5 out of 5 stars If you've got a puppy, you're gonna want this book........2004-08-15

Let me tell you, my little Sheltie was going all over the carpet and that is a big, big no no. I was at my wits end. I just loved her to death and it broke my heart, keeping her outside. Then a friend turned me onto this book and I went straight to page 50 and the "Let's Talk Housebreaking" Chapter. It worked. Now my baby staying inside with me where she belongs.

But don't get me wrong, this book is about so much more than housebreaking and puppy raising. There is good advice here for dogs and people of all ages. People and pups, they belong together and Ms. Gray has written a nice little book that helps them stay together.

The image of one of the grandest views in Yosemite, a double page (pp.12&13) spread of Tenaya Canyon seen from Olmstead Point, is printed BACKWARDS!!

Where were the editors and proofreaders when this travesty rolled off the press?? Why did the author not recognize this??

    Book Description

Part atlas, part travel guide for the business traveler and vacation planner, the Travel Atlas presents planet earth as a place to experience. A gazetteer lists not only political and physical statistics on each country, but also facts on its climate, cuisine, languages, medical service, and entry requirements.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview.......2007-08-23

This book is an excellent general atlas with beautiful maps and helpful descriptions of interesting areas for each country. It is mainly an atlas first and therefore can not go into full descriptions of every area of interest or else it would be much too large and expensive. If you need a more thorough travel guide I would suggest you purchase one for an individual country, which can go into much more detail. For what this is intended for though it its a real treat. Great book.

2 out of 5 stars Only average for either atlas or travel guide.......2007-03-30

I'm a huge fan of maps and an avid traveler, so I was eager to get my hands on this Atlas from the publishers of the Eyewitness Guides series.

Unfortunately, it's disappointingly mediocre. The maps are light on detail and rather plain, the travel information is superficial, and about half the book is index pages for the low-detail maps. So it turns out to be both a poor atlas, and a not very good travel guide.

It's not terrible either, but not worth the money. If you'd like to browse through country information from a traveler's perspective, try Lonely Planet the Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World . There are also many fine atlases out there, such as the classic from National Geographic National Geographic Atlas of the World, Eighth Edition.

    This one is not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good if it is what you're looking for.......2006-07-01

This book has a very specific purpose. It's a good book for browsing and doing some quick and interesting couch traveling to places with nice scenery and thats about it. I would not recommend it as a reference. So I'm not sure that "The Traveler's Atlas" is really a good title. But I guess I would have gone with it over the more honest "Some Interesting and Pretty Places a Few People Visited and Researched".

It nicely highlights and handful of beautiful areas of the world and gives a thorough 2-3 page description of the experience of visiting there and the history. However, the places seem to be chosen based on their scenery alone. So if you're looking for events or cultures, they don't come up too often. Some locations are streotypical "Places you must see" and some aren't as obvious. I like that it seems to be written by people who have actually been to each place and that the pictures are pretty but not over the top. Kind of like pictures an experienced amateur would take on a trip themselves.
This makes a good present to someone with aspirations of unique travel, someone who thinks they have already seen everything, or someone who appreciates wonders of the world.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, but missing a lot........2006-04-01

This is a nice coffee table book, but leaves out the vast majority of South America. I could not believe Rio de Janeiro and other major places where not listed. Could be a bit more extensive.

4 out of 5 stars This is much better than "1,000 places to see...".......2006-02-25

If you are building your "lifelist" this is the book for you. It is much better at giving the reader a sense of the destination than the "1,000 places to see..." book.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-02-12

This book is full of Typos! Someone should have gone through and checked the information in this book, even spots on the map are incorrect.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept, disappointing photos and descriptions.......2003-12-30

I am disappointed by this book. The paper quality does not do justice to the photos. Colors and defintion are washed out. Furthermore, while I only skimmed through the book I noticed several typos.

I was also surprised to see the Taj Mahal and Hong Kong and a lot of other very cool places ommitted, while Florida (!) was included.

1 out of 5 stars Lies, Lies and more lies...........2005-09-08

I bought this book because I need it for my His. class. From chap. # 1, I wanted to drop the class JUST BECAUSE THIS TBOOK.

Chapter 1: Referring to slaves and Native Americans "Within their own families and COMMUNITIES they made choices..."
              My questions are
How many Slaves had choices??? What community of slaves?? Welcome to the Black Slave Community. The book is a joke

Slaves were not human for their owners. They were an expensive item. If the owner wanted to sell a Black baby, they were able to do it because the baby was the owner's property. The parents of this baby didn't have the "CHOICE" to say THIS IS MY CHILD. HE/SHE DOESN'T BELONGS TO YOU, SO YOU CAN NOT SELL HER/HIM. I think that this book and the authors do not respect Native Americans, African Americans and the history.

