Book Description

Amphibians and Reptiles in Colorado, Revised Edition, is an up-to-date, definitive summary of the distribution, conservation status, habitat, behavior, life history, ecology, and taxonomy of all salamanders, frogs, turtles, lizards, and snakes known to inhabit Colorado. It includes a description of the Colorado landscape, color photographs of each species, detailed range maps, identification keys, and tips on how to find, study, and photograph amphibians and reptiles. In addition, the author addresses the impact of human behavior on the region's herpetofauna, as well as the impact of Colorado's amphibians and reptiles upon humans.

Covering the western part of the central Great Plains, the southern Rocky Mountains, and the canyons, mesas, and plains of the upper Colorado River basin, Amphibians and Reptiles in Colorado will be a useful resource for adjacent states such as Wyoming and eastern Utah. With more than 200 color photographs to aid the reader in identification, this book is both an ideal reference work for those interested in the herpetofauna of the region and an invaluable field guide for hikers, amateur naturalists, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2007-10-17

Very informative book, covering an extensive range of animals. Descriptions have plenty of detail. Not just visual ID book, but a reference book on what makes them tick.

5 out of 5 stars The standard by which all others should be judged .......2005-03-08

This book is the yardstick that all other field guides should be measured against. Detailed and concise, Hammerson gives an excellent account of Colorado herpetofauna. I have two copies, one for my car and one for home.

5 out of 5 stars A Natural History Treasure!.......2000-03-27

For those only mildly interested in snakes, lizards, frogs and other 'creeping things', this book will change your life's direction forever! The first edition of this book was a treat: a field guide to the herpetofauna of Colorado, complete with photos, descriptions and distribution maps. I was highly pleased with it, and looking forward to the release of the second edition (due out in 1998, I think). The wait was worth it! This new edition contains not only the photos, some breathtaking in their beauty and clarity, and distribution maps, etc, but also pretty much everything one would ever desire to know about herpetofauna in the Southwest. This book now contains chapters on biogeography, examining all the Colorado habitats, conservation status and legislation, human interactions, viewing methods, and each Colorado species has its own and very thorough entry. As a professional herpetologist, this book is invaluable to me wherever I happen to be, Colorado or no. As a complete amateur, this book would open up a mysterious world! It's too heavy for a field guide, that's why there's those terrible Audubon things (although Patterson is good), but terribly useful for when you get home again. Buy this book, now!

Rick Steves has never failed me and I thoroughly enjoy his views and what he feels is not to be missed. You can never go wrong with a Rick Steves book. I do, however, always companion his books with a Frommers guide book and then I feel like I get the complete story of a city or country.

5 out of 5 stars It really is the "Best of Eastern Europe".......2005-08-15

I recently went on a 3-week backpacking tour of Central and Eastern Europe, using Rick Steves' book as my primary guide. Although I did use a few country-specific books, I found that this one book had virtually all the information I needed. After reading through this book, I planned my itinerary based heavily on Steves' recommendations--Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Krakow, Eger, Budapest, Ljubljana, Bled, and Vienna.
I've found that many travel guides cover the same places, but Steves suggested visits to places I would not have been able to find otherwise, such as the Roman Ruins in Obouda (near Budapest).
The book is well organized--each country's section begins with basic information about that country, such as language, currency, entrance requirements, etc. Within the country section, Steves has selected the best places to visit and provides detailed information about each. He tells you how to use the public transportation systems, what to do when you arrive at the airport, trainstation, bus station, etc.
I was very pleased with this book, and ran into several other travelers using the same guide. If you are interested in seeing Eastern Europe as more of a local than a tourist, this is the perfect guide. It's also updated every year, so almost all of the information was correct.

4 out of 5 stars Practical and Light.......2004-10-26

I bought the book for a recent trip which included stops in Paris and Amsterdam. Also included in the book are sections for London, Venice, Florence, Rome, and Madrid. If you're used to Rick's style and sense of humor from his TV show or his other guides, this book will fit you like a glove. The Paris section includes a city walk, the Louvre, Orsay, and Versailles, while Amsterdam's section includes a city walk, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House. Paris' city walk takes you from Notre Dame meandering through the Latin Quarter to Pont Neuf while Amsterdam's takes you from the railway station to the Rijksmuseum.

Let me start by pointing out that almost any city guide you buy will include some sort of walking tour. In my opinion, walking is the best way to see a city and to appreciate its size and layers. The walking tours for Paris and Amsterdam were well organized and informative, but I would have expected more than one to be included for each city, especially Paris with all its diverse "villages".

