Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-05-10
This is an awsome book with plenty of great pictures in it. Has lots of fish details that i didn't think would be in it. I only wish it had more fish in it.
AWESOME BOOK.......2007-05-08
It's a great book with great pictures. Good for quick visual reference on different types of fish and a few details about behavior, diet and aquarium. I recommend it!
Packed with in-depth detail perfect for setting up an aquarium........2007-03-05
The same format graces Greg Jennings' 500 FRESHWATER AQUARIUM FISH: A VISUAL REFERENCE TO THE MOST POPULAR SPECIES. Over 500 species and varieties are covered with basic facts on size, behavior, diet, aquarium and breeding conditions accompanying a full-color, full-page facing photo. Any home or library collection strong in aquarium references - and many a fish store - will find this packed with in-depth detail perfect for setting up an aquarium.
Great text.......2006-08-20
This is a great reference text for some common species as well as the unknown ones; especially if you want a quick reference of a variety of species to create a "species" or "community" tank this book will be helpful in decision making. The book gives good details regarding the expected size of the fish, general behavior and environment just to name a few. The photos contained within the text are well detailed. I would recommend this book to beginners and intermediate aquarists.

Book Description
Research on sensory processing or the way animals see, hear, smell, taste, feel and electrically and magnetically sense their environment has advanced a great deal over the last fifteen years. This book discusses the most important themes that have emerged from recent research and provides a summary of likely future directions. The book starts with two sections on the detection of sensory signals over long and short ranges by aquatic animals, covering the topics of navigation, communication, and finding food and other localized sources. The next section, the co-evolution of signal and sense, deals with how animals decide whether the source is prey, predator or mate by utilizing receptors that have evolved to take full advantage of the acoustical properties of the signal. Organisms living in the deep-sea environment have also received a lot of recent attention, so the next section deals with visual adaptations to limited light environments where sunlight is replaced by bioluminescence and the visual system has undergone changes to optimize light capture and sensitivity. The last section on central co-ordination of sensory systems covers how signals are processed and filtered for use by the animal. This book will be essential reading for all researchers and graduate students interested in sensory systems.

Customer Reviews:
Fish Disease Book.......2007-09-29
While this book was very detailed in the descriptions of the diseases, most of the diagnoses seemed to depend on autopsy of the victim after death. It also seemed that a microscope would be required to get full use from the book. I am not sorry that I bought the book, but I would not recommend it to most people looking for a reference on curing sick tropical fish.
great book for fish parasite identification.......2007-05-26
I have been looking for a book like this one for a long time. Many books
that I have seen previously were long on words, but short on actual photos
of fish diseases. This is considered to be a classic book on aquarium fish diseases by many people who need to identify parasites through the microscope. I was able to save many of my fish in my pond by the use of
this book, and the proper medications. Plenty of flow-charts and color photos to help step you through the process of disease identification.
Excellent guide to help diagnose your fish's illness.......2007-05-13
I currently have six Betta Splendens Siamese fighting fish.
Sadly, I've had two fish die last year and wanted as much
help as possible to deal with health issues. This book helps
with the often difficult diagnosis of illness. Without an
accurate diagnosis it's hard to choose a medication and/or
other treatment. I found the section on using a microscope
and slides very intriguing, even if it is a bit advanced
for most fish hobbyists.
A MUST have for the Tropical Fish enthusiast.......2006-02-04
I have several fish books and they offer very little as far as diagnosing the problem goes. This is an excellent book for getting right to the problem without having to second guess and improperly treat your aquarium fish. I love the charts and the pictures. It really simplifies things. It will be my number one book when it comes to keeping my fish healthy and happy. I give it 5 stars plus!
Best fish disease book.......2004-05-25
This is the most helpful book on fish diseases I have ever owned. It has helped me understand what ogranisms have infected my fish and helped me to find treatments for them. The various charts help narrow down all the possiblities of disease that a fish may have. I recomend this book to any fish hobbist that is interested in finding cures for the diseases that have effected their fish, beginners and advanced. However a basic understanding of biology and microbiology might be helpful while reading this book.

Book Description
In order for biodiversity to be conserved, it is important to know how and where diverse populations of plants and animals exist, to understand the effects of human impacts on them, and to find the means by which these impacts can be lessened and even reversed. While tropical systems are known to be among the most diverse and most threatened globally, tropical freshwater systems have been neglected, and the tremendous variety of fish, amphibians, invertebrates and plants that live in them are poorly known yet seriously threatened. This comprehensive book brings together a wealth of information on the fish of tropical African systems, and discusses how these systems evolved, what holds them together, and what is tearing them apart.