Also, the trade of Europeans with Native Americans . The book reads, "that the Indian was 'making sport of us Europeans.'" We, the people from America (the whole continent), lost everything we had in our trades. We didn't know the value of our gold, and we traded it for glass beads. So, What sport are we talking here? How this author want us to believe that we, people from America, fooled the Europeans?

1 out of 5 stars History is always changing...apparently.......2002-03-07

If you're buying this book, chances are that it is the mandatory text for a class and you have no choice. It's one of the necessary evils of education. But...it gets worse. This book is not even a true history book. It is a social commentary losely laced with historic facts, as the authors see fit. So much opinion drowns the chapters that the validity of any fact is virtually negated.

The intent was good. The result is terrible. It was the authors' intent to write a broader history of America that encompasses the many cultures and historical events that led to the founding of our country, rather than merely presenting the white/European history that we're accustomed to. A good deal of historical background is given regarding African and native American tribes and cultures. That alone would have been wonderful, not to mention needed. But, the authors spend so much energy injecting their opinions into the text (rather than the opinions of the people at the time), that it is very difficult to sift through and learn the basic events that one must learn for a history class. Any civilized person knows that inexcuseable events took place in our nation's history (i.e. slavery, forcibly taking land fron Native Americans, etc, etc.). I don't know anyone today that would defend these actions, yet throughout the text, we basically beaten over the head with how evil the white Europeans/colonists were.

A real history book, in a free society, should present all the facts possible and allow the readers to come to the rational conclusion themselves. As an example, this book even picks sides on a war between Spain and England. Spain "unfortunately" failed at its attempt to invade and Catholicize England. I don't even know how they came up with this stuff, or how they have the courage to present it as unbiased. I'm embarrassed that we have allowed this sort of material to filter into our schools and be taught as truth.

If you have any way around it, do not buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Quick, inexpensive, honest.......2005-10-02

The quality of this paperback isn't perfect, but they never claimed it was. I got what I expected, quickly, and at a very reasonable price. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent AP Textbook! Got me a 5!.......2005-08-06

I purchased this textbook to self study for the AP US history exam and can say I was thoroughly satisfied. The text and prose is very well written, you never need to "hunt" for the main point. The information is incredibly good; besides highly detailed resources in the main text, each chapter features an in-depth essay on a certain subject, many of which appeared as multiple choice questions on the 2005 AP exam. Most of the text reads like a detailed story, and keeps one's interest quite well. A note of warning: the authors write this at the college level and students with limited vocabularies may have some difficulty comprehending the text.

Political cartoons and other visual media are very apt and many of the cartoons in the book were the same ones that appeared on my AP and SAT in multiple choice questions.

Some reviewers have complained of a liberal skew, I could certainly see how they would arrive at that conclusion. Chapter titles like "Triumph of the White Man's Democracy" and labeling Columbus as an "invader" seem a bit presumptuous. Additionally, the book tends to put a disproportionate emphasis on women/minorites, however, so does the AP examination. Divine seems not to be so much as liberal, but as challenging commonly held assumptions. For instance, he makes it very clear that FDR's New Deal plan did nothing to bring America out of the Great depression, it only made the period until WWII bearable for some. Divine is quick to criticize the failures of Wilson's 14 points and the economic crisis imposed by the Carter administration. Either way, Divine has facts to back up his statements, facts which can easily be incorporated into AP essays requiring an opinion.

Overall this is an excellent resource, and I highly recommend it, as it got me a 5 on the AP, and 780 on the SAT US History exam.

              1 out of 5 stars Biased.........2004-04-02

This book came from a total liberal slant. It tells history in a false way, and twists things to fit the author's point of view. Plus, it is almost anti-america. Everything in there has a negative tone to it, and describes the white males as basically destroying everyone else, and how america is so evil. please. America is the longest standing country out there, yet the authors seem to think our founders were all cracked. BTW I use this book for my high school AP US history class.

              5 out of 5 stars very good.......2004-02-27

This is a very nice textbook, and is meant for those who have already had a background in history. I use it for my AP class and really like it. The book reads very well - unlike a lot of history books it doesn't use complex grammar and spelling to sound sophisticated - and has a lot of detail as well as a liberal and well-founded opinion; in addition it has very good diagrams, illustrations, and a chronology for each chapter. It is a real book - there are no built in study guides, self review, or page-consuming explainations of simple concepts that most textbooks have. I reccomend this for all who wish to seriously study history, but not for those who want to skim a book for a quick review.

              5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2002-08-04

This makes an excellent undergraduate textbook in US history -- also good just for a general read.