His hints for the museums were informative, but I found that they seemed to be focused on getting you in and out in the least amount of time. He provides two-hour tours for both the Louvre and Orsay in Paris. I thought they were good starting points (maybe read them before you go for the basics, which entrance to use, etc.) but I would suggest at least another couple of hours of exploring on your own in addition to what he describes for each. Don't forget the cafes inside when you need a break. I found Orsay's audioguide for 5 euros particularly useful. I found the book to be an excellent resource for Versailles allowing you to shimmy past the tour groups. The information in the book for each room was usually more than what we heard the live guides tell the tour groups. The map and guide of Versailles' gardens was also very useful. ONE VERY IMPORTANT NOTE THAT RICK FAILS TO MENTION is that beginning in 2003, Versailles began an all-encompassing, 17-year renovation plan. The beautiful Hall of Mirrors is currently being renovated in sections so you'll always likely be able to see some of it, but not the whole thing for the next many months. Versailles is worth seeing regardless, just don't be disappointed when you get there.

In Amsterdam, Rick's descriptions for Rijks and Van Gogh are great. The audioguides for each were worthwhile as well though certainly not necessary if you're armed with the book. This book is totally unnecessary for the Anne Frank House. Everything you need to know there, you watch on the slick plasma TVs or you read on the display cases and in your free guide. One exhibit there that Rick fails to mention is a temporary exhibit at the end called "Out of Line" which runs at least until May 1st, 2005. It's an interactive, voting-type thing where scenarios are shown on two monitors and you then decide whether freedom of speech or the right to be protected against discrimination should be held more important. It's a fitting end to a visit to Anne Frank House with topics as varied as Eminem's rap lyrics, soccer chants, and religious edicts covered. The room's votes are tabulated after each scenario and you can walk in and out as you please.

A lot of this book can be found in other Rick Steves guidebooks, but if you're going to visit more than one of the cities covered and you don't need all the fluff found in the more comprehensive books, this is probably the way to go.

I spent two wks in Europe and would have been helpless/lost without this book. I had previously traveled throughout Europe with a tour company, but with the assistance of Rick Steve's guidance and personal recommendations, I enjoyed this trip the most. He gives a unique balance of history, information and individual opinion for a range of interests/financial cost. I went to many of his recommended restaurants/hotels and found his ratings very accurate. The resturant he rec's in Salzburg, Austria for duck makes the best duck I've ever had. I highly recommend to book to any traveler (I've had much lesser experiences with other travel book series).

The book saved my sanity with its directions . Generally good information. Prices were higher in some places as can be anticipated. Great guide to Roman Forum - or else i'd have no idea what i'd be looking at. I really liked the information on transportation connections. Some descriptions of locations didn't work but they were generally good. He should mention that you have to pay cover charges at restaurants at places in Spain and Italy for (as the waitpeople tell me) the bread and the table cloth. The more sophisticated French don't do this. Good on ya Rick Steves.

                    3 out of 5 stars A good overview.......2005-01-30

This book is a good overview on many destinations in Europe. However, it is probably a good idea to do more research on the places you plan to visit as this book never has the chance to get too in depth on any single place. It also gives you Rick Steve's singular personal opinion on subjects that may be a question of personal preference. For example,in the chapter on London, the Author clearly likes charming bed and breakfast type establishments and very small hotels and never even addresses any other types of hotels. Not a word about a hyatt, hilton or marriott. Perhaps there is not enough room to cover these subjects in such detail for every city. His detail on the sites of each city are very good with great tips on getting around each city.

The books in this series manage to walk the delicate balance of being fun and humorous while still imparting a lot of knowledge to the reader. My three sons (8,7, and 5) couldn't put them down and neither could my husband and me. We homeschool and have encountered a lot of the topics in our history studies and were impressed by how much the books cover.

We also liked how gross/disturbing concepts were softened by the amusing illustrations of david Antram. Very impressive.

We plan to own them all.

                            Book Description

The 1950s and '60s were the halcyon days of the American Dream. Life was easier, safer and altogether more innocent. Nowhere was this more apparent than the freeway, that symbol of the growth of American prosperity. American Retro is a wonderfully evocative collection of gift books celebrating the motels, diners, cars and Main Streets that were the landmarks of these great highways. Together with a selection of witty and nostalgic quotes, these charming books will be a perfect gift for those who remember.

This is a wonderful book that more or less describes a series of themed restaurants in the US. It goes beyond the franchised mega restaraunt chains and focuses on the more unique one of a kind places. A unique and wonderful pictoral book.
