5 out of 5 stars Great for USMLE........2007-09-27

Consistently good book, easy to read, useful information in logical order. Pretty much all you have to know on Physio for Step 1.

5 out of 5 stars Physiology.......2007-09-14

This book is fabulous!!! It's one of the best physiology books I've read. I highly encourage purchasing it. Plus, it's a great FNP board review book with great questions at the end of the chapters!

5 out of 5 stars Best Physiology Review Book.......2007-08-11

Hands down the best resource for physiology. Respiratory and Acid-Base chapters were a bit weak, but overall, the book was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The gold standard for physiology on Step 1.......2007-07-27

Great to use during 1st and 2nd year in supplement to your medschool classes. My boards will be this summer, but this book is widely regarded as the gold standard for physiology preparation for the USMLE/COMLEX step 1..This book is also a condensed version of the bigger physiology boook by costanzo (same author) so if you dont understand anything in the BRS, you should refer to the bigger Costanzo book. I highly recommend at least the BRS for boards.

5 out of 5 stars Good review.......2007-07-12

Good review of physiology. Used it for my shelf exam and USMLE Step 1 and it covered most of the important things

Book Description

Now in full color and thoroughly updated, this Third Edition is an indispensable resource for massage therapy students and practicing massage therapists. This best-selling guide presents detailed information on over 200 diseases and conditions, emphasizing how massage influences the disease and healing processes and how therapists can maximize the benefits while minimizing the risks. The new art program features enhanced line drawings and full-color photographs of skin conditions ranging from mild to severe. A new appendix on medications explains how bodywork may influence the actions of various drugs. A back-of-book CD-ROM includes a self-testing tool, animations demonstrating pathophysiology concepts, and audio pronunciations for medical terminology.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-05-13

This book is well written, clear, and helpful; a truly informative book for massage therapists and anyone interested in the relationship between massage and specific pathologies. If you do bodywork, you will benefit from this book.

5 out of 5 stars good pathology book.......2007-04-10

I have just scanned through the book so far, but it looks like a very good pathology book for massage therapists. It describes the relationship massage therapy has with different human pathologies (extremely important). I am a student and using the book for school right now, but I will continue to use this book for future reference when I am acually practicing medical massage.

4 out of 5 stars Good source.......2007-02-13

I highly recommend the book. It contains detailed descriptions of all the commonly encountered diseases with vivid illustrations. The text lacks indications and contraindications for Eastern massage. It focuses only on circulatory massage.

3 out of 5 stars Not completely satisfied..........2007-01-25

Although quite brief, I liked the introduction to the body systems prior to describing the pathologies. The CD includes answers to the review questions at the end of the chapters, as well as the pathology animations (although I wish there were more of them), and the student Q&A for each chapter which are very helpeful.

However, the book should have discussed specific massage techniques/strokes for each pathology, not just whether or not it is indicated/contraindicated. Also, the audio glossary is quite annoying.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2006-06-25

When I first obtained this book, I read it cover to cover to learn what they didn't teach me in massage school. I now keep it in my office and use it as a reference for helping my clients understand their health conditions. It is easy to understand and gives many alternative healing methods for conditions not discussed in other books.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Every medical student should get this book........2007-09-14

All major topics covered by the usmle step 1 are concisely and intelligently covered in this book. The figures are amazing and integrate concepts so that you are sure to get the big picture and the most important points from each chapter. I use this as my main textbook for my medical biochemistry course. After I get the concepts covered in this book, filling in the details from lectures or my required textbook, (Textbook of Biochemistry With Clinical Correlations, is easy. I am sure that it will make studying for step 1 easier too since, with the aid of this book, I have been able to focus on the big picture from day 1. Also, if there is no preview here on amazon, I think the book's website has sample chapters. [...].

5 out of 5 stars Great reference!.......2007-09-13

This is an excellent resource for decoding those lectures delivered in a less than linear fashion. Well organized, excellent illustrations (cartoons) explain most concepts. Will save your hours of banging your head against the wall. It is saving my happy behind right now! Would not recommend for board review - too comprehensive - but do NOT go through biochem without this translator.

