Book Description
The dramatic transformation of relationships between humans and animals in the 20th century are investigated in this fascinating and accessible book. At the beginning of this century these relationships were dominated by human needs and interests, modernization was a project which was attached to the goal of progress and animals were merely resources to be used on the path towards human fulfilment. As the century comes to an end these relationships are increasingly being subjected to criticism. We are now urged to be more sensitive and compassionate to animal needs and interests.
This book focuses on social change and animals, it is concerned with how humans relate to animals and how this has changed and why. Moreover, it highlights, through chapters on companion animals, hunting and fishing, animal leisures such as birdwatching and wildlife parks, and the meat and livestock industries, how attitudes and practices towards animals vary widely according to social class, ethnicity, gender, region and nation.
Book Description
Rome's ancient monuments and spectacular galleries - for centuries a major draw on the international tourism map - are looking more magnificent than ever after the restoration and beautification of recent years. This exhaustively updated handbook provides an honest and in-depth assessment of the most exuberant of European capitals. Time Out Rome details the city's best sights both ancient and modern, world-famous and obscure from spectacular galleries to the sybaritic new Turkish baths. Highlights include budget lodging options including nunneries, campsites, and youth hostels; the lowdown on ancient Rome's martial machine, plus where to take gladiator lessons; and extensive coverage of rural delights, from (more) ancient ruins to abandoned villages, lush gardens, mountain walks, and sandy beaches.

Great..Until we got to Rome.......2007-01-17
I was really excited to use these guidebooks. I had heard a lot of good stuff about them and they looked great when I was leafing through them. It seemed like we would have the "locals" guide to Rome. but boy was i wrong. After arriving in Rome, the books proved to be useless. Every restaurant we wanted to try seemed to be located on a street that didn't exist. I had three different maps I was using, and none of them had the streets on it. These books are great for history, but that's about it. Don't waste your time..
Always good, a pre-trip must and can use in the streets as well.......2006-02-18
A British publication that covers everything thoroughly and with a sense of British humour and irreverence the Time Out Guides are always good for whatever city they cover. Very good coverage of hotels and restaurants, sightseeing attractions, and the very best for after hours entertainment, whether it is dance clubbing (which the Brits love to do) or sit down music venues, English speaking movie theaters in Rome, what to do with children and some nearby day trip excursions.
Insightful, accurate, complete, easy to carry. Maps are very good, history overview good, attraction descriptions good.
Definitely a pre-trip research must, not big on photographs, excellent on getting the feel for the city.

Best City Guide.......2007-01-07
THis book is compact, well organized, and informative, without having too much info. The restaurants it recommends are FANTASTIC, and all of the information about opening and closing times was accurate. I wouldn't travel with any other book.

The only guide of its kind?.......2006-02-20
Italy has such a rich gastronomic history and there are so few restaurant guide books that focus on this (with the exception of Florence and Tuscany). Many guide books only focus on the well-known, more touristy, places which I would prefer to skip. Zagat on-line only lists a few places. I have had the opportunity to dine at a few of the places listed and the experiences have been consistent with the reviews. And, it's small enough to keep in your pocket for quick reference by Rome's geographical areas.
The best restaurant guide.......2005-02-14
The small size of this book makes it perfect to tuck into a purse or pocket. The restaurants are organized according to neighborhoods and are marked on detailed maps, making them easy to find. I'm just back from a week of wonderful meals in Rome thanks to this guide. No matter what neighborhood I was in when I felt hungry, I could read the descriptions in this book and decide on the perfect place to eat. Included is helpful information on cuisine, tipping, and a glossary of Italian menu terms.
Finally.......2002-11-22
After living in Rome for a year and a half, I still find myself lost in the restaurant and dining scene in Rome. Finally there is a guide to help people find new and interesting places to go to. Through the millions of restaurants available this guide helps shine a light to the kind of place one is searching for. Dana Klitzberg and Time outhas really brought a guide that is worth every penny and more. The reviews are personable, informative, fun to read, and cover a wide spectrum of options and areas in Rome. Thank you Timeout for finally sorting out the restaurant and bar scene in ROME!!

