most fascinating cultural phenomena of the 20th century. This publication outlines the pioneer years of modern design history, tracing the development of the classic avantgarde design from 1880 to 1930 and showing 200 originals which have passed through the hands of Düsseldorf-based art dealer and collector Torsten Bröhan.
Customer Reviews:
more for looking at than reading.......2003-05-11
This is another one of those fairly good design books that relies far more on the images than on analysis and description. While the objects should certainly be able to speak for themselves, and they do, their age and what they meant at the time of their invention need far more explanation than is available here. Indeed, many pages have only a paragarph or less of text, a mere supplement to beautiful photos.
That being said, I learned a lot about the early history of industrial design from this book, from its origins as a reaction to the drab and near-featurelessness of early efforts to mass manufacture everyday objects to the abstract philosophy of the constructionists and the heavy duty functionalism of the Bauhaus. The longest treatment is rightfully reserved for Bauhaus and its immediate predecessors in the Werkbund, all Germans who were attempting to systematically merge artistic expression with the demands of industrial production, thereby creating a new movement. These developments are covered to a near-acceptable degree, but the language is confusing and often abstruce or cryptic and hence hard to understand. THe text also assumes a lot of knowledge and hence is not introductory, though at least it does not get lost in academic jargon.
I got the lightest introduction to the early history of industrial design in this book, but obviously I wanted more. I guess I will have to keep reading. Also, the Art Deco movement, which is a French/American development from the same period and largely a reaction to the utilitarianism and minimalism of the Germanic schools, is mentioned in a single paragraph and hence left completely unexplored.
One thing that really struck me was the direct line of continuity with much contemporary design. There must be subtle differences that I hope to discover later, but it made a lot of what I admire now look derivative. That was interesting and extremely stimulating.
Recommended as a starting point and a visual feast. It can be read at leisure in one day.
Book Description
The author begins this challenging monograph by probing Modernism's surfaces and subjects, its public and private meanings, in order to establish Johns's importance as the modern allegorical artist in the years after Abstract Expressionism. Yet, Figuring Jasper Johns is not an essay that presumes to offer an instant interpretation. Rather, Fred Orton self-consciously constructs a "Jasper Johns" whose work is introduced and explained in three chapters, each of which addresses a specific picture or sculpture like Flag, Painted Bronze (Savarin) and Untitled 1992. These in-depth studies situate individual works in their social context as well as in Johns's oeuvre.Fred Orton's purpose is to get to terms with – and find terms for – a difficult and elusive body of work by one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
Customer Reviews:
An effort too far in repetitious jargon.......2004-09-23
I found this book to be pretentiously over complexified. The relationship between object and surface has been aptly documented by many other art historians of the late 20thC.
I think that Fred has in this case over analysed too few works by the great artist, flag to me and many of the people I have discussed it with is far too complex a work for a man like Orton to even vaguely comment on critically. He appears to my other academic associates and I to be slightly out of his depth at this level, and in future would do well to perhaps abandon the bottle of Gin which he is widely known to keep under his desk, and to consequently write something worthwhile and not liquer-induced.
Mr Orton, I am not your fan.

a B&W fantasy & SF art collection.......2004-12-19
This 9"x11", 144 page hardcover was published by Underwood-Miller in 1993. The only colour art is on the dustjacket. The book contains over 140 of Fabian's science fiction & fantasy illustrations (all in B&W, even those that originally appeared in colour). Fabian has a very interesting style which works very well in black & white. Especially his use of tones. This collection is not recommended for those offended by scantily-clad women (there are a few scattered throughout the book).