Customer Reviews:
Great information, great sedative.......2007-05-06
This book is filled with lots of wonderful information for starting your first saltwater aquarium. However, it reads like a dictionary. It's simply need-to-know information without much rhythm. I found myself actually nodding off while trying to read this book at 5 p.m. More pictures would probably have helped keep my interest, but I can't say for sure. Otherwise, Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies had useful information that I was able to apply to my aquarium hobby.
Save Your Money.......2007-04-08
This book makes saltwater aquariums seem easier than they actually are. For one, I don't even think the book mentions the use of reverse osmosis or deionized water, which is strongly recommended by all marine aquarists. The author also doesn't mention the importance of live rock. In fact, he goes as far to advise against using live rock for fish-only tanks! Sure, you might be able to get away with not using live rock, but it won't be worth it in the long run. Also, I don't agree with the list of recommended filter combinations. One more thing, the book lists an air stone as essential equipment, but the only thing an air stone will do is aid evaporation and cause salt creep! If you have enough movement of water at the surface, you should get sufficient gas exchange. There is, however, one thing the book does get right: its strong recommendation of using a protein skimmer.
This book is easy to understand, but you won't be getting the best information.
Good Starter Book, But Incomplete.......2007-03-09
This new edition of Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies has been brought much more up-to-date with current marine aquarium techniques and is one of the most recently published books I could find on the subject. That said, it's still not a great book on the subject. It becomes overly repetitive in some areas and lacking in others and is often poorly organized. For instance, even basic species information is divided between multiple chapters with each one incomplete on its own and constantly referencing you back-and-forth. Too much time is spent on filtration techniques which the book itself deems are generally inadequate while leaving the reader confused between other techniques [and glances over or completely neglects advanced techniques used for reef aquariums]. The book is clearly aimed at the beginner, but fails to provide adequate direction for moving forward from there.
Good Book.......2007-03-08
This is a great book for those who don't know how to keep a saltwater aqarium.
saltwater aquariums for dummies [its true value] .......2006-11-10
this book is actually quite helpful in getting you familiar with
all the essential jargon encountered in this hobby. it is done in
a non intimidating manner. as for those that criticize the book
for recommending undergravel filters, it doesn't, it states it can be
done, but its old technology. buy this book, WITH!,a comprehensive
salt water aquarium book. after reading both you are ready to play.
more in depth books gave too much info too fast. i took off star
because photos are in black and white.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting.......2007-07-29
This book has a lot of scientific data and an analytical feel to it. The writter put a lot of thought into this book and provided a lot of information not found in most aquarium books. She focuses on low tech tanks which is nice for those of us that don't have a lot of money to invest in equipment but want the look of a planted tank. I recommend this book to anyone that has a low tech tank or is interested in a different perspective on planted tanks.
Practical, yet scientific........2007-03-13
This book can be useful to the layman and has the depth for the pro.
The author clearly knows her subject and has the technical expertise. The biology and chemistry is over my head (it has been a loooong time since taking those classes), but it is actually readable. Some items simply have to be taken on faith if you haven't got the background to fully comprehend everything. In other words, one does not have to understand 'redox equations' to get the content.
I haven't tried her methods yet, but I am intrigued. It goes against most of my library, but she makes a lot of sense.
Other options.......2007-02-21
First of all, I gave "Ecology ..." 4 stars rather 5 as my feeling is that a "Practical Manual" might offer some options in terms of an author's preference. And, being a "Manual," it may also present "Trouble shooting" type of pointers, or "How to find your way back if a different path was selected." I believe the above are areas that could have been addressed in better fashion. However, that said, "Ecology..." is really an excellent source. D. Walstad tackles subjects with both the scientific base as well as personal experience. At times, the scientific base is (for may tastes and background) a little too involved. But, sprinkled throughout, we have questions with answers. I really liked that. I also liked her chapter that basically dealt with "This has worked for me...." The author dispels some myths in terms of natural sunlight and carbon supplementation that generally runs against current trends. What I thought might be improved:
1) A chapter devoted to, "How to rectify a situation without a total breakdown of the aquarium."
2) Options to "Plotting soil"(gardening soil)in the substrate. For those of us who don't feel confident in running off to Wal-Mart for our substrate.
3. More information on filtration; I'm a little skeptical in terms of the plants "Can do it all."
But, compared to the other book also purchased, "Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants," I very much like the author stating in clear terms "This has worked for me." With "Encyclopedia," you need dig to find this information.
