I bought this book after my trip to Jordan. I usually buy my Lonely Books before I make the trip. Even after the trip, the book was very useful. I was able to better understand and appreciate the sights I saw while in Jordan. I have had very good impressions with all the Londly Planet books I have used.

a heads up about Cuba.......2006-03-07

I took a cheaper mountain bike that was fixed up for riding on the road to cuba. No doubt that riding around havana is a pleasant way to go. However on the longer one day rides(Veradero to Cienfuego) I found the bike allot less appropriate to the airconditioned buses zooming by. There were moments riding eastward towards Trinidad that justified this style of traveling, however whichever direction I went there seemed to be a headwind. The local kids know this and rode my back wheel whenever they could. I saw one other cyclist on the road with a high end bike. No doubt they intended to take their bike back home. I elected to give it away before returning, I hope you do the same.

This book gives the basics on where to stay, where to eat and how to get from point A to point B. The background information on the ancient sites is sparse. For better archeological info (out of a guide book) I'd recommend Mathew Teller's "Jordan-The Rough Guide" over this book. It provides more info on Petra and other ancient sites in Jordan, and focuses all its energies on Jordan alone.

Damien Simonis is one of the authors of this LP edition, and I love his other books, so I don't think the reason this book isn't a good choice has to do with the authors... it is simply because it is a small book dedicating itself to two countries... In fact, the Jordan chapter in this book is simply excerpts from the more thorough LP guide, "Jordan". So if you're going to Jordan and Syria, I'd recommend getting LP Jordan and LP Syria separately... Remember, the whole point of a guide book is simply to help you get the most out of your trip and time... it doesn't mean you can't wander off and find things on your own once your there!! Only a fool would think that way!

Yeah, the guide is full of practical information -- the book is after all for people who are afraid of getting lost or discovering anything for themselves -- but when it comes to informing you accurately and knowledgably on archeology, culture and history, it is a real let down. For the cheapest burger in town, buy this guide; but if you want something intelligent and informed, buy a better guidebook.

Some of the world's earliest civilizations thrived in what are now Jordan and Syria, and it is therefore not surprising that hundreds of historical and archaeological sites are to be found in the region. This book offers in-depth coverage of the main sites along with clearly written practical information on everything else travelers need to know about to help them make the most of their visit: historical, cultural, and political notes, a helpful language section, a detailed glossary, maps, photos, and accommodation and restaurant listings. Be sure to read the book before you go, and bring it along with you.

An ideal complement to the above guidebook is Sonia Uvezian's fascinating and highly informative "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen: A Culinary Journey through Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan." This landmark volume should be required reading for anyone who plans to travel to the region or who is simply interested in its history, cooking, and culture.

In general the Lonely Planet series is by far the best travel quide set that I have ever used. You can discover out of the way places or you can go to the places where everyone goes. For those people who truly want to have an adventure and experience the culture of the people and the country, Lonely Planet is the way to go!

Good Guide Book...but..........2003-03-03

Much more informative than LP's "Jordan & Syria" edition. There are a couple of beautiful pictures of Wadi Rum in here, and some decent background info on archeological sites around Jordan. Border crossing politics are made clear, and how to get around is succint. There is quite a bit of information packed into this book, covering everything from little-known facts about Bedouin life to opening/closing times at Karak Castle. The maps in this book are more useful than some other guides I've seen and I would have given this book 5 stars, but I know of another book superior to this one.... It's Matthew Teller's "Jordan-The Rough Guide"....

The English take control of the North American continent.......2002-10-08

"The French and Indian War: 1660-1763" obviously covers much more than the few years during which the English and French fought over the division of the North American continent. In this four volume in "The Drama of American History" series authors Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier trace how England's other rivals for control of America were eliminated over this period until the only source of conflict left would be between the British and their own colonials. The authors point out, and I concur, that this period between the establishment of the first colonies (i.e., Plymouth and Jamestown) and the fight for independence, is the most neglected period of American history. This series offers a fairly unique approach to American history by focusing on "core content" rather than a blizzard of names and dates. From this book students will get a good sense of not only what happened but why as England eliminated its competition.

Consequently, this volume offers up six chapters focusing on key issues. The first three chapters of the volume are devoted to the first central theme regarding the struggle between the European powers for control of the North American continent: (1) The European Colonies in the Late Seventeenth Century establishes which parts of North American were controlled (or at least claimed) by European powers and which of these early colonies were actually starting to prosper in the New World; (2) The Dutch and the English in America focuses on how the English eliminated the Dutch and Swedes from the equation; and (3) The Spanish Retreat traces how geographical considerations and contentment with their enormous holdings in elsewhere in the New World stopped the Spanish from expanding their holdings in North America beyond Florida. The Colliers underscore the importance of this by postulating a Latin America that might have begun at the southern border of Virginia.

The chapters in the second half of the volume look a the second central theme, the maturing of the colonies as they turned from outposts of Europe into lands with their own society and culture: (4) Pennsylvania on the Delaware River looks at the colony founded by William Penn as an exemplar colony that gives young readers an idea of how colonies began to grow and prosper; (5) The French and the English in North America studies how by the start of the 18th century only two European nations were contesting for control of North America east of the Mississippi River. But while the English were interested in settling the continent (and the colonies continued to grow and prosper), the French saw it more as a source of products such as timber and fur; and (6) The French and Indian War begins with George Washington's pivotal role in starting this war between European powers in America. Although he participated in two defeats at Fort Necessity and Fort Duquesne, Washington became a military hero to the Colonials. The Colliers detail the course of the war, including the key battle on the Plains of Abraham, and conclude the volume with the short-term effects of the war regarding the new division of the continent between the British and French.

Ultimately the French and Indian War is the key stepping stone to the American Revolution because it was the efforts of the British Parliament to tax the colonials to help pay for both that war and future military efforts in the New World that outraged the sensibilities of Americans. That outraged eventually translated into first the movement and then the war for American independence. As with the other volumes in this excellent series, "The French and Indian War: 1660-1763" keeps the focus on the key chain of events that define the history of this period. The result is that young readers (as well as their teachers) will have a clear sense of the logic, if not the inevitability, of what happened during this time period. The book is illustrated with historical etchings and paintings, as well as contemporary color photographs of historical rennactors and historic buildings. These illustrations help to underscore one of the main threads of this volume, which is the way in which the colonies were becoming more prosperous, which affected their self-image as being the equal of those living in England. As we shall see in the next volume, "The American Revolution: 1763-1783," this belief will run rather contrary to how the English viewed the colonists.

Not what I expected, but still very useful.......2007-01-03

The book introduces the basic types of tessellations and presents many examples. Note that the book title say "32 plates _to_ color" and not "32 color plates". The "look inside" feature shows already colored tessellations, but they are not in the book. It's not a problem, but don't expect to get color plates. This book is more geometric in its approach than "Principles of Pattern Design" by Proctor (isbn 0-486-26349-5) and may complement it nicely.