4 out of 5 stars read for boards.......2007-05-25

i read this for the boards(step1). It is readable with nice tables and diagrams that compliment it. you may not have time to read it, but if you have time, pls read this book for step 1. You should also read it during course work, then when the step 1 comes along it should be easier to read. i wish i read it during course work, but i read it for my step 1 and i made a 229/95

4 out of 5 stars The Newest and Best Edition.......2007-02-28

I have used all three of the editions of thisbook in my classes. By far the best review text, the addition of color illustrations adds greatly to the conciseness of the text. Color certainly helps me remember things a bit better, as I have a visual memory. A good study aid and USMLE prep book.

5 out of 5 stars must have.......2007-02-01

if you take biochem, gotta have this book. by the way, biochem blows.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ganong Review.......2007-10-17

This textbook is a very detailed writing with some explanation of basic physiology. It is a difficult read for a beginning text and needs to be backed up with supplemental information if you are learning from this text as a first line of education. I feel it is a very good review of physiology already understood with an in depth explanation into more detailed physiology.

3 out of 5 stars not needed for step 1.......2007-05-24

this book is too detailed for the step, a better books is brs physio.i read the whole section on neuro, it was very detailed but not once did i come across such info on my boards. Stick w/ brs physio unless u are trying to become a physiologist.I made a 229/95 on my boards reading brs physio, pocket robins, lipincott biochemistry, first aid, high yield anatomy mainly, then skimmed through high yield embryo and histo. Even though i read katzung for pharm it was a waste of time as first aid is more than adequaate.

5 out of 5 stars Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology.......2007-01-08

I have used Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology as my standard reference on human physiology since 1963. Its concise, clear prose and illustrations make it a joy to use. Yet it is so comprehensive that I always find what I'm looking for. The 22nd is the 4th or 5th edition I've purchased. - R.P., biologist

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review !!!.......2006-02-24

Describing this book will only make it look less perfect. This is for all you med. students out there: Excellent Review.

4 out of 5 stars Good for reference.......2006-01-05

From an Indian context, I don't think it necessary for a student to byheart Ganong in the first year. For an average student it can be disastrous to rely on Ganong for the university exams as time is very limited and it is not usually possible to study and recall all that is given in this exhaustive textbook. But for those who are really hardworking and keen to hit the jackpot in the very first attempt in the PG entrance tests, it is a must read. This is an excellent reference book. I think that the authors could have tried to simplify the language used for the sake of international audience and for a more pleasurable read.

Book Description

This compact, concise, easy-to-read monograph explains the key concepts and equations in respiratory physiology. The Seventh Edition updates and revises material to reflect current advances in respiratory science but does not stray from the proven formula students and faculty have enjoyed since 1974. New updates include physiology of pulmonary capillaries, hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, pulmonary edema, surface tension, elastic properties of the lung and chest wall, metabolic functions of the lung, and perinatal respiration. Ample illustrations and pedagogical features help clarify important equations and concepts. USMLE-style review questions at the end of each chapter help students review for class or boards.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Respiratory Physiology Book.......2007-04-27

This book is short and sweet, but don't be fooled: by the time you're done absorbing these lessons on respiratory physiology, you'll be well-armed to study and comprehend respiratory pathology.

As a medical student, I found, Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials, to be a clear, well-written book that will likely be useful for Step 1, and will definitely warrant a second reading during the clinical years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Respiratory Phys Provides The Basics.......2006-08-26

Respiratory Physiology provides the basics needed for a medical school respiratory physiology unit. By purchasing this book, a medical student is able to focus on the respiratory system in more detail than in some basic physiology texts.

2 out of 5 stars Not useful for medical school........2006-03-02

This book might be a good review text for people who are already familiar with the material, but it can't be used as a stand-alone text. It just doesn't have the necessary explanations. I'd recommend sticking with the respiratory chapters in your favorite comprehensive medical physiology textbook.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Guide for the lung.......2004-04-01

This book was well worth the money! It was concise and helped me understand topics that were very confusing in lecture (ventilation/perfusion relationship). Plus it is a fast easy read. In 4 days I was able to read the book, understand all the important concepts and ace the exam.