Great maps / accurate info.......2005-02-16
We used this as our only guide book on a recent trip to Rome (also used their Time Out Venice version for the Venice portion of our trip - also would recommend). These books are small and easy to carry, something that was important to us in a guide book.
The maps are very good in both books, especially for finding specific things in neighborhoods. (We also used the Streetwise Rome map, which was better at getting an over all idea of how things were laid out & included more street names - using both resources allowed us to always find our way around.) We found the restaurant reviews to be helpful and the background info interesting. The only thing that was somewhat unhelpful to us was the focus on artwork - for being a small guide, the writers really emphasize and spend a lot of time describiing artwork on display in various places. We were as intersted in historical sites / info as artwork, and this book was probably not the best resource for quickly & easily finding out info about historical sites. Information was often buried within paragraphs, so a little tough to find when we wanted to look up something quickly. This book combined with another that emphasized the historical significance of places would probably have been a better option for us. However, that said, I would still recommend this book if you are looking for something easy to carry around, with good info over all.
Wow!.......2004-04-20
We used this book on a recent trip to Rome. It is the only thing you need. Don't bother buying a map, this book has the best one I have seen. Unlike other tour books, every restaurant was still in business and the reviews were always right on.
I will buy time out for any city I go to. Worth every penny!
Informative and helpful........2000-04-12
I do recommend TimeOut's city guides. Having visited several major cities (i.e. San Francisco, New York, London and Paris) in the last two years I have always been satisfied with the hotels, visits and restaurants suggested in these books. When I had the chance of visiting Rome at the end of last year the scenario was the same. Although I DO know the city (I have been there three times before) I can assure that this book was VERY informative and helpful. Congratulations TIMEOUT, the information you provide is priceless for the usual traveller

This book helped us cover most of Rome in one week........1998-01-31
We had one week. I bought two books. One was the heavy reference (gotta know what you're lookin' at) book and the other the quick reference (sum it up fast) book, Time Out Rome. The details on getting around were very helpful. The to-the-point texts on sites, monuments, and art were just about right for my husband's attention span. I carried this book with me through the whole week, it saved us time and money on many occassions. Because of this book, I think we saw a lot more of Rome than the average couple on an unescourted trip.
The only negative comment I would make is on the hotels. We stayed in one recommend in the book. The book made it sound charming. It was seedy! Against all the books recommendations, I pulled out the brocheur that we got at the airport -- the one the book cautions against. We got into a much better hotel at the same price we were paying at the seedy one.
In spite of the hotel mess, I still give this book a high thumbs up. I'll buy other Time Out Guides as a result.

Book Description
Visit the places of America's past, the places where real people led their lives and made American history. Places in Time takes readers to twenty sites that have shaped our national story. Each stopping point is a birds-eye view of a moment in time: Hear the Great Sun call out to his people at Cahokia, ride with General Benedict Arnold at Saratoga, step out of a sedan chair at Independence Hall, and join the Fergusons as they move into "the city as new as tomorrow."

Lilttle known facts, very well presented - that made me surf the Internet for even more info.......2007-03-14

Time Tales.......2006-12-08
Looking for the perfect gift for a youngster that you will enjoy as much as the recipient does? Try one of Buckley & Leacock's fabulous renderings of events in American history. The four books they have written (Kids Make History, Journeys for Freedom, Places in Time and Journeys in Time) weave a richly embroidered and at the same time historically accurate tapestry of the story of our nation's founding and continuing development. The authors have fastidiously researched and presented narratives that explain why we are proud to be Americans, with detailed maps and illustrations that are informative and entertaining accompaniments. These are books to be read again and again, cherished and kept forever.
Interesting Points in History.......2004-01-26
AWESOME, COOL, EXCITING
This book was a great experience for me. It taught me how life changes . It had information about wars, if you like wars. It's amazing how life changes like when a water-powered turbine powered a belt which produced electricity used to make quilts and cloth.
There is a little square on the page that tells you the year and place in the U.S. that the event took place. It has numbers to tell you what is what in the illustrations.
I loved the part about Ellis Island! Back then there were big mansions. Now a days there are not as many mansions. Read this book to learn about events in history you have never thought about before.
fun, gorgeous, fascinating.......2002-07-22
What a wonderful book! You can help your middle schooler envision locales of historic interest with these twenty two-page spreads. Pictures use up most of the space and depict people, including children, in typical doings; some cross-sections are employed. The text of several paragraphs describes the place physically, culturally and historically, and sometimes stories are personalized through the experience of a child. Numbered entries point out events or items of interest. Very nicely done and a terrific aid for visual learners.
Presented in chronological order, the sites are: Cahokia, 1200 AD; a Pacific Northwest whaling village, 1490; a pueblo and mission, 1627; New Plymouth, 1627; Charlestown, 1739; a black settlement/fort, 1759; Boonesborough, Kentucky, 1776; battle of Saratoga, 1777; Philadelphia, 1787; a Taos hacienda, 1823; Fort Laramie, 1849; a New England mill town, 1850; a plantation, 1855; Gettysburg, 1863; Abilene, 1871; a wheat farm, 1888; a Chicago mansion, 1893; Ellis Island, 1901; a New York tenement, 1916; a post-WWII housing project, 1953. An index is included.
Very nicely done. Highly recommended.
Personalized History.......2001-07-09
It does not simply show war battle sites. Historic places like a New England factory town, 1770's Philadelphia, and a slave plantation are also shown. Do not think of this as a map book. Cutaway drawings/paintings with labels show the reader a typical plantation, factory town, a 1950's planned suburb and battle scenes. It is a way of making history accessible and put a personal face on it. It is different in a very good way.