GOOD BOOK IF .......2007-02-14
A GOOD BOOK IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE LINGO - I DID NOT. THE BOOK WAS WAY TO TECHNICAL FOR MY POOR BRAIN. I TRIED TO READ IT BUT JUST COULD NOT. I ORDERED THE BOOK BY MISTAKE (AGAIN MY POOR BRAIN). SENT IT BACK AND WAS GIVEN A RAPID REFUND IN ACCORDANCE WITH AMAZON POLICY. I HAVE NO QUARLS ABOUT PAYING THE SHIPPING AND APPRECIATE THE ABILITY TO RETURN AM ITEM WHEN THE ONLY REASON I RECEIVED IT WAS THROUGH MY ERROR. I GIVE THE BOOK AND AMAZON 5 STARS AND MY SELF 1. IF YOU ARE REAL SMART BUY THE BOOK BUT IF YOU ARE JUST "PURTY" SMART LOOK ELSEWHERE.
THANK YOU AMAZON!!!!
RED CRANE
JUST A "PURTY" SMART COUNTRY BOY
This author really knows her stuff!.......2005-11-15
I highly recommend this book because it says it how it is!
Read this book and suddenly nearly all of your queries about freshwater aquarium ecology will be answered! From how aquatic plants purify water to caring for aquatic plants without using elaborate expensive equipment. Although, I am one to think that if people want their plants to flourish and have stable pH and alkalinity levels in their aquarium, they will need to invest in carbon dioxide fertilising with a solenoid valve to allow CO2 to flow when only the lights are on, providing all other growth factors are adequate (like lighting and nutrients).
Book Description
When the first edition of Inland Fishes of California was published in 1976, it was a benchmark reference. Since that time, our knowledge of California's freshwater fishes has dramatically increased. This completely revised edition incorporates a vast amount of new information and creates a fresh synthesis of the historical data. Written by the leading expert on California's freshwater fishes and illustrated with beautiful line drawings, this compendium is the single best source for understanding and identifying the state's freshwater fishes. It is an essential resource for anyone who needs to have accurate and detailed information on California's fishes at their fingertips.
Since the 1870s, the state's native fishes have been joined by thirty-four alien species, which now dominate many bodies of water. This book treats both native and introduced species, first in a key for identification, and then in individual species accounts covering characteristics, taxonomy, names, distribution, and life history. Each account includes the author's personal assessment of how well the species is doing and problems associated with its management. Most of the native fishes are found only in California and show many wonderful adaptations for living in the state's diverse waters. Unfortunately, many are also in danger of extinction.
The message underlying the first edition of this book was that we knew astonishingly little about many of California's inland fishes. Although our knowledge is increasing, full accounts of some native fishes may not be complete before they become extinct. Preventing the loss of native fishes is the major goal of this book, and Moyle makes important suggestions for conservation strategies as well as presenting up-to-date information on ecology, life history, and distribution. With this knowledge, preserving our native fishes becomes possible even in the face of the state's growing economy and population.
Book Description
A stunning look at the amazing fish diversity of Alabama, home to almost one-third of all fishes found in the US.
An enormous, superbly illustrated book revealing the astounding diversity of Alabama's fishes through brilliant color plates by Joseph Tomelleri and incredibly detailed information from the authors. Boschung and Mayden are two leading scientists of biodiversity. Boschung , co-editor of the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Fishes, Whales, and Dolphins and Mayden, author of over 100 papers on fishes, and editor of the landmark publication Systematics, Historical Ecology, and North American Freshwater Fishes, have dedicated years to documenting the evolutionary histories, diversity, diets, growth rates, reproduction, sizes, distribution, and status of Alabama's fishes, and they present this wealth of information in a helpful, user-friendly format. The identification keys to the species are beautifully illustrated with extremely helpful drawings that provide fast, accurate identification, useful to experts and the general public alike. Whether an angler looking to determine the species of fish he just caught, a biology student interested in stream biodiversity, or a young naturalist exploring North America's hotspot for fish biodiversity, everyone with an interest in the diversity of our world will find Fishes of Alabama ideal. 709 color, 804 b/w illustrations.

Fishes of Alabama.......2007-03-12
This is the most beautiful text book I have ever seen! With this book I am learning to "key out" fish for identification. A whole new world is opening before my eyes!
Awesome.......2006-08-19
This is a very informative book. I would have preferred more pictures and less artists renditions, but one can't be too picky.
Brilliant Book.......2006-03-21
This book is a great reference for any ichthyologists or anyone who loves fishes and art. It contains a lot of information and citations for each species.
Amazing illusrations, packed with information.......2004-08-21
This is an excellent reference book. Joe Tomelleri is a remarkable artist with a talent I have never seen before. His illustrations are so close to looking at the fish in a stream. He is a master at capturing life. The information in this book is very complete and concise. A great buy for the money and just a beautiful book to look at even if you are not extremely interested in fish.