5 out of 5 stars -- perfect --.......2003-04-26

This book was short and concise. Extra gibberish was omitted - the remnants were a beautiful combination of text and explanations to often confusing topics. This book is perfect for any one studying respiration. This book is intended for med school students, but it is written in such a fashion that anyone could pick it up and read it. Reviewing? Cramming? Learning? This book will solve all your problems.

It was enjoyable and refreshing for me to review this text and it must be recommended both to medical students and practicing physicians.

(Dr.Werner,specialist for internal medicine)

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2004-12-08

To put it simply this book is the BEST cardiology book for any medical student wanting to really learn and understand the complex topics that can come up in the field. It breaks down all the topics in simple format and gives you the physiology before each chapter. Not to mention it has all the cardiac pharmacology that you will need to know now, for the boards and then some.

5 out of 5 stars "The Bible".......2004-05-27

My classmates generally do not like buying books in their first two years of coursework, since we are issued coursenotes. I knew, however, that this book was a must-buy when people always made reference to it as "the Bible".

This book is short and sweet, doing a great job covering basics like electrophysiology, the theory of the ECG, atheroscleorsis, coronary artery disease and MIs, congestive heart failure, and pharmacotherapy. One reviewer mentioned that this book will not let you just up and interpret ECGs, which is true. However, that takes quite a bit of practice and goes beyond this book's scope. What the book does do is provide a good explanation of some basics principles underlying the ECG's use that makes their interpretation a little more intuitive, rather than just looking at arbitrary squiggles.

This book is the real deal, and should be up on your shelf with other big names like Harrison's and Robbins.

Book Description

This updated Second Edition of a book in the popular High-Yield™ series intended primarily for USMLE review provides a succinct and well-illustrated review of gross anatomy in an easy-to-follow outline format. This book reviews topics most likely to appear on the USMLE Step 1 exam along with clinical correlation and heavy usage of CT and MRI scans. New to this edition are additional clinical correlations, expansion of the Head and Neck chapters, division of the Vertebral and Spinal Cord into two chapters, addition of summary tables, and replacement of figures no longer used on the USMLE exam. Designed to crystallize review material and key information needed for success on the Boards, this is also a great review book during an anatomy course as well as a refresher prior to the onset of a general surgery rotation.

4 out of 5 stars read for step 1 if time allows.......2007-05-25

this is a nice little book to just skim through if you have when studying for step 1.it has nice tables and easy to read format that makes stuff stick. skim through it if you have time, if you think you want have time or you find yourself running out of time, then read first aid as an alternative. Even if you decide to read this book, u shouldnt read it alone supplement it with first aid.i supplemented this book with first aid and i made 229/95 on my step 1.

3 out of 5 stars its OK.......2006-07-04

i read this book for prep for usmle 1...read the clinical scenarios they will prove more useful than memorizing wat nerve innervates wat....overall...useless book for boards...FA covered about 80-90% Of the anatomy questions...this book is overkill...and definetly would not be recommened for coursework since its not indepth enough...isntead use BRS Anatomy...that booked helped me kick butt in my anatomy course in med school....

For HISTOLOGY...i just took one day to go through all the powerpoints from first year histology...it helped a bit...

5 out of 5 stars All killer no filler.......2005-09-28

This is great for Step I. First Aid, which is overall an outstanding review, is weak on anatomy and neuro; this book fills in the gaps. Some like to say anatomy is a low yield subject on Step, and it is, but I got about 14-20 anatomy questions on mine. In the newest edition, the author does an even better job of putting some more typical clinical scenarios. You don't have to know every innervation and muscle, but you should know some of the bigger ones (like muscles of the quads) and commonly injured anatomical structures and their clinical presentation. This book accomplishes the above.

As far as using this for course work, it's probably not enough. But if you don't know something in High Yield prior to an exam, it would be good to fill in the gaps.

My only qualm with this text is the high price for the amount of material; I borrowed it from a friend for a couple of days and took notes.

4 out of 5 stars High-Yield Gross Anatomy.......2005-09-18

Excellent text. Clear and concise. This is an excellent review of must know anatomy for healthcare providers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quick read.......2004-06-08

This is an excellent source for high yield anatomy review. Its clinical scenarios, CT scans and other diagnostic images are priceless for Step 1 studying. HOWEVER, this cannot be used alone. An atlas must be used with it to completely cover anatomy. For it brevity and high yield info = 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Very High-Yield.......2006-10-27

This is a very high-yield little book written with Step 1 in mind. As the title implies, it focuses on pathology and pathophysiology. There is no wasted space, and don't be fooled by its small size, there is quite a lot of information in there. It is especially helpful as it contains useful information about refining your differential diagnosis (how to tell two similar diseases apart) based on sublties in the presentation. There is a lot of information you might not get in your pathology course (e.g. prerenal vs renal azotemia based on urine chemistry.) There is a section on zebras/syndromes (if you're like me, these are a devil to remember), a few pages of nice glossy images, and 75 Step 1 style questions with explanations in the back. Overally, a lot of information in a small package, including many unusual diseases not mentioned in many other review texts. A worthwhile read!

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2006-07-04

pretty decent book...i read this along with BRS...there are some mistakes in this book tho...when i first read through it...i felt like i was reading through a med students coursework notes because everything is in bullets...and hard to understand....if you read brs first...and use this afterwards...it makes more sense...its a decent book...with some good questions in the back...I Was too lazy to do all of them though...

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2006-05-15

This book and Secrets are great condensed multi-subject reviews. When you get tired of reading FirstAid, Step-up and the subject-based review books (e.g. BRS Phys), this book is a great supplement. If you can find time for this kind of studying, you'll enjoy this small, condensed book.

I'm also looking forward to using it on rotations starting this summer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Step 1 book.......2005-07-20

I wish I would have used this book prior to taking Step 1. This review book has many of the nit-picky details that I saw on my USMLE. I would recommend this book for those who have not taken Step 1 and I would also recommend the clinical boards and wards book for your clinical rotations. Good luck on your exam.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC LITTLE REVIEW BOOK!.......2004-01-31

This book is not only great for quick look ups on rounds, but it is great during the first 2 years of med school because the little highlights/buzzwords helps with exams.
Very easy to read, highlights just the important stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-06-07

I have to disagree with the other reviewers on this. If I could go back I would have gotten the BRS Physiology book, as opposed to this cases and problems. This book is only really effective perhaps as an add on to the BRS book. Each system has about 6-8 cases in it, and a lot of material is not covered. I was especially annoyed by the lack of reproductive system material (which consisted of 3 cases dealing with ambiguous sex syndromes). What about normal reproductive physiology? This book highlights the big points, and the explanations to the questions are very thorough, but if you are looking for an all in one comprehensive book, Id choose the BRS physio. This just seems like an attempt to sell more books by taking some info from the other book and putting it in vignette question/answer form

5 out of 5 stars Excellent review for USMLE Step 1.......2006-06-13

I had this book during first year phys and only did a few cases from it (not enough time). But once I started reviewing for Step 1, I went through the whole book - fantastic!

I started my review for each systems chapter in First Aid by doing the corresponding cases in Costanzo. This gave me an in-depth, conceptual review, which is what you need for Step 1. And, it's hard to have the discipline to work through the physiology; these cases help you really understand the material. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Taking the course and using it.......2006-04-10

Just wish I ahd more time to go over this book. It's an excellent preparation for course exams. It helped boost my grade. They do go a bit boring on the mathematical explanations and calculations.

5 out of 5 stars recommended.......2005-09-22

An excellent way to test your understanding of basic concepts in physiology. A great way to supplement your physiology/medical school courses.

5 out of 5 stars brings it all together!.......2004-04-08

This is a fantastic book for med school physiology, especially if you find lecture boring and need a book to bring the dry material into a clinical context. the book presents classic presentations and data, asks questions about the physiology behind the symptoms, and then explains the answers. the explanations are laid out simply using nicely worded paragraphs and incorporating all those nasty equations so that they make sense!
